The two mares had been traveling for a while. Down from Dreamspace they'd Fallen, and now they traveled across this strange land. It was eerie--they'd hardly seen another star in the past month. The closest they had come to interaction was fleeting glimpses in the distance. Which was ridiculous-- everyone knew that stars were social creatures. Did no one here live in herds?
The matter should have been merely academic, but winter was coming on fast. Already the trees were frosted in the morning and the water was frozen over. Back home, winter meant snowdrifts knee deep and everyone living in shelters. In this strange landscape, was it the same? Amerea sincerely hoped not. They were alone out here, and the idea of spending winter in the elements terrified her. In fact, spending just the night in the elements was terrifying as well. Night was falling now; their shadows stretched out beside them and their limbs were getting heavy. She pressed her side against her sister's as if the simple touch could transfer strength as well as heat. "How are you holding up, Wink?" she murmured. Her sister was her entire world now. She'd always been important to her, but now that she'd left her family and begun a quest for a new home to live, one where she and Wink would be accepted equally, the yellow mare was all the more important to Amerea. She'd do anything to make her happy. She sincerely hoped that freezing to death did not make her happy. If it did, well, she was going to be happy right quick.
The arcturus knew that was a bad thought. She knew it was unkind, and uncharitable, and that it was merely the exhaustion talking, the desperate need to rest and recuperate. She wasn't bitter towards her sister--she really wasn't. She was just frustrated with the lack of anyone in this landscape. There had to be someone out here.

The days were getting shorter, the nights longer. Wink found herself more and more reluctant to go anywhere. Desperately she wanted to find some place to bed down for the winter. A herd, preferably, but they'd been searching for over a month now, and the few stars they'd seen were loners running in the opposite direction. There probably were herds out there, somewhere, but where they might be, Wink had no idea. She was beginning to face the possibility that they might not find a herd before winter came, and she had no idea if it snowed here.
Not a day went by that Wink didn't regret all of this. Not the wandering around, nor the cold, nor the looking for a new home, those were troubles she was willing to weather. No, what bothered her more than anything else was the fact that she'd dragged Amerea into it. At the time, it had made sense--Amerea had been complaining that her family didn't respect her younger sister and that she wanted to run away with her, Wink had suggested a solution, and they'd pulled the plan off. But now, with frost forming in the morning and their legs aching from the weather, Wink wished she'd never had to drag her sister into this miserable wandering life. She wanted a better life, one with love and light, but Amerea'd already had that. She'd already had a loving family, but she'd given up her privilege, her status, her rank, just so that Wink could be happy. The half-arcturus mare felt humbled by that, and more determined than ever to find a place to stay so that they weren't hurting anymore. Anywhere would do, just so long as they could stay there for a little while. She wasn't even looking for a perfect home anymore, like she had in the beginning. Now she was just desperate for some place to stay, someplace where Amerea would be content and warm.

The northern border patrol this afternoon was nippy. Frost covered the leaves, or would soon enough, creating the illusion of a light dusting of snow. Those few times it snowed in Sunflare territory, the drifts were never deep, and they rarely stuck for more than a day or two. They were close enough to the ocean to feel its soothing effects on the weather, and for that, Garmionnt was grateful. His father had told him stories of wicked cold in the far north, where a star's only protection was a shaggy coat in winter. He'd spent his first winter after Falling in the north, then quickly moved south when the thaw came. The bard shuddered every time he heard the story. Someday he'd like to spend a while away from here. Much as he loved his family, his herd, his home, he wanted to see more of the world. That would inevitably mean seeing a harsh winter someday. He only hoped he could face it with the same fortitude that many another star had. In the meantime, he intended to be grateful each and every winter that he lived in a milder climate.
The Burning Sun territory was on the eastern side of Sunflare territory, tucked into a miniature valley dotted with oak trees. The main settlement was in amongst these trees just near the creek. This morning, the creek had been frozen over. The older stars agreed that it was a sign of a harsher winter to come. Unwelcome news indeed (and also a bit embarrassing. After all, bards were supposed to be repositories of knowledge, and yet Garmionnt and Llewelyn were amongst the youngest members of the Sunflare herd. Embarrassing indeed!). Garmionnt had shrugged as he began his patrol, shaking out his legs and promising to stay as warm as he could as he took the dreaded northern patrol. For once, he wished he was part arcturus--that thick feathering on the legs would be a welcome insulation against the biting cold of the afternoon.
Of course, the purpose of a patrol was not to commiserate but to observe. Even as Garmionnt was reflecting on shame and shivering, he noticed flecks of movement just beyond the border. Other stars! He lifted his head to scent the chilly northern wind (ack, chapping skin, ack). A pair of mares, from the smell of it, and not ones he recognized. Nor did he notice any scent of loam or decomposing matter--both signs of the dreaded Shadow Herd that lived in thick woodland to the east. No, these were strangers. Garmionnt frowned and ducked behind a convenient rock outcropping. They could still be hostile. Best not to risk it.

The current terrain was one of rolling hills and deadened grass. Amerea wheezed as they struggled up the hill, side by side, the feathers on their feet getting tangled in the dried blades. The path up the hill was dotted, too, with scraggly shrubs that clung to the ground like their lives depended on it. That was an ill omen if ever there was one. Desperate for a rest, the arcturus stopped, brushing her sister's side with the tuft of her tail to signal a stop. Wink obligingly halted, leaning against her sister to conserve warmth. Amerea flashed her a grateful smile as she dragged frigid air into her protesting lungs. It made her throat burn with exertion, but she didn't have much choice--breathing was breathing. Puffs of fog billowed out of her mouth every time she exhaled, and she was almost entranced by the fogs to the exclusion of all else. Scratch that--she was completely distracted. When her sister nudged her leg with her own, she blinked in confusion. Wink was staring straight ahead at a stone on the side of the path, stiff at attention. Someone was there, no doubt. "We know you are there!" she called out. "Please do not hide! We do not mean you harm, and it is rude to spy on people!"

Well, now that she put it that way, he had to step out. He could probably risk it--while it was true that stars who meant harm might claim not to, he highly doubted any of them would play the rudeness card. The bard stepped out from behind the rock just as the sun broke through the clouds and lit the landscape with the light of late afternoon.
The mares were an arcturus and a half-arcturus, both with green eyes. Though their eyes were different shades of green, their manes were the same dark gold color, rippling in identical waves from their head. The arcturus stood proud and regal, but it was her plainer-looking companion (probably her sister) that attracted Garmionnt's attention. Her coat, lit by the late sun, burned like a candle, as bright as his grandfather's brilliant coat. She looked warm as sunlight, radiant as the morning, beautiful as the summer. He thought he could hear harp music looking at her.
Oh.
He bowed his head. "Forgive me, travelers, I did not mean to be rude to you. I am Garmionnt, bard of the Burning Sun Clan of the Sunflare herd. These are dangerous times--I hope you will forgive me for being worried for the welfare of my herd. By what names might I know two--radiant travelers such as you?" He knew he should be talking to both of them, but he felt his gaze directed at the half arcturus. She was just so beautiful! The pale but brilliant shade of her eyes, the soft feathering of her legs, the way her dark hooves served to accent her bright coat...oh, she was beauty in this month of white frost! He would have to write a poem about her, no, a song. Oh, he hoped that she would stay with them, at least for a little while! He smiled at her and awaited her answer. And then she smiled back! If they replied now, he knew he would have to ask them to repeat it, because he definitely wasn't paying attention anymore.

The star behind the rock turned out to be a stallion--not that surprising, though the fact that he didn't run away from them was gratifying after so many weeks watching every stranger they came across running away from them. And he was very polite, she thought as the sunlight came out and shone almost directly in her eyes. Her sister was standing between her and the afternoon sun, causing her bright coat to catch the light. Wink looked very pretty at times like this. When Amerea turned away from her sister to look at the stallion, she could see that this fact was not lost on him. His eyes were wide as he stared, almost slack-jawed at her sister. She would have thought that rude as well if not for the smile her sister gave him. Sweet, shy, and definitely approving, not a hint of nervousness. Amerea hid a smile of her own at the dopey smile the stallion gave her sister. Amerea was a romantic at heart--the idea that her sister could find true love was an idea she'd entertained since they were very small. She'd even written stories about her sister being swept off her feet by some dashing stallion.
She'd always imagined that stallion being a knight though, not a common bard or entertainer. Oh well. Sunflare, huh? That name sounded nice, though "burning sun" sounded a bit odd. But maybe they'd have some information, or some shelter or something. Either way, she wanted to stop wandering, and she knew without asking that Wink would want to stay here at least for a little while. Maybe even longer. Time for the moment she had rehearsed in her head for months. "I am Lady Amerea na Kelbore, and this is my sister, Lady Winkisa na Redelbahn." She ignored Wink's startled glance in her direction and hoped the stallion would as well. Technically, Wink was not a lady, but Amerea refused to let anyone think that she outranked her sister. She didn't want to outrank Wink. She wanted them to be equal. She'd always wanted them to be equal. She'd made up the name for Wink ages ago and attached her mother's name to it. If anyone asked, she would tell the truth: they had different fathers. Obviously not the whole truth, that Wink's father was a mere servant who had been fired when it was discovered what he had done. No one needed to know that. All they needed to know was that Amerea and Wink were sisters, and that they were refined mares of taste that should be treated well.

Wink hadn't seen the stallion when he hid behind the stone, but she had been able to smell him, a faint whiff on the air. He smelled like acorns and sycamore seeds, but he also smelled a bit like the sea, and a lot like other stars. They had found another herd at last--or so it seemed anyway. She signaled his presence to Amerea, then let her sister do the talking. Amerea was better at negotiating--Wink just got flustered whenever she had to talk to strangers. She wasn't much of a talking-to-strangers kind of person.
When the stallion stepped out from behind the rock, she had to admit that she was a little surprised. She wasn't sure what she had been expecting, but a coat like dark midnight and a pair of emerald green eyes were not what she was expecting. She felt her face warm, and not just because the sun was out now. No, it was because of the expression on his face. It had gone from welcoming to awe-inspired within seconds, and it was plain to see that it was her he was looking at. No, not Amerea. Not her noble sister but her, Wink, the illegitimate commoner, that this handsome stranger was so bowled over by.
She smiled at him. She couldn't help it--seeing him made her happy in a way she couldn't define, and seeing him look at her like that was...a little frightening, but it was a nice kind of frightening, if that made any sense? It was exciting, and gratifying, and relieving, and...lots of good things. She was glad she let her sister do the talking--she was too tongue-tied to say a word!
Her sister managed to startle her even more than the stallion did, though. She was introduced as a lady--? She wasn't a lady at all! She didn't dare mention it, though. It would be...suspicious, if nothing else, if she immediately argued with her sister about her name.

Ladies? Well, sure, obviously, he added to himself. They were much too...elegant? Refined-looking? to be anything else.
It was that, really--it was the way that they held themselves and the way that they walked--or at least, the way the one introduced as Amerea walked, that told him that they were nobles. Winkisa, the heart-stopping one, didn't walk the same way. She walked in a shier, more...gentle way. Not gentlelady-like, but gentle, and, well, and nice. There was less confidence, a little softness, but also a feeling of hidden strength.
The sun was passing back behind a cloud, and a chill went through the air, but Winkisa was still as beautiful as she had been before, brightening up the landscape like a second sun. He even felt warm, as if it wasn't late fall at all. "Well-met, Lady Amerea na Kelbore and Lady Winkisa na Redelbahn. I'm afraid the current weather is not well-suited for travel," he added. "My clan's home is nearby. If you would like to stay the night, we would be happy--and honored--if you were to. Stay the night with us." He had realized as he said it that he was repeating himself. Silly move. It wasn't like him to do that--he was a bard, and a good one at that (if he did say so himself). How could he trip over words like that? I guess even bards do that sometimes, he told himself. Especially when they've just met beautiful strangers and invited them back home with them.

The stallion was treating them politely, and he was offering them a place to stay--hopefully a sheltered place--at his home. Things were looking positive for them, at least for tonight. As for future prospects? Well, he hadn't said anything to offend her yet. He had not yet shown any sign of being unsuitable for her sister. Yes, this was good so far. She hoped he was "the one" for her sister. She'd hate to be disappointed by Garmionnt so soon after meeting him. She hoped her sister liked him as much as she was already liking him. No, scratch that--she hoped that her sister liked him more than she herself already liked him--after all, what she was really hoping for was that Wink was in love with him, and she herself was not in love with Garmionnt.
Amerea looked over at Wink. Her sister was looking quite enraptured still. She hid a smile and turned back to Garmionnt. "We accept your hospitality," she said. "The hour is getting late, and we would be quite grateful for some shelter." Wait, he hadn't exactly said that there would be shelter, had he? Oh dear, so she'd have to fix that up... "Or even just a place to stay the night," she added carefully. "We have been traveling a long way."

It occurred to Wink that maybe she should say something, back her sister up. Did it look weird that she wasn't helping out, or saying anything? She didn't want to look weird in front of Garmionnt (what a funny name, it sounded like he was named "clothes" or something, she wondered what the story on that was?). He was much too handsome for her to mess this up with! And nice, too, he was offering them a place to stay for the night. Wink's aching legs begged to sit down, and she suddenly realized that she was thirsty. If the stars Garmionnt lived with were as nice as he was, what could the danger be in staying with him for the night?
Apparently Amerea agreed, because her sister had accepted his invitation. Wink favored Garmionnt with a smile and nodded. "We would be absolutely...delighted to accept your hospitality," she said quietly. Halfway through the sentence she realized she wasn't sure exactly what she said. She ended up stumbling over her words and probably looking like a total fool. It didn't seem to bother Garmionnt, though. She wasn't sure if that was a good sign or not--was he forgiving her for her mistake and lack of eloquence, or was he only interested in her looks? She meant...it was very nice to be admired, and to be thought of as, as attractive, but it would also be nice to be liked for other reasons. For being a nice person, or...something. Actually, come to think of it, Wink couldn't think of something she was good at that people might like her for! Other than serving, and...no, she didn't want to be liked for being a servant. Liked by her employers, sure, for the work she did as a servant, and oh, why did everything have to be so complicated?!
She didn't let any of this conflict show on her face, though. She kept the smile there and pretended that nothing wrong was going on inside her head at all, no. She was good at that. She'd had to be, in her sister's father's house.

They'd accepted! Oh, frabjous day! Calloo, callay! Gar smiled at them. Winkisa was smiling at him, too, and if anything it made her even prettier than she had been before (which had been very pretty). He bowed his head to them and lead the way back to the Burning Sun's base on a wooded hilltop. "Then follow me, my ladies, and I'll introduce you to my clan."
Gar was confident enough in his own position in the herd to be offering them a place to stay for the night. Not his position as a grandson of the Ard-Rhigh; sure, Lughnasadh was his grandfather, but that wasn't as important as it might be in other herds. Here it just...meant that you had a lot of family around, and lots of support. Other herds it might give him an important position, but here it didn't mean that much. No, his position came entirely from his place as a bard in the Burning Sun and that he knew for a fact that Sepaia trusted him. If she had been here, he knew that his Rhia would have shown these two ladies the same hospitality that he had. He knew Sepaia would let them in. She was charitable and hospitable, and she would never leave two mares out in the cold like this, no. He would introduce them when he got them back to the base.
He fell in beside Winkisa and smiled at her. "Where do you come from, Lady Winkisa?" he said to her. He wanted to know all about her. They'd probably have time later that evening, but why wait? He couldn't wait, not for this. He had to know more about her, and he had to know as soon as physically possible. He wanted to make a good impression on her, both as a host and, y'know...a stallion. She seemed to like him, that was a good sign...

Wink wanted to go with him (of course), so that settled it. A place to sleep for the night, maybe new friends to make? Certainly it looked like they were on the right track to being friends with Garmionnt, he was a very friendly fellow--although maybe that was just because he liked Wink. Time would tell. If he turned out to be bad, they'd just have to leg it.
Amerea followed Garmionnt as he led them down the hill they were on and...oh no, up another hill. She could see a copse at the top of the hill, mixed oak and sycamore. That must be his home--that would be why he smelled like those trees. That made a lot of sense. Amerea just wished his home wasn't so hard on her legs. She'd already been traveling for so long...
But she mustn't grumble. They could rest once they got to the top. They could rest and everything would be fine, and she wouldn't have to move until tomorrow morning (she hoped). She was looking forward to resting. Maybe even laying down! Yes, that sounded very attractive right now. The trees would probably keep out the worst of the wind, and help keep the warmth of the herd together.
She wasn't sure what Garmionnt meant by a clan versus a herd. Weren't they they same thing? Or...similar, she guessed. She would have to talk to him to find out. Unfortunately, he was busy talking to her sister about, well, probably about everything about her. Amerea bit her lip. Okay, this had been nice at first, but she didn't really like being kept out of the loop like this. She had to force herself not to reply to his question. He'd asked Wink, not Amerea, and it would be rude to answer a question that had not been addressed to her.
Besides, I think she wants to talk to this boy...

Wink blushed. She'd sort of been afraid to be asked this question. Her own origins were...humble. Not fancy at all. Shameful, even. She didn't want to talk about them, because her options were lie like her sister had done, or tell the truth and lose this handsome young man's trust. "A long away away from here, the estate of Lord Kelbore. My sister's father," she added quickly. "We're half-sisters." She didn't mention that she had been born out of wedlock, or that her name came, not from her father, but from her mother (very embarrassing). But this was about as much truth as she was ready to admit at the moment. It wasn't that she wanted to lie to him, more that she...didn't want to tell him the truth yet. Not until he knew her better. The problem with that, of course, being that by that point, he would feel betrayed because she had lied to him...
Oh, fiddlesticks. She changed the topic of conversation as quickly as she could. "Since we're to stay the night with your herd, may we know more about our hosts? We can tell you all about our journeys later, perhaps after we have some time to rest and eat." Getting him to talk about his herd would serve several purposes--it would distract him, it would let him talk while she labored up this hill (he didn't seem out of breath--he must trot up it all the time! Understandable, since it was his home, but still...) and it would let her know more about him, get to know if he was the sort of person to shun her for her parentage, or if his herd was that sort if he wasn't. She needed to know what she was getting into.
Garmionnt nodded his head and listened to what she had to say. If she grew up with her half-sister's father, then she must be older than Amerea. That was a little odd--Amerea seemed protective of her, and it was usually the elder sibling that was protective of the younger. Then again, some siblings were different--and maybe their family history was a complicated one. Who was he to judge? After all, there were quite a few members of his family whose history included a shameful tryst with a Shadow Herd member who later betrayed them. It was a disturbingly common story among them now, and the cause of Sepaia passing the Shadow Act, as everyone called it--the rule that no one, no one, was to have an intimate relationship with a Shadow herd member for any reason under any circumstance. She didn't want a repeat of past mistakes.
"Um..." he said, trying to figure out where to go with this with his head caught up in thoughts about their habitual enemies. "Well, our herd is the Sunflare Herd, led by Ard-Rhigh Lughnasadh and his mate the Rhiannon Regina. Our herd is divided into different clans, the Royal Sun, the Beautiful Sun, and my clan, the Burning Sun. The Burning Sun is dedicated to protecting the rest of the herd. We've been in a conflict with our neighbors, the Shadow Herd, for a very long time--their founder, Moloch, hated Lughnasadh for no reason that any of us can name. I guess he was just one of those people who liked to spite people or something, because he founded the Shadow Herd with the express purpose of ruining life for the Sunflare." He shrugged. "We're supposed to be at war, but honestly, we haven't had any fights for a long time."

Wink blinked. She hadn't been expecting that. The landscape looked so peaceful (if cold and hilly). It didn't look like the sort of place bloodshed would be occurring so often. It bothered her a little to think that maybe she was walking into a war zone, but then again, her stepfather had often been at war with his neighbors. She was used to violence in the background of her life. Funny, as far as I've gone away from my old life, it comes right back at me, she thought with some dark amusement. "Well, this Moloch sounds like a very unpleasant person," she said once she'd gotten her breath back. "I hope you drive him back someday.
"So, your queen is called the Rhiannon Regina--what's her name? And who leads your Clan? I assume its your Clan we're staying with tonight. I mean, I hope, too." She smiled at him. "I'm about ready to collapse, I'm not exactly ready to meet royalty!" It wasn't much of a joke, but she said it like it was. She was telling the truth--she hadn't expected to be staying with nobility tonight (other than her sister, of course), and she really was neither prepared for it nor particularly looking forward to it. She'd rather live a quiet life in the background. It was what she was used to after all, staying in the shadows, keeping her head down, not bothering anyone. She was still, at her very core of being, a servant, and she didn't think that a servant like her should be meeting very important people, especially when that servant was exhausted and dirty from a long journey and about ready to collapse. Yes, sleep, a nap, those things sounded good, as well as a bath, if she could get one. She was quite looking forward to that. Oh, she hoped they had a pond at the top of the hill; then she could drink and bathe, preferably before any formal introductions were made.

Garmionnt laughed. "Her name is Regina, I swear! Her name was Regina before she became the Rhiannon, but I can see your point, very confusing." He grinned at her. "But maybe not as confusing as it would be if she wasn't the Rhiannon, I guess. Who knows, maybe she was always destined to be our queen."
He shook his head at her question. "Oh, no, no, don't worry, you won't be staying with the Royal Clan tonight--at least, I wasn't intending on it. I thought maybe you could stay with us at the Burning Sun. I swear, we're much nicer people than you might expect warriors to be. Our leader--our Rhia--is Sepaia. She was one of the first champions in the herd, and she founded the Burning Sun to keep us safe. She's very kind, very honorable. I think she'd like you," he added. He knew Sepaia fairly well, between her being his leader and her son being his best friend, and he thought that what he'd seen so far of Wink and Amerea Sepaia would like. Certainly she seemed to like the same kind of people he did. "Sepaia would never let a couple of strange Stars freeze to death in this weather. Well...maybe Shadow herders, but even then, it would depend on who it was."
Royalty? Well...technically, yes...after all, they weren't called the Royal Sun for nothing. But he didn't want her to think about his family the wrong way. "Even if we were staying with the Royal Sun tonight it wouldn't be a big deal. Most of our herd is descended from Lughnasadh and Regina--so they're less like royalty that most herds have and more like Grandfather and Grandmother. So it would be less like 'here are strange visitors from a strange land, your Majesty, more like 'great-grandson has made new friends, cool.' So don't worry about them. We're not a herd that's hung up on expectations and protocol. So long as you're as polite to them as you would be to your own parents, you're doing alright.
"I hope this doesn't bother you," he added. "I mean...us being so loose and informal. I'm used to it, but I know some people are bothered by it, with everyone being basically equal in our herd. Not like most herds." He bit his lip. He hoped she didn't mind it...he knew that a lot of people were taken aback upon discovering his ancestry and his relationship to the leader of a herd. He'd known a lot of people who suddenly got cold and formal, and he hated that. He wasn't anyone special--he was just another member of a big family, some of whom weren't technically related to each other. Everyone in Sunflare was part of the family--that was what made them so special and made the herd feel like home.
