It wasn't closed, not yet -- not when the rush of post-Christmas shoppers had only just cleared out, when yellow-tag sales were still firmly in effect, when every hand was called to deck -- but it was at least calmer, most of the floor associates slipping away to do aisle checks and start tidying up. Theoretically, Veer should have done the same, lateral movement into Geek Squad or not, but... But he rarely did what he should have. Instead he'd find an excuse to slip back to the help desk, to poke around behind the counter, to keep his head down at out of site. Avoid the attention of the managers, currently in a frenzy over some not-entirely-unexpected shrinkage. Draw in a deep breath. And catch the sound of something thumping in the computer room, loud enough to make him blink and turn, go very still. There it was again. With a frown, he straightened. Squinted, briefly, through the glass to see if he could find the source, and when he couldn't, reached slowly through the cracked door to flick the lights on.

Drat this stack... Ash tugged frustratedly at the laptop she was trying to free from its prison of hardware, finding it harder than she had thought to liberate her treasure without hands. Stupid people, making things so difficult... but what had she been expecting? Only an idiot would have been unable to fix the problems with this particular model in the first place, which was why the guardian felt no guilt at all for saving it from its obviously incompetent and abusive owner.
Poor baby... she'd get it to her secret lair and fix it up all shiny and new, clear out all its viruses and upgrade its components till it was moving information at lightspeed. Something this beautiful deserved a beautiful caretaker and that was just what it was going to get.
Bump. Bump. Bump.
Ash felt her rump pressed up against some boxes when suddenly the lights flashed on all around her, shrinking her pupils to thin vertical slits as she froze in place. Drat! Had someone seen her? Sharp pointed teeth shifted their grip on the edge of the box she had been tugging at as she looked around frantically at a world tinted purple, hoping against hope that whomever had brought light to this dark place would find whatever they were looking for and go away so she could continue her mission of electronic liberation.

For a moment, Veer wasn't sure what he was looking at -- the room, small, packed tight by a perimeter of busted electronics, was too bright, left him blinking his own eyes into focus. When they settled on Ash, almost near the door, his surprise melted into something else: confusion, then annoyance, mouth twisting into a slow frown. Cats, generally, didn't give two shits about computers, because they couldn't eat them, ******** them, or sleep on them. At least not when they were turned off. So seeing a cat hauling a laptop across the floor, trailing cables in its wake, was a strange sight indeed. His coworkers probably would have just stared at her in glassy-eyed shock, ignorant of what they were looking at. Veer, in contrast, had met several cats, so his immediate reaction was to step into the room the rest of the way and close the door firmly. She lacked thumbs. What would she do now? "There's not a chance in hell I'm paying to replace that, so you better put it back right ******** now."

Oh crap, he was talking to her... maybe he was one of those people who just talked to animals like they were people. Nothing to be worried about! She'd just pretend like she was any other cat, make some cute faces, do a little purring, and he'd melt right into her paws. Some cuddle and petting time and she'd be right on her way, though sadly without her precious baby... Maybe she could sneak in again later when everyone was gone and make another attempt.
Chewing on the box a little to make it look more like she was... teething, or something, Ash released the box and straightened up, arching her back up with tail raised like any cat that had spotted a potential petting opportunity.
"Mew?" She asked in cat speak, blinking big green eyes up at the man. Red hair, funny hair cut... the uniform said he worked here, which could be good or bad. Maybe she'd luck out and he would feed her or something, she could use the free meal. Dainty white paws padded across the concrete to a pair of human ankles that she proceeded to rub against, arching her back upwards as her tail curled around his leg.
Pet me... I'm just a sweet little kitty. Nothing suspicious going on here at all!

Veer wasn't exactly a cat person anyway -- even before his encounters with cats of the talking variety, the four-legged lunatic who lived with him and Quinn and devoured a goodly amount of their pizza supply. He snorted at the cute look and finally stepped in farther. On the way, he caught her with one toe, gently shoving her a few steps away, perhaps just to show man's mastery over beast, and closed the door behind him so she couldn't go anywhere. Not yet. Slowly, he stooped to pick up the box. At some point, there had been a tag attached to it, saying who it belonged to, what needed to be done, and when pickup was expected. Now said tag was gone, shed somewhere along the way. He made a sharp, frustrated ********." He twisted to look at her, eyes narrowed, assessing. "Did you eat the tag."

Oh geez, he was closing the door... either he was making an attempt to trap her in here, or he was trying to shield them from the innocent people outside. At least she knew she had a way out the way she had come in, but best not to let him know that.
As he pushed her away, she bounced up on her paws and danced out of his reach, her tail curled in the air with royal indifference. Thus far, her act seemed to be working, as he hadn't called her out on it yet. Mostly.
Then suddenly, a sharp sound from him and an accusation that had Ash puffing up in indignation.
"I most certainly did not! The very idea..." She gasped out as she flicked her tail and sat down, her paws placed primly until she lifted one to groom it smooth. The very idea... she was not some stupid house cat to go about eating things that weren't meant to be eaten, even if once upon a time she had been a real house cat. Who did he think he was talking to?
And then her pointed ears layed back as she realized she was trying to play the stupid cat and now she'd effectively blown what little cover she had. Oops.

" Ha." It was sharp, certain, his eyes narrowing as he pointed down to the beast and strode further into the room. Talking cats should have freaked him out, perhaps, but -- no, instead he just shook his head, reaching out one toe to nudge Ash back. Just to remind her than he was bigger than her. And had opposable thumbs. "I knew it. With the star and everything." Except then he paused, very still himself, because he didn't know which side this cat was on, and didn't exactly want to out himself, either. He only needed a beat to figure out a cover, squinting down at her. "You're one of those terrorists huh?"

The grey cat straightened herself up at his expression, her tail flicking as she gave him a big eyed look of innocence. At least until he tried to push her again, at which point she danced out of reach and ran over to jump up onto a desk. Padding along it with her tail in the air, her expression was one of confusion and no small amount of indignation as he asked her if she was a terrorist.
"Most certainly not!" She huffed as she perched primly on the corner of the desk, grooming a paw to wash her face with. "I don't know what gave you that idea. Do I look like I... commit acts of terror, or whatever terrorists do? I am a guide and counselor, nothing more. I'm not sure I could build a bomb even if I wanted to." Ash showed him her clean, dainty, perfect paw, completely devoid of thumbs.
So maybe that statement was an outright lie, but she wasn't going to admit that. She could build a pretty sophisticated bomb, actually, with lots of electronical parts and signals and timers and such... But she would never do that. She was most certainly not in the business of hurting innocent people, whatever he thought of her.
Her cleaning done, she turned her face to her new companion and gave him a sidelong look.
"So how is it you know about cats with stars? Or was that just a guess that cats with stars couldn't possible be normal cats..." She was rather curious now. Was he on her team? That would be nice... she wanted to meet more senshi, find one or two to guide and serve. If he was on the other side, this could possibly be a problem, but there was always the chance he was neither and somewhere between the two... not everyone had tight lips, as Ash could attest. This was not the first time her mouth had gotten her in trouble.

"I met one a couple times." It was casual, easy -- Veer was a better-than-average liar, especially when he could cover up any nervous tells by turning his face away from her, from rummaging around under the counter in search of the missing service ticket. Trying to put everything back into place. After all, if he didn't have the computer where it was supposed to be, he'd be the one screamed at by some crazy b***h on the phone -- He found it, with a triumphant noise, and twisted to grab the computer -- shooting her a narrow sort of look. "Her star was black, though."

Met one, had he? Well, that explained things a bit. A black star though?
"Gracious, her star was black? How dreadful." Ash huffed, unselfconsciously running the back of her paw over her face in typical cat-grooming fashion. Really, she had no way of knowing if her star was still gold, but she'd seen it in the mirror before. Was rather proud of its bright color, actually... having a black star like a hole in your head sounded just awful. Poor thing...
Green eyes caught sight of the ticket and pointed ears twitched on her wedge-shaped head. Mmm, that reminded her... that lovely bit of tech was in danger of being reclaimed. It was rather problematic, actually. With him here and the unwieldy size of the thing, she was going to have a hard time getting it out of here. Avarice glowed in her heart, making her ache to run her paws over the case of her darling... how cruel that life should separate them so soon when they had just been united.
Standing, Ash put on her best 'look how cute I am' look and strolled over the counter, blinking big green eyes under her visor.
"I don't suppose you could... look the other way for a bit, maybe? That poor darling there is in dire need of rescuing. I assume you work here, you know the horrible, horrible things they did to her... the brutal neglect! Oh, the tragedy of it... never living up to her true potential, condemned to death by blue screen before her time... I could save her!" The guardian's voice took on a dramatic lilt as she approached, hamming up the speech as she begged him for the laptop she coveted.
"Just think of the beauty I could bring to her... I could clean her up, get her running like new again... and then I could bring out her true potential! She could be decades faster than the crap they are putting out now... moving information at speeds that would boggle the mind..." Oh, dear... was that drool coming out of the corner of her mouth? Ash ducked her head as though over come with emotion to dab at her mouth, covering her little slip up with a sigh of longing. Surely, as one computer guru to another, he understood... Surely!

Surely not -- and right about now, he was bigger than her, in the position of power, and was unlikely to give up his place. Squinting at the cat, Veer moved pointedly to get the machine out of her grasp and settle it out of the way, as if he thought somehow he'd take human shape [a ridiculous idea] to grab it and run. "You've obviously never worked tech support." A beat. "Obviously, being that you're a ******** cat and you don't even have thumbs." He smacked the ticket against the box and squinted at her, sizing her up. "You're not cute enough for me to get yelled at over. So the question is if you'll leave nicely or I have to grab you by the scruff of the neck."

The grey cat chirped in regret as he swept the delicious tech out of her reach.
"I am more clever than you give me credit for... and my old family lived and breathed computers. I grew up sleeping on computer chips, smelling soldering and hearing the tap of keyboard keys..." Her green eyes got misty for a moment before she shook it off.
"You know, I could offer you a trade." Ash said cajolingly, her tail twitching. "I could fix up the other lovelies here, make your life easier... I could do it, you know. Fast. Effecient. And you wouldn't have to lift a finger. Just... look the other way..."
It was a bit of a stretch to ask, but she had to try... if he refused this offer, then the toy was really beyond her reach. It might be best to retreat at that point... regroup for another foray, maybe after this nosy man had gone home for the night.

For just a moment, it seemed like Veer was considering it -- quiet, his eyebrows raised and hand gone still against the counter. On the surface, it was a very appealing offer. An hour, maybe, of dealing with s**t, and then he'd never really have to do work again, and wouldn't that be grand? But slowly, his eyebrows pulled down again and he frowned at the cat. "Yeah, sure you would. No, I don't think so. I can do it myself, and better." And with that he stepped toward her, gesturing toward the closed door. "March in that direction, and right out of the store. I'll get the doors for you."

The silver cat huffed as she was told a resounding NO to her offer to do his work in exchange for the gift of a laptop. WELL. Fine then.
When he told her in no uncertain terms to leave, she lifted her head and huffed again, her tail straight up as she turned and jumped down from the desk. The picture of uncaring, she strolled towards the door and let him open them for her.
"You're passing up a fabulous opportunity..." She said as she went, trying not to look like she was allowing him to chase her off. She was leaving by choice, of course. "But if you ever change your mind, I would love to discuss an arrangement. I'm sure we'll run into each other again!" Ash chirped, looking up at him with bright eyes.

"If we run into each other here, though, I will drop kick you." It was offered cheerfully, as Veer got the door for her. He would hold it open and then, slowly, follow her out -- a forced march, still more than willing to grab her by the scuff of the neck if needed. Once she was gone, He locked all the doors behind them, to keep her from getting back in. Not that he knew, of course, how she'd gotten in to start.
