Rosalie's days and Lyngvi's nights had started to blend together in her head -- free time swallowed by her job and her volunteer work, one weapon swapped for another, one type of hunting dropped for the next. The results showed on her face: bags under her eyes, a tightness around her mouth that maybe implied a hint of a headache. A twitch of hunger.

Had she remembered to eat dinner?

It was too late now. In uniform, in the alley behind the local Khol's, She was already caught up in the next find, a smear of green slime along the side of a dumpster, leading away down the alley. In its wake, it started to eat trails in metal and pavement alike --

HOPE TIHS WORKS!

Since meeting Sailor Gunn, Megiddo had doubled down on patrol. Maybe even tripled down. All it had taken to get her serious was the right incentive - the ardent hope that, if she was dedicated enough and good enough, Gunn might congratulate her on a job well done.

The page had meant to check over the front of the shopping center before moving on, but she sensed another order signature back in the alley. Lips pursed, she hopped the building and landed beside the other page, heels clicking against the pavement. "What've we got?" she asked, trying to hold herself to a serious standard of behavior that she thought Gunn might have appreciated, were she here to see it.

Her eyes tracked along the trail of slime, and Megiddo's face contorted into a scowl. "Gross," she said, noting the corrosiveness. If it had done that to the side of the dumpster, what would it do to something far finer, like her pitcher? "Youma?" she asked. Dumb question, she admonished herself. She needed to stop doing that, or there'd be hell to pay from Gunn.

"I'm Megiddo of Saturn," she offered to the older page. "Two against one sounds fun, if you want the help."

Lyngvi stood slowly as the other girl approached, shoulders gone stiff and back straight -- surprised, perhaps, by the approach of another signature. In her own nightly forays, usually she made an effort to avoid her ilk, to stick to herself, to skirt around those flickers of energy whether they be like her or other.

It was how she'd managed to avoid run-ins with the other side but -- it also meant that she'd avoided run-ins with her kin.

"...Lyngvi." This came slowly, fingers smoothing over the buttons on her corset in a nervous sort of way.

"Of Pluto, I think, and..." She hesitated looking to the marks on the ground, low to the earth, and then lifted her eyes to a higher point on the wall -- almost four feet up. The thing had to be at leas so big. "I don't know. It might be helpful. The slime is...corrosive."

"You think?" asked Megiddo, corners of her mouth quirking up just a hint. "That's what all the P-shaped sigils mean, isn't it? Pluto?" She didn't mean to be obnoxious, that was just the first question that came to mind. "Anyway," she continued, moving on from snark that she was already regretting just a little bit, "Nice to meet you."

Her eyes tracked along the wall, noticing how high the acid marks reached. The bear had been bigger, but as far as gelatinous blobs, or snails, or slugs, or extras from the set of Ghostbusters went, this thing looked pretty large. "Might need backup, in that case," She said, hefting her pitcher experimentally. "I've got not idea what corrosive slime would do to this. What's your weapon?"

Looking at Lyngvi, she didn't immediately see anything on her person that immediately screamed I'm useful for beating up negaversers. Megiddo sighed. "Why can't we ever get anything useful," she groaned, banging her pitcher against her hip as she set off after the slime trail. "Oh, sure, let me just beat these ruthless agents of chaos and corrosive youma over the head with a serving utensil, that'll sure save my life."

Lyngvi made a faint sound at that -- touched with just the faintest edge of amusement, breaking through her guarded exterior -- as she held up her left hand, adorned with an oversized resin ring. Black lotus petals surrounded a dark purple pearl at its center, and while it was pointy, it didn't look particularly strong.

"We make do with what we have. I just wish my gun didn't disappear when I switched into this ridiculous getup." She shook her head, hesitating just a moment, and then gesturing for Megiddo to follow. They could climb up onto the rooftops and, from there, could perhaps follow the traces of the creature further: corroded green that trailed off toward the east, and a distant scream --

Megiddo nodded at the ring, not impressed. At least, she thought, Lyngvi had almost laughed at her complaints. That had been the intent. "Like I said," she said, "It's like the big cosmic gamemakers in the sky want us to go and get ourselves killed." Seriously, they were about to go fight a corrosive blob armed with only a pitcher and a ring that looked like something from the Claire's catalogue.

"Yeah, sucks that everything disappears," the page agreed, following Lyngvi up a fire-escape ladder to the roof. "I keep checking my phone and having like, fifteen texts after patrol." Except wait, had she said gun? "You have a gun?" she asked. "What are you? Some kind of cop?" She was pretty sure they were breaking some kind of law by being up here, but maybe the other page didn't care when she was off-duty. Maybe she was a cool cop.

"Anyway, why not just take it off and set it aside before you power up? Doesn't only stuff that's actually like, on your body vanish?" Not that she'd done a ton of experimentation on the subject, but Megiddo had a scientific mind, and scientific minds needed answers. "Or is that, like, cheating. Are there phenomenal galactic forces that look at your glock and go nope.?"

The question hung in the air for a second, before the distant scream cut through the air. Megiddo tilted her head towards the source. "You hear that?" she asked, tucking her pitcher away into hammerspace. It was easier to run with it that way. "We should go that way," she said with a frown, starting to jog towards the edge of the room.

Lyngvi did hear it -- her head turning, sharply, to track down the source of the sound, almost relieved for the break in Megiddo's endless stream of question-and-answer. She nodded, quickly, starting in that direction as well. Her own ring stayed on her finger; no need to drive it away. Wasn't like she could break it --

They'd have to pause in a moment's silence, and by then, she'd had some time to think. Mulling over one question in particular to answer. Too much to answer them all.

"...If I started bringing a gun with me, wouldn't they do the same, in counter?" It wasn't aggressive or sarcastic, or sage -- it seemed like, maybe, she was asking an honest question. "Bringing a gun to a knife fight is always problematic, and put you at fault when someone gets shot."

Another muffled sound of contact, closer this time, and Lyngvi'd lead the way in that direction this time.

"Makes sense why you don't, then," nodded Megiddo, feeling sort of dumb. Between Gunn's rhetoric of kill or be killed, and Lyngvi's warning about escalation, she didn't know which side to go with... but she'd probably side with Gunn if things came down to the wire. Which meant countering about why it would be your fault when someone got shot.

"They kill people, though," said Megiddo, following Lyngvi towards the noise. "Like, without hesitation. If we ran into one of them tonight, they'd kill us without hesitation." Which was sort of... well, not exactly indicative of her exact experience. Mariposite hadn't tried to even lay a finger on her, but Serpentine had certainly been the aggressor. But she was invested in parroting Gunn's rhetoric for all it was worth. "And they've killed hundreds of civilians," she added, thinking of the scream they'd heard. Maybe another tonight?

"Shouldn't we be ruthless with them if they're ruthless with us?" she asked, but her naïveté was probably showing, between her young age and her page rank.

"If this thing is corrosive," she said, hearing the muffled noise. They were probably getting close - another couple rooftops and they ought to be on it. "What's our plan of attack? Hope for bricks and s**t to chuck at it?"

Lyngvi's reply was a faint shake of her head, trying to mull through the questions. She'd have to think on right and wrong when it came to carrying a gun in this uniform, but in general, she thought it was a bad idea. They already had the super powers -- the strength, the speed, the recovery -- and adding a firearm to that...

Well. She'd heard the stories of terrorists among them, and public opinion already swayed out of their favor. Best not to bring other problems into that world.

She didn't say any of it, though, because a step forward to the edge of the roof and they'd see the thing. Almost a perfect cube of green jello-like mush, it was straight out of D&D books, and currently pressed against the gate at the mouth of an alley. On the other side of that gate, trapped, was a girl of about sixteen with her dog. Nowhere for her to run: nothing but a brick wall behind her.

"...that might be a good plan. I don't want to touch it. If nothing else, we can distract..." She looked away, down around the corner, for some supply of items to throw, and saw nothing. Instead her eyes raised to the rooftops around them, and there was more success. Someone's full grilling set up, complete with a box of charcoal briquettes, just asking for them to take. She nodded toward it.

"I think this would serve." And she kicked into motion almost immediately, barely even waiting.

"Well," said Megiddo, looking down at the blob of evil Jell-o. A shiver ran down her spine - she hated gelatin at the best of times, and right now was hardly circumstances she'd call favorable. She swallowed dryly, trying to hide the tremor in her voice. "That's appetizing." Which was a lie. It did not look appetizing. It looked like it needed to be put down the garbage disposal and then killed with fire.

Well, she said to herself, What were you expecting? A giant slug?

Yes.

Well, there was a girl and a dog down there in need of rescue, and there was no backing out of this now that she'd come all this way with Lyngvi. Besides, being scared of Jell-o was totally irrational, was it not? Except it moved like you couldn't trust it and that sucked.

"Okay, yes," she said, following the other page into motion. Megiddo scooped up an armful of charcoal briquettes and ran to the edge of the roof. Swinging her arm back, she chucked two in rapid succession towards the blob. Maybe in another minute or two, she'd go down into the alley...

For now, she was happy to stay right where she was. It seemed safer.

She threw another briquette. Distract, Lyngvi had said... Megiddo just hoped that wasn't synonymous with "make it climb the walls."

They could only hope that the thing couldn't climb walls, because if it could -- they were rather screwed. This wasn't a terribly tall building, and if it could move vertically, it wouldn't take long for it to make it sway up to them.

One of the briquettes hit home, right on target, but with a sickening schlorp it was sucked into the cube, floating in the center of its yellow-green mass. A second joined it after a moment, and Lyngvi froze, staring as it swayed, wobbled, its surface stretching and morphing and then resettling. Oddly, despite the fact that it was an eyeless cube, now they somehow had the impression that it was looking at them.

"Hm. That seemed..ineffective." It was a casual enough statement, but there was a true flicker of worry behind it. If it just ate whatever they threw at it, how were they supposed to kill it? Especially since, as it shifted and came toward them at an impossibly slow crawl, the briquettes started to break apart in its core. Corrosive.

"...at least the girl can run?"

Silverah
If you have an idea you wanna use, go for it; otherwise, I do have a plan for how to kill it. XD

"I don't trust Jell-o," said Megiddo meekly, staring down at the blob, teeth on edge. "Never have." The thing knew they were there, despite being an utterly featureless blob - she was certain of it. She froze, another charcoal briquette poised above her head, about to let go. There didn't seem to be much point now - not when it was so ineffective (she thanked Lyngvi for the descriptor).

"Yeah," she said, glancing hastily as the imperiled civilian fled into the night. At least they'd don that part of their jobs.

With a splorch, the gelatinous blob glommed onto the wall and, its mass shuddering, began to inch towards them. Megiddo lowered the briquette and glanced around the rooftop, looking for something more destructive - maybe the tenants kept their grill lighter outdoors?

"I swear to god," said the page, backing away from the edge of the roof. "If this is how I die, I will be so ******** pissed."

"I agree." Lyngvi paused to stare down at the thing as it slowly rolled up the wall, picking up bits of brick and dust and dirt as it went, the bright, luminescent green of its body darkening slowly toward a brown sludge.

"...I whole-heartedly agree." This she said as she backed away from the edge of the roof as well, looking sharply around them for anything else that could be used as a weapon -- and her eyes lit, at last, on a long coil of hose, carefully gathered up into a neat circle. She took off toward it at a dash, to screw it into the water at the wall, hoping that the pipes weren't frozen.

And, indeed, as she pulled the trigger, nothing happened. For a moment, there was silence. It sputtered, hissed.

The creature rounded up onto tho roof in front of them.

And the water kicked on.

She breathed a sigh of relief as a rush of water poured into the youma. This, too, was absorbed into its body, but as it was, the creature slowed. It swelled, growing as it struggled to contain the flow of liquid into it, struggling to hold its shape, and all at once it burst.

At least it was dead. They could be satisfied with that. But as it exploded outward, both pages [and the surrounding buildings] would be splattered with both green jello-y goop and water. Anywhere it hit skin it tingled, growing into a slow burn...

Silverah
PostPosted: Sat Jan 04, 2014 7:38 pm

When the youma burst, Megiddo flung her arms up over her head out of instinct and got a pair of soaked blouse sleeves for her trouble. She realized almost immediately that it wasn't just water that the youma had expelled. Her arms tingled at first, but as she lowered them and looked around, she started to feel the acid.

"Augh!" she exclaimed, stomping over to Lyngvi in her now-squelching boots. "Do you feel that?" She needed to get this stuff off and she needed it off yesterday. Megiddo's eyes flitted to the hose still in the other page's hand, and she'd sat through the start-of-term lab safety lecture enough times to know the precautions here.

"Hose me down, okay?" she asked, flinging her arms out and standing with her feet shoulder-width apart. "And then I'll get you. ******** hell. Jell-o is ******** disgusting. Who looks at that and says, yes, it looks like radioactive waste, let's put bits of pineapple in it and eat it?"

There was a glob of green on one of Lyngvi's cheeks -- fine, at first, except that it grew it a tingle and then a sting and, with a rather undignified squeal, she swiped it away. Of course, then she'd realize what it was: not a bee, nor a mosquito, but youma slime, and more of it splattered up and down her body. Understanding dawned and, immediately, she turned the hose on Megiddo.

It was cold as hell, and the pressure too high to be comfortable inside, but she let the water linger on the other page for a long moment before turning in on herself as well.

Worry about hypothermia later...
