Slowly the sun moved across the sky, it was still early morning and the whole day lay before him. It was time. On silent hooves he walked to the designated meeting place to begin that day’s lessons. Only one son stood beneath the ancient oak. He let out an exasperated sigh, “Where is your brother?” In a sense it was a rhetorical question and he did not expect a reply from his present son. It seemed that Erebes did not wish to take these lessons seriously and to Háidēs, he was the one son who understood the material without having to spend hours studying it. Plants and medicine came easily to Erebes; perhaps it was because he seemed to be part plant himself. The stallion turned his attention and gaze to his other son; Westrion knew the material, but it took him longer to remember the information provided. It reminded Háidēs of himself when he was first learning the lore of the plants. Westrion was brilliant but his brother out shown him with his knowledge of plants. Háidēs shook his head, riding himself of thoughts that would interfere with today’s Herbal lesson.
“Okay, well let’s get to work. I will take you to different plants around the forest and I will want you to name the herb, what its used for, and how will you prepare it to give to a patient,” the great winged stallion smiled at his son, he would not let his son’s education go to waste just because his brother decided that these plant lessons were beneath him.

He did not even bother to reply to his father’s rhetorical question, for he knew what it was and that they both knew that Erebes would only show up if he believed he had something to learn. Since his brother was almost a plant himself, he knew the properties of each living green thing in the forest. He was a walking, talking, apothecary. Westrion did not feel jealous toward his brother for his knowledge; he knew how much Erebes suffered because he believed that he was not a part of the family despite how much everyone told him otherwise.
Westrion not having the sixth sense with plants spent hours after each lesson, repeating each herb to himself until he could recite the properties in his sleep. It was hard work, but it was well worth the countless hours of memorization. And there was an incentive to do well with the tasks that his father laid out, for after each successful lesson, Father and son would look for precious stones. This brought the question to Westrion’s lips, he knew what the answer would be, but he could not help but ask anyway, “Father, after lessons today can we search for stones?” The young colt shared the same passion for stone work as his father. With stones the learning came easily without much memorization. The stones seemed to resonate with him.
Not as quiet as his father, Westrion followed the great stallion deeper into the woods; he knew all the plants that they passed and only a few would actually be used to treat a patient.

His chocolate colored eyes looked over at his son, he was glad that there was no rivalry between his two boys, even if one showed more skill than the other. The stallion closed his eyes; he and Lina were so blessed to get Erebes and Westrion. They had spent years trying to conceive, but it seemed that it was an impossible task. At that time he continuously blamed himself for the lack of children, believing that he was cursed. Then one day, Lina was pregnant. They had two beautiful sons and even though they knew that their real son was taken away and replaced by Erebes, they did not love him any less than Westrion. To them Erebes was their real son.
“Yes my son, that would be an excellent reward,” Excitement welled in the stallion; he loved stones and how each seemed to have their own energy that accentuated one’s own energy. There were stones for healing, protection, prosperity, and so many others. A thought crossed his mind, once his boys learned all they could from him, he would gift them each with a amethyst narcissus flower pendant, to show them how much he cares for them and that he believes them to be skilled in healing. With that thought he turned to his present son and began the final examination of the herbal lessons, for tomorrow lessons with patients would commence.
He stopped in front of a plant that was quite pretty, it was surrounded by bright green leaves where copious amounts of small black spire like berries, all held together with a red stem, “What is this plant, what does it do?”

Westrion walked up to the plant. He had only seen it once before, at the beginning of his lessons months ago. Even though he had not seen it in months, the answer came effortlessly and quickly to his mind, “It is an elderberry. The berries and leaves have traditionally been used to treat pain, swelling, infections, coughs, and fevers. In this form the berries are extremely poisonous and must be heated before they can be consumed. A hot rock would do, unless a soquili who has flames upon them is about. On the hot rock you will create a paste of the berries, and then once they have cooked long enough, add the paste to water and allow the patient to drink.” He looked up at his father, “The use of this herb would be difficult to use in the winter unless there was a soquili who could use fire, for the rocks would be cold instead of hot.”
