With a triumphant whoop, Hazzan tore through the clearing and took cover behind a tree. Her swarm of gaming flapstractions would be here momentarily, and following them would be her young player. So far, Lunear had met every single one of her challenges valiantly, but she was eager to see what he'd do against a carefully-laid trap.

The first of the flapstractions fluttered into the clearing, and settled at the center, forming into a large tree stump. It looked like it should have been there all along, and Hazzan grinned to herself. It had definitely been worth it to spring for a new game grub, with upgraded graphics capability. This game was her first real chance to push the limits of the new system, and she was thrilled with the results.

Hopefully, this monster would not be too much for Lunear to handle. He was still awfully inexperienced... She thought she could hear him approaching, anyway.

Clamping a hand over her mouth, Hazzan sank lower behind the tree trunk. Carefully, she peered around into the clearing. If Lunear saw her, it would ruin the suspension of disbelief. Which had no in-game consequences, of course, but it wasn't how Hazzan liked to play. So, trying to keep quiet and hidden, she awaited the younger blueblood's arrival.

Lunear was too small to jump through trees yet. Or really scale mountain tops, (piles of things). He also was too tiny to properly hold a great deal of items in his backpack of carrying. A disadvantage to start off with, but an advantage in the fact that another troll was taking him in and helping him along.

Previously he was a one man flarper, making stuff up as he went, masked, pretending he was simply better than others and didn't need a group. The reality was however, that a group or at least a partner was nice. Useful even.

The crunch of a few leaves under his boots had already given himself away, and his rope tied to a stick make shift whip was his weapon of choice mostly because apparently he wasn't just not allowed a weapon but also was to small to properly use it and not accidentally kill himself.

Wearing his cape and mask, the blue blood tried his best to walk with confidence into the clearly, like he was opposite to what he felt. Invincible. "I have-" He declared. "Arrived." A finger pointed to the sky.
"Come beasts and fowl abominations, I, Lunosi Regals shall vanquish you!"

He'd even chosen himself a persona.

Hazzan bit down on her tongue, trying to keep from whooping with excitement as Lunear strode into the clearing. He certainly had the swagger down pat - but he was pointing in the wrong direction, and Hazzan questioned whether she'd made the stump too realistic. But only for a second, after which she sprang her trap.

The tree stump sprang from the ground, its roots forming great crab legs, pincers arcing over its head. Two mushrooms became eyes, and the crab blinked at the young troll for a moment before scuttling sideways and taking a swipe at his sword.

He'd asked for a beast and a fowl abomination, and hopefully this was to his tastes. Hazzan pressed herself to the trunk of her hiding place, though she was having no luck with actually flattening herself (and never had), and craned her neck to watch the battle.

This monster was, well, she'd given it sort of high stats. She was really interested to see how Lunear held up against it - of course, if things got too dire, she'd step in. But getting your first bruises in LARP was practically a rite of passage! And breaking a bone was definitely also a rite of passage. Right? Right.

He was in the middle of puffing up proudly like a strutting strut bird beast when suddenly, a thing happened.

The thing initially made Lunear shout with surprise, though he did his best to mask it with a look of determination and will. He would not be caught flat footed by such a thing.
Except he had been.
And it hurt.

It managed to pinch at him and grab his sword to which got the blue blood to curse. Child or no, he swore and fought to reclaim his blade. "Back creature! There will be none of your ilk to bother me in my quest this night!"

He kicked at it.

And it pinched back.
Yelping and stumbling back as it clung to a hand the blue blood was rather undignified in how he flailed, only doing damage by reallying hitting the stump crab into nearby objects.

Eventually he killed it by hitting it against a rock while attempting to free his hand which was now a lovely blue and darkening bruise.
He sat down, frowned, and whined "Unfair, it disarmed me!"

Hazzan had definitely expected her trap to give the little troll some trouble, and she was proud of him for finishing it off so handily, even without his sword. But a pouting player was a player who would not progress to the next part of the game, and that was no good. Hazzan rolled her eyes at her game grub. She sighed in frustration. "Okay, fine," she said. "Time out."

The remaining flapstractions in the clearing froze in place, and Hazzan hopped out of her hiding place. She crouched beside Lunear. "Hey," she said, smiling at him. "You did a good job. Bad guys aren't always gonna fight fair, and if you want to grow up to be a big, strong troll, you've gotta learn to anticipate that."

FLARP was, after all, one of the best ways to prepare for the duties of troll adulthood. Or at least that was how Hazzan viewed it. For a certain value of preparedness.

"Let me see your hand," she said, reaching for it. She cradled Lunear's bruised hand between her palms. "Ooh!" she gasped appreciatively. "That is a super nice bruise. Show that one to all your friends and tell them how tough you are! Do you want to keep playing? There's a treasure at the end, but I'd understand if you were too injured to fight..."

Obviously, Hazzan wanted to finish the game. It was only a matter of goading the kid into it...

He fussed over his hand, not yet finding the discoloration, or rather, the lovely alteration of his blood shade, any sort of appealing. Yet, the key aspect of any young troll to bet.

"I always do a good job, but it- it took my weapon! Like a common thug with muted blood!" He sighed, poking at the discoloration with a cringe. Pain now, indignation fading. "True though, I shouldn't expect every troll or future hostile to fight on our level." He gave a tone to his voice, teals were like him, above the others... even if they were moderates really on the full spectrum.

His hand given without though, he cringed again as it was touched. He would be tender for a while. "...." He would easily create a much better story for his 'wound' than 'a stumpcrab did it'.
"....What kind of treasure is it exactly?"

"Here," Hazzan said, taking pity on the little troll. She picked up his sword and handed it back to him. "You beat it! It tried and it had to resort to dirty tactics and you still beat it, so, like, you're the best! Woo!" FLARPing with highbloods was always a matter of building up their egos and making them feel important, even when they were just little highbloods like Lunear - she'd learned that much from playing with Frossa.

"If I told you want the treasure was," she said mysteriously, getting back to her feet and offering Lunear a hand, "then I'd spoil the ending of the story! You wouldn't want that, would you?"

The treasure didn't really have value outside the game, anyway - but she could see his interest waning, and that was bad.

"I will tell you that it's a magical artifact that grants the wearer great power!" she said, urging the younger troll back towards the path. "Come on! If you're not feeling so great, I'll help you fight the final boss."

She'd programmed the flapstractions enough to run them remotely, she thought. Even if she preferred to stay out of things, getting involved couldn't hurt... She unpaused the flapstractions, and the game world began to weave itself around them again. Hazzan raised her quill high in the air, leading the way.

The tiny blue's ego was easily inflated. Sword back in hand, pride and ego rubbed, Lunear puffed back up a bit, looking less deflated, and more ready for another round. Such was the both fragility and easily mended pride of a youthful highblood.

Getting up on his own he tried to make a show that no, he didn't need her help, he was strong enough to do so one his own. Dusting off his rump and clothes. "No." His answer was solid and firm, holding out his hand as dramatically as he could muster.

"That artifact is mine to seek and seek alone. Like a true tragic hero of any great saga. I must endure, and that mean no sidekicks." He looked the teen dead in the eye. "Even if they would be very good sidekicks."

After a few steps however.
"On second thought- yeah. Every good hero needs a sidekick. Because then it's just boring if the hero is so good they don't...sometimes need help. NOT ALWAYS I MEAN. Just with like, the big stuff."

Like the boss.

Hazzan sighed inwardly, grateful that her efforts had been successful and Lunear's ego was at least as big as it had been before - maybe bigger. Once he'd accepted her as his sidekick, she fell back, letting him lead the way, and that was just fine because it gave her a chance to double-check that everything in the clearing ahead would appear as it should.

"You don't always need help," she assured him, her preparations taken care of. "I mean, I saw how you finished off that stump crab all by yourself! You were fierce! Like a bloody conquerer!"

Up ahead, the flapstractions had begun to gather and swirl, fluttering together to take the form of a - well, it wasn't huge, but it was certainly a medium-sized dragon if there ever was one, scaly and green and perched on top of a treasure-chest, wings outstretched to fill the clearing.

"There, Lunear!" cried Hazzan melodramatically, pointing with her quill. "The great treasure-krait! Kill it and then we can take the treasure!"

The dragon screeched dramatically, and she was once again glad to have bought the deluxe game grub - not only were its graphics top-notch, so was the sound!

Sure it might have been a game, but it was also training. Very important life training given the future of many who would join the army. So as much as Lunear might have found the idea he needed help annoying, the reality was he had to get used to it. There would be no future Lunear without.

His ego patted more and inflated to a point of near bursting with pride, the blue troll kid did his best to lead as confident and gallantly into the thick of it. A deep breath as the game changed, the treasure and boss- now in sight.

"Alright." He attempted to do the spin the sword in one hand but nearly dropped it. Points for trying at least.

"Don't worry my dear sidekick- I know just how to deal with this beast!" He charged forward, swinging his blade at the beast's wings.
"Cut it from the air- a crippled dragon is a dead dragon!" This time, Lunear was a bit more astute- minding the tail swipe.

The dragon writhed and screeched and shot some very realistic-looking flames in Lunear's direction, but ultimately, it had been designed to be killed. Lunear's sword swept easily through the delicately-rendered tendons in the beast's back, and, now wingless, it thumped to the ground.

Acid-green blood spurted from the stumps. The dragon roared as it lifted itself up on its lizard-like legs and advanced towards the pair of young trolls.

"Good thinking!" Hazzan shouted encouragingly to Lunear. He'd been right to go for her dragon's first weak spot - but could he find the others? She leapt out of the way of a burst of flame with swiftness uncharacteristic of her size. It was unfortunate that she'd designed this beast without her weapon's very short reach in mind.

In other words, Lunear was on his own to kill it.

"Finish it off!" Hazzan hollered.

To Lunear everything was deadly- it had to be. Game or not, this was combat training. Even the most basic of trolls could understand that. He also had to admire the craftsmanship of his foe- or well, of the one who made his foe. It was all very well done. The green blood was a nice touch really, even if it would have been better with a more orange or lower color. Just for..perhaps his own mental comfort. But in battle blood didn't matter.

Winning did.

While Hazzan got out of the way, Lunear used his still small size to take refuge behind a large rock for a brief time. When he came round the beast was on it's hind legs, looking still very intimidating. Yet he couldn't sit idle as a dragon wreaked havoc. It was his job to slay it!

As the dragon came back down to all fours to snap at the tiny troll, Lunear held his sword up, letting it's own weight be it's downfall. Stabbing through the scales wasn't a thing he could guarantee to do on his own so he let the dragon do it for him. "You gluttony shall be your undoing foul one! Taste cold steel!" Or something like that.

Lunear's sword sank into the dragon's gut, and it roared and thrashed in pain. This only served to drive the sword further in and widen the gash, and some moments later, the beast exploded into lovingly-rendered chunks of gore and splashes of green blood, transforming the clearing into a particularly gruesome murder scene. (You know, like from TrollCSI.)

"Amazing!" cheered Hazzan, as the blast cleared. "Hey, let's get our treasure!"

She pointed to the treasure chest that the dragon had been perched atop. "Go open it!" she told Lunear, giving him a bit of a nudge. The chest wasn't rigged, aside from to let out a little puff of glittering smoke when opened, and inside lay a helmet carefully crafted out of spare metal and adorned with little glass jewels, along with a bag of gummy candies.

"It's the great Helm of Shazwow!" she explained. "It grants the wearer +2 protection and +1 intuition!"

It also looked supremely dorky, with the slits cut out of the sides for the wearer's horns and all.

Lunear wasn't old enough for TrollCSI yet. Batbro was strangely very scrict in what she allowed him to watch on TV. But he did get to watch several other shows which were..less than kid friendly. Apparently Batbro didn't consider 'Dexter' to be a very bad show... though Lunear found a few scenes rather messy and slightly disturbing.

Shaking himself off from just instinct, he smiled when the chest came into view. There was his prize. Quest one: Completed! Dashing over in excitement, he dropped his sword as he grabbed the box. "Yessssssssssss." He hissed. Realizing that Hazzan was still watching him he coughed, getting back into character. "The treasure of the beast is something to be shared good sidekick! A true hero does his duty for the good of all- the loot is but a bonus!" He posed for a second before opening the chest.

Smoke and glitter waved away, the Helm was placed on the ground, the gummies set next to as he checked for anything else. Finding nothing. He smiled. "Shazwow." He uttered, slowly placing it on his own head.

Picking up the bag of candies, he nodded. "We are most fortuitous." The bag was opened, held up in offering. "Well, hold out your hands- I don't have a bag of holding for you else I'd use that." He fully intended to give her some because while he might have slain the beast... she'd been supremely helpful. And one good gesture could pay off down the road.

Hazzan eyed the bag of candies, salivating but chewing her tongue to quell her temptation. She'd expected Lunear to be selfish and want them all to himself, but then, she also hadn't counted on jumping in and helping the game. "No thanks," she said, trying to act like it was no big deal, trying to hide how badly she actually wanted one of the gummies. "You should enjoy them all! You earned them."

She put her game grub to sleep and tucked it into her bag, and checked the time on her watch. It was getting early. "We'd better get back to town," she said, looking off towards town. "The sun will be rising soon." She reached over and patted the younger troll on the back cheerfully. To make her point, she yawned over-dramatically. "Koaowl's gonna expect me home for dinner. I bet your Lusus will be waiting for you, too."
