“Relax.”

Lithian glanced up at his sister at the comment and dropped his hand from where he’d been rubbing at one of his horns. Lacing his fingers together and tucking them behind him, he curbed the urge to begin nibbling at his lip instead. The ship ride over had been an eye-opening experience in any number of ways — more ‘firsts’ than Lithian could count on his fingers and toes combined — and the brief trip through Eowyn’s port market this morning after coming to dock had fascinated him to the point where he couldn’t seem to keep his eyes still for a moment. Now, however, the prospect of actually traveling out into the desert proper, with someone he’d never met no less, to battle dragons — Lithian exhaled a wavering breath.

This was a bad idea. He ought to have chosen a civilian’s life after all. Been an alchemist, maybe. He could do that without getting himself killed, right? How hard could it be? And yet…

“Here we are,” Ysette said, interrupting his runaway thoughts, and Lithian blinked, grounding himself again in his surroundings.

They’d come to a stop under the rickety, hanging sign of seaman’s pub, the sound of ships rocking in their births, sea bird cries, and the slap of the ocean waves against boat hulls just barely audible still in the brief lulls between the clatter and ruckus of the passerby. Everything felt so wildly new he hoped he wouldn’t be left to his own devices anytime soon. He’d lose himself for certain.

“Kayden’s a friend, Lithian,” Ysette reminded him, drawing his eyes off of the passing crowds and up to her. “He knows Charlotte well and assured me she’ll be a good coach to you. You’ve nothing to worry about. Besides.” She smiled, tucking the tips of her fingers into the pockets of her lightweight vest. “It’ll be good for you to meet new faces for once, mm?”

Lithian dropped his eyes to the cobblestone path at their feet. “What if I’m horrible? What if she doesn’t like me? What if I get us kille-”

“Lithian.”

Lith bit his lip and looked up again, meeting his sister’s stare.

Ysette raised her eyebrows. “Do you want to do this?”

A swallow. And then a nod.

“Good.” Ysette’s smile returned. “Practice acting like it. She’ll be here any moment.”

Lithian nodded again, and promptly began going through a mental checklist of all the possible ways he could die by dragon.

The Only Black Uke

Charlotte set a brisk pace back to her ship after completing her hunting endeavors in the desert. As much as she loved her crew and the ocean, it was nice to do a bit of exploring off the sea every now and again. Especially on Eowyn. The continent was so huge, and the terrain so varied that it was probably one of her favorite places to adventure. Now if only her damned wings were strong enough to actually fly...! But in time, in time. She sighed as her ship came into view across the sand. Naturally, pirates weren't welcome in the major ports, no matter how good-natured and friendly they were. Of course, Char had heard tales that her own crew wasn't nearly as pleasant as she believed them to be...

She shook her head and set off at a jog. As she drew nearer, Charlotte caught sight of a pink blotch leaning against the railing. And only one of her crew mates had the gall for such a flamboyant hair color. "Char!" Kayden called as he headed for the off ramp. "I didn' know yeh had plans today, lass!" He scoffed, snagging her arm before she could so much as think of boarding her ship.

The Orderite staggered as she was pulled in the opposite way of her momentum, taking a few jumbled paces before she could right herself and keep pace with her Dovaa friend. "Well, they weren't really plans." She admitted uncertainly, confused by the usually laid-back man's urgency. Of all the people that had somewhere to be, Kayden wasn't usually one of them. Char supposed he left the ship at some point or another, but he always seemed to do it either at her expense, or when she wasn't paying enough attention to him to notice at all. "Where are we off to in such a rush?" She questioned, blinking her violet orbs up at him.

"I got a friend er two waiting fer us at the port! If I'da known ye'd be gone half the day, I wouldn'a offered to bring ya!" The Dovaa scoffed. Was he... was this what angry Kayden looked like? Maybe it was more miffed than anything else, but it was the closest Charlotte had ever seen for sure! She couldn't help but giggle a little, despite the situation.

They kept up the brisk pace all the way into the port town. Char wasn't half as used to keeping up with his long strides as she ought to be, leaving her moderately worn by the time they arrived. The Orderite cast her gaze around, wondering who on earth Kayden would actually know. As she turned her questioning orbs up to ask him, she saw his face light up, and she was being tugged along before she could voice her question. "Ysette!" The Gaili beamed, approaching another Dovaa. He released his younger companion to instead wrap his arms around the strange woman. Char felt her cheeks darken at the sight.

Instead, she turned her gaze toward the younger boy at her side. ...This wasn't some kind of weird date, was it?

Lithian blinked, startled by the strange man’s brazen approach and even more so by his sister’s lack of objection to it. Ysette got on well with her fellows on the field and off, Lithian knew, but even with her friends, she generally prefered to maintain a bubble of personal space. Instead of tensing or looking irritated, however, she only chuckled, clapping the man — Kayden, she’d said his name was — on the back and smiling down at at him when she’d been released. She looked, if anything, comfortable. Accustomed, perhaps, to this particular man’s antics?

“Lithian.”

Lithian’s eyes darted up, meeting his sister’s stare. She inclined her head towards the man, and then the young, flustered-looking young woman at his side, naming them as she did.

“This is Kayden, and Charlotte.” Ysette’s eyes flicked over Charlotte critically, taking in details as though she, too, were seeing the girl for the first time. Perhaps she was? Though she continued to speak to Lithian, she held the girl’s eyes unblinkingly as she, “I’ve been informed that she is a practiced mage, fully capable of keeping you safe and helping you to hone your abilities.” Her smile was tight — warm, but also a veiled warning. “I’m sure she’s everything Kayden promised her to be, and you’ve nothing to fear in her company.”

The undercurrent of, ‘And if she’s not, there will be consequences…’ hung in the air so thickly, that Lithian swallowed, broken from his thought process only by a gentle nudge at his back from his sister. He stumbled forward, eyes jerking over to the young Orderite woman.

“L-lith…” He cleared his throat, holding out a hand. “Lithian Bhardvaris. It’s a pleasure to meet you?”

Ysette tisked.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you,” Lithian repeated, fixing the intonation on the latter part of his statement and smiling sheepishly.
