Delmaria stood up at the top of the beach, the cold wind fluttering her water-sodden wings. They felt unnaturally heavy and droopy when they were wet, as if even moving would damage them. They stuck to her body, but she could feel that they were nearing semi-dryness; the place where they touched her pelt was getting closer and closer to her normal body temperature.
With a sigh, she tried using the muscles in her shoulders to move them. One popped up, slightly wrinkled from the position it had been in. There was a short tear near the swallowtailed portion of it, where the water had led an ill-meaning crab to her side as she lay in the cool, comforting shallows. The wound had been excruciatingly painful, and the area around the healing cut was stained a brownish purple. She hadn't known her wings could bleed that much; the vessels were so tiny that they didn't even color the membrane.
Beginning to get slightly bored of just standing there and waiting for her wings to dry, salt-crusted though they would eventually be once more, Del eyed the forest beyond the tall sedge and wild rose bushes. She had only been in there a few times, and she wasn't about to go into a shady place while her wings were still drying, but she absently wondered if, perhaps, today something would come out of it. Her family had visitors every once and a while, and every day that they stayed away, the greater the chances grew that somebody would show up. That was how Delmaria saw it, anyway: everything happens for a reason. Though her faith was shaken sometimes, she and her family always returned to their motto. Destiny had plans for them... And stuck on the beach as she was, it was bound to find her someday. Maybe somebody like her would come along and tell her why she couldn't fly... Or why, even though she had the tail of a fish, she couldn't breathe underwater. All her curiosities needed explaining.
