So... I love role playing, it was the main reason I joined Gaia. Some of the guilds I was a member of were pretty inactive so I was looking through the guilds for a new one to join. There was one yaoi guild where the description sounded good and I thought, that sounds for me, but on further investigation I noticed the way the subforums were titled. Thus:
Yaoi RPs Yuri RPs Normal [boyxgirl] RPs
SO am I being really over sensitive (that is a problem I have) and petty or does anyone else find this offensive? Should it not be yaoi, yuri, straight. Isn't putting yaoi, yuri, normal suggesting that the others are abnormal? Of course I do yaoi RPs - I'm gay! But being gay does not make me abnormal thank you. What do other think?

I don't personally find it offensive, but I can't speak for anyone else.
If, aside from that, you like the looks of the guild and want to participate, I wouldn't hold it (the subforum's title) against the community as a whole. A captain or vice-captain probably just slapped the title on it without giving it much thought.
If you do end up joining and become an active member of the guild, you can always suggest to the crew that the subforum could use a better name.

personally, i don't find it the worst thing, but it can be kind of annoying. subforums in rp guilds are often set up by genre, and often times yaoi and yuri are counted as genres. so that's what i see, but i get what you mean. often times, those two are largely overpopulated and fetishized on here by the younger roleplayers, so that annoys me- but otherwise, not at all.

I find it a touch off putting. I get where you are coming from tho. The association of normal = straight, abnormal = gay/les.
I would have gone, yuri, yaoi, hetero/straight

I think it should be labeled yaoi, yuri, straight. I'm straight and think that no sexual orientation should be put above another by being labeled "normal" I can see where it just wasn't thought out and was unintentional though. You should bring it up to the people who run the guild and say it can be offensive the way it's worded.

It sounds to me as though you're unaware that yaoi is primarily and most vocally enjoyed by rabid fangirls and not gay males. Expecting respect and understanding from them is... A bit naive, to say the least. Yaoi RPs are not simply gay RPs. They are about as true to life at giving honest and sincere in their portrayal of gay men as girl on girl porn is at portraying true to life lesbians. Really if it upsets you, you should probably either talk to the captain or make a thread there. They might either not take you seriously, or consider you a novelty, there. Expect reactions that bespeak feelings of "Hey look! It's a real gay man." Of course this could be a different breed of fangirls, more intelligent or cultured or, dare I even suggest it, a group that includes a decent number of gay or bisexual men, but from what I've seen that would not be... "Normal."

I guess I should've said heterosexual. Although, I think of it more as being "the more common path" so that's why it's straight. confused

I would find that offensive, but I am sure the guild owner may not realize that it could be offensive. It's really on how you interpret it. I can look at it an think it means that the homosexual community is small in comparison to the heterosexual community, or I can look at it and think that it's implying that homosexuality is not natural. <-- I think this view is me acting defensively to what might of intentionally been a negative statement.
Maybe PM the guild leader and explain your reaction, and ask her to change the word normal to straight.

Hmm. It's silly but I don't find it particularly offensive.
I think by "normal" they perhaps meant "typical" as in, your "typical," "average," sexual RP, not that "boyxgirl" is "normal" or "correct" but rather it's more often seen, it's your "typical" sexual/romance RP, etc.
Afterall, the [boyxgirl] can be removed from context and you're left with "Normal RPs" as the title. I think it's simply a product of someone's ignorance and that they truly see no issue in the title.
If you find it bothersome simply contact one of the crew members and I'm sure they'll change it c:
On an Anime site I scrolled down to where they have their genre's and at one point when "Free!" premiered they added a genre titled "Gay." I contacted them about it because the Anime does have suggestion homosexual traits but there is no explicit homosexual activity or coupling etc. They corrected the issue after about a week or so.

I don't find it offensive. If anything, it's not being "fair" insofar that they are putting the LGBT community in an outside grouping than those who are "Normal". I'd be one to believe that a "Straight RP" title would be a bit more fair.
In other news, I see people are still using Japanese terms for their English forums.
