Adil was pacing back and forth, mumbling under his breath. About what, it would be difficult for anyone to hear unless they went directly up to him. But from the set of his tail it was obvious it wasn't anything good. It almost seemed to bristle at the end like a cat when aggravated. In fact, the tiny hairs on his back were standing up on end like an aggravated cat. Recent events just always went to show why he couldn't settle down here. His father. It always went back to his father. The stallion was the very definition of frustrating. When he wasn't flirting with one mare, he was flirting with another. It drove Adil to madness to watch. Adil didn't know how many other children Tahmid had out there and, besides that, he wasn't sure he wanted to know. Tahmid had the kind of rank that allowed him to travel to other herds and Stars on business. That allowed him access to far too many mares.

And what could he expect to do about it? Or his grandparents? It went in one ear and out the other. He just didn't care. It baffled Adil with such a kind father and headstrong mother. No one but Tahmid behaved like that in the family. He could see how it bothered his grandparents by the looks on their faces.

It was only a matter of time before Tahmid left the herd, too.

The paint stallion ceased his pacing, icy blue eyes taking in the world around him as he tried to calm down. Unfortunately, he had left his weapon behind and wasn't feeling up to retrieving it to let of some steam. He could ask someone to get it for him, he supposed. But he didn't like to order others around. He wasn't part of the royal family. The herd owed him nothing.

User ImageThe artisan had been hard at work all day making tack and clothing. This was the life she had chosen for herself when the herd of her birth had cast her out and she'd discovered this one. Anuyidan'Danayi wasn't perfect--far from it--but it felt like home to the chestnut mare. Aaliyah felt safe here. She just wished she didn't feel so lonely here as well. She shook her head to get the kinks out of her neck from working so hard for so long and stretched her legs. A walk would do for a welcome break--and who knows, maybe today would be the day she made more friends. She hoped it was. She'd joined Anuyidan'Danayi in the hopes of being with other, like-minded people, but so far, she'd been a member of this herd for two years and she still had no one she could call a particularly close friend.

She suppressed a sigh and kept walking, looking around to see what other stars in the herd were up to. Her attention was immediately caught by an arcturus stallion pacing back and forth in agitation. Aaliyah's dark eyes narrowed as she tried to remember who the stallion was. She'd seen him before, of that she was certain. He was...one of the warriors, right? He looked very annoyed about something, but perhaps she could be of service. "Excuse me, Adil. Are you alright?" Adil was his name, right?

Adil gave a start at the voice, making to draw his sword in his quick fright. Only to have his teeth grasping at nothing as he remembered he had left it behind. Why was he so nervous, anyway? The herd was safety. There had never been a fight, at least not a serious one, inside ever since he could remember. There was no danger here. Even the most defenseless foal could wander it carelessly without trouble. And if it found trouble there was usually some stallion-or mare in some cases-nearby with a weapon on hand besides the ones nature bestowed upon them all.

Turning towards the voice, he felt even more silly about his actions. A chestnut mare in pretty green tack was watching him. The family line taught him not to under-estimate a mare's strength, but he wasn't the least bit suspicious of this one. Only because he'd seen her before and knew her to not be of the warrior side of the herd ranks. What exactly she did, however, was forgotten. As was most of the herd's professions. Not that he wasn't interested. When you had plans to leave one day, it was better if you made as few friends as possible. Nash and Aludra had been accidents. Accidents he would miss just as much as his family.

Stammering for a minute on his words, Adil's jaw set stubbornly. "Only family problems. You need not concern yourself." Icy cold eyes roamed the oasis around them before settling back on her, a curious hint to his voice. "You know my name, but I only remember you in passing."

Aaliyah had never been properly introduced to...well, anyone, really. Maybe one or two stars and a couple of the traders besides, but definitely not to any member of the army. As far as she could tell, the arcturus stallion was a member of the herd's fighting forces, a recollection confirmed when she saw him reach for a weapon that was not there. She'd startled him--not her intent at all, but she wasn't sure how, or if, she should apologize. "I'm sorry I startled you," she said. "I am Aaliyah, one of the herd artisans." She bit her lip at his icy stare. He seemed perpetually angry, or at least discontent, and she found herself wondering why. "If there is anything I could do to help you, you only need to ask, sir. Even if you just need to vent." She flicked her tail and braced herself for rebuttal. She didn't regret offering help. Offering to help someone was never the wrong thing to do. She just didn't like it when her politeness was returned with anger.

Adil gave a great sigh, taking in air slowly and expelling it slowly. He looked away as he did so, not realizing it would make him seem angry at her persistence to help him. Like he couldn't bare to look at her anymore. Not the case. Though it was true he did need to calm his nerves and this was helping. The sighing, that was. He didn't wish to bring others into his problems. This was between him and his father only. Maybe his brother. His sister didn't seem too bothered by it or much else. Such a strange trio they were. One wouldn't know they were siblings had they not looked similar. At least Sadia and Madhu. Adil reassembled his grandfather more than anything else, with his mother's gorgeously pale eyes. Unfortunately, Madhu had the luck to get a mane that grew in the style of their father, which Tahmid had inherited in turn from his grandmother.

Adil doubted he would ever see his great-grandparents. What would they think of the mess of the family? Or was this sort of thing normal? He knew they were out there somewhere but had little desire to track them down. They had never lived in A'D. Probably didn't even know it existed aside from stories from passing merchants or travelers. Had they been interested in their family they would have found some way to contact them already, wouldn't they?

The stallion turned his gaze back on the mare, the ice blue of his eyes making it difficult to give him anything but a cold stare, coupled with the fact he didn't smile much. Smiling drew people in. He couldn't have that if he was to leave.

His voice, at least, when he spoke was not cold like his eyes.

"Do not worry about it," he told her calmly, shaking his head. "I am fidgety as of late." Trying to change the subject, Adil walked closer to a respectful distance in an invitation to talk with him regardless of his stubbornness to keep his troubles to himself. "You have similar tack to Aludra. Her mother is native to the deserts. If it is not too personal to ask, where do you come from?"

When the stallion sighed and turned away, her eyes had narrowed in annoyance. She had been trying to be friendly, to be useful, and rebuttal was no way to respond. Everything about him--the way he carried himself, the way he watched, the winter hue of his eyes--was cold. She waited politely for him to respond. When he did, she found herself pleasantly surprised. Despite his cold mannerisms, his voice was like a balmy day. It was a very nice surprise, and Aaliyah's eyes went from narrowed to smiling.

Fidgety--more likely he was worried, which would account for the stiff demeanor. Besides, soldiers were supposed to be like that, right? Calm, stoic, not normally socializing? But she saw that arion boy of Badr Basim's socializing sometimes, so it didn't seem to be all that taboo. Adil was, yes, worried. What he had to be worried about, she wasn't sure, and she'd dearly love to know so that she could help, but it was so nice to hear something warm out of him that she didn't want to lose that.

His innocent question stung her. Yes, it was personal. And no, she didn't want to tell anyone. It still hurt. He's not judging you--open up to him, and he can open to you so you can help. "I come from another herd in the desert. I do not know if they are still around. I came here seeking...a better life. So far, I have found it. If it is not too personal to ask, what is on your mind, Adil?"

Adil raked his memory for the things Aludra had told him about her mother's side. Unlike her husband, Yasmin had not been born on this world like so many Stars he knew had been. She came from wherever Stars had come from, where not even the King and Queen had come from. Or at least the Queen hadn't. She had shared some parts of her past with those close to her and Aludra had shared them with him, knowing he wouldn't spread it around or use it against her or the royal family. Not that it wasn't common knowledge the Queen had been born in the same desert city as the King to a mare who hadn't lived long past childbirth. But she had seen so much of the world already and she was so secretive, it was easy to forget she wasn't otherworldly. Yasmin, however, was, though she claimed not to have any memory besides the fall to support this. Even that she collected from the memories of those around her who had found her on the ground. It was strange, but wasn't something Adil ever thought too much about.

He also knew Yasmin hadn't 'fallen' into another herd. She had not met other Stars until she had been stuck in this very oasis. So that meant Aaliyah's herd might have some connection with the mysterious place Yasmin had come from? Or their attire was based off the culture Yasmin found herself in or vice versa.

What he did know for sure was, in amongst all the cloth of A'D, the two of them were a strange sight. Hardly displeasing to the eye, however. Adil found himself unable to determine which one was prettier. Aludra had that gorgeous, long, curly hair, but Aaliyah's black muzzle gave her a more delicate look. Her outfit was also more pleasing to his pale eyes. Aludra's fit in perfectly with the royal and nobles. Which didn't work well with him. He had no interest in befriending the royals. Or even the nobles from other lands who had come here.

"Mm. More herds in the desert than I would have thought," came his response, his tone of voice lighter in his interest to hear of other herds. But a frown quickly appeared on his face as she repeated his question for her use. He still didn't want to talk about it. He didn't even like talking about it with his family and Aludra. The plus side of Aaliyah was she might not plead him to stay. Though he was reluctant to share and would remain adamant about it, he figured it would only be proper to answer her question since she answered his. He did not, however, have to share everything.

"I cannot make this place my home." The rest remained on his tongue, but if she knew who his father was, perhaps she could piece together the rest of the story that one sentence didn't tell.
