The day had been bright and clear. The air crisp with winter chill but not terribly cold. The southern forests still held a warmth amid the trees, some bare, others with dark green needles. But the sun was lowering, only inches from the horizon, lighting the few clouds with golden fire.

Akos had been walking all day. There was still light, he could keep going for likely another hour, but the small clearing made by a forest giant falling some time in the past seemed the perfect location for the evening's rest. A small brook burbled nearby and the stump of the fallen tree was a perfect place to put his lantern.
So he set the lantern down and worked his jaw for a moment before opening the tiny door on the side of the brass and glass thing. It had been a fortunate find and little Anne, the sprite he carried about, loved it very much. Jack, the sprite that followed him, or, more likely, followed Anne, buzzed to the opening and set about what Akos could only suppose was his evening wooing.
With a smile, Akos left the two to get a drink from the brook. He'd bring them something they might like to eat later. For now, he had been walking all day and a drink and a rest would be nice.
