The first day of the semester always dragged on forever, no matter what school you went to. Still, this was Sova's first time taking a class offered at DCU, so at least the scenery was new.

She walked into the class after double-checking the room number and took a seat two rows back. Close enough to take good notes, but far enough away to avoid frequent eye contact with the teacher. It was an art to choose the right seat, really. She spared a glance at the generic literary posters. Every English teacher in the world had the same posters, it seemed.

It was only minutes before she was bored enough to be doodling poorly drawn owls into the corners of her syllabus, pausing only long enough to underline important rules and dates.

Talia was already sitting in her seat and she'd been sitting in the seat for nearly 15 minutes now. She was never on time to things- she was always early. If the idea of being on time was abysmal, the idea of being late was repulsive.

She didn't say anything to the girl who had sat next to her, seeing as there was no need to. She looked sort of familiar, but it was nothing remarkable. Talia's eyes had already left her, scanning the room to see what other oddballs had joined this particular class. It was a general education class, so there were bound to be some interesting specimens.

Finally the professor hushed everyone and began by going over the syllabus. Talia really did try to pay attention, but it was hard when she couldn't care less about the art of critical thinking. Eventually it came time for everyone to play an icebreaker. The idea was just to get people talking. Things like why they joined the class and what not. You had to interview the person next to you and then write on a notecard the things you learned. At the end of class you'd turn it in for participation points. A really stupid exercise that would be forgotten in a few weeks, but it was the assignment so she was going to do it.

Considering the person to her left was asleep, she turned to the brunette to her right and said, "Ah ... hi my name is Talia! What's yours?" That was a good enough start.

Sova tried not to look panicked when the professor announced an icebreaker. It wasn't that she didn't want to socialize or that she could, just that it was always awkward.

She watched as the person on her right immediately turned to the person on her other side and plucked at the pages of her syllabus nervously. When she turned to her left, though, the girl was turned towards her. "Oh! I'm Sova. Nice to meet you?" She said uncertainly. "I don't really like these icebreaker things."

"That's okay," Talia replied soothingly. "They're stupid anyways. But a grade is a grade, right?"

She tapped her chin and then scribbled Sova's name down on her little notecard. "Let's see ..." Interview questions? Those were so boring- she didn't care about this girl's goals and dreams! She was just trying to pass this class!

Talia looked up and said, "Well ... if you were an animal, what kind of animal would you be?" That seemed like a good open question. Easy to start conversation. She could do this.

She nodded agreeably. Do it for the grade. It was a good motto.

Sova laughed quietly at the question, trying not to look like she was crazy, but too amused by the irony to keep it to herself. There was no way this girl could understand how great her question really was. "Uh, I think I'd have to say owl. They just really represent my life right now. What about you?"

"Mmmm ... something cute. I guess maybe a cat?" Cats were cute and agile- she liked them well enough. Talia wasn't exactly coy or interesting about it- animals weren't really her things. She liked them as pets, but beyond that she didn't know much.

Of course, Talia could have said "serpent" meaning dragon, but snakes weren't cute at all- they were terrifying. That, and dragons weren't real animals- not on this planet anyways. Then again, she had no confirmation that her home planet existed at all-

She shook her head, realizing she was living in the world of senshi again. "Um ... why don't you ask a question this time?"

Sova scribbled that answer down next to Talia's name and smiled. She hummed and tapped her pencil against her lips. What was a good interview question? Favorite color seemed kind of lame. "Uh, what's your major?" She said instead. Which wasn't much better, but they were in a gen ed class so it wasn't like she could just make an assumption about it.

"Uhh ... engineering," Talia said curtly, scanning the rest of the classroom for literally anyone else she knew. Not that Sova wasn't interesting, but it would make the conversation a thousand times less awkward if she had somebody she knew.

No dice. At least Sova wasn't unbearable. "And you? By the muddy hiking boots I'd guess an environmental major?" Yes, Talia had noticed and yes, she was holding back remarks on them.

Oh wow. Engineering was tough. It didn't escape her notice that Talia was looking around the room instead of focusing on the task, but she didn't let it get to her. If she could escape this she would.

She looked down at her boots guiltily when they were brought up. They were kind of muddy. "It's hard to get the dirt out once it's there. You caught me, though. I was astronomy but I recently switched to environmental."

Talia nodded. "I'm not big on the outdoors," she commented. Actually, Talia hated the outdoors. She literally cried if a leaf fell too close to her. "But cool on you for following your dreams."

Really, she couldn't care less about this girl. She scribbled the minute information onto the card, right beside the girl's name in her neat, bubbly handwriting.

"Hmmm, my turn, my turn~" she cooed, picking at her nails. "What kind of things do you like to do like- you know, outside of class?" It wasn't a very creative question, but it was indeed a question.

Sova shrugged easily. Wasn't her place to judge if someone else didn't like the outdoors.

"Obviously I do a lot of hiking. I usually take a lot of easier paths just so I can focus on my surroundings more than the hike, but I've done some pretty intense trails before too. Other than that I usually spend my time reading.Or job hunting, that's been a thing lately." She cringed. "What about you?"

Talia grimaced at the idea of hiking for fun. Why would anyone do that to themselves? There was all the dirt and mud, you were covered in sweat and then there was NATURE everywhere. Gross.

"Um. I dunno. I hang out with my friends or watch tv or something," she said, rolling her hands. "Oh, lately I've tried to learn to play the guitar. That counts as a hobby right?" In truth, Talia was terrible at the guitar and she was most likely going to quit in a month or two due to boredom or difficulty. But for now she was having fun bragging to people about playing the guitar.

The professor announced to the class that he would give them about five more minutes- about enough time for one question, she supposed. "Ummm what's your favorite food? Like if you had to eat it for the rest of forever."

"Oh! Yeah that's totally a hobby. That's cool. I don't play any instruments." She scribbled that down and noticed her note card at least didn't look pathetically blank anymore. Yay, she was going to get a grade.

"Uhh, any kind of beef I guess. I really like steak tips but if it moo'd once I'll probably eat it." She gave a cheshire grin and shrugged.

Talia wasn't too fond of Sova's glib way of speaking, but only said, "Mmmm yeah. That sounds amaaazing." If there was one thing Talia was good at, it was pretending to care about things without actually caring a lick.

The professor finally called the attention of the classroom, and requested that they pass their cards to the end of the aisle, towards the bottom and to the right. Talia sat back in her chair, facing more forward than she had been before.

"It was really nice to meet you Sova~" she commented with a smile before opening her notebook, ready to attend the class.

Sova waved slightly in lieu of saying anything and turned her attention back to the professor and relaxing back into her seat.

Hopefully that was the last time she had to do something like that today.
