Personality xxSly, charming, and a smooth-talker, Brynjolf represents the best of a thief operating in plain sunlight. With a silken way of words and exotic accent, there are few who can't help turning an ear towards his voice. A roughish tilt of the lips is not an uncommon sight to see on the Nord, as if he is always walking around knowing something you don't. Crafty and clever, Brynjolf is someone who knows how to get the job done, and some might say he was simply born to be a thief.
xxBrynjolf embodies thievery in nearly all aspects of himself - he certainly enjoys thieving well enough. More than a means to survive, thieving is Brynjolf's way of life, one that he both enjoys and excels in. He is a master of misdirection and disguise, yet is also capable of slinking through the shadows, allowing him to operate both as a whisper in the night and a bold shadow in broad daylight. Cunning and sly, Brynjolf approaches all problems from an angle rather than head on. He is extremely skilled at reading people, getting a feel of their strengths and weaknesses, and using those against them if he feels the need, almost to the point of being manipulative. However, he almost always latches onto the potential for greatness he perceives in people, whether to see them grow or to use their greatness for his own purposes.
xxBrynjolf's intuitiveness also plays a part in his information gathering skills. Part of what makes Brynjolf an effective thief is his ability to learn anything and everything possible about a target, before he goes into action. This need for information is what drives Brynjolf to be almost constantly active, whether he is roaming the streets of Riftin listening for news, or pacing throughout the cistern, observing and looming over the going-ons of all the members. Brynjolf's information gathering lets him avoid otherwise sticky situations that he would not be able to slip past or talk his way out of. Though he is a physically orientated person who is well in shape, Brynjolf knows the power of words, and much prefers talking over brute force. He is a charmer, prone to encouraging or complimenting others in an attempt to butter them up - though, he has no qualms being frank and honest, especially when it concerns Thieves Guild members giving the guild a bad reputation.
xxDespite his tendencies to manipulate or steer the people around him (strangers and unknown people especially), Brynjolf tends to become more sincere as he gets to know the person, viewing them as another living being rather than a potentially useful contributor. With a natural want to see others grow and excel, he makes a fairly good teacher, passing on his wisdom and knowledge to other thieves - and potential ones. Brynjolf holds genuine concern over those close to him, worrying for their safety or counseling them on the safest road. As one of the oldest and more experienced members of the Thieves Guild, Brynjolf acts somewhat as a mentor for other members, someone with a plethora of information and skills to teach. His roughish demeanor can almost be seen as affectionate around those he truly cares for.
xxBrynjolf's perchance for affection grows the more he gets to know someone. He is quite friendly, even nice, often laughing and drinking with other Guild members in a genuine fashion. The closer he becomes to a person, the less he sees them as someone to use or mold to his fitting. Some people even consider him sweet, the way he looks out for and takes care of his good friends. Brynjolf is also not above flirting with a pretty woman, usually just in good and casual fun rather than anything serious. It may take a while for Brynjolf to fully appreciate someone, but once they get into his good graces, he remains loyal to those he calls family.
xxOverall, Brynjolf is a sly and cunning thief, who takes his job as the Thieves Guild's second-in-command seriously. He is not above using those around him to get what he wants, but retains a genuinely caring core that looks out for and protects those he calls his own.
History xx Brynjolf was born in Riften on a blustery morning during Sun's Dust, two the joy of his mother and father. From such a normal and happy beginning, trouble would soon fall on the family when Brynjolf was seven years old. His father, catching a ride on the Sea Dragon vessel to complete some merchant trades, was killed by a Dark Brotherhood assassin. Found in the wrong place at the wrong time, Brynjolf's father was just an innocent bystander who happened to be in the way of the real mark, thus signaling his untimely end at the hands of the Brotherhood. Devastated at the news, Brynjolf's mother began wasting away, trying her best to keep her son healthy but slowly waxing in health. By the time Brynjolf was ten years old, his mother had passed, and he was sent to Honorhall Orphanage.
xxBrynjolf hated it almost immediately. Grelod the Kind's terrorizing soon had him looking for means of escape, sometimes getting punished if he was caught attempting to scale the wall. Brynjolf finally did manage to break his way to freedom by slipping past Grelod during nighttime inspections, and from then on, Brynjolf was on his own.
xxHe wouldn't stay that way for long, however. With no viable options to feed himself, the obvious choice turned him to thievery and begging off the streets, always careful to escape to his hiding hole should an orphanage worker come around. Unfortunately - or fortunately, in hindsight - Brynjolf wasn't very skilled in picking out his targets yet, and he made the mistake of pickpocketing a boy about the same age as himself, who was actually a rookie in the Thieves Guild. He was found out immediately, but instead of turning Brynjolf over to the Orphanage, the boy - called Gallus Desidenius - invited him to join his family.
xxThus began Brynjolf's life in the Thieves Guild, one that he has considered a blessing all throughout his life. Under the tutelage of some of the best thieves in Skyrim, Brynjolf quickly started following in their footsteps. He became quite skilled with the art of misdirection and manipulation, often acting as a distraction for other Guild members. The work was hard, and Brynjolf had to spend some time in jail for his mistakes, but the Thieves Guild became more of a family to him than his half-remembered biological family. Gallus, along with a Dunmer named Karliah, became his best friends in the guild, and they were soon reaching acclaim as the craftiest and thickest trio of thieves Riften had seen in ages.
xxBrynjolf was content with his life as he continued honing his skills, but when he was twenty-six, a desperate Karliah suddenly approached him with a request. Brynjolf followed her and Gallus to an old ruin, and to his immense surprise, the two of them asked that he undergo an initiation to become a Nightingale, a secreted faction within the Thieves Guild that had only been known as a myth. Amidst his doubts, Brynjolf eventually accepted, and the three of them set out to stop a highly skilled necromancer from breaking into the Twilight Sepulcher. Afterwards, Karliah and Gallus apologized for keeping their identities a secret, but they had been convinced that Brynjolf would one day join their ranks.
xxReturning to the Guild was a bit harrowing after the experience, but Brynjolf hadn't become a master of disguise for nothing. With his Nightingale armor safely hidden and stored away, he, along with his two friends, returned to their business at the guild. Oftentimes, one of the three would disappear for a period of time - Gallus, usually - or sometimes even two or three all at once. It became an unspoken rule not to question the on-goings of the trusted Thieves Guild members, as they always returned safe and whole, with the Thieves Guild continuing to thrive.
xxThe Nightingales would face another challenge however, at the sudden death of Gallus. If Brynjolf was devastated by the loss of his best friend, it was nothing compared to Karliah, who went into mourning and become increasingly inactive as a Nightingale. One Agent of Nocturnal short, the other essentially disappeared from activity, Brynjolf became harried with both Thieves Guild and Nightingale duties. It wasn't until he discovered another attempted theft on the Twilight Sepulcher that Brynjolf decided to repeat Karliah's example, and recruit a new Nightingale into the force. He ended up choosing Dahlia, a thief he had recruited into the Thieves Guild years before, who had already shown great promise as a leader. As he had years before, Brynjolf traveled to the Ruins, and Dahlia became the newest Nightingale. Together, they stopped the new threat to the Sepulcher, and closed the gap left by Gallus' death.
xxThe influence of the Thieves Guild began waning around this time, prompting the Guildmaster to start sending out members in order to regain influence. Brynjolf was often chosen for the task, resulting in his travels all across Skyrim. He became quite worldly and knowledgable through the years, and met several interesting people along the way. But he always returned to his home and family in Riftin, and to the core of his being as a thief. At the present, Brynjolf is perfectly content with his lot in life. Being second-in-command suits him just fine, and allows him to stretch out his wings more often than not.

 Weapon
Wrath of Nocturnal - An Ebony dagger, enchanted with Silent Moons Enchant and Chaos Damage. Claimed to be a bribe gift from one of the court wizards in Solitude, Brynjolf uses Wrath of Nocturnal in his left hand, as his weaker hand strikes faster and weaker than his main hand.
Soulbane - A Daedric dagger of unknown origin. It took Brynjolf and several members of the Thieves guild to steal this rare dagger, but after nearly a month of planning, they were able to seize the weapon off an artifact collector's ship, along with several other pieces of merchandise.
Character Skill Set
xxWeapon Skills
One-Handed Weaponry :: Specifically, Brynjolf excels in dual-wielding weapons, especially daggers. If forced into a corner with no other options, Brynjolf will fall to his daggers to fight his way out.
Light Armor :: Unsurprisingly, Brynjolf prefers being able to move fast and silently, rather than protect himself from a lot of damage - his fighting style relies more on not getting hit, after all. Light armor provides enough coverage for him to withstand attacks, but not impair his movement or reflexes.
Illusion :: Magic is not something Brynjolf is naturally gifted in, and he more often than not prefers a physical approach. However, he has gone through some pains to learn some of the Illusion school of magic, simply for its versatility and manipulation of the mind. Illusion magic has gotten him out of some tights spots before, but it's more of a last resort out of a messy situation than a full-on battle strategy.
xxNightingale Skills
Sneak :: Essential for any thief or rogue, Brynjolf has long mastered the art of moving undetected. Being able to sneak up on enemies to take them by surprise - or simply slip pass them - is an invaluable tool for his line of work, and Brynjolf knows it.
Pickpocketing :: Another basic skill set for a good thief, the pockets of Riften end up considerably lighter whenever the Thieves Guild needs to send a message. Brynjolf is fairly good at either picking or lining the pockets of Riften, though he usually operates by somehow physically colliding with the person rather than attempt a sneaky lift or lining.
Lockpicking :: The last skill that most thieves train themselves in, Brynjolf knows just about every lock there is to know about, and the best ways to deal with them. The only ones he runs into real trouble with are magical locks, making the College of Winterhold a particularly difficult target. Otherwise, Brynjolf keeps a healthy number of lock picks on him, for whatever chest or safe he may be after.
xxCharacter Skills
Speech :: "You can steal ten-fold with a quill than you can with a sword." Brynjolf fully believes in the power of words and their effect on people, and has not become a silver-tongued thief for nothing. Whether he is attempting to charm a newcomer, weasel his way out of a mess, or bargain a better deal from a partner, Brynjolf knows how to get what he wants with silken and honeyed words.
Luck :: Though Brynjolf can't really claim it to be an achieved skill, even he cannot deny the considerable luck he's had throughout his years, especially after becoming a Nightingale. Though not infallible, sometimes the strangest mistakes or occurrences still end up working in Brynjolf's favor. He's certainly not one to complain, even if the entire Nocturnal business still seems a bit too far-fetched for him.
Resist Frost :: A native of Skyrim through and through, Brynjolf has a natural resistance against the cold. He is particularly sturdy against Frost attacks and damage, along with being able to withstand the unforgiving northern winds better than non-Nords.

Character Relationships
Dahlia Aldwyr :: "Aye, that's my Guild Master, and I've no qualms against her. The lass has got a good head on her shoulders, for all she likes to pour mead into it. Hah, makes for a good companion at the tavern, that's for sure! I was the one that happened to recruit her into the Guild, and Oblivion knows I haven't regretted it once. Dahlia's one of the few I trust with my life - she's family, simple as is, and my blades'll be finding anyone who thinks of turning coat against her."
