In Paoma's opinion, it was far too wintry to leave home for extended periods of time. Winter as when snow blanketed the world and the plants and animals all went to sleep, waiting for the warmth of spring to breathe life back into the world. So Paoma, naturally, followed suit, retreating into the comforts of her small home and hearty fire and avoiding the cold and treacherous world outside.

Unfortunately for Paoma, Little Brother did not agree.

Winter, snow, ice! It was all so very exciting and the cold made his fur puff to twice its usual volume. There was little the grimalkin enjoyed more than plowing chest-deep through freshly laid snow and skidding pell-mell across a frozen pond while yowling raucously.

In the spirit of celebrating winter, Little Brother had spent much of the past days meowing piteously by the door while Paoma did her best to ignore him. But the grimalkin was keen on leaving cozy house, so finally, on the third day, Paoma relented, bundling herself up and stepping out into the vast whiteness that was the world.

"No, not that way, Little Brother!" She said suddenly, noticing the path he had chosen for them. "It's too cold to go into Palisade!" But the grimalkin did not seem to hear, or if he did, he was not intent on listening.

While winter and snow and ice may not usually be the fondest of weather for the less furry friends of the many animals running about Sunderland, there was no mistaking the excited crunch of the snow beneath the young girl's feet. Her breath was freezing in the air before her with each exhale, though her chapped lips were curled into an excited expression of glee. Yes, tonight would finally be the night, she knew it!

However, not only were there her own footsteps, but those beside her. Melia didn't mind the colder weather, she was indifferent on the matter really, but there was little she could do to stop the infectious excitement of her Chosen. Her own steps had a little bit of spring in them, if not only to shake off the snow each time. However, soon enough, the cries of a grimalkin caught her ears, perking up the slightest as she stopped. With one glance between the two, it wasn't long before the two, side by side, went out searching where the sound had come from.

While the two really should be on their way to the observatory to prepare for one of the clearest nights of the year, there was plenty of time for adventuring, was there not?

Somewhere along the way on his adventure, Little Brother found something new and unexpected. Paoma could tell from the way he suddenly went quiet, went from being a rowdy and uncontrolled mass of energy to something much more contained, as if he had bottled up all his energy and turned it toward one special curiosity. The grimalkin slowed and his steps turned careful, not out of fear or apprehension, but out of sheer concentration as he began to move purposefully toward one destination.

It was the look he tended to get whenever he had spotted magic, and Little Brother was very good at spotting magic. Behind him, Paoma grew similarly quiet, following dutifully in her familiar's footsteps as he prowled through the snow, watching and waiting and listening...

And then he saw them - or rather, her. The grimalkin had little interest in the girl, but the Guardian by her side was another matter entirely. To him, the doe all but radiated energy. She was wholly magical and fascinating, the sort that Little Brother seemed to care about most.

Paoma came up beside him and laid a small hand on his head. The grimalkin purred into her touch, but his glowing eyes remained fixed on the pair headed toward them. Paoma couldn't quite see them yet, obscured as they were by the snow. "But you're certainly good at spotting them, aren't you?" The grimalkin responded with a single, lonely meow. Yes, he was.
