Free on the island was a very big deal, especially when it came to tech of any type. Melvin already owned a tablet due to funding for his artifact research, but another wasn't always bad, and he knew Rin needed a tablet for her own research in the greenhouse. It would be a nice gift seeing as they didn't get a chance to do much during Christmas.
He never met Solomon, but he must have been either knew or ridiculously kind to offer a tablet for free and not pawn it off for something very valuable. A tablet that was already runiced, a very costly process, was a very desirable treasure. Melvin wasn't about to let anyone alert Solomon about keeping it, and wasted no time finding his room and knocking.

He'd been getting the sand off of his newest find when the rap came on his door, summoning Solomon to it without much time to waste as he opened the door to a less-familiar-face.
Though his visor'd face was likely just as unfamiliar.
"Yo! You're the one coming for," he held up the tablet he'd been cleaning the screen of, "This, yeah?"

Melvin didn't know Solomon, but he assumed he was a rather every-day hunter. When he saw his own reflection in the gleaming reflection of Solomon's visor, he knew this man was not normal. Face guard? Why would he cover half his face like that? Personally, Melvin could see the appeal in wearing a partial mask, but it would be more practical to cover your mouth than your eyes. Then again, it had a tint to it, and he wondered if the man did any welding, or even more, just was out in the sun and needed eye protection from UV rays.
Confused and curious about what was staring back at him, he had to blink back into reality and looked over at the tablet he was holding. A dirty tablet. One he would need to clean thoroughly before handing over to Rin.
"Yes, I was the one who tweeted you. I'm Melvin Wood."
"That...works, right?" He said, pointing to the tablet. It did wash up on the beach after all so he wondered if he was just getting dirty junk.

Hey, they had matching headgear! ....Kind of. Either way, Solomon gave an appreciative (but hidden) look to Melvin's choice in protective eyewear (eyes were important) as he took the stranger in for about....2 seconds before talking started.
"Solomon Knolls," he introduced in turn, making a note of the more experienced hunter's name. In answer to Melvin's question, Solomon turned the power button on, waiting a few seconds before the screen started lighting up and flashing at him. "Works as well as the last one I found. Doesn't have any cracks in it either," he said as he turned the screen back to Melvin and held it out for him to take.
"Free, since I got it that way too." he said. Sure he coulda bartered stuff but....he was pretty good about what he had. Picked up anything he really needed between grocery shopping and clothing shopping with Dory.

First, Melvin took the tablet, and then gave a appreciative and genuine, "Thank you." It was shown to be working, and he could clean it off once he got back to his room. With gloves on, he didn't have to worry too much about whatever the beach washed with the tablet touching him.
THEN, Melvin decided to give Solomon some advice once the tablet was secure by his side. "Free doesn't do too many favors around here. Putting runics on anything on the island takes a lot of cash and time, especially tablets. You'd do yourself a great deal of good by selling the next one you have for essentials when you can. That way you don't wind up McGyver-ing detergent or shampoo later down the road. Also works great for saving money around the holidays."
"I'm going to assume you're new since most older hunters know not to give free tech away, right?" He wanted to be sure he was talking to a new guy and not someone who was just ridiculously generous.

Solomon didn't seem to be offended by the tip to not just 'hand out' free stuff, nodding slowly as Melvin made it clear that it would do him better to keep himself not...turning into the guy who was given clean shirts by tiny-sun-women. Oh wait, he was already that guy right now.
"Thanks for the advice," he said, scratching the back of his head, "I mean, McGyvering shampoo isn't too difficult, but I see what you mean with how...limited....supplies seem to be around here. Not that one wants to make Shampoo out of Mermaid-attracting-soap." Melvin's inquiry about him being new garnered another small nod on Solomon's part. "Few months. Woke up and those Titan-things started stomping around, so about however long ago that was."
s**t. How long ago had that been?

Melvin rose his hand up, pointing with one finger, as he was confused about something. "Mermaid-soap? Wh-" He decided that maybe he shouldn't be asking, but then again, when didn't he ask about something?
Moving that aside, he continued. "Well, you are new enough. I would say I would hope that you had been popped out of your pop at a better time, but considering you weren't welcomed to the entire facility in ruins and living in tents, it's better than any other time. Welcome to the island." He turned his head to look at his coat better. "I see you're a Sun. I didn't expect a Sun to find any tech then."
He looked up at him. "Where did you find it?" He said, taking the tablet in his hands to inspect it. It was actually rather nice.

"Could have been worse, could have been better. It's the anthem of the island as far as I've seen things going." Outside of a venture into a giant tube and the insanity titans he really hadn't gotten to do much of merit.
Maybe he was just missing the memos.
"Thanks," he said as he scratched at the front of his visor in the same way one with a nervous habit of scratching at their face likely would. "Oh, found it on the beach. Where all the mermaid-soap is."

demon_pachabel OMG sorry about lateness. "Mermaid soap?" He said, confused. Usually soap was a good thing, especially free soap as sometimes the basics got in high demand when portals were down. If you used as much persona hygiene products as Melvin did, the Quartermaster quickly would get fed up and limit your soap and shampoo requests.
However, mermaid soap sounded bad.
"Are there....mermaids making soap?" For whatever reason, he imagined them churning butter like Amish people, complete with bonnet, even though he knew that was not the way soap was made. He'd watch plenty of documentaries to know.
