In terms of how much he did for Destiny City, Goretti wasn't at all the best senshi. It had nothing to do with the fact that he was a chibi senshi, or that he didn't engage it battles or try to eradicate or convert evil—it had to do with the fact that he couldn't focus on whatever he had powered up for.

Not during Christmas time, at least.

As soon as the sun went down and Goretti went out, it was time to look at Christmas lights. And sneak up on carolers. And look at more Christmas lights.

He was content to do just that—until he got a text from Tortali to meet her somewhere.

Tortali was infinitely better than Christmas lights.

He was so excited for her that he rushed to the meeting spot as fast as he could—a little early, but he didn't care. He burned off excess energy by running around a few trees, keeping up a jog and mimicking as if he were running after a soccer ball.

He probably wasn't doing a good job of ensuring he didn't attract any energy, but it wasn't very often that he could go outside and sing Jingle Bells as loudly as he wanted without being weird.

He was taking full advantage of the situation.

Tortali hadn’t yet told Goretti that she had become a super senshi, and she was really excited to do so, and to give the little brat his Christmas gift. Okay, so maybe he wasn’t a total brat, but he was her little brat, so that worked out.

She felt him and heard him at the same time and let out a snort of laughter. “Goretti, really? You’re going to alert the entire negaverse to the fact that we’re here. By the way, I’ve missed you kid, get over here and give your favorite babysitter a hug, okay?”

She looked different and she felt different, and she wondered how long it would take him to notice.

And above all that, how long it would take him to ask if she was cold or not, because she was quite chilly.

Goretti froze at the voice and had to stop and process what that new, powerful energy signature was as he did so; he stopped running, stop singing, and craned his neck over his shoulder. Instantly, his eyes lit up. "Tortali!" he blurted—and wasted no time in running to her. He hugged her tightly, and would have even if it had been a while since he last saw her. "Your skin is cold! You have goosebumps!" he laughed, drawing away. "Your outfit is different. If you changed clothes, why didn't you bring a jacket? I almost brought one, but I've been running to keep warm. You got stronger!" he finally blurted. "How? I've been working so hard, but nothing has changed! I need to go find Lenka and Julienne and figure out what I need to be doing!"

After Christmas, though; he didn't really want to be working on getting stronger when he could be playing in the snow, or making Christmas presents for all his friends. He badgered Tortali further, "You have to tell me, how did it happen? What happened? I wanna know everything! Oh—including how you've been," he added sheepishly, figuring he ought to throw that in there since he did care about what she had been up to recently.

She returned the hug and laughed. “It’s good to see you, Goretti. You are still as hyper as ever, I see.” Tortali stuck out her tongue and shook her head. “It’s pretty cold in these shorts you know, and even if I have a hood now. It’s not lined or anything so it doesn’t keep out the chill at all, really.” She rubbed her arms for a moment, then handed the boy a box. “I’ll tell you my story after you open your gift, okay?”

It was something silly, she knew, but she also knew how much the boy liked cows, so she thought it was at least a little bit special. It was a cow print backpack with a very fat cow stuffed animal in it, and a half gallon of chocolate milk. “It’s not much, but hey. I thought that maybe you’d like it. And if you don’t. Keep it to yourself, got it?”

Goretti seemed exceptionally perplexed when she handed over the box, though it was with great enthusiasm that he opened it up. "Tortali! You didn't have to do this!" He grinned as he pulled out the bag. "—How could you think I wouldn't love this? This is the most beautiful thing ever!"

The weight made him curious; he unzipped the bag, looked inside, and then looked up at her, grinning. "And a whole thing of chocolate milk?" Shamelessly he withdrew it, opened, it and took a big swig before holding it out to offer her some. "This is the best gift, Tortali, thank you so much. I hope you didn't spend all that money from babysitting to buy me things, so I hope you bought yourself some nice things, too! But if you didn't, you have to wait until Christmas for your present. I didn't bring it with me tonight because it's still drying and I didn't want to risk breaking it. But I'll make you some cookies to go with it and that should make up for it, right? I don't think I can top this gift, though…"

She grinned. “I’m really glad you like it. I didn’t want you to think it was too silly or kid like or whatever. But I saw it and just thought of you.” Tortali reached over and poked Goretti in the forehead. “Don’t drink all of the milk at once. You’ll make yourself sick. Anyway. To the story of me becoming a super senshi…”

The green haired senshi made a face, trying to figure out where she should start, then finally shrugged. “There was a purple haired page and me trying to fight a youma, and it really wasn’t working, so this fat brown guardian cat came and upgraded my pen and poof. I was totally a hooded super senshi. And that’s about all.”

She knew he wouldn’t be pleased with this bare bones story, so she stuck her tongue out at the boy instead. “By the way. The cat was named Julienne. She told me so. So there. You can ask her for all of the details if you know her so well.”

"Kidlike?" Goretti scoffed. "No, this is the most awesome gift, ever." He didn't heed Tortali's direction not to drink all the milk at once; as he listened to her story he sat down and gulped more chocolate milk than should have been humanly possible. He almost managed to keep it all in his mouth—until Tortali mentioned Julienne and he spurted a bit.

The milk was almost half gone, but he didn't seem affected at all and hastily screwed the top back on as he sat back up. "Julienne? I do know her so well! She's the cat that awakened me! She's a super close friend! But she didn't tell me that she was the one who could make me stronger! I have to find her! Do you think it's too late tonight to drop by? I don't want Lenka to get in trouble for me bothering her."

Goretti squirmed, as though it were killing him not to just run to Millie's house and plead to borrow the cat for a moment. "Oh," he finally groaned, "It's too late! I'll have to go tomorrow, won't I? Tortalli, it's killing me! I want to be strong, like you! I can't keep you safe and have your back if I'm not stronger!"

Tortali blinked. “Well, I don’t know, I think she just happened to be in the right place at the right time, so…yeah. I’m pretty sure me and Megiddo would have been killed if she hadn’t been there to give me this boost. I guess I was just…you know. Ready. I don’t know if asking her will get you to super though, buddy.” She reached down and ruffled his hair, sticking out her tongue.

“I bet you’re mighty close though. You’ve been at this for a while, haven’t you?” She looked him over. “I don’t know. Maybe you should talk to her though. I’m sure she can give you at least a little bit of insight for when you’ll be ready to reach super stage…I can’t wait until you do. I bet you’ll look awesome…and a lot less like a little bottle of glue. I bet you’re pretty excited about that at least! Plus. We’ll kick some serious chaos butt, you and me.”

Because she was his babysitter first and foremost. And she was going to protect him. No matter what. It was her job, and most of the time she got paid for it, so it worked out great.

Tortali's words only served to encourage him, and it was obvious by the way the he moved to stand on his toes that he was elated at the prospect. "You're right!" he decided; he had been doing this for a while—he had to be getting close! He would have to get stronger, soon! Tortali had already won this race, now he just needed to catch up. He'd do it for himself—and for her. He needed to be stronger so he could look after everyone he cared about.

He had too much energy again and was having a difficult time containing himself. "Let me go home and see if I can get in contact with Lenka so she can tell Julienne I wanna meet up again."

He ran to Tortali and gave her a quick hug. "Come babysit me again soon, I wanna talk more! Thanks for tonight! Don't stay out late, or get in trouble! You gotta be around so I can show off my super cool new, uhm, super powers! Ah, as soon as I get them, but you know! That's gonna be super soon!"

Tortali shook her head and laughed. “All right, all right. Well, you have a super good time! And I’ll see you super soon, and you better be super awesome by then, okay?” She grinned and gave a wave, laughing as she turned around to walk off.

Boy that kid was adorable. And he would turn into quite the little super hero once he toughened up a bit…maybe when he finally hit super senshi she could push him a little bit to get stronger. If he was going to have any sort of excitement about being super…well, she’d just have to make sure that he was really ready to take on the evils of the city.

But hey. That was seriously what being a babysitter was for. And she wouldn’t disappoint anyone.
