I've never heard of the latter.
I use AIM, Skype, and Steam Chat rounds out the top three. Used to use MSN all the time, but it started messing up for a lot of people and Microsoft stopped offering the client for download, (though it still works as do 3rd party clients,) but everyone I ever talk to have migrated to Skype or Steam Chat.
Only used Skype's video chat once. Normally I use it for IMing.
Wish Skype's window was slimmer.

Kik is better for meeting randoms and having quick conversations when bored. Skype is good for creating genuine fun relationships.
