Aramis lay immobile in the warm afternoon sunshine, his hat covering his face and providing shade and privacy both. It wasn't much, but as far as he was concerned it was enough. Long ago, he had come to the realization that if there were certain things he wanted, he would need to take advantage of any opportunity to which they presented him. Things which he would long ago have taken for granted, such as quiet, solitude, independence, and privacy had long ago gone the way of his service as a warhorse. What was past was, quite literally, in the past.

It was all of his own making, he knew. Whatever his faults, which he knew with no false pride to be many, he was not a Soquili to cast blame where it had no business being. Had he been a different sort of Soquili, he might not now be lamenting the many changes his life had seen. He might even now be on the move, charging into battle with a human on his back or helping to direct troop movements.

It was funny how something so small and trivial could alter the path of one's life, Aramis mused from the shadowy cover of his hat. More importantly, it was funny how something as seemingly unimportant as understanding the customs of a region could blow up catastrophically in one's face.

He paused at the thought, turning it carefully over in his mind. Is that what he considered his life to be now, a catastrophe? It was true that this life of domesticity was not what he had intended for himself, and that he almost daily had to fight a battle between his honor (along with his conscience) and his wanderlust. He was never meant to be a one-mare stallion, just like he was never meant to be a constant fellow, yet here he was, as both. The birth of his sons had bound him to Saiena with as much permanence as any substance in the Soquili universe, as far as he was concerned.

Darned honor.

It wasn't that Saiena was an unpleasant mare, he would be the first to say. She was a sweet girl, very pretty and perky and loving. That had been the problem all along, she was just so...naive. It had been capitivating even while it had been repellant, flashing like a giant warning beacon that the stallion of the world Aramis ought to stay far, far away.

Well, he hadn't, and now he was paying for it. Their sons were grown, so Aramis had more freedom than he used to, but it still wasn't enough. There was so much more he craved for his life, in terms of action, inaction, socialization...yet as far as he was concerned, there was no way out to experience it. He was as trapped as a creature in a cage.

Spektre wandered through the lands rather aimlessly, he was away from his mate and it was rather uncomfortable… Like a piece of himself had been able to go on a walk about. Although he had come to these lands so long ago with a plan to be single and free… to see all the things that were around, he had fallen fast and hard for a spirited beauty that kept him laughing at all times. Did he ever what life would be like if he had never come upon his gorgeous Pavo? Sure, but in the way one might wonder what life would be like if one had been born with a missing limb. The idea was interesting to imagine, but not something that any one person, himself included, would be willing to sign up for. Sparkling blue pelt, bouncing curls, and a whimsical hair accessories made Spektre stick out like a sore thumb and also made him particularly observant of other blue things the happened to be around him. He was quite certain that there was a stallion up ahead lazing in the sun. Either he was lazing, or he was in trouble of some sort.

If the latter of the two, the other might resent being disturbed… but if injured and needing assistance; Spektre would probably be a welcomed sight. Well, there was only one real way to figure out if one’s presence was desirable or detestable and that was to dive on in face first.

“Hello over there…. Do you fancy company, or would your mind prefer it’s own musings?” The voice had a lullaby-smooth rhythm and a little bit of gravel to it because in truth, Spektre spoke to very few others and they were far between Truth be told it had been so long since he had been up and wandering around during the daylight hours that is was just a little bit on the strange side. Spektre had a lot on his mind right now, enough so that he was experiencing a sort of insomnia… He and Pavo were about to take the plunge and make children a part of their reality. It was almost too much to imagine.

Would their little ones look like a blend of them? Take more after one than the other? Would they be as kind and sassy as their mother? Or as laid-back and dreamy as he tended to be? What about keeping them safe? What about helping them to grow up and not be terrible little monsters roaming the lands? Although Spek had just spoken to the blue lump of, most likely a stallion, he was once again lost in his terrifying musings. Lord, what made him think that he had any business having babies? Pavo would be a fabulous mother, she was fabulous in all ways… but him?

The voice that broke in on Aramis' musings was low and pleasant, in no way abrasive or harsh on the ears. As far as the voice itself was concerned, he had no qualms; it was the kind of voice that would be well-suited to mediating disputes or commanding the attention of a troop movement. But the voice itself aside, was the interruption an unwelcome one? Aramis lay quietly for a few moments longer, weighing the desire for solitude against the possibility of novelty. Whoever this voice belonged to, it was unfamiliar.

Those few moments were all it took for Aramis to flick his hat back out of his face and take in the Soquili that went with the voice. Interesting.

"I do not know you, mon ami, so I would be most appreciative of your company." Perhaps a little bewildering of a greeting, but the facts of the matter were that Aramis was tired. Tired of uniformity. tired of duty, tired of familiarity. He had too ingrained a sense of honor to kick off everything and disappear, but that didn't mean he didn't yearn for at least a taste of the adventurous and the unknown.

As he spoke, Aramis had drawn raised himself up to his feet, mentally noting as he did so that his slight, graceful frame looked downright childish beside his companion. How long had it been since he was the small one in any gathering? The idea made him smile in spite of himself, and he inclined his head at the other stallion in a gesture of nothing so much as gratitude. "You must think me a strange fellow, laying in such a manner in such an exposed area. Yet I do not find myself to be too strange, as a rule. I am called Aramis." It had been a long time since he had engaged in any introduction, but there were some things a stallion never forgot. "What brings you to this region?"
