Jake hit the training dummy with more force than he should. Dammit, just what was he missing? Why couldn't he summon his weapon? Was it doubt? Guilt? Was he just incapable of being able to do so ever again? Why the hell couldn't he do it? It was tiring, and he didn't know anymore.
Perhaps if he regained his confidence... but how? His last fight against a horsemen was so terribly one-sided it was just an insult, and there was no way he could ever win against Sherry. What did it take to make himself feel more adequate?

In a sense of timey whimey, Milo was in between missions and in a small form of down time; if that was really a thing, though he had gotten a few good stretches of time to do a little bit of nothing. But, being the active sort, it didn't last long. He had so far gone on a small jog around the not so restricted parts of the island (and avoided the parts he heard had things that could eat him) and gone to the cafeteria to somehow procure himself a bag of chips.
The training grounds just seemed like a decent enough place to go to next, maybe to see if someone was there. Perhaps a spar. And if not, well, there was always time for some Super Sentai Awesome Action Pose Time; things still needed to be perfected even as much as his partner protested. Today, though, there seemed to be company waiting for him at the fields and that always brought a smile. It was someone different too, not the usual he ran into.
"Yo!" The trainee called out when he was in shouting distance, unawares that Jake was riddled with doubts, angst and personal problems.

Hearing a voice, he turned, arching an eyebrow at the trainee. Someone he hadn't seen before... was he new? Then again, he didn't know a good portion of hunters of the island, let along a handful of the division leads besides his own, and, well, the "important" ones.
"Hey..."
He gave a reluctant wave.

"Sup?" Waved back upon getting a response, still looking pleased as punch and still completely unaware. "Never seen you before, brah, which is weird 'cause you got like really distinct hair, ya know?" Milo kept on babbling, pointing a finger at the top of his head as he referred to hair while his other hand was stuffed into his pocket. He was well within personal space bubble distance from Jake now, teetering on break through as he leaned slightly to get a look to what the other guy was doing with the training dummy.
"Doin' hand to hand stuff, ya? Cool cool," his lips pressed together in a not bad kind of way before it broke back into a smile and he extended his hand in proper introduction, "Milo, by the way."

At the mention of his hair, his hand instantly shot up, touching it subconsciously. He knew it was an odd colour, and while he was thankful not a lot of people pointed it out.
"T-thanks..."
As the trainee got closer though, Jake found himself taking a step back, slightly uncomfortable with the close proximity. Somehow, this hunter reminded him of a certain pink-haired girl...
When he mentioned the training dummy though, Jake gave a hesitant smile, and took his hand in greeting.
"Uh... yah. Name's Jake."
With introductions aside, he wondered if he should go back to training, when an idea came to him.
"Say, if you're free, do you want to spar?"

The step back was duly noted and was received with a mischievous little smile, it was amusing to say the least. So far, there seemed to be a few jumpy new friends on this island. Strange when they dealt with battling monsters and stuff.
But he did get a handshake out of it, and Milo left it as the customary old fashioned; Jake didn't seem ready to go full Fourze just yet but in time there would be no hesitation. None, he was determined. "So, we got a Jake and a Jack, ya? Pretty awesome," he chuckled as he brought his arms up to cross over his chest.
To the request, his smile simply spread, "aa, brah, thought you'd never ask." Now they were talkin'

Even after all this time, he much preferred fighting monsters than getting touchy-feely with others, though it was rather subjective on who it was with.
"Jack?"
Jake arched an eyebrow. So there was actually some hunter named Jack. And all this time, he thought people were just getting his name wrong on purpose. Regardless, he was glad when the hunter agreed, and chuckled.
"Just what I'd expect to hear from a Sun."chirigami No worries! Feel free to go first. :>

"Ya, thankfully you guys look different, so it won't be confusin'" No, wait. Well, the hair, it was similar. But the height difference was really the thing here, and perhaps time would tell of other things.
For now, though, both seemed to be willing and able to round of duking it out in a bout of potential friendship and comradeship. And that was awesome. Jake only nodded, not quite convinced. Just their names alone would probably cause tons of confusion, but, well, he was used to it by now.
No more words were said as the trainee summoned his weapon, and he tried not to let the twinge of jealousy show. Something which had almost been second nature to him, and now...
He pulled out the daggers, raising them to fend off the blow before delivering a strike himself.
"This may be just a spar, but don't take it lightly. I won't go easy on you either."

"Wouldn't want ya to, brah," Milo replied in a cheery tone as he attempted to side step Jake's daggers, but ended up taking a good hit to the side before evading any further damage.

Like most times, Milo chose to ignore Koume but for better reason this time around as he turned about on the ball of his toes back towards the teal haired guy and swung the blade down. Yes, attacking, that's why the voice was disregarded, he was going to put it to that. He was in the moment, this was a close quarters fight after all even if the naginata had more reach. But Jake had those daggers.
"Daggers, ya? Cool cool, a nice change of pace from like giant swords an' stuff." They were supposed to train with various weapons and against, after all, right? Quote: hp: 36/40 damage: 3 charge: 2/3 || 1/2 [A.V.] sorry, things got busy on my end!

With all the past spars he had had with Sherry, one would think he'd be used to long-ranged weapons by now, but even then, the hunter's weapon caught him off guard, and he winced as the blade cut into the dagger's barrier. It was hard enough fighting with a compromised shield, though he supposed it was better than NO shield.
Jake gave a half-hearted grin as he swung again.
"It allows more mobility I suppose. I don't know how practical it is fighting with something so heavy."

< ..... did he just call me fat? > And if there was any time to nearly trip, that would have been it. Milo's attempt to return the favor of a friendly attack was gone because of Koume.
She seemed rather insulted. Nah, I really don't think he was talkin' about you, aibou. There was even a touch of nervous laughter as he stepped back and tried not to look like he almost ate it nor missed.
"Saw a couple massive weapons at the Sun meeting, I think one guy had like an axe or somethin.' Crazy. Not sure I could deal either." He chuckled, spinning the pole of his weapon between his fingers. Both in response to Jake and attempting to pacify said weapon. She was throwing a few insults of her own and didn't seem to like new found teal haired friend. Had Jake known he had accidentally spurned his sparring partner's weapon, he would have apologized immediately. He knew all too well an angry voice in one's head was never a pleasant thing. Or... at least he knew. Now, he would pretty much welcome it.
"Yah. If I recall correctly, Sun division is known for offense. With such impractical weapons, you'd have to make every hit count."
And then he demonstrated.

The daggers were very indeed effective and in the hands of their user, quick and precise. Milo wasn't able to bring Koume up quick enough to block them before they cut in deeply into his shield and made him wince and take a step to the side before they entangled themselves or something.
It seemed like this battle was going to be a pretty close in proximity, even though he had more of a reach with the naginata but getting out of the way proved a little difficult at the moment. So, in a hopes to remedy and also just counter the stabby times of the daggers, Milo brought up the blunt end of the polearm as quickly as he could to strike back. "We all gotta work with what we got, ya? 'M sure they know how to use those big things pretty well."

Expecting the sharp end of the trainee's spear, Jake hadn't seen him swing the blunt end at him, and in surprise, staggered back as it collided with his shield. Despite his handicap, it looked like he had the upper hand for now, but he didn't forget that the gap between a bonded weapon and plain runics was vastly different. If he didn't stay alert, he would probably get himself severely injured.
"I suppose so. Especially with weapons. It's not like we pick the kind and type of weapon you bond with."
It always made him curious to know what type of weapons bonded with different hunters. Curious enough that he got distracted enough not to attack.
