The hustle and bustle of the docks on Bastion was always a little crazy to the slender dark haired young woman as she navigated to a clear area. It wasn't that she wasn't used to so many aliens. They'd been lots of aliens on Earth until she was about five and the new relay system had opened up and a lot of them finally were able to go home. Heck, best friends were aliens, her first-mother was an alien, she was half alien. It wasn't that she didn't speak the languages. She was fluent in English, Galactic, Quarian, and a smathering of Turian. So why did she feel like someone opened an airlock and kicked her out without a suit!?"Now we'll be on Rannoch for the next six months if anything happens to you and you need to get in contact with us." said one of the figures coming up behind her, adjusting her hood and pushing a strand of long dark hair back under it. "Oh, Ranna! I'm so proud of you!" she said putting her arms around the younger woman."Thanks, Momma. I know." Ranna said hugging her first mother, Tali'Zorah back. She pulled back and looked directly into her mother's glowing silver-blue eyes. Those shining orbs always brought up fond memories for Ranna from when she was a child. The special times they'd gone to the clean room to play, until the day when Tali'Zorah vas Normandy decided that enough was enough and if she was going to really make a life with her human lover and daughter she was taking off the damn suit! Of course, it wasn't perfect, cold and flu season not to mention high pollen count days sent the pair of them diving for breathers and filters. There was only so much you could do to fight the power."You'll be fine, kiddo." Her other mother said coming up and putting an arm around Tali. Andy Clarke was imposing for a female, she was tall and built to withstand just about anything, thanks to some genetic meddling a couple generations back. She ran a hand through short blonde hair that had completely natural lavender streaks in it. "Thanks, Papa." Ranna said with a teasing smile. It was something she'd never outgrown from her childhood, calling her second-mother, "Papa" instead of "Mother" or "Mom." "Brat." Andy said with a smile hugging her daughter. "We love you." she said smiling and kissing Ranna's forehead."I love you guys too." she looked at the time on her omnitool and made a shooing motion. "You better hurry though, you're gonna miss your connection, and I have to go check in, or something or...I dunno!" she said trailing off. She watched her parents chuckle at her and there were more hugs and kisses, before they finally joined the flow of traffic again to make their way to their ship to Rannoch.
Ranna just stood there for a moment, feeling lost and a little abandoned. She knew she shouldn't, she'd known this was coming for years. Her parents had had enough "discussions" about it before coming to her to see what she wanted to do. Honestly there hadn't really been a choice...it had been college first to make Papa happy, and then go on her Pilgrimage. There was no avoiding the second, it meant far to much to Momma to Not do it, and now here she was. Ranna sighed and hefted her bag, resisting the urge to hid behind a breather, she instead ducked her head and pulled up her hood, and preparing herself to have people raise eyebrows at her ID. It wasn't every day people got to gawk at the odd combination of Terran and Quarian naming conventions.

Zak grunted as he downed the last dregs of his instant coffee and crushed the cup. He was pretty sure this crap didn't have an effect on him anymore, but wasn't quite brave enough to try the sludge offered in the office break room. Particularly since he'd heard about an incident where some rookie mistook the apha (how? the s**t's purple!) with the human-friendly stuff and ended up getting his stomach pumped. It sounded like too good a prank to pass up, and he wasn't exactly liked around here. Or, well, perhaps welcomed would be a better way of putting it.
Rubbing a hand over his eyes and down further to scratch at his stubble-covered chin, the male stared with a sigh at the aerogel screen. Aunt Aella had warned him that working at B-Sec would be boring for a no-name like him, but this was just intolerable. Still, it didn't feel right to walk, not after all the strings his family pulled to land him here, and god, all the lectures. Blah, blah, blah, responsibility, blah blah I didn't clean up my act so you could screw your life over, blah blah blah... and Mom just giving him that look.
Futtar.
Running both hands through his black hair now while trying to get his bleary eyes to process the dry-as-hell report standing out on the orange screen (leave it to a cop to make a murder sound boring), Zak debated just calling it quits for the day. This just wasn't happening, but the moment he worked up the nerve to drop his finished data pads in the 'OUT' bin the doors slid open to admit two turians that were obviously in the middle of a conversation."-but that was back when Bailey was running the place, you don't see much of that now. Oh, hey, FHR."The familiar predator eyes glanced his way, and Izaak smirked. "What's wrong, Acutus? Too much of a mouthful for you?"
It was a running thing to shorten his last name to just the acronym, more polite than some of the other things that got tossed his way for sure, but it was just too good an opportunity to rib on Acutus to pass up though. He wasn't a bad sort, a little less stiff than most of the 'Tall and Pointy's he had to work with, and their banter helped to make the days suck less.
Sorry, 'days'. They were on a space station, after all. The turian spread his mandibles in a grin as he flicked his clawed fingers at Zak good-naturedly in his species equivalent of giving someone the bird. "What would be the reply to this? "In your dreams?" Right? Been around you humans too long if I'm catching your dirty jokes.""Ah, that's right, I keep forgetting how ancient you are. Can practically see the gray on the edges of your scales. Sorry old man, I'll try to keep the vocabulary clean for your delicate sensibilities...."
Zak ducked just in time as Acutus apologized to his buddy, who was doing is stoic best to ignore the by-play, before aiming a sound 'thwap' with his data pad and hitting the back of the chair rather than Zak's head. Feeling much more awake, the human stood up and chuckled as Acutus's eyes gleamed down at him.
"Alright, alright, what do you need? Surely this isn't just a play date.""What a perceptive youngling you are. Your turn at the front desk, I'll take over processing for a bit while you get to deal with the general public. And remember, smile!"The turian gave a smile that could best be described as 'nightmarish' while Zak groaned. He let the 'youngling' comment slide since it was a dig at both their expenses, but since he was wearing the title he did his best to act the part; slouching his shoulders and obviously dragging himself to the door with dread. Looking over his shoulder as he crossed the threshold, he caught a glimpse of Acutus picking up the crushed cup with a shake of his head before the doors closed off the view. Sighing, he straightened up and plastered his fake 'dealing with the idiots' smile before heading to one of the front desks of B-Sec; already aware of the people standing in que to complain about this or that or any number of problems.

Ranna shuffled along with the look of someone who was contemplating murder. After being hassled by security, (Yes, that was her real name! No, she wasn't trying to pull anything! Yes, her first-mother was THAT Tali'Zorah.) all she wanted to do was be left alone. Of course that wasn't going to work out either! She still had hotel staff to deal with, wait staff of where ever she decided to eat, and secretaries of HR departments to talk too. The last one made her flinch a bit. She didn't know if it was technically cheating to work for a company on one's Pilgrimage. Yes, her mother had said it happened from time to time, but when the idea was to help improve one's races survivability...Granted times had changed, the Quarians weren't nomads anymore, they had a home planet just like everyone else. She sighed, that didn't really make her feel any better. What also didn't help is that any time they went to Rannoch, she felt like everyone was watching her...waiting for her to either screw up or do something great.
Ranna wished she was on either of her parent's home planets right now. Then there would be a convenient rock to kick. No matter where you were in the galaxy it always seemed that there was a rock right when you need to brood on the subject of life, the universe, and everything. Here there was just more deck plating. She stopped and moved to get her wallet out of her back pocket and then froze. There had to be a mistake! She checked her other back pocket and then dropped her bag and checked her front pockets and the pockets on her hoodie. It was gone. She knew she put it back in her pocket after she finished getting shook down by security, but now it was gone.
F***fu*****Futtarbosh'tet! She took several deep breaths, this wasn't a total disaster...she had a back up credit chit in her bag...no the only things in there were some pictures, another chit, her ID, some useless Terran credit cards left over from college, and...a card with the comm numbers of the companies she had interviews with over the next few days because she hadn't uploaded them to her omnitool yet! She made a strange squeaking noise and then started for the B-sec offices, realized she hadn't picked up her bag, ran back, picked it up and bolted for the offices. Keelah, let someone be dumb enough to try and pass themselves off as me!
