No one paid him enough to deal with little assholes. Why couldn't kids be more like Gale? Mature? Dignified? Not little assholes that apparently needed to be taken out for assessments in defending skills and crap. He'd texted the girl an hour ago, far more than enough time to prep, and now waiting for her to arrive on the training field, Marcus picked at the thickly wrapped bandage on his side and arm. Two days into healing, and yet he'd still need to go back before the wounds had completely sealed. If anything he was just glad that he still had use of his arm. He clicked away on his phone, wondering if he could just send the trainee to play retcon for him.

She blamed Taym for the message she'd received. He was the type to tattle, and it seemed logical that the first thing he'd do when he found out she wasn't sparring, was to call on one of the older hunters and force her to spar. There was no proof that it was him, and really, it could have been any number of things that had gotten Marcus' attention, but she still blamed Taym, because he was an easy target. Still, this was what she wanted, so she'd shown up without a responding text, still wearing her pretty little yellow raincoat, with her matching boats, and matching sunflower umbrella. A little dollie, walking out in the gale force wind and rain. The umbrella threatened to cave on her, and she closed it quickly, jolting into a run as soon as the hood was pelted with rain. She stopped nearby him, tilted her head up to get a good look at him, and smiled. It was a cold, friendless smile. "Maebe." She introduced herself. Thaw was in her hands within moments. "Let's get this over with."

"Marcus" Was his response. The coat just got a look followed with a shrug. Hey, her hindrance, not his. "One- I'd reccomend fighting without the get up to better prepare your for actual experience in this type of weather. Two-" He lunged at her, Dis out and flashing. "Defend." HP: 60 DMG: 9

Ooh, actual advice. Wasn't he just such a helpful little thing. She wouldn't listen to his first piece of advice, however - because she had priorities. Moon did not like her priorities, but she did. That was all that mattered. He sliced a sword at her, and she felt the now-familiar sting of a too-hard hit. He wasn't going to take it easy on her - that made her smile. "Yes, sir." There was so much sarcasm in her voice, that she might as well have been cursing him out. She used Thaw to try and defend from the attack, but only managed to nick him with one of the trident prongs instead. Marcus did try to be helpful in his own way- except that he often lacked a good way to communicate such. "Better, but your tone can use improvement. If you take that attitude with those who are the ones in charge of things chances are you'll be missing s**t that will keep you alive." Another slash, this one at her torso, Marcus put one hand behind his back. "Try to parry the blow rather than strike back. Use the force that's presented to your advantage." Maebe thought her tone was just fine, but the b*****d had a point. If she got snarky with a lead, they might just leave her to the wolves. She hated the fact that kissing up would keep her alive, but it was a fact of life. It was also a lesson she'd learned long ago - but needed severe reminding of, now. So she listened. "Yes, sir." This time, the sarcasm had left her voice. Maybe Marcus wasn't a lead, but he was trying to help her. He would stop, if she didn't show some sign of improvement. Speaking of which, she stared at him in confusion, until the sword ripped through her. That was a parry, for her. "OWW." She knocked him upside the head with the trident's staff. "What the hell is a parry!" HP: 21 Damage: 7 Charge: 2/3

His free hand went to his temple, feeling for any wetness that would allude to blood. Feeling nothing but a dull throb he stepped back, giving Maebe a distinct advantage. He moved slower, deliberately showing off the movement of the weapon. "Consider the weapons. A scimitar is a curved sword ideal for slashing and slice motions in close combat. A trident is polearm best used to maintain distance and stab or halt forward motion. To parry is to use the oncoming attack to ready your own. That doesn't mean attacking back directly- it means being ready to attack when the motion is done." He came back at her, though slowly again, showing her how the slice might have gone. "Use my weapon to your advantage. I have to get close to you in order to strike and if you can deflect my attack and place me within your range by guiding the force of motion?" He smiled, pulling back. "Then you'll have learned the basics of a parry." One arm behind his back, sword at the ready, he waited. HP: 52 Defending for: 5

The only lesson she'd gotten out of that was that her weapon should be used to keep people at a distance. She had sort of figured that one out on her own, but she liked being told formally that she was on the right track. When he continued to explain parrying to her, her expression went a little vacant and disinterested. She probably needed to learn this, but.. "So.. I guess, like.." She lifted the trident to try and block his sword, but it didn't stick. She was instantly trying to stab him again almost immediately. HP: 21 Damage: 3 negated Charge: 3/3

Marcus blocked and swung back- "See, use the enemy's force against them. Recklessly attacking opens you up to attacks in turn. Watch your opponent's body movements. Learn to read their feet, how people move. How people react when you move a certain way. Be aware of your distinct advantages, and analized what you know of your opponent's weaknesses." He knew he wasn't exactly being 'kind' in his attacks. "My advantage is a stronger weapon, a stronger resistance- so how do you get past that?" HP: 52 DMG: 12

Maebe knew she was in trouble the moment that strike came down on her, all but destroying her shield. Thaw let out an uncharacteristic scream, warning her that he couldn't protect her any longer. She didn't expect it all to end this fast.. and yet, despite being the quickest spar she'd been in so far, she felt like she'd learned more than the others. Even if the only thing she'd learned is that defending sucks. It was a lesson she was about to confirm, as she braced herself, her weapon in front of her, using it to actually try to parry his next move. She didn't know if she could get it right this time, but if her time had run out, this was the last chance she had. She had no answer to his question. So instead, she just smirked. "Say please?" (Marcus you didn't do a Gale I am so proud) "No." It was curt answer, followed by quick slash towards her midsection. The trident got the edge of his blade, sending it higher than his target- now his attack had landed near her shoulder. He pulled back watching her for a moment before unsummoning Desidero from his hand, putting the weapon back where he belonged. "You adapt, you use anything and everything you can. The ability to adapt is a hunter's greatest strength. A human's greatest strength. Every time we fight we're going to have to not just anticipate our enemy but also ourselves, how we'll react to certain attacks." He offered her a hand. "You did pretty well, but you'll need more core training on defense basics, as well as tactics. I'll put in a request to see that you can get more time allotted for doing the Mist tower as well as the Princess Island. You also might benefit from doing some research on the weapons used by horsemen, since those are often our primary aggressors." HP: 52 DMG: 9-5=4

The attack slammed into her shoulder, sending that side of her body back before the rest of it. She twirled, all the way around, and dropped down like a stone when the rotation had ended. Thaw let out one last gutteral growl before he dissipated in her hands, leaving her shieldless and mortifyingly vulnerable. She felt human again. She hated the feeling. Adaptation was a weak point for her. She winced when she heard the inflection on the word human, as if he'd somehow reached in to read her mind and knew exactly what she was thinking. She was left exposed, in ways she despised, and immediately pushed herself up to a seated position as though curling inward could protect her from it. But it did nothing. She barely heard him rattle off a new list of things to do. She'd been avoiding responsibility for so long.. and this was where it had led her. "Yes.." She paused, biting her tongue in her best attempt to not sound sarcastic. "Sir."

He watched her for a second then pulled his hand back. In his experience if it wasn't taken immediately, it wouldn't be taken at all.
"You'll get better. Just takes practice." A small wave, he began to walk away. "If you need anything my number should be easy enough to find. I'll have the files and evaluation done by tonight."
He left her alone on the field, hoping that maybe, she'd take some of his advice. Or Maybe not.
