User ImageYes. It was settled. Now all he had to do was make the plans. And with that in mind, the arctova had swum out to the kelp beds he knew his friend loved so much. It had been a very long time since he'd last seen Eelico, but he felt the strong need to see Eelico again. Not just for the stories, either--when they'd first met, they'd been delighted. Eelico had been excited to meet someone who wanted to hear stories, and Ozean was delighted to see another star who didn't want to attack him. They'd stuck together for a few days until the wanderlust had started up again and they'd both felt the need to go on. Wandering was a terrible vice to have for a star who craved social contact. It had ever been Ozean's curse. But he'd come up with a solution for it. But the solution required a little...how should he say it...assistance from an old friend. Hopefully, Eelico would be interested in it. It was hard to say what the black stallion would be interested in, though. Eelico's emotions were unpredictable. He was a private person who didn't believe in giving away any hint of his own personal preferences or beliefs.

To get his help, he'd have to pitch it in just the right way. He was confident, however, that Eelico would be interested. He had a pretty good idea of how to pitch it. Now the question was, how could he find the errant alcor? He did like kelp, and there had been a storm here recently. Eelico loved storms. Very passionately he loved them. This seemed like the perfect place, especially here on the sandy bottom just outside the kelp forest. Here angel sharks dwelled, buried under sand and waiting for prey. And where sharks could be found, so could be found--yes. There she was. Grey and red, with a bone-mask, there was Mosirra, Ozean's shadow. The mare was massive and covered with scars from a hundred battles. She was the toughest star Ozean had ever met, and she was Eelico's loyal bodyguard. No matter where the black stallion went, Mosirra was his granitic shadow, keeping him out of harm's way and laying about with her massive tail fin. Where Mosirra could be found, so too could the alcor.

Ozean waited a short ways away as Mosirra struck at the ground. No luck. Sand was kicked up, but the shark was able to scurry away at the last second. Mosirra's body was tense with disappointment when Ozean called out to her. "Mosirra! Ocean-prowler! How dost thou fare?"

User ImageDamn and spit! The shark got away. Mosirra wasn't carnivorous--she was more of an omnivore than anything else. She rather liked the acrid taste of shark, and loved chasing them around. Not like dolphins--nasty, evil creatures, dolphins. She hunted to eat sharks; she hunted dolphins to get them out of the way. They were competitive, cruel, they got in the way...well, there were a lot of reasons she hated dolphins. It was not a subject to bring up with Eelico, though. Eelico wasn't fond of sharks, but he considered dolphins to be quite close to stars. They just had to politely disagree with that, Mosirra had decided. It didn't do to argue with her ward over something entirely inconsequential.

In the aftermath of the failed strike, she heard a familiar voice behind her. Mosirra grunted and turned her head. There, swimming behind her, was none other than Ozean. She vaguely remembered the star--they'd met not long after they Fell, and he and Eelico had had an animated conversation about anything and everything. To be honest, Mosirra had mostly dropped off in that conversation. It wasn't much to interest her, really. Just stories she'd heard a thousand times before and a stallion complaining of his loneliness. But Mosirra still remembered the arctova nonetheless. Eelico still mused occasionally on what had happened to the other star. It had been some years since last they had met, though, and the drake was bemused to see him here.

She'd forgotten things about him--the colors of his eyes, the way his tail was almost entirely white. Oh yeah, and the fact that he insisted on addressing her in what he no doubt thought of as formal speech. Mosirra had once thought of it that way, too--until Eelico had told her that it used to be an informal form of address reserved for social lessers. Oh well. Mosirra was not interested in protocol. He meant her respect, even if he had a weird way of showing it (seriously, who talked formally to a bodyguard, anyway? Even one like her?). For that, Mosirra had to respect him. She swam over to the stallion and grunted, nodding her head in respect. She could not speak--did he not remember that?

Ah...yes...of course...he'd forgotten. Ozean dipped his head to her. Why Mosirra couldn't speak he had no idea. She was a very strange star, one he'd never quite figured out. According to Eelico, she was his bodyguard because they had some sort of deep connection to each other. It was something spiritual for the both of them, one that Ozean had given up understanding. The important thing was, Mosirra and Eelico traveled together, and he kind of hoped that would work for his idea. It proved, if nothing else, that both Mosirra and Eelico were open to the idea of traveling the ocean with another person, even if it was only each other.

Maybe if they let me travel with them, they'll explain to me. He had to admit, he was very curious to find out more about them--what Mosirra was (no ordinary star), why she acted the way she did, where she came from...heck, where Eelico came from would be an interesting story as well. He could talk at great length about all sorts of things, but he was oddly shy on his own (and his companion's) backstory. Maybe they didn't trust him...maybe they just didn't remember. It was hard to say, and many stars forgot their past when they Fell.

"Ah, yes, sorry. It's good to see you anyway, Mosirra. I know this is a silly question, but is Eelico here? I was hoping to talk to him. It's, uh...been a while since we saw each other. It would be...good to get to talk to someone else. Not that it isn't good to talk to you," he added hastily. "Just...I was hoping to get to talk to Eelico, is all. Do you know where he is?" Could Mosirra at least be less intimidating? Please? For once?

Yes, that was a silly question, but Ozean was such a silly stallion, did it really matter? Hmph. No. Not to Mosirra, anyway. Ozean was just...too silly a stallion to worry too much about. But he made Eelico happy, and when it got right down to it, that was really all that mattered to Mosirra. Eelico was very special to her, and so his happiness was important to her, no matter what.

Mosirra gestured in the direction that Eelico had gone. He was sunbathing on the surface, surrounded by a raft of sea otters. Normally Mosirra didn't go in for cute things, but sea otters were, quite frankly, very cute. Too cute to resist. But she scared them too much to go near them, so mostly Mosirra avoided the sea otters and let Eelico get on with his sunbathing without her. It wasn't like there was anything that could come at him from above that could hurt him, after all. ...Well, some flying stars, alcors or dragons or somesuch, but so far Mosirra hadn't seen any that posed a threat to her, and anyway, she was close enough to protect Eelico should there be a problem, and he could always turn into a cat to defend himself for the amount of time it took Mosirra to come to his aid.

Mosirra watched Ozean squirm with embarrassment. Even if she'd been able to talk, she knew that Ozean would rather talk with her companion than with her. She didn't think she'd be a good conversationalist even if she could talk--she just wasn't social enough to care about conversations. She wasn't offended by Ozean at all.

Ah, there we go! Sweet sanity at last. Ozean threw a quick nod at Mosirra when she gestured in his friend's direction. Waiting around for Eelico while in the presence of someone he couldn't talk to was...very awkward. He didn't like it, not one bit. He felt like he was being rude by not talking to her, then he'd feel rude by talking to her. It was an intolerable position to be in, and not one he could solve at all. He would really much rather go talk to Eelico--if nothing else, Eelico's mysterious connection to Mosirra let him translate for her gestures and her scrutinous looks.

Eelico was, of course, sunbathing on the surface, surrounded by sea otters. Eelico liked fluffy things, which wasn't that surprising, considering he was a fluffy thing (sometimes, anyway). Mind you, most people liked sea otters. They were cute, and playful, and smart. They were pleasant to pass the day with. Ozean rose up through the sunlight towards the surface, heading for the dark shadows on the surface. He popped his head out into the open air and blinked in the bright sunlight. The surface always did this to a person, startling with the intensity of the light and the strange, almost fuzzy quality that air gave to your vision. There was something not quite right about seeing in air. Ozean could never get used to it no matter how he tried.

He opened his mouth to say something to Eelico when he realized his friend was deep in conversation with the otters. He smiled and leaned back, recognizing Eelico in full storytelling mode. Best to let him finish the story, then talk to him. Besides, when he talked to Eelico later, he could find out the first part of the story, definitely a bonus.

Eelico was, indeed, entertaining an audience of sea otters. Most of them were taking a break from hunting and doing the all-important work of fluffing air into their coats. They took this very seriously--it was impossible to completely dry out sea otter fur that had gotten wet, and unlike seals, they needed their heavy fur to stay warm in these cold temperate waters. Stars stayed warm through whatever inner light created them; other creatures were nowhere near as lucky, and had to make do with fur or fat. However, that did mean that there was a time in an otter's busy schedule to sit back and listen to something while she worked.

Eelico was enjoying the sun as well as the company. The water was cold on his back, but his belly and neck were warm from the sun, and almost dry with how long he had been sitting here. "The second salmon swam into the throne chamber. He saw the blood hanging in the water, and he saw the scales of his fellow courtier on the king's teeth. 'Tell me,' the king said. 'I must know, for this has been bothering me. Tell me truthfully and honestly, how do I smell?' The salmon was clever, and realized what had happened to his colleague. 'You smell wonderful!' he said. 'You smell fantastic, like fresh seaweed and brine!' But the shark growled, because he knew that was a lie. So he lunged forward from his throne and he ate the salmon whole, snap! Not so clever after all," he added to a pup that was looking at him in wide-eyed amazement.

Eelico glanced out of the corner of his eye and gave a smile and a nod of approval to Ozean. He saw his friend there, waiting patiently for him to finish his story, and he couldn't help but feel glad to see him. Normally, Eelico liked to travel alone with just Mosirra for company, but Ozean was always a welcome figure on his journeys. He liked Ozean--he was a good listener, and intelligent, and he was also quite charming in his awkwardness. He was a good person to talk to, and one of the few people he felt truly comfortable with. He finished up his story and, while the otters returned to their hunting, rolled over in the seaweed toward Ozean.

"Ozean, my friend," he murmured. "What brings you around here?"

Ozean listened to the story and smiled. It wasn't a very long one, but it was amusing, and it was quite Eelico. The other Star favored stories with a grim twist, or with dark humor in them, and a story like this, of fish who chose a shark for their king, was quite dark--and funny, too. Not perhaps in a "haha, laughter" kind of way, but certainly in a "smile and snort" kind of way, which was pretty good, too. The otters had enjoyed the story as well before diving back down into the water to hunt for food again. Otters were always in a cycle between grooming, eating, and sleeping, and the cycle had moved again.

It occurred to Ozean that he was stalling actually speaking to his friend. He hadn't meant to stall, it had just...happened. He'd been distracted, and he couldn't let that keep happening to him. "Eelico, I wanted to talk to you." He took a deep breath. "You know how I've been...really lonely, for a long time, since Tir naNog broke up? Well...I realized...I want to be part of a herd again. Or at least, I'd like to be with other Stars again. It's been a very long time, and I've lived alone and I've lived with others, and I realize...I can't live alone. I mean, I can, but I don't enjoy it, I'm not...I'm not happy. I miss having people around me.

"And I was thinking," he added. "That...if I were to...be with other Stars? Or at least with one other Star? ...I would like it to be you. I would like...if you and Mosirra would permit it...to travel with you. When you next move on. To the next place. I can't be alone anymore, it's messing me up in my head. I know you like to be alone, I know you like your solitude, but I can't help it, I just, I need to be with other Stars. I'm too social," he said miserably. "But if I could be with you...well, I love your stories, I love talking to you, your insight, your knowledge, you know so many things I don't know. So if you wouldn't mind...please....I feel like I'm losing my mind out there alone. I need your help. To keep my mind, that is." It all came out in a rush at the end, and he could start to feel the bitter sting of tears in his eyes. He couldn't help it--his need was burning inside him, and he knew that Eelico favored his privacy--he was not likely to agree to any of this.

But he also knew that what he'd said was true. He wanted to travel with Eelico. He...liked Eelico. And he wanted to spend more time with him, as well as just...spend time. With another. Even if only for a little while, every once in a while.

Please.

Eelico listened to what Ozean said, and he was left speechless. This...was not what he had expected Ozean to say.

What had he expected, anyway? To be honest, he wasn't sure. Ozean had rarely ever asked him any favors in the past, and when he had asked "favors" they had almost always been ones that Eelico was about to ask of him. For example, just as Eelico was getting ready to ask Ozean if Ozean wanted to hear a story, Ozean would ask him for one, before Eelico even had a chance to speak. He would ask Eelico if there was anything he could do for him before Eelico had the chance to ask Ozean if there was anything he could do for the other stallion. It was uncanny, and for a storyteller like Eelico, it felt like more than that. It wasn't coincidence or luck, it was some kind of invisible resonance between them, where when one of them needed something, the other already knew what it was, and was ready to provide it. Spooky, and Eelico had often wondered if it meant anything in the end.

So when Ozean had asked for a favor, he had been completely surprised. He hadn't felt any need for Ozean to give him something or reciprocate something, and yet, here he was, asking Eelico a question. The Alcor Nova listened to Ozean pour his heart out and Eelico felt a pang in his chest. Poor Ozean...of course, he'd known. Ozean had felt unwanted and unneeded in his old herd, and so he'd struck out on his own, shortly before that herd dissolved of its own accord. Eelico had been glad of that at the time, as he'd never felt like Tir Na nOg had deserved his friend, but now he wondered if he'd been too hasty. Ozean was right--he was still enough of a social animal to need the company of his own kind. Eelico was lucky--what little company he needed had always been sated by Mosirra's constant presence watching over him.

Now he realized that the happiness Ozean had shown at seeing Eelico every time they had met since had been hiding a dangerous undercurrent of desperation, of need. Eelico should have felt that sooner--he and Ozean were sort of connected, weren't they? So why hadn't he felt this sooner, the pain his friend was in?

Normally Eelico would never have said yes. He liked to keep people at a distance. People tired him out. All he needed was Mosirra, so all he kept was Mosirra too. But Ozean was different. He was very different. Ozean said that Eelico was knowledgeable? That was nothing, nothing to the kinds of things Ozean knew. Ozean was a born scholar, while Eelico, he was just a storyteller. Ozean impressed him, even as he charmed Eelico's oddly cold heart.

Eelico nuzzled Ozean gently. "Of course you can stay, my friend," he said softly. "All you have to do is ask, and you may stay with us. I would be happy to have your company. And, once she gets used to it, I'm sure Mosirra will be too." He closed his eyes, and tried to ignore the thumping feeling inside of him at the close contact between his nose and Ozean's. This felt right. This was their bond, showing through once again, in Ozean's darkest hour...and that bond made Eelico happy, too.

Mosirra took the news better than even she had expected, but that wasn't saying much.

She looked at Eelico in disbelief. Seriously? They were going to be traveling with him?! All because of some...connection between them? The way that Eelico described it, it sounded supernatural, and Mosirra didn't like that one bit. She was honest enough with herself to know that it was because she was jealous. She wanted to be the one important person in Eelico's life, the only one with a special important bond to him, and here Eelico was, saying that destiny had brought them another companion, someone who was in some way "meant" to be with them, destined, in fact, to travel with them?

That was preposterous. Eelico didn't say it out loud, but his eyes, his ears (so expressive!), the way he swam, the way his tail flicked, all of them were obvious cues to the Star who had lived at his side all his life, that Eelico was in love with Ozean, and to be honest, part of her wasn't surprised at that. He had always viewed Ozean a little differently than he had their other encounters. "Special bond," though? No, it was love, and why couldn't Eelico just say that?!

Oh well. Mosirra sighed, shot Ozean, who was waiting some way back, looking small and scared and lost, a narrow-eyed look, then looked back at Eelico. With a gesture, she said, "Oh, all right. If we really must. But I'll have you know, he's one of the silliest people I've ever met, not including that Lyra with the swan face." Eelico nodded. He knew exactly who Mosirra was talking about. "If Ozean is going to be around, I guess I'd better get used to it, eh?"

Eelico nodded and said out loud, "Yes. He will be staying with us for a very long time, I think."

"Forever," Mosirra gestured.

Eelico smiled. "I suppose...who knows? We shall see where the currents take us."

And that was that. Mosirra looked over the two of them and sighed again. Guess I've got me two wards now, she thought.

Mosirra smiled.
