It's a thread revival! To the Character Analysis thread, which was a reinterpretation of a very old thread Rath had back in 2006.
Except this time it's scheduled to have weekly updates every Sunday just like Best/Worst so it'll have new topic every week. Additionally, the character of the week will be from a different game every week as well, rather than switching games every three characters (so if you haven't played a certain entry, you'll not have to wait as long for one you have played!). The order will be simpler: FE13 downwards.
So please, discuss to your hearts content what you think of the character of the week as a unit, as a character, as they develop in supports, which supports you like for them and which you don't (with respect to gameplay and character), etc...
Also bear in mind that the purpose of this thread is to generate Fire Emblem-related discourse and dialogue for a guild about Fire Emblem regularly, and so it's highly encouraged for people to not just express their own thoughts and opinions once and be done with it, but ideally interact with what others are saying in this thread!
The first character of the week is Chrom!

Chrom is great. His growth rates are awesome, he's a great unit throughout the entire story mode. Aether is the icing on the cake (Rightful King for +10% activation too!). He can be a dodge tank, then heal off with Aether, while also dishing out insane damage. Then he gets Falchion, only as strong as an Iron Sword at first, but CANNOT break. Then it gets amped to 15 damage later on with the free +20 HP for the turn should you choose to use it instead of attack.
He's not without his flaws however. One is how useless he becomes compared to other units in post-game. Any of the children from the future have better stats/skills given proper preparations. Chrom is extremely limited to skills too. Sniper/Bow Knight give less than great skills. Paladin/Great Knight aren't too fun either imo. All males get Dread Fighter and those skills. You end up with Aether/Rightful King/Aggressor/Limit Breaker/+10 Resistance/Aegis/Support Block to play with. No Galeforce, Renewal, Counter, Lifetaker. His skill-pool isn't awful, but it can be frustrating for me.
Another issue is his abyssmal magic/resistance growths. You almost HAVE to use items to train these stats. I've gone through all 30 levels of Dread Fighter and only got +1 or 2 in Magic and +4 in Res. So it's difficult to use him as a Dread Fighter...
Worst of all, there are many maps where you HAVE to use him. Even in post-game. That can be extremely frustrating when you have better units that have to sit out now.
Onto his character personality. He's pretty chill overall, pretty righteous, predictably so. It's neat to see My Unit interact with him. But after playing through the game a few times I realized how stale he really is. He is almost without flaw. All his decisions are the generic "good guy" choice. He is a great leader, he is strong, fast, smart, attractive, he has everything going for him. I got the vibe that Ike wasn't that smart. Eliwood's weakness was that he was abnormally kind-hearted and struggled to kill soldiers at times. Eirika was like this too. Hector was headstrong and rash. Micaiah was naive. Ephraim was not interested in history, and liked to fight. Not a warmonger, but he liked to fight, and he didn't like to study. All these lords were pretty great all-around, but they had some flaw or another. Chrom doesn't. At least I didn't see any. He seems to excel in everything, well, except Magic.. He's not super talkative, but not non-social either. You could call him naive maybe, but it's more of a choice that he wants to help people and knows the risk.

Chrom, one of the main characters of FE13. I'll admit that I like him, but there are both good and bad things about him. Here's a personal break down of him.
Starting Off: Chrom starts off as a level 1 Lord. He has a Rapier and the Falchion. The rapier is nice but only has 35 uses. Falchion while having infinite uses, is an inferior Iron Sword. Once Chrom can use something higher than Iron Sword I would suggest going to the better weapons since the weapon also only counts as an E rank sword.
Growths: For the most part Chrom has great growths. His default res growth is 25%. Heck all but his Paladin reclass have 25% rest growth and the Paladin one is 30%. That low res growth is a glaring flaw in his growths.
Reclass Options: Great thing about Awakening is that Chrom doesn't ahve a set promotion time. He reclasses I'm 50/50 on. I like the Cavalier option, but I'm rather confused at the Archer option he has. His promotion to Great Knight makes him a walking Paladin since he gets Lances upon promotion.
Endgame: At the end of the day, Chrom doesn't look that almightly. He loses some flair when his own daughter Lucina looks better depending on her mother. The Exalted Falchion is great and it has infinite uses. Lord characters usually should be able to stand out, and he doesn't.
Overall: He's an ok lord, but only ok. I give him a 7.5/10

I could copypasta what I said in the last thread, but my opinions of Chrom have shifted a bit. Not too much, though.
I think that having the main lord's signature weapon available from the beginning (albeit in a weakened form) is a fun change up. Chrom's falchion has unlimited uses and is effective against dragons, but it isn't very powerful (until it gets its exalted upgrade, of course). So you are dealing with a weapon that has perks, but is not always preferable to better swords. Like his lordly rapier. His res can be a bit iffy, but overall his growths are pretty good and a notch above your average lord, though the growths in Awakening are higher overall. Making the Lord class a special class but still providing reclass options, unlike in FE11 and 12, means that Chrom is not depraved of reclassing benefits that other characters have, and has just as much potential to growth (outside of individual perks, of course). As Mel said, he also doesn't have a set promotion time, which eliminates the trouble that some lords have with promoting too late. His reclass options might not lend himself as well to postgame shenanigans, and there are far better class trees. But for the story mode and the beginning of the game, Chrom is a strong asset, and a good lord.
My running chrommentary has concluded by this point, but I still think of Chrom in largely the same way as a character. I think that Chrom definitely falls into the more impulsive, louder side of the FE lord spectrum. I think he had the potential to be far more interesting than he was, but during the first half of the game he is interesting, at least to me. Angry Chrom is Angry. A lot of people don't like this about Chrom, but I think that having a lord who is more emotionally similar to his warmongering father than his beloved and peace-preaching sister is interesting and not laid on too strong. We see him do terrible things that he sees as just, and we eventually see him question if he is worthy of his sister's ideals at all. He's a very angry man that is, for a while, incapable of seeing enemies as people like his sister does. Chapter 10 is pretty much the Chrom show, where everything comes crashing down and he realizes how terrible he is. But it's not like Chrom is incapable of compassion or completely irredeemable. His kindness in the scene where he finds out Lucina's identity is unmistakable. It's a great scene, and it's not like it comes out of nowhere. He is a very trusting man, after all. Perhaps moreso than he should be.
Too bad he's also dumb as a brick! Man does he have some really stupid support conversations. And MU cockblocks any serious character development he could have had, causing him to confront future conflicts with the all encompassing "FRIENDSHIP IS AWESOME!" excuse. It should have been with his daughter that he realized that he can be worthy of his sister's ideals, not with stupid dumb MU.
Awakening, you didn't know what a great thing you had until it was all gone. There was this great potential to be edgier with morals in a way that FE can be great with, but Awakening's toothlessness got in the way.
Still, better to have that potential then to never take any risks at all, I guess.

Chrom is… I kinda feel for IS at this point because every time they make a new lord, for the most part they all have to fit into a certain mold. The main lord is a good person in such a way that makes it increasingly difficult to create characters that can stand out as entirely their own, I think. And you could maybe say Chrom’s character suffered from that.
He’s blue-haired-good-guy-lord-that’s-stern-and-can-get-angry. I like that he’s thrown into a position he never saw himself occupying because the death of a relative (sound familiar?) and I like his honest anger over Emmeryn. It’s too bad that after Gangrel, he’s mostly done developing as a character (the stuff with discovering Lucina is his daughter from the future helps a little bit though, I think) and the Valm Arc ******** starts to be followed by the All About MU Arc ********. But his relationship to his dead sister (until she wasn’t; UGH – things I can’t even) is what really makes Chrom as a character, I think. He leads the shepherds to protect the country his sister has finally made peaceful and prosperous after their daddy’s rule. He does whatever he must to try and rescue her from Gangrel because she’s so great. And then he aspires with MU to collectively live up to her standards as a leader (which I don’t think he does because he’s such a different person, but that doesn’t make him a bad leader – just a different one). And I think I’d like Chrom a lot more if he was the same character he is but in a different Fire Emblem game given how Awakening takes things that seem good and shits on them. It makes it harder to really care about Chrom’s characterization after Gangrel is out of the picture (and before he comes back because UGH this game).
As a unit, he’s good enough, in-game. His starting skill of Dual Strike+ is awesome and will always be awesome. And if you keep him as a lord the entire time he’ll eventually get Aether and a more frequent Aether with Rightful King and that’s good, if not something to rely on. He can also totally utilize his Cavalier options from reclassing (shame about Archer) depending on what you need and it may be worth considering since a Paladin’s Strength, Skill, Speed, AND Defense boost to stats sure beats just Speed and Luck. His growths are all-around solid, he has a personal weapon with infinite uses that gets a huge upgrade towards the end that also slays dragon units really easily. Supports-wise, he can use MU and Frederick to do what he needs to do until his wife of your choice is available. He’s a reliable, good sword unit with very impressive offenses paired up thanks to Dual Strike+ helping get in four hits instead of two or three when it can matter, but he’s not going to break the game in half the way certain other things (read: GF and dark magic) do. Can’t complain about him as a unit. He’s very good.
Post-game, it’ll be more regrettable that one of his reclass options is Archer which pretty much offers nothing he’d want but between Limitbreaker, Dual Strikes+, Dual Guard+, Aether, Rightful King, Luna, and possibly Aggressor, he’s not lacking for skills to make a viable set of them, and he is forced when your children characters are generally superior and taking center stage, but he can always pair up with MU, his children who are probably really good, or his wife who should have Gale Force. Dual Strikes+, Dual Guard+, Aggressor, and Limitbreaker can all be utilized in the support position too, so it’s not too big of a deal.
Totally agree with Tiki about the potential for some development further in the game with Lucina, but whatever. He’s unfortunately the main lord who gets hijacked by MU.

Here we are, We Know it's Too Late. Hoping only to find some closure..! Silently waiting, Hear the calling..! Look into the wanting eyes, my Cherished! As a Character, he's Sigurd. Enough said. He's pretty generic, but then again so is every other lord besides his daughter and Micaiah.
As a unit, he's pretty mediocre as a melee-combatant. However, he REALLY shines as an Archer or Sniper-- where he can go full in with Double Bow/100% Dual Strike shenanigans. He gets the excellent Aether/Luna combo for Procing (and really, that's what Archers in Awakening need: Procs), has a faire for Bows [which, really, Chrom's best use is "turret".] and the coveted Dual Strike+, but since magic combat with him is essentially balls, he's not a good sweeper, unlike Lucina. Does lack Galeforce, but as an offense, he's a fairly great unit.

The similarities between Sigurd and Chrom DO make me question how much I like Sigurd since he's one of my favorite lords and I don't care much about Chrom. I chalk it up to Sigurd's story really impacting me whereas Chrom is stuck in Awakening's story which is... Awakening's story.
And you're referring explicitly to post-game, I presume. I know Apotheosis shenanigans are your thing. Sniper's supposed to be a lot better in Lunatic+ too, but it's difficult to imagine it being an ideal class under any other circumstances.

Here we are, We Know it's Too Late. Hoping only to find some closure..! Silently waiting, Hear the calling..! Look into the wanting eyes, my Cherished! Sniper's great in Lunatic(+) main game [Normal/Hard Main game likely won't see Chrom out of his base class set, and if it does, he's probably strong enough to steamroll regardless (because really, lol Normal and Hard)] and in postgame.
Range 3 is awesome-- the ability to engage and eliminate key threats without any risk of counter attack cannot be underestimated.
Sniper only really has issues if you're becoming too reliant on EP. [The real issue with Awakening Snipers is who your base Archers/Snipers are. Virion is a bad character, and Noire's a caster.]
I didn't say a few things I want to say about Chrom storywise, but...:
First off, one thing I really like about Chrom is that he acknowledges some of the things he does aren't necessarily smart or safe decisions, but he flat out refuses to go against his morals. What he says to Tharja was pretty awesome. ...Then there's his ending, which I do enjoy, even if Chrom is no Lloyd Irving. He calls Robin's plan out as wrong immediately when the cost was levied. That takes some serious balls, and I'd say is quite admirable. [That said, he's no Lloyd Irving. He doesn't get in Robin's way should Robin still go thru with that plan.] Cue my burning hatred for Robin's ending in every way.
Support wise: I enjoyed... exactly none of his romantic supports. Oh look, another Sigurd parallel. Kid's got an OTP of mine, but him? Nopenopenope. Worst of the bunch is Female Robin though. Blech. Chrom/Sully would be great, but that S-rank, again, nope [And Chrom/Sully really don't seem like a romantic couple. At all.] Sumia's got the "My Love..." Voice quip. BURN. IN. HELL. Olivia -would- have the best supports, but her's can't be seen. Maribelle's is just there, and feels kinda awkward [Even if Maribelle!Lucina is the queen of sweeper]
His friendship supports on the other hand are all great. His interactions with Male Robin in particular are great, and drop some foreshadowing to Morgan as well as touch on his "This is who I am" deal.
His support with Lucina is touching, and covers a huge deal with her character: that she's wrong in her belief that she doesn't belong. (I've seen someone say that that's Chrom's naivete showing up, but again, I've never seen a canon-backed argument that she's remotely right about needing to leave- she just believes it, doesn't make it right [and it'd be hurting her anyways].)
Now we are here, We know its too late! Hoping only to find some closure, Silently waiting, Hear the calling! Look into the wanting eyes, My Cherished!

It's totally unnecessary and frankly it's kind of getting on my nerves.

Chrom is the only one who I've ever compared against Lloyd.
Lloyd isn't a standard to be measured against exactly, but at the same time, just because they're from different games/series doesn't change anything when comparing characters storywise.
Both Chrom and Lloyd face scenarios where they've got a close friend [possible love interest] who is about to do something that is, with all information given (at that moment), a good thing, but will result in their death. Both say nay. Lloyd is active in his "Not letting this happen", Chrom only voices objections- No actions are taken.
I'm not going to hold it entirely against Chrom [since being "Not as awesome of a hero as Lloyd" is like saying "Toddler is not as good of a boxer as Mike Tyson"], but at the same time the comparison is still present...

As I consider MU's plan the right one, I'll not comment on that because it's very much up to interpretation, but I can appreciate Chrom voicing his feelings about the notion - it's a quality he shares with MU, but I think their supports are actually a better example of Chrom sticking to what he believes in (but I'll say more on that later). Most lords would though - it's kind of part of the template.
And if you're concerned with efficiency Chrom does very well main game in the Cavalier class tree as well if you have the Second Seal to spare.
Supports wise I'm unimpressed with all of his romantic supports for the most part. I like and favor Chrom/Sumia, but I like it more for everything hinting towards them in the game rather than their actual supports, which is irksome to acknowledge (which isn’t to say I outright dislike the supports). FeMUxChrom changes the context and dynamics of their relationship for so much of the game, which is really interesting, but you have to like it more than the intimate (but not romantic) relationship they have with each other if you pair them with other people, which I prefer (I also prefer MaMU, so it isn't an issue for me anyway, but still). Plus I quite enjoy the FeMU and Lucina support conversations when FeMU isn't Lucina's mother, which really capitalizes on them not being related. I mildly enjoy Chrom/Maribelle’s supports to an extent, but purely for Maribelle’s behavior in them and not because of Chrom. And Olivia shouldn’t be a wife option for him at all, as far as I’m concerned, what with how they handle it. I do actually really like the supports Chrom has with Sully. That A support especially is really good. The S support is awkward but a lot of S supports in this game are. Figures the one marriage option whose supports I generally enjoy all the way through would be the one that doesn’t offer Galeforce to the kids. That said, I still prefer Chrom/Sumia as a pairing, I just get to that point for reasons other than the actual supports they have, primarily. But I DO quite enjoy parts of their supports as well. I think the pie thing is stupid, yes, but there’s no mention of it at all in the C support which is really quite sweet and a good little support and topics come up in every support after that other than just pie. The pie thing does weaken it though, I think, unfortunately. But just that C support alone seems to allude to their potential as a couple (and without pie!) which I greatly appreciate. ******** pies. But between the good points of their supports, the interactions they have outside of the supports like Sumia’s rescue cutscene and when she punches him in the face and, oh I don’t know, the video that plays before the title screen for the game with her holding his baby for ******** sake. They’re certainly selling it, and I’ll buy it.
His non romantic supports, I find to be much better as well. Chrom/MaMU is an especially good example of Chrom following his convictions in spite of the problems that could arise from that, which is lovely (and they got to promote the ‘bonds’ shtick of the game). One of the best supports in the game, I’d even go so far to say (certainly miles ahead of the mess with feMU). And Chrom/Frederick makes Frederick look ridiculous (because he is) but I’m glad naked Chrom is a thing as opposed to it not being a thing, so I’m happy those supports exist as they do. Which reminds me! Love ‘dat shot of Chrom in the swim trunks. Gotta work to make video games equal-opportunity when it comes to sexploitation. Chrom/Gaius supports show good development with him, too, in the A support. Chrom/Lissa and Chrom/Vaike, I’m mixed on. Chrom/Vaike is just meant for humor/doesn’t go anywhere with the characters, but Chrom/Lissa has him condemning Lissa for doing something dangerous when he’s in the reverse situation with Chrom/MaMU but insists on his actions, so there’s some light hypocrisy there. He’s also somewhat insensitive in the supports until the A, too. But the support does show him caring about his sister in this roundabout, after-the-fact way that he does (Lissa/Stahl shows he misses her birthday but makes it up to her; another good example of their dynamic). I have mixed reactions to his relationship to Lissa. He cares about her, sure, but little sister is clearly less important than big sister.

I’m going to move on from what I said, so I apologize if I lost my cool. So let me drop my opinion on Chrom while I’m on here anyways.
Let’s talk about our buddy Chrom here. As a unit he’s actually not half bad his base stats are HP: 20 Str:7 Mag:1 Skl: 8 Spd: 8 luck: 5 Def: 7 Resistance: 1 but only as a level one lord. He starts out with an E rank in sword weapons. The only weapons he’ll be carrying with him as the bronze sword his own Falchion which has unlimited uses. But like the point that’s been made here already, It’s slightly less accurate and not as good as the other swords that you can gather in the game. The positive thing about it is that it’s great against dragon foes and does that extra bonus damage to them. The only time where it will start to see improvements when it gets an upgrade to the Exalt Falchion and that really starts to play a role when Chrom becomes a better class. Chrom will do stronger damage to foes with it in the later parts of the game as he rises.
But overall, I say he tends to get the job done fairly well. He does have dual strike which is useful when it does activate. His class options are fairly limited however. Lord/Great lord, Cavalier/Paladin/ Great Knight, Archer/Sniper/Bow Knight. Would I have liked to see more options available? Sure it’d be great. But for what Chrom has for going him I think it’s manageable. I found very little reason in class changing him into the archer/sniper class. But that’s because I haven’t played Lunatic+ nor do I plan on doing so at all. I think I generally find him well… slightly more efficient as a mount rather than the other classes. As he advances to Great lord he does gain Aether and Rightful King which are both fantastic skills to have altogether. As a paladin he’ll have access to Aegis, the only potential skill I’d say is good for him as a Bow knight is Bowbreaker. And last the Dread Fighter class gives him Aggressor and an extra resistance +10.
Now onto his personality. Chrom is the type that believes in what he believes in which isn’t really bad. He can be at times a bit TOO trusting which everyone knows what I'm talking about. I personally feel that Chrom actually had potential to be an interesting lord. It’s particularly in the Valm arc where any sign of his character development is completely tossed away. And really, it’s a shame because I actually do like him quite a bit in the first 11 chapters of the game. Especially in chapter 10(Still one of my favorite chapters of FE13) he just witnessed his sister’s death a chapter ago, even though it’s off screen death he saw IT happen. As what Tiki said, Chrom starts to express his anger and he’s really faced with blaming himself on what happened. And he’s conflicted with what are his options at this point? I just wished they’d explore with that a bit more and I think he’d be a much more interesting lord. It’s just so disappointing in the Valm arc. The scene with finding about his real daughter is Lucina is still rather emotionally touching though that’s really about it.
Marriages conversations however.. Are generally uninteresting in my opinion. There’s only two pairings that I legitimately like. Chrom x Sully and Chrom x Sumia. I actually like how the relationship is portrayed between Sully and Chrom. I like that both of them feel very natural when they’re around each other. Of course in their support conversation they both knew each other when they were kids. And you know what? I thought it was a nice flashback to for them reminisce. But I think I like the respect they show for one another. Chrom is a bit of a dunderhead in the supports, but I think how Sully acts at the same time sort of makes it interesting. Yeah, yeah the childhood friends relationship tends to be done plenty of times in other stuff, but I think this one kind of works in a way. I like the Sumia and Chrom more as an actual pairing rather than the conversations themselves. Why does the conversation revolve around freaking PIES? Though at the same time I’d be lying if it didn’t amuse me but still it‘s pretty dumb. The pairing itself is actually kind of nice. As I’ve said with the other pairings, I don‘t really care for them. The other supports are actually fairly enjoyable for the most part. He’s not my favorite lord In the series, but I do like lots of aspects about Chrom.

Sorry for not updating sooner but FD was very busy having a simply FEFabulous weekend and this is my first free moment to get around to this. Darlings, it is a new week and so there is a new subject for this thread.
That's right. It's time.
The Marth-a-palooza is upon us (not to be confused with the Marcia-palooza or tha Martha-palooza)!
Now because of how the game's switch every week in descending order, this week would normally be just a FE12 unit with next week being an FE11 unit, but having Marth from two different games dominate two different weeks would be redundant. And then there's the stuff about FE1 and FE3 being remade in FE11 and FE12, so there's obviously a lot of Marths to go around. Take the Marthapalooza as a festival for all iterations of Marth (that actually ARE Marth, LUCINA). Talk about Marth in any and all contexts appropriate (including SSB if you so choose)!
The Marthapalooza happens but once, and once only. So take the week to talk about all things Marth!

Marth. I do have a lot to say about him. I'm sure like many FE players today, I first knew of him through Super Smash brothers Melee. I developed my own head-canon for what his personality and back story were because I couldn't really make sense of the story I read on his trophy. I don't know why, but I was instantly drawn to him.
I pictured him a cold, calculating tactician who had a hotheaded student (Roy.) The two of them bickered but they were unstoppable when they worked together as partners in battle. It sounds like a great story until I figured out that Marth and Roy aren't part of the same game!
I didn't see the Fire Emblem version of Marth until FE 11. I actually liked FE 11, even though I'm a veteran of all the other localized FE's. While I realize FE 11 was essentially translating the dated dialogue of FE 1, I got to really know Marth throughout the story.
I really like him. As both a unit and as a character. His rapier destroys things, and then later on, Falchion = a non-limited weapon I can wreck dragons with. Tell me that's not awesome.
Character-wise, he's everything a leader should be. He is a good tactician (just not a cold and ruthless one), but he shows that he cares about his forces in general (the speech to his troops before they retake his homeland comes to mind.)
While he may not be as developed character-wise as the later Lords, Marth was the first and I think that's very special.
