Perched on a rock at the designated starting line on the mountain slope, La'u Khara'i glanced up at the sky while the participants and a small audience - many had chosen to gather at the finish line instead, or even along the course itself - arrived and prepared. The sky was clear blue with a scattering of fluffy clouds, promising perfect weather for their race. Good. Given the events of the previous year, the last thing she wanted was bad weather.
The Queen rose to her feet, coughed, and cleared her throat before speaking. "Good morning, everyone. I know you're all anxious to get started, and you all know the rules already, so I'll keep it short. Run well. Make us proud. Spirits be with you all, and glory to the winner!"
"Ready...set...go!"
Rules: There is no post order, but everyone gets one post/roll per turn, and each turn ends when either everyone has posted, or 24 hours have passed with no posts. Each turn, each participant will roll a 6-sided die - the higher the roll, the better/faster your lion runs during that turn. The first person to reach a total of 24 will win. Only those signed up for the race may participate in the race itself, but others are welcome to post as observers. You must make an RP post with each roll.

Upendo listened to the queen, wiggling with anticipation. On the sidelines, one of her cousins called out support and encouragement. The black and blue lioness had been anticipating this since the pride's move from the swamps to the mountain, having just missed being able to participate the year before with her timing in coming home. She HAD been just in time, sadly, for the fire, and had helped many escape it. But that was in the past, and though some lions still bore injury from the event, spirits were high.
When La'u gave the go, she sprang forward, starting to run. Early on, though, she found bad footing, doing a bit more sliding than running. Perhaps, she hoped, she would make better later.

It had been some time since Songvari had done any real running. When he was a cub he had been spry enough, even winning the juvenile version of today's race, once, but that victory seemed like it had come a very, very long time ago. Of course, he had mostly grown larger and longer of limb during that time, so he ought to do even better this time around. At least in theory. In practice, Song really just did not feel that he had properly prepared for this event and almost wished that he had not put his name forward as a competitor.
It was different. His time as a pilgrim had taught him to dwell in all sorts of places, but he had done most of his growing up in the swamps and they still felt more natural to him than the constant inclines of the pride's new home. Even the hard-packed earth that made up most of the lands he had explored felt more natural at this point. It crossed his mind more than once that he might make a misstep and tumble a long, painful way down the mountain.
Song shook his head, dismissing his concerns as best he could. The sky was blue and he was fleet of foot. He would not embarrass himself against the other eight competitors. While the queen spoke he took deep breaths, trying to take in as much of the thinner mountain air as he could. Then, at last he heard the signal and he sprang forward, launching himself town the mountain at a rapid pace that did not quite border on reckless.

It would be so nice to stretch her legs. Lilija had kept herself cooped up and focused on her hunting lately, pushing all real fun to the back of her head. The blue lioness let her eyes focus on her paws for a moment and then stretched herself out. First her back legs, then her front legs. With a shake of her pelt, she looked up the sky and then over to the queen when her movement caught her attention.
As the queen greeted them, she grinned and nodded, waiting for that signal. She crouched low to the ground, rump in the air and wiggled.
Beside her were lions she didn't recognize, but that was unsurprising. Waiting was killing her, her tail lashed out hard and then ..
There it was!
She took off without another thought. She was just going to have fun with this, win or lose.

Kipenzi couldn't keep her paws still as she bounced and turned on the starting line. Her long legs and slender body had proven her a fair runner, a worthy competitor for any cheetah while in the rogue lands. Now, she had the chance to show her offspring that she still had what it took to make it to first!
Even with her nerves tingling under her fur, Kipenzi couldn't have been more excited. A race, a race, oh how long had it been since she'd raced! Long since before she'd lost her hearing, that was for sure. It worried her that she wouldn't be able to hear the starting signal, but if she watched for the reactions of the other competitors...
There! Paw moment, clenched jaws and lengthening muscles - the race was on! Kipenzi ran hard, and she ran fast, trying her best to beat herself back into shape to make it through!

Daisha couldn't remember the mountain being quite this... high. She peered down the slope from the starting point of the race, her tail twitching with nervous energy. This was the first time she had participated in a race, so equal parts excitement, curiosity, and fear coursed through her. Generally she was pretty fit, but she didn't really consider herself an athlete by any stretch of the imagination. Still, she believed she could do pretty well, as long as she didn't run into any pesky rocks!
She listened impatiently but with a smile as the Queen spoke, and luckily, she kept the speech brief. As soon as she said 'go', Daisha was off like a shot. Oh, gravity sure did funny things on slopes! She tried to concentrate on moving her paws quickly but smartly. Tripping this early on would be completely embarrassing.
