On the surface:
A somewhat flighty girl, she's often lost in her own world and constantly forgetting things. She can be a bit ignorant about the world and its cruelty and often believes in giving people the benefit of the doubt and second chances. She has a rather annoying stubborn streak and isn't one to give up until she's obtained what she wants. Selene is a very friendly girl, and isn't afraid to approach strangers to start a conversation and possibly make new friends.
But deep down:
Selene led a rather secluded life, and most of her childhood revolved around her hardly leaving the front yard of her house. Her father was a banker, her mother a seamstress, and neither of the two found any use for keeping pokemon; in fact they found them to be quite dangerous. Selene ended up taking more after her mother, finding entertainment in watching her mother mending and creating clothing. Unlike her, she actually wanted a pokemon companion and begged to have start an adventure like most others. Finally, her parents relented, and she started out on her journey, even with a late start.
