Needless to say, when Tohru stepped through the door of the home he shared with his brother, he'd felt nothing but relief. Stupid dunkels had assailed him part of the way! As far as he was concerned, he was lucky to be alive! "You made it! I was starting to worry!" Kasen breathed out in relief as he approached from the kitchen. Tohru had only an instant to wonder what he'd been doing in there... Kasen didn't do dishes, and they didn't have any food or snacks! But the train of thought vanished quickly as the little Kiandri was then scooped up into a nearly back-breaking hug. Kasen didn't free him until a tiny squeak was pulled from Tohru's lips. "So, did you have any luck hunting dinner?" Kasen asked. He had that warm smile, and his deep brown orbs were glimmering by the light of their home.

Tohru's heart sank. He knew Kasen had wanted meat, but all he'd brought back was... He suddenly realized... there wasn't any weight resting across his shoulders. His slim fingers darted up to touch the spot where the straps of his bag would be, but there was nothing. His widened golden orbs leaped up to meet Kasen's. How was he to say he now had nothing? He must've lost the back while he was flailing and trying to escape the dunkels! He briefly wondered if they could've carried it off, but surely not. Maybe Tennor would vouch for him. And then, his fingers shot up to Tennor's usual perch, only to find that it too, was empty... "Tennor!" Tohru squeaked out in alarm, his little heart pounding a mile a minute. They'd gotten him too! The berries were one thing, but they had Tennor, his only friend!

It didn't take Kasen long to realize that something was amiss. Especially when fearful tears sprung up into Tohru's eyes. "What's the matter, brother?" The Gaili whispered softly as he knelt down to Tohru's eye level.

The younger Dovaa could hardly contain himself, despite doing all he could to keep it together. "I-I went... hunting, like you asked me to..." He started out, instantly finding it even more difficult to speak than usual with how tight his chest had become. "I managed to find something to eat, so I p-put it... in the pack you gave me." He paused here again to suck in a breath and rub at his eyes. "B-but on the way back..." It was nearly impossible to continue. He was sure if he said anything else, it would only come out as sobs. "Tennor and I were attacked by flying creatures...! And now he's gone!" Tohru sniffled pitifully, slumping down into Kasen's open and waiting arms with heavy sobs wrackig his body. He let his slim arms tuck into his brother's shirt, finding just an ounce of protection in the way the older man could completely envelope him. But Tennor... He was just a tiny Fae dragon. Who would protect him from those dunkels? Tears rolled down his cheeks, and it was all he could do to press his face into Kasen's shirt to quell them.

"Sh, little brother. It's alright." Kasen soothed, running his fingers through the end of Tohru's ponytail. "Why don't we go out and look for him? You haven't been home long; he can't have gotten far." After a moment, Tohru nodded, and Kasen rose slowly. "I'll get a lantern."

It wasn't long after that they were off. Kasen held his younger brother's hand in one of his own, and the other carried the lantern. Tohru had never really wanted for anything, but in this moment, he wished Kasen had a Hastar or something that could get them quickly and efficiently to where poor Tennor was... What if they never found him, and he was stuck all alone for the rest of his life? Or what if he was already... gone...? The Kiandri quivered and clutched Kasen's hand tighter.

The lantern didn't offer much by way of light. There were no stars, no moon, only blackness. Blackness and the lantern, and a splash of residual light from the town behind them. "Do you remember where you ran into the creatures, Tohru?" Kasen asked softly. The younger boy gave a tiny, stiff nod and led the way. "Tohru... Your magic can create light too. Why don't you give it a try?" The Gaili prodded gently. "It may help us find Tennor faster..."

Normally, Tohru would refuse. Just the way his wildly uncontrollable powers felt swimming around in his belly was enough to make him wish he was utterly powerless. But for Tennor... It was his fault the little Fae was gone. He should do everything in his ability to see that he was returned home. So he nodded again and let his hand slip from his brother's grasp. He let himself touch the magical pool within himself, something he usually steered clear of and pulled a tiny bit of its powers to himself. He cupped his hands in front of his body, and a small, glowing, sparking orb appeared in his hands. It was no stronger than the lantern, but it did offer some additional light. "Tennor!" Tohru called out, as loud as his meek voice would allow.

He called a few more times, and they walked quite a bit more distance. Just when the Kiandri was starting to give up, he heard a familiar chattering, accompanied by a rustling. "Tennor?!" He called again, shining his light in that direction. Everything went quiet.

Tohru couldn't see him, but he knew he'd heard the little Fae! It had sounded like he was flopping about on the ground... Maybe he was hurt and couldn't fly? Had the dunkels hurt him?! But at least he was alive. At this point, Tohru didn't dare ask for more than that. "Where are you?" He whispered to the wind. A noise behind him made him glance back, but it was only Kasen shuffling closer with his lantern.

Tohru decided it may be best to divert from Kasen, just for a moment. Tennor didn't like the older brother very much, for reasons completely unknown to Tohru. So, he stepped very silently and carefully away from the older man, whispering quiet pleas for Tennor to come back to him. The rustling and flopping sound began again and Tohru twisted his lightning orb this way and that, desperately searching for the source. But all he saw were piles of rocks. Tennor was around, he wouldn't give up! The little Kiandri started his solo scavenging escapades by peeking around pile after pile, being careful to let his glowing lightning magic touch every crevice with its light before he moved on.

The rustling drew nearer and louder. And Tennor's chirps and trills atarted to sound like angry growls. Finally, Tohru looked behind a pile and saw... Tennor! Wrapped tightly around his pack from earlier! And the little Fae was facing off against five dunkels, all perched on the ground before him. The group was clearly having some sort of stalemate, the way the whole lot bristled and growled at each other. When a dunkel would hop near, Tennor violently lashed out at it, beating his wings and repeatedly smacking the dunkel's head until it retreated back to the group. The whole sight would've been funny, if Tohru wasn't mortified.

Tohru should've known to say nothing and stay out of the way. Tennor seemed capable of handling the mess, even if it was uncomfortable. But there were five... If they all charged him at once, he'd be through. "Let them have it..." Tohru whispered softly to the Fae. "Just give them the berries and come back..." He pleaded. All six pairs of eyes turned to him, and the Kiandri froze. The dunkels tipped their heads. Slowly, they lost interest in Tennor and hoped toward Tohru, dark eyes shining from his orb. A fearful shiver ran down the Kiandri's spine. The dunkels fanned their wings, and Tohru's eyes widened. "Let's go Tennor!" He shouted, pausing a moment too long to make sure his companion was with him this time.

But the dunkels were on him for real now, unlike last time. He could feel them tug at his hair and clothes, and their teeth scraped him occasionally, despite how he bated to keep them away. But Tennor landed on his perch, and Tohru knew he just had to make it to Kasen! He flung his sparky orb out at them. the dunkels dove after it, and when they touched it, it popped, sending a shocking wave across them, while Tohru fled, desperately calling out Kasen's name.

The older Gaili met him quickly and scooped him up, already spotting the scaly Fae atop his brothers head. "Run into some trouble?" Kasen murmured as Tohru flung his arms about his brother's neck and nodded. The man shined his lantern in the direction from which Tohru had come, but... nothing seemed to be after him. "Well, as long as you found Tennor, let's head home." Tohru refused to be set down for the duration of the trip.
