Dyakida was exploring south today with some sisters, searching for materials she could use to replentish her supplies. It was depressing to have to start from scratch like this, but what choice did she have? The fire had burned all her projects and most of her tools, save for the especially important ones that Amadi had hidden. That tree had held so many memories, but it was now only so much burnt ash. She was glad that they had found another home so soon. She was alone for the time being, but her sisters were nearby, probably finding a few things. She had started from scratch before. She would rebuild, maybe better than before. She had money enough to have some strong sisters build her something to work metal with, maybe convert a whole section of the tree for her use. She would not give up, not again. Speaking of giving up, where was her sprite? She'd gone off somewhere and vanished... "Peyla?" she called, "Peyla, where are you?"
Peyla had seen an interesting feather up in a tree. She'd tried to get it, but it had fallen into some rocks. She'd tried to get it there but, just as she had managed to wiggle into the small space and find it, she was trapped! Small pebbles held her down, and she struggled, but to no avail. She started to chime for help, but her voice was muffled by the ground. The sprite went quiet as she heard soft hissing, her little heart racing. There was something here, something near, something that might eat her. She struggled again, but could not break free. She didn't know what else to do...

Ikkio was playing in the jungle today with her sister. She hadn't gone too far- she didn't want to upset Mama too much. Then Mama wouldn't give her that present she wanted. And Kio wanted that present. She didn't know what it was yet, though. She was pretty excited! She heard a funny little sound coming from a tree. It sounded like bells, like what Belle had. Kio liked Belle. Belle was soft and fluffy and Belle didn't judge. She smiled and trotted over to investigate as a little blue hand groped suddenly out of the rubble of a rotted log. It reached around desperately, and Kio heard squeaking. She went closer, intrigued. "Kuri! Kuri! Look..." she turned around to show her sister, only to realize that she had somehow lost her twin. She was all alone. It was a novel feeling. Not a bad one, though. Kio turned back to the little hand, a smile on her face. She was sort of happy that she wasn't with Kuri. She got to have this new interesting thing all to herself. She moved one of the pieces of rotten wood near the hand, and the squeaking and scrabbling increased. Kio's face grew pensive. This wasn't right! This was something in trouble, and it wasn't an Earthling! She dug quickly and grabbed the small, scared, blue form before the snapping jaws of a small scavenger bit down on where it had been. It glared at her before burrowing back into its log. That was when Ikkio took a proper look at the small form she had in her little hands. She had never seen its like. It looked like a tiny earthling with blue skin like her mama and four arms instead of two. It had little wings and antennae. She stared at it as it lay there in her hands, gasping in terror. "You're very pretty" she said finally, giving the poor thing a little cuddle. It looked smart, but- Kio had decided- it was not a person. So she liked it.

Peyla thought she was going to die when the nasty bitey thing came after her. She had been pinned and then, suddenly, she was free. Her wings were dented, and she was stunned. She was alive. She was... alive? She chimed in confusion. How was she safe? Then she realized- it was a little earthling girl. Who called her pretty. She chimed a confused thank you and just lay there, happy to be alive.
"Peyla?" Dyakida called again. She thought she heard a chime among the Jahuar noise, and followed it. "Peyla?" Dyakida had no reason to be worried, just annoyed.
Peyla struggled to an upright position and chimed back. She was here! She was safe! Her Alkidike didn't need to worry!

Ikkio gently petting the scared thing. Poor little human-y thing. "Its okay." she said, stroking the little head gently. It was so strange and pretty and had such a pretty voice. She was very happy she was alone, though she would get in trouble for it later. Mommy didn't like her to wander off on her own. Mommy didn't even like it if she was just with Ikuri. Ikkio thought mommy was silly. She was glad that Kuri wasn't here. She got to help the pretty thing all for herself. Hers. She looked up at the call and the responding chime, but didn't otherwise move. Her expression became cool, if curious. "Do you have a friend, pretty?" she asked the sprite, looking down at Peyla. Some friend, leaving her pretty thing to be eaten by creatures!

That Chime! There was Peyla. And... another voice? A small, feminine voice. Oh no. Peyla had found a child. Wonderful. "Who's there?" asked Dyakida, walking carefully towards the sound of the chime.
She had a friend, yes yes. Two now! She chimed an explanation. That was her alkidike, see, and she had an important job, except now she was all shaken up so if the nice little earthling wouldn't mind holding her a bit? She was a friend too, and, the sprite noticed, had very pretty eyes and such interesting hair...

Ikkio looked up at Dyakida, watching her approach. What a funny adult, and very big - bigger than daddy... though daddy was pretty short. But this lady was bigger even than Mama. And green. With antennae! She moved so strangely, too, and her head kept tilting up.
"Ikkio!" she said, cheerfully, holding the sprite a little closer. She'd found the pretty chiming thing, and it was hers.

Dyakida grimaced. "Well, Ikkio." she said, speaking slowly and carefully. She did not like kids, but clearly this child and her sprite were involved, "What are you?"
Peyla chimed as a stiff muscle nipped at her. Ow. Owow!
Peyla's chiming helped Dyakida locate her, and she felt around, feeling soft, fluffy hair. That had to be the child. She crouched down, facing where she thought the child was. "I am Dyakida, and I think you have my sprite."

"Im... Ikkio." said Ikkio, looking up at the very tall lady. What a strange lady. She didn't look at her when she talked.
Why would that be? She watched Dyakida as she talked. An idea came to the small child.
Ikkio raised a hand, up, up, to wave in front of Dyakida's eyes. The lack of response was odd. She tried harder. Hmm!
So. The creature was a she and a sprite. Still a pretty. And hers. "Shes not yours! I found her!" said Ikkio, smiling smugly.

Dyakida was a bit taken aback. "Well Ikkio..." she began, forcing patience into her voice. The child had that infuriating quality that children did, where they used their innocence to twist logic into something it was not. "I was asking whether you were an Earthling or not, but that is immaterial." it didn't particularly matter, honestly. "But that is my sprite, right Peyla?"
Peyla chimed agreement. She was Dyakida'a yes!
"I recognize her chiming. It has a very particular tone. Now, give her back, please. And tell me where you found her." she added, as an afterthought.

Ikkio listened. She'd never heard or seen a sprite before today, but she didn't think she sounded special. She sounded like pretty bells, and Ikkio liked the sound.
Ikkio bit back a giggle, grinning. The lady sure used a lot of big words and spoke very carefully. She had to be smart. So Ikkio had to be smart too! You match smart with smart! Daddy was smart too. Mommy was smart, but not that smart. Mommy could be silly.
"Ohhh, I'm a shifter!" well sort of. Daddy was. Mommy had blue skin.
"But I found her." said Ikkio, waving her hand in front of the Alkidike's eyes, "I found her in a log. So now shes mine." she said, cuddling the sprite closer. That was how things worked.

Dyakida didn't feel the little hand that the girl waved in front of her dead eyes.
"Oh, a shifter?" she said, "Thats nice..." in reality she didn't actually care, though it at least meant that she wouldn't have to deal with this one's parents back in Emeka.
"But that's not how it works, Ikkio." what was Peyla doing in a log? Probably looking for something interesting - there was no trouble to make here. "You may have found her in the log, Ikkio, but she is still my sprite."
Peyla had been lost a while ago by the conversation and didn't think she was going to get the thread back. The sprite decided to focus on recovering from her scare.

"But it IS how it works!" protested Ikkio, pouting briefly. "Finders keepers!" She pet the sprite, a little roughly because of her age, but not too much so, "She was in trouble an' I found her an' saved her. You didn'd." Ikkio frowned up at the lady, "So I found her. So, shes mine."

"No..." Dyakida was becoming more exasperated by the moment. She didn't think she would ever be begging Aisha for children. They ran around everywhere underfoot, they were loud, and they had completely insufferable logic. She didn't remember being so insufferably obtuse when she was younger. Or anybody she knew. They hadn't always been reasonable, but she had. Surely, she had. She refused to believe otherwise. "You see, she was mine before, and she was mine when she was in the log, and now she's still mine. You can't just..." she took a deep breath to calm down, "Finders keepers only applies when the original owner wants it back." she explained with what felt like infinite, infinite patience.

Ikkio shook her head vigorously. "But its 'Finders Keepers, Losers Weepers!'" she chirped, "So someone has to lose it, and then they can't get it back, so they cry." She stroked the sprite gently, "So you can't get her back, because I found her!" she smiled victoriously. Her logic was special and perfect.

"No, girl. No." Dyakida was rapidly reaching the edge of her patience. "That isn't how it works at all." She said, gesturing firmly for the girl to give her her sprite, since clearly Peyla was injured in some way. Otherwise she'd be flying to her, or at least signalling. Peyla was alive, because Dyakida could hear the slight chimes that the sprite made when preoccupied, but was obviously held by the girl. Suddenly, Dyakida didn't want that to be the case anymore. "When someone loses something precious to them, it is not right to make them cry. If you find what is theirs, you should give it back." she said, "You found her, so you should give her back to me, because Peyla is mine." she hesitated, "And Peyla is a sprite, so she is her own thing too. She is both mine and hers." actually, maybe that was a little complicated for a child. "She likes me and she chose to stay around me and assist me. Thus, she is mine." Dyakida rephrased, wondering what the little brat had to say to that.
