Above her the ocean rippled, causing waves of light to dance among the ruins below. Hiding in the open windows. Jumping across the roofs where a roof still stood. The kelp and coral covered the vast civilization, giving suggestions that it had been sitting at the bottom of the ocean for a long time. Unless it was built that way by the Nova. Des'tai had no idea. She had only literally come across this moments before. She floated beside a very tall structure, a giant obelisk with which she curled her lovely transparent tail around. One foreleg was wrapped around it, the other pointing downwards at the world below her, as if pointing to whoever was near her. Only she was alone. For the time being. For a very short time being if she had anything to do with it. Even far away, the little world beneath the waves struck her as lovely. Perfect. The finest place to serve her purpose. She just had to find Llyr and make sure he agreed. If he didn't, well...She would have to make sure he did.

With a soft smile on her face, the mare unhooked herself from the obelisk and swam gracefully down towards it to get a better look. The windows were smooth where she could see through the kelp, as were all the walls. It was a little village of stone boxes with cube holes. Like they had been chiseled straight out of the mountains. But on closer inspection to a few of them, a chipping of the outside walls showed neat lines underneath. Like bricks stacked on bricks. Various objects littered the inside of many of them, as if someone had been into each and threw them around in a fit. Or a storm had knocked them lose. Obviously this place had sunk long ago by the shifting of the earth. It wasn't Star made. No other creatures but a Nova had reason to make a civilization below the waves.

Unless the stories of half human, half fish were true. The very thought brought a clear laugh from her throat as she swam out of one doorway for another, always running her hoof against the wall to feel the roughness of it. Yes, Llyr would be crazy not to consider this place perfect.

Then again...

User ImageThe sunken city had been there for as long as time; Amjad remembered hearing stories about it from a storyteller friend. There were quite a lot of them, and most of them were contradictory. The city had been sunk by the wrath of a god, the city had been washed out to sea, the earth itself had moved to drown it, it was lost in a war. Two of them were similar--one story held that the city had been built by a mermaid to house her homesick lover. The other held that the city had been dragged out to sea by a lonely star so that he could be with his mermaid wife. Whatever the story, it was a landmark--seamark?--on Amjad's travels, and one he frequently used to navigate by. It created its own currents, its own smells of algae and anemones that made it a beacon in a desolate ocean.

Or perhaps not so desolate as he thought? The trader paused at the sight of another star exploring the ruins, her fins ghosting through the water like seafoam. She was lovely and graceful, sliding through the city like a dream. Intrigued, he swam closer, admiring her from a distance and hoping she didn't attack him for his rudeness. "Excuse me!" he called out.

Though she supposed a team of Nova could have build this. The abilities of her own kind never ceased to amaze her. She had heard of land herds who had managed to cultivate and improve settlements left behind by previous inhabitants. Making it so they were suitable for Stars. Or the range of Stars who were able to use weapons. She had seen a few in her travels, probably fallen into the ocean or dropped by Nova wielders. She had never tried such weapons herself. Teeth had always done fine for her in the past. Once you weren't afraid to bite hard, what else did you need?

Des'tai drifted lazily, her tail drooping slightly behind her, the fins caressing her skin in the current. It was calming in this city. Very peaceful and quiet. It made her feel a little sleepy, but sleep would not come yet. Not before she found Llyr and showed him. She wanted to set up their base here as quickly as possible. She was about to swim off in the direction she last saw him when a voice caught her attention. She was under the impression she was here alone. Had this stranger been watching her?

The mare stopped, curling her tail in front of her. It swayed back and forth, keeping her as steady as it could and from being pulled along by the current. With a tone of voice that was not friendly, but carried a little hint of impatience, Des'tai rounded on the stallion. "Yes?"

Through lost alleyways he followed her until his shout had caught up. The mare did not seem appreciative of being interrupted. Amjad now regretted having called out to her, but hey, he'd done it with the best of intentions. Most novae were lonely, only able to keep to themselves. There were precious few herds of them, and for the most part, they were insular and avoided each other. Amjad was rare--he was a member of a land-based herd. It made him all the lonelier, though, to only meet other stars when they could be bothered to go down to the shore to chat with ol' Amjad. Meeting another nova was uncommon, and a treat to be savored. So he put on his friendliest smile, and barreled on despite the mare's impatience. "Hello. Sorry to disturb you, I just was curious. I haven't seen you here before, and I've been here many times.

"What do you know of this place?" he added. That was a bit unfair, considering that he'd never seen her here before, but a little voice at hte back of his mind had suggested that maybe she was some sort of historian on a quest to find this place. It was a silly story he made up in his head, but he always made up stories about strangers. It was something to do on long journeys across the sea. The ocean had precious few landmarks or things to look at; you found something to entertain yourself, you kept watch for changes in current that indicated your location, you avoided big predators. You made up stories. And when you got the opportunity, you talked.

The bottom half of Des'tai's face was soon covered by the large fins of her tail, floating lazily in front of her out of her control. It was a position she often adapted when interacting with someone knew or who she knew to be untrustworthy. If they proved anything but friendly, all she'd need to is swing her tail down, hopefully hitting them in the face and giving her time to get some distance between them. Than she could use that advantage to get close for the first bite. Her tail wasn't very convenient in a fight, better for beauty than combat. The many transparent fins were easy to grab and weighed the same as a feather, providing no strength behind a swing like this Nova's tail would. Sometimes she envied them that luxury. Only sometimes. If given the choice, she would always prefer her beautiful fins to the boring ones of most Nova.

What did she know? The way he spoke didn't make him seem very threatening, but Des'tai was always cautious about everyone she met. He could be trying to gauge something out of her. Maybe this town wasn't as empty as she'd first thought and he was trying to figure out how much she had discovered. Some Stars were masters at being deceitful. Best to play the honest game since she had nothing to hide by doing so.

"Nothing. I only just came here and haven't seen anyone else until now."
