Sunshine and Moonbeam sat outside at one of the tables, enjoying their coffee together. Sunshine liked hers hot while Moonbeam preferred hers iced, but otherwise they had similar tastes. The twin unicorns were obviously not identical, but it was hard to say if one's beauty surpassed the other. Their looks were just as different as their personalities, though, and Moonbeam smiled silently as her sister informed her about the cutest stallions she'd seen out and about Canterlot lately.

"How about you, Moonie? Met any interesting guys at any night clubs or anything?" Sunshine asked her silver sister.

"I haven't been out, really," Moonbeam confessed, her soft smile faltering as she took another sip of her drink. Her gaze seemed distant. "Haven't really been in the mood since Starlight left us. Poor thing...I wonder how she's doing."

"Twinkle Toes? Oh, she'll be fine," the gold unicorn answered promptly, waving a cloven hoof in dismissal. "We couldn't stand each other. Personally, I think it's better for all of us that she's out. Her attitude was horrid and she has a lot of growing up to do."

"Perhaps she's not the only one, Sunny," Moonbeam answered with her gentle smile. "Perhaps we shouldn't have been so harsh on her. Set a better example, you know?"

"Don't worry so much," Sunshine insisted. "The only one you should worry about is you. Enjoy your life. Live in the moment! The only one who can do that is you. It's not like we could help Twinks even if we wanted."

"Yes...I suppose that's true," the long-maned unicorn agreed with a small sigh. "Poor thing...she must be so lonely. I hope she finds what she's looking for and comes home soon."

"Right. But in the meantime, don't forget to have fun yourself," Sunshine reminded her.

Double Trouble

A new day was starting with the sun barely in the horizon and the elegant streets of Canterlot bursting with activity, colors and sounds.
Fillies, colts, mares, stallions, ponies of all kinds walking and running on the pavement roads, heading to their destinations with the energy and determination to face the new day, however... not everypony possessed the same enthusiasm that morning...

A blue female unicorn with a light blue mane wearing a blue cape and a cravat was sitting on a fancy purple cushion. She was rocking in place, with an exhausted expression and struggling to keep her eyes open. The moment she lost her internal little fight and closed her eyes succumbing to sleep was the moment a cup on a plate was placed on her table, instantly waking her up, "Uh?". "Your coffee, madame", said one of the many mustached waiters before walking back inside the restaurant. Double Trouble, as she was called, looked at the small cup in front of her. What was an ordinary astrologer like her doing in a magnificent and expensive place like Canterlot? The answer was simple... unfortunately, she couldn't remember it in her current state, she couldn't even recall what she was doing last night that was so important that she didn't have the time to get some sleep.

The blue unicorn let out a sigh of relief as she looked at the dark liquid inside the cup, soon her struggle against sleep will come to a halt... at least for a few hours. There was one small problem though... she hated coffee, she abhorred its deep and bitter taste, but she had to make the effort and drink it if she wanted to stay awake until noon, let alone tonight. One, two, three, four, five, six... six spoons of sugar were dropped into the cup to camouflage the bitter taste of her coffee. Her horn glowed in a blue light and a blue aura formed around the white cup, it levitated from its place and toward the lips of the blue unicorn. Closing her eyes in anticipation, it was just a matter of taking the first sip, after that... the day would become a lot easier to overcome. Things were about to go from bad to good... right?

User ImageA high-pitched giggle came from a table nearby as Sunshine spied the blue unicorn nodding off. "Oh my...looks like someone seems a bit sleepy."

Moonbeam turned her head to follow her sister's gaze, but instead of amusement, her expression morphed into one of concern. "You poor dear. Are you alright?"

"Perhaps you'd like to join us," Sunshine offered. "The more company, the greater the conversation and the more reason to stay awake, right?"

"It's always nice to share a hot drink with others," Moonbeam agreed. "Would you care to share your story with us? What has you so deliriously drowsy?"

Double Trouble

Just as she was about to take the first sip, Double Trouble was interrupted by two voices. Surprised, she turned her head and looked at the two unicorns who were talking to her. It was unusual... Canterlot was THE place in Equestria where the elite usually lived, signs of true honesty and generosity were... rather uncommon in that place. In any case, turning down the offer would've been a rude gesture on her part, she didn't have a choice.

"Umhhh... I suppose..." she slowly walked away from her place, taking her cup of coffee and the cushion she was seated on and placing it next to the opposite side of the table from where the other two unicorns were. She sat and coughed softly, covering her mouth, before taking a good and long look at the duo, first thing she noticed about them were their peculiarly elegant features, which differed from normal unicorns. "My story? My story... my story...", she kept repeating the same words, attempting to recall what happened last night, but the memories just didn't want to return. It was rather weird because she could perfectly remember everything before that night. She shook her head abruptly, "I was, umhhh... working on something... or looking at the night sky... maybe?" she said the last word almost in a whisper as she looked down and poured a seventh spoon of sugar into her coffee.

"Mhhhh...", Double Trouble placed her heterochromic eyes at the golden unicorn, and then at the silver one. She continued looking back at forth between the two mares until realization hit her, they were so close in looks it was obvious, "You two... you're both Gemini, right? I'm right, right?" she asked gleefully while looking at the two of them, awaiting for an answer.

"Don't be shy," the gold unicorn said cheerfully. "I'm Sunshine and this is my sister, Moonbeam. If we make you uncomfortable for any reason at all, you can let us know. We don't bite," she assured the blue stranger, regarding her garments. "Nice outfit, by the way."

Moving to make room for the newcomer, Moon shifted closer to Sunshine, allowing her to get a better view of their guest. She dipped her head politely as she was introduced and cast a gentle smile. "You don't have to tell us if you don't want to," she added, making note of the other unicorn's hesitation. "Sunshine tends to be rather open and outgoing, so she sometimes forgets that not all other ponies are the same way. Feel free to relax and drink if you prefer not to speak."

"Kind of ironic that they say 'speech is silver and silence is golden', isn't it, Moonie?" Sun laughed. "Moonshine's pretty quiet herself, most of the time. At least compared to me. Working on something, you say? You don't sound sure." The golden gaze of her twinkle eyes glinted with mischief as she leaned forward and lowered her voice conspiratorially. "Are you certain you weren't...um...intoxicated at the time, honey? Perhaps you were at a night club or a bar before going out for some fresh air?"

"Sunny," Moonbeam spoke softly in warning, her voice gentle but firm. "It's not polite to make such accusations; particularly of someone we just met." She looked to the blue unicorn, about to ask her name before she was intercepted by a question from her intended addressee. "'Gemini'...?" she repeated, sounding perplexed. "I'm sorry, I don't..."

"She means our horoscope signs, dear," Sun informed her sister. Beaming radiantly at the heterochromic unicorn, she chuckled lightly, the other's change in demeanor and mood not having escaped her notice. "Unfortunately, we're not really sure about our birth dates - our mother isn't very clear with us about much - but I'm almost positive you're right. It would make sense, wouldn't it?" She grinned as she leaned in close to Moonbeam and put a sisterly hoof about her shoulders. "We are twin sisters, after all. And what about you, sweet? My guess is, with how your face lit up, you enjoy looking into horoscope signs."

Double Trouble

"Umhhh... thanks", she replied shyly to Sunshine's compliment. If it weren't for the fact she was in front of two mares she just met, she would've smirked in a triumphant way. Of course it was a nice outfit, after all, who doesn't look good wearing that kind of clothes? Truth is, Double had a really poor sense of fashion, and the only reason she wore those garments was because she thought a cravat and a cape could make anypony look like a professional.

The next one who talked was Moonbeam. Double felt a bit bad about her comment, it wasn't that the didn't want to tell, she just couldn't remember.
She tilted her head and scratched it... "Uh, is that a bump on my head?". Her thought got interrupted by Sunshine. The blue unicorn closed her eyes and used her magic to levitate the cup of coffee to her lips, thinking about what to reply. Her sip got suddenly interrupted when Sunshine asked if she was intoxicated the night before. Double's eyes opened abruptly and her pupils shrunk in a second, "W-w-What!? N-no! I would never..." she exclaimed, her astonished gaze meting with Sunshine's mischievous one, immediately putting the cup back in its place. It's true that she looked like a mess and couldn't remember last night events... but she was sure she didn't drink any kind of harmful substance or went to any night club, she wasn't the party kind of pony.

She took the chance to regain her composure while Moonbeam was talking to Sunshine. Observing the twins, she found the interactions between the two rather charming, and that was when she came to the conclusion they were both Gemini.

After enthusiastically asking the question about their zodiacal sign to the duo in a gleefully way, Double's grin vanished and her eyes widened the moment Sunshine made that last question, "W-what about me? I don't have any twin sister... unfortunately, no, no..." she replied, glancing sideways from the twins.

After a few moments, she looked back at her cup of coffee, "Why would a mother not tell her children their birth dates? Or perhaps they just don't want to tell me?" Double thought as another spoon of sugar was poured on her coffee.

"Oh, I didn't introduce myself, did I? My name is...", she looked away and let out a small sigh, "... Double Trouble," she said in a low tone before adjusting her cravat and looking back at them, "Ahem! I'm an astrologer and a mage apprentice... well, former apprentice to be more precise...", she lowered her head and ears for a few seconds. Double cleared her throat and regained her composure in an instant, "... and yes, just as you said, miss Sunshine, I enjoy looking into that sort of things, after all... I believe we're all connected to the stars in the endless sky one way or another." she said with and enthusiastic smile to the twins.

"What about you two, miss Sunshine and miss Moonbeam? What are your professions?" The blue mare assumed their talents might be related to fashion or of the sorts, judging them by their looks and manner of speech.

PostPosted: Mon Mar 31, 2014 9:25 pm

Sunshine blinked a moment in confusion before laughing lightly. "Actually, dear, I meant your horoscope sign," the mare clarified. "but don't worry. Sisters aren't always all they're cracked up to be. Moonie here and I get along fine, thank goodness, but we have another sister who's just so difficult!"

"She isn't all that bad," Moon defended gently. "Just younger and probably more insecure." The silver unicorn watched the blue one closely, however. Her startled reaction hadn't escaped Moon's notice. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Double Trouble," she answered with a polite smile. "How ironic to have such a name and yet no twin sister." Her silver twinkle eyes glinted meaningfully at the sugar-loving mare. If Double didn't want to talk about it, though, she wouldn't press her to. Everypony had their own secrets and their own reasons for keeping them, after all.

"You certainly seem to like your sugar, don't you?" the gold sister mused aloud. "Double Trouble...what a fun name! You sound like a unicorn of many talents and achievements, Double." Still beaming warmly, she rested her elbows on the table top and rested her chin atop her hooves. "Please, call me Sun or Sunny! No need to be so formal." Though her grin remained fixed, Sunshine's eye seemed to twitch as the blue unicorn mentioned being connected to the stars.

"Oh dear...I'm so sorry to hear that," Moonbeam said, her voice saturated with genuine sympathy. "About your apprenticeship's end, I mean. Would you care to talk about it, or would that be a sore subject?"

"Now, Moonie, let's not dwell on the past," Sun cut in. "Especially not unpleasant pasts. It's the here and now that's important!" Seeming to cheer up, the gold unicorn's ringlets bounced as she looked gleefully to the sun-lit sky. "Moonbeam and I work with light. Moonlight and sunlight, respectively," she explained. "We craft them into different things with our magic, like cloth for radiant sundresses or glamorous evening gowns. But we also use it for more obvious things like festive lanterns, magic lamp lights, and protective night lights. We store light for energy like with solar power, help plants with photosynthesis...that sort of thing. The sky's the limit, really."

"We work with a wide variety of other talented ponies," Moonbeam agreed, "But for our part, our main job is to provide them with the resource of captured light. We don't have as much a role in the creation of the dresses, lamps, and other things as it might seem. Sunshine just really loves all the works that are created from the light that we manipulate." She inclined her head gently toward Double. "I think you would like our younger sister. She worked with the light of the stars. I'm sure she'd be flattered by your philosophy regarding our connection to them."

Double Trouble

Double Trouble's ears pricked as she stared blankly at Sunshine, "Oh..." was the only thing she managed to say, feeling silly for misinterpreting the gold colored unicorn's question regarding her zodiacal sign. Before she could reply, the subject was changed. She pouted in a thinking manner as she used her unicorn magic to put the fourteenth spoon of sugar in her coffee and stirred it silently, not moving her sight from the twins and listening to their chat about another sister. She thought about this other unicorn... being the youngest of a trio of siblings must be hard.

"The pleasure is mine", Double replied, mimicking Moonbeam's head gesture. "Oh! Well... you know how funny fate can be sometimes...", she replied to Moonbeam's comment about the irony of her name, letting out a nervous laugh, and glancing sideways. "kind of... like you just told me about speech and silence, he, he, he..."

"Uh? Oh, yes, I like to put a bit of a sug-", she stopped when she set her eyes on her cup, to which she didn't pay any attention ever since she got on the twin's table. She jerked her head back in shock the moment she saw a small mountain of sugar on the black liquid. Her coffee ruined, she frowned at the sugar catastrophe for a few seconds before looking back at Sunshine The blue unicorn cleared her throat and adjusted her cravat... again, pretending that nothing happened.

"Oh, yes, it is a funny name... he, he..." she said, letting out a silent and awkward laugh. She didn't show it but she felt honored, she didn't even consider the possibility that the comment might have been sarcastic. "You names are suiting, too. You two really are like the radiant sun and the shining moon... so similar, yet so different at the same time", she said with a smile.

After hearing Moonbeam asking about her apprenticeship's end, the blue unicorn lowered her ears and whispered "Umhhh... well, I supp-", but she stopped when Sunshine spoke. Not worrying about the past... maybe that was for the best.
Pickering her ears in curiosity, she listened carefully to Sunshine's explanation. Double Trouble followed Sunshine's gaze, it was a truly beautiful morning sky. "Transforming sunlight and moonlight into energy for versatile uses... that's amazing". The blue unicorn pressed her right hoof on her cheek, in a thinking manner, "Mhhh... turning moonlight into an useful material... I once met an unicorn who could do that...", she said, absent minded. She shook her head, snapping out of her thought.

Double turned her head to the left, then to the right, and then finally to Moonbeam "And... where is your sister?", she asked, flattening her ears.

User Image"Yikes! Looks like we got a bit carried away there, didn't we?" Sunshine chuckled as she followed Double Trouble's gaze to the small mountain of sugar. "At least you seem more awake now, though. Would you like us to order you another?"

"Double...might you be a Gemini as well?" Moonbeam asked, daintily sipping from her cup. "I just thought it fit your name if nothing else."

"Thank you," Sun replied in response to the compliment regarding their own names. "A little too suiting, perhaps. That's sweet of you to say, but sometimes I feel they're a bit unimaginative considering the literal relation to our magic and special talents. Still, at least they all fit a theme, I suppose."

Moon glanced at her outspoken sister, wondering if the gold unicorn was discouraging their acquaintance from sharing more about herself with her frequent interruptions. She didn't want Double to feel pressured into having to talk, but she didn't want her to feel intimidated into silence, either.

Catching her sister's meaningful look, Sun cleared her throat, somewhat embarrassed with herself. "Oh, it's not all that great. Like Moonie said, sometimes I just get a little carried away. So what unicorn was this you met, Double? If you feel like sharing, of course." Her bright expression darkened momentarily at the subject of their younger sister, but she brushed aside the topic with a nervous laugh and a dismissive gesture of her hoof. "Who knows? Likely some forest by herself. She always seemed to fancy that 'lonely hermit' lifestyle. Anyway, Double, tell us more about yourself! We've been talking so much about ourselves and we've hardly learned anything about you!"

Double Trouble

Double desperately shook her head continuously and waved her hooves in a negative gesture as a response to Sunshine's offer, "Oh, no, no, no, there's no need... I like it this way, really. Uhh, thanks!", she replied with an awkward and forced grin, not wanting to cause any trouble to the twins. The blue Unicorn did feel bad about her loss, a single cup of coffee in Canterlot cost five times more than any other place in Equestria. While it was true that she was less tired now, it wouldn't last long without the caffeine flowing through her body.

Her demeanor changing into one of confidence and excitement as soon as Moonbeam retook the topic of zodiacal signs. "That is correct. I was born under the stars of Castor and Pollux. I'm a Geminian, just like yo-, errr... I mean, just like what you think you are... sorry." What was enthusiasm soon turned into regret, she lowered her ears and looked down at her cup.

"Oh, I think he called himself a nocturnal. He could turn moonlight into moon dew... but now that I think about it, it's quite different from what you do, Miss Moonbeam." Even though Sunshine had told Double to drop the formalities, her sister never did, so the blue unicorn felt obliged to threat the silver mare with respect, regardless is she was younger or not. "From what you told me, you turn the moonlight into energy, while this nocturnal could turn in into a liquid state" she explained enthusiastically, "Quite fascinating... oh, I'm digressing, am I? In any case, he helped me a lot, I'll never forget him...", she raised her head, looking at the sky, "... Knife Hook... ... ... ... ... no, wait..."

The conversation went on, Double Trouble really wanted to hear about The Twin's younger sister, the idea of turning the light of the stars gracing the sky into energy picked her curiosity, but it seemed that wouldn't be the case, judging by what seemed to be a subtle coldness in Sunlight's last response in regards to the missing sister.

"About me? Umhhh...", Double Trouble averted her gaze from the twins and began spinning her sugar-filled cup between her hooves. "I'm... just a simple astrologer...", she let out a nervous and awkward giggle as she said this. "Just an ordinary mare like everypony else..."

User Image"You like...having coffee with your sugar?" Sun asked with a small, incredulous smile, implying that there was far more of the latter than the former. "Are you sure? It really wouldn't be any trouble. I was just about to order a scone, anyway." She waved a waiter over and requested her scone, a tray of cookies for them to share, and a cup of sweetened coffee for Double. If she had any concern for the price of the food, she didn't seem to show it, but perhaps she hadn't an idea of what such things costed outside of Canterlot.

"Castor and Pollux...what a sad story," Moon murmured in melancholy tones. "No need to be sorry, dear Double. Why the sudden change in demeanor?" She tilted her head, puzzled at the idea that the other unicorn would have seemed so upset at her slight error, if it could even be called one. Perhaps she was upset about something deeper than what it seemed on the surface. Yet, once again, she chose not to pry and instead moved on to the next topic.

"Noctournal? And moon dew? How extraordinary," the silver mare remarked. "It does seem different, as you said, but it sounds as though he still does manipulate the same resource of moonlight. I think I'd really like to meet and ask him about this talent of his sometime. Thank you for telling me."

She smiled again when she noticed the full use of her name accompanied by a title. "Do you prefer the formal address that other Canterlot nobles use, Miss Double?" She would have liked to think they could be close enough friends not to need them, but there was always the chance that being so informal might have made the blue unicorn uncomfortable. And while Sun and Moon didn't mind nicknames, she thought perhaps Double might have preferred being referred to in a more respectful manner.

Unable to help herself, Sunshine laughed as Double Trouble tried to recall the name of the nocturnal unicorn. "Perhaps his name is easier to forget than he himself," she teased. "But if you do remember it, you'll tell us, won't you? I'm kind of curious to meet him myself." She resumed beaming warmly at Double. "Yes, about you! You're just being humble. Come on, there has to be more to you than that," Sunshine insisted. "Like why is it your talent seems to be related to stars and astrology, but your name is 'Double Trouble'?"

"Still waters run deep," Moonbeam recited. "Perhaps she does not wish to share her personal matters or private information with us, sister. Let's not pester her too much about it, hm?" She watched the other unicorn over the top of her cup as she sipped, observing Double fiddling with her own.

Sunshine looked put-out, uttering a small sigh, but relented. "I suppose you're right. We've only just met, anyway; plenty of time to learn more about each other in the future. Oh, the cookies are here! And your coffee, Dub. Mind if I call you Dub?" she asked with a giggle. "It reminds me of that type of new music...'dub-step', I think it's called..."

Double Trouble

Sunshine made her request to the waiter before the blue unicorn could protest. While she found the gesture generous, she still felt a bit uncomfortable.

Almost everypony Double met didn't even know who Castor and Pollux were, it surprised her than Moonbeam did... but what else could be expected from the refined residents of Canterlot?
Why did she apologize? For a few seconds, she struggled thinking of the right words, but fortunately, like a sign of mercy, the silver colored unicorn left the topic behind.

Double Trouble raised her head pridefully with a silly confident look when she was called "Miss Double" by Moon. It was just as she was told when she was a small filly... threat others with respect and they will respect you back. She liked how professional "Miss" sounded... too bad the same couldn't be said about her name. However, that small ego deflated like a balloon when Sunshine called her "Dub". A faint blush tainting her blue cheeks, for some reason she couldn't understand, perhaps it reminded her of that music so popular with teens nowadays, too? No one ever gave her a nickname like that. In any case, it sounded better than her full name. Double cleared her throat before smiling at both of them, "You can call me however you like. I'm fine with those names, Miss Moonbeam and Miss Su-, errr... "Sun". Oh! And thanks for the coffee."

Humble? Maybe she was being a bit too humble. The fact that her name didn't suit her talent was true, but she wasn't the only one, there must've been thousands of ponies across Equestria in the same situation. And just before Double could start explaining the reason of her name, she was eclipsed by Moonbeam's words. She lowered her head and silently looked at her two cups on coffee, one of them full of sugar, feeling glad she didn't have to come up with a rushed explanation about her silly name.

Regarding the Nocturnal's name... she would've told them his name if she could remember it. In less that 10 minutes, Sunshine already spoke thrice the amount of words than the Nocturnal did in half a day. Double pictured how an encounter between the two would be... Sunshine would be talking endlessly to him while the Nocturnal would suddenly burst into tears and start reciting his life story... okay, maybe she was exaggerating her thought... but it was then that she remembered something else. She recalled the nocturnal saying he was having some kind of conflict with his brother. She also recalled Sunshine's attitude when talking about the "missing sister".

While it was true that the myth of the Dioskouri was a tragic one, as Moonbeam said, it also was a touching tale that highlighted the sacrifice made by Pollux out of love and loyalty for his brother. Being a child of Gemini, Double Trouble found quarrels between brothers and sisters really depressing. Why should ponies sharing the same blood fight each other?

She took the chance to talk before being bombarded by another barrage of questions from the, as she decided to call them, "Celestial Duo". She knew very well it was none of her business, but still...

"Umhhh... about this other sister of yours", she said with a worried expression to the two unicorns in front of her, "do you still keep in contact with her?"

Wasibru
PostPosted: Sun Apr 06, 2014 4:53 pm

"In that case, Miss Double, please feel free to call us whatever you like. We don't really mind; Sunshine simply assumed it would have been more convenient for you to call us by shorter names. I can understand if using such an informal address makes you uncomfortable, though. We only just met, after all." She looked once more to her sister with a meaningful expression.

User Image"Oh, that's right. If it's not any easier for you, don't worry about the nicknames. I just thought 'Dub' or 'DT' might be faster than 'Double Trouble', but if that's what you want, I don't mind it, either. You've just got to let us know, dear," She said with a slightly sheepish smile.

She knew Moonbeam was often more observant and considerate than she remembered to be and was grateful Moon had brought such a thing to her attention. "As for the coffee, you're absolutely welcome!" She reached out a hoof to bring her own cup of coffee to her lips. At the mention of her third sister, however, she promptly drenched herself in the hot liquid as she spilt, sputtered, coughed, and choked on it.

Moonbeam reached over with her napkin to help mop up the mess. She and Sunshine exchanged looks as they wordlessly wiped the coffee from the table, chair, and Sunshine herself. A waiter pitched in to help, but it wasn't until the mess was clean and the waiter was gone that Moon responded to Double's question.

Sunshine was looking up at the sky again, albeit with a vacant expression and no smile this time.

"Well...she only left us just a couple of weeks ago," Moonbeam explained softly, meeting the blue unicorn's gaze. "She decided she couldn't stand living at home with us anymore, being treated as the filly of the family, so she struck out on her own." She stared down at her nearly-empty coffee cup. "We haven't heard from her since and we're not entirely sure where she's gone because she didn't tell us. She's a prideful thing and probably didn't want us following her...but I found out the train she took when she left here was headed toward Foal Mountain."

The silver unicorn mare smiled gently at Double. "I'm not sure she'd be pleased to know I even have that information, but she is our sister, and despite what she might think, we do care about her."

The gold mare's tail flicked just then, but other than that, she gave no indication that she was paying attention at all to the conversation. Instead, she still appeared to be studying the shape of the clouds in the sky...or perhaps the intensity of the sun's rays. It was difficult to tell.

"...If you would like to meet her, I think I could probably point you in the direction to find her," Moon continued, watching Sun out the corner of her eye. "I don't think she would have any reason to feel as contemptuous or bitter towards you as she seems to feel toward us, so perhaps you'd have better luck."
