When Dante had left the cave to go forage for food, the baskets had been silent and still. Not expecting his children to emerge just yet, he took his time collecting food from the frozen forest surrounding the cave he and Ravyn had moved too when it became clear that their willow tree home was soon going to be too small.
He piled the food on a broken spruce branch, then pulled it home, letting it slide on top of the snow beside him. Pine cones, winter berries, sparse grass and weeds torn from from beneath the snow. It was a winter's meal for sure. Spring couldn't come fast enough.

Ravyn had kept the baskets close together, lying beside them with her wing wrapped around them to help them warm. Winter was a lousy time to have foals. She sighed and rested her head against the nearest one, letting her eyes close for a moment while she waited for Dante to return. She certainly hadn't expected the baskets to start to wiggling either.

The basket had been warm, cozy, and had in no way prepared him for the chill of the outside world. But the weaving was beginning to press against his flesh and the only way to get comfortable again seemed to be through the small crack at the seam. With a displeased whimper he pushed up at the lid of the basket. The chill rushed in and he jerked his head up with a cry, pushing the lid back and uncovering himself entirely.
The world wasn't much brighter than it had been inside the basket, but then he'd only opened his eyes maybe a couple times. The world out here left him squinting and shivering as he looked around, seeing a new source of warmth.

Bopped in the head with the basket lid as it flew open, Ravyn was stunned a moment and didn't realize what was happening right away. Blinking her eyes, she shook her head to clear it. Her first assumption was that a breeze had just flipped it opened, but when she moved to nose it close again, her eyes met with a small pair of eyes peering out at her.
"Oh!" she said in surprise, leaning over to look at him. "Hello, little one!"
Were the others stirring as well?

The voice was already familiar too him, and that face, this figure could only be one thing. Mom. Warmth and safety. He tried to stand, to pull himself out of his basket and press himself against her, but his legs wouldn't obey. Distressed, he cried out again.

A little boy. Ravyn's smile was perhaps the largest she had ever donned. "It's alright, little one," she murmured, nuzzling his little body gently. He was so small, were they always so small? "Your father will return soon, and then we can help you out. Do not fret."

Wh..huh...What was that?
There is was again! Jarred into conscious, the little foal heard noises and movements much more clearly than it ever had before. Tilting their head a little closer, it listened for more. It heard the voice it had always loved to hear. It didn't know what or who it might be, but when it spoke to it, they always wanted to hear more. This time it was answered not by the deeper noise, but by a cry! With out thinking, the foal answered the cry with one of its own. Shifting in its camped little home, that was its world up until this point, it wanted to be closer and closer. Wiggling, like it had so often, the foal shook and shook, crying a little quiter, but consistently, waiting for a reply.

He leaned over the side of his basket, stretching his neck out to nudge the shaking object. The noise it made wasn't familiar, but something deep inside him told him that it was good. The branch had snagged on a rock, forcing Dante to stop and try to lose it without knocking off any of his cargo. If he had any idea what was happening back at the cave he would have left it there without a second thought to rush home.

"Oh!" Ravyn looked over at the second basket to move, a bit alarmed. They were all waking up! She rose up a bit, peering out of the entrance of the cave. Where was Dante? "Little ones, little ones. Don't be afraid."The third basket was still a while longer, sleeping while his brother and sister bounced around him.

The foal didn't understand that it could leave its basket, not truly. And so it came quite a surprise when they continued to wiggle with so much fervor that it tipped over, spilling out of its home. The ground was freezing, its eyes were blurry, and it's legs were twisted up. Its neck muscles, not use to being stretched were weak and it was a strain to keep its little head up though it managed with much wobbling and bobbing. Blinking, the little filly continued to make her quiet cooing, looking about the room as her bright gray eyes adjusted. The first thing they landed on her eye's like her own, above her. The next, a black head sticking out of a basket, with bright gold circles. She paused her noises to stare at him a little then made a very distinct whinny directly at him, grinning all the while, short tail giving a shake.

The little colt cried one last time then lowered his head to rest it on the edge of his basket, resigned to staying put for the time being. The presence of his family around him was calming, in it's own way, and with his mother close the cold air was already bothering him less.

Absolutely beaming, Ravyn scooted closer to her uprooted children, nuzzling them both in turn. They were beautiful, absolutely beautiful! She couldn't wait for Dante to see them.
"My sweet babies," she cooed, pride oozing from her. Behind his mother, the third basket bounced a bit as well, undetected by her for the moment. The little foal inside yawned, then kicked out with his legs, breaking through the basket and effectively flopping over onto the cold stone. Still half encased in the wicker basket, he blinked up in complete shock.

The filly kept her wings tight, blinking up happily at the much larger mare that smelled overwhelmingly comforting. And her touch--she wanted to be closer! She tried to stay as close to the mare as possible, but her legs were not cooperating at all. She felt weak, but energetic at the same time. She wanted to stand, but lay down next to the larger mare simultaneously. Indecisiveness had her easily distracted, her wide silver eyes blinking at the slightest movement or noise, her ears and tail flicking about.
