Cranium. Craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaanium. Cranium. Crain, Tonestue and Anopticyte called him. Idly, Retinadeath groomed her daughter Cataracta's wings with her teeth as she pondered her white son. She made no secret of her distaste for unattractive children. Attractiveness was, after all, a measure of fitness, at least to some extent, and ever since Plamen had first begun his habit of whisking away whatever of their children didn't match Retinadeath's rather stringent definitions of beauty, she'd been rather soured on anyone of her children whose colors were complementary.
She supposed, in retrospect, she'd been a bit...harsh on Cranium. After all, the foal she was now grooming had blue legs with orange flames, which was the exact color combination she found so unattractive on Cranium. But he was so...thick! He'd been an eager recruit, sure enough, but he was such a dimwitted boy. This was enough of a problem--obedience, yes, the Death General liked obedience, but stupidity? More of an issue--but what was worse was his interactions with other members of the herd. Saltic said that Cranium made him nervous, and ever since Retinadeath had sent him on a short mission with Azura, the hound had been complaining that the boy got on her nerves. Azura was one of Retinadeath's favorite soldiers. No way was she going to let one of her boys get away with raising her favorite soldier's hackles. What was worse, she'd managed to rub Tonestue the wrong way.
That really was the last straw. Tonestue was an adopted child, and thus treasured very highly by the odd lyra. She was also, now that Ambrosia was gone, Retinadeath's oldest daughter, and the one who'd, by and large, raised Cranium herself. The fact that he'd managed to get her upset while she was pregnant? Was definitely a black mark on his record. Something had to be done about him. It was time for him to sink or swim.
She pushed Cataracta along with a nudge of her head and strode off to find her wayward child. "Cranium!" she barked into the clearing where they held their battle practices.

Cranium had managed to sour his relationship with his mother over his uncertain feelings about his 'adoptive' sister's pregnancy and relationship with a new stallion. He didn't understand why it made him so angry and uneasy he'd even caused Azura to be suspicious of his real intelligence. Fool he was. But Khnum the stallion his 'sister' was having foals with didn't seem so special... he was nothing just an alcor lyra hybrid. He probably wasn't all that smart either. Tony wasn't his real sister or even blood related to him and she's take care of him more than his own mother he craved that kind of attention from.
He'd come to the training grounds to vent some frustration, he was far more savage today if anything. He always made sure to conceal his intelligence as best he could. Yet today he hoped he unnerved those around him, though he doubted anyone cared really he wasn't a threat after all for his stupidity all things considered. It wasn't long until he heard her call. He'd been waiting after all.
His mother probably had a useless errand for him to do that had nothing to do with anything. He could imagine how ridiculous it could be. She never came to see him like she did when she doted on her other children. He was after all the scorned creature and she had new children to play with and dote on. One day though.. one day he'd impress her.
"General," he replied with the respect she deserved, though he added in his signature slur as though the large word was hard to say. The Stallion had halted his training and came into her view approaching his mother only pausing the respected distance away the rest of the soldiers did.

How, how had she, a perfectly respectable mare of great intelligence, managed to produce an offspring who was so...dense? Well, at least Cranium respected her, unlike his ridiculous father. That, at least, was a blessing. He was a twit, but an acceptable one. Rather like Saltic, actually--though Saltic's ignorance stemmed from arrogance, and Cranium's was from slamming his head against trees when he was a child. Actually, scratch that--slamming his head against a tree repeatedly only proved that he'd been stupid in the first place. Retinadeath sighed. She'd definitely gone wrong somewhere during pregnancy with this one. Maybe one of his brothers had kicked him in the womb. She certainly remembered one of them--she suspected it was Anopticyte--being particularly feisty in there.
Well, that ship had already sailed. The only thing now was to test whether he was strong enough to survive in the world. To see if it was all worth it to train him and put up with him in spite of his interactions with people she liked rather more than he. "Cranium, I have a task for you. And I realize it may not sound very important, but you must trust me on this one. Very important. I need you to fetch me something." Fetch quests were cheap, and exactly what she'd done months ago with Osteocyte when she wanted to get rid of him, but quite frankly, it was the only thing Retinadeath could think of. It was harmless, it was easy, and it meant that he wouldn't get into trouble and mess up the plans of the herd if he messed up. Reconnaissance missions were far more fallible, and there was no way she was going to trust him with one of those. No, for now, he would just have to do humiliating, menial tasks. Good thing he wouldn't even notice it.

She must wonder how she ever raised him, how dim he was smashing his head against trees when he was young. How amusing it was, wouldn't it be once she realized he was the cleverest of them all? Granted he's have to win the favour of the rest of his siblings and the up and coming prince.
Even if the queen wanted more than just one competitor for her successor spot, Cranium had a feeling Belenus wouldn't let anyone get it. In which case his position was clear, support the prince or get removed or worse killed once the other stallion took power. But it wasn't going to happen any time soon, Belenus seemed content waiting for his mother to die. Or at least having a longer turn in her spot.
Oh yes His mother was speaking another fetch quest. He wasn't overly surprised with her choice, however the quicker he could get it done the better. Cranium gave his mother full attention occasionally letting his gaze shift to other things but then immediately returned it to Retinadeath as she spoke. A derpy nod was his response "Yes General," he paused "What I get, what I get?" he asked her in broken speech.

Now, Retinadeath was many things. Cunning, loyal, brave, strong, dextrous, determined. Creative? Not nearly as much as she liked to think of herself as being. It wasn't really a good sign that the first thing she thought of was a tuft of algiedi fur. But it wasn't like that was going to work, was it? She'd picked that for Osteocyte because they hadn't had any contact with Algiedi yet, and neither of them were quite convinced that they actually existed. But now? There were, like, three algiedi in the herd. It wasn't a long way to go, it wasn't humiliating, it wasn't mythological. It was just pathetic. So now she found herself trying to find something more difficult, more dangerous.
Without thinking, she opened her mouth and let her tongue decide. "Find me the skulls of an eagle, a wolf, and a serpent, strung with the bones of a pike." ...Cranium had bones all over his body, of course a skull was immediately what she thought of! But Ret closed her mouth and assumed a haughty, self-confident expression. Even as she did, her brain was screaming at her. Send Cranium to find the bones of four carnivores? Was she nuts?! How would he survive? How would he even know what they looked like.
If he survives, he is worthy of re-evaluation, she decided.Ice_Dragon_Demon Sbande can help with skulls xD

Gods his mother wasn't creative in the least. Granted though she didn't know about his higher intelligence as he liked it. No one needed to know about that until he deemed it so. With Belenus coming back with many children Blood might find herself threatened. Then again you never knew with the crazy queen. She was never all there in appearance similar to him.
But obediently he nodded to his mother, then toward the end paused and asked what each creature was as though he didn't know. How could he he'd never been out of the herd after all, anything bad he just smashed it after all. Didn't matter what it was. Not that he didn't take to looking at the structure of the creature once everyone left to learn it's weaknesses.
Honestly it wouldn't be too hard, but if he came back too quickly she might question him. He's have to find something to bide his time until perhaps his mother got worried? Like that would happen he laughed inside his own mind. Could be worse he supposed, the situation inside the shadow herd may change by the time he gets back. He'd have to be careful.
"I gots it," he paused "D.. Death G..General" he stumbled over the words and bowed low to his mother. "W..Will find them." he added eagerly.

She must've done something wrong with her life. The Signs were punishing her. Nnng. Seriously? The kid didn't know what any of these things were? Well, it wasn't like there were a lot of wolves in the forest, that was true, and it wasn't like anyone had probably ever taken him fishing...but seriously. Bah. The boy would have to learn sometime, and if he didn't return, well...then that was that. But either way, it was time for this vulturess to shove the chick out of the nest and hope he learned how to soar.
"May Scorpio and Ophiuchus give you speed and protect your steps," she said solemnly. "Not like you'll need help with all the training I gave you. Go." With that, the Death General flicked her tail and turned away from her frustrated son.Ice_Dragon_Demon I think we're done here! Time for a Sbande/Cranium RP?
