Fei yawned as he walked. Yesterday had been the first step into his new life, and it had been kind of a tiring one. Today he had decided to explore around his new home in hopes of meeting a friendly face. So far he hadn't met anyone, and it was almost noon. He sat down with a flop and sighed, chewing on his ear. Maybe he ought to head back and explore in a different direction tomorrow. Still, it had been a nice walk, and he had enjoyed the getting to know the area better.

Brenny had been wandering the forest, checking on every wild Pokemon he could find to see if they were warm enough. Or comfortable. Or if they had enough food. The celebi still considered himself the guardian of the forest. He often visited, attempting to assess whether the Pokemon who lived therein were happy. This was the first time he had actively sought them out.
He nearly stepped on a meowstic as he walked, and taking a double take stopped and stared. "I'm sorry," he said. "I didn't see you there. My name's Brenny. If you tell me your name, we can be friends. Are you happy here? Warm enough? Do you have enough food?"

Fei jumped back in fright, hissing at the bumbling idiot who had nearly crushed him. He took a couple of deep breaths taking stock of if he had been injured. When he was certain that he truly was fine he turned his attention back to the string of questions he was being bombarded by. "....Fei." He didn't bother answering any of the other questions as he looked 'Brenny' over. Finally curiosity won out over his quickly dissipating annoyance at being nearly trampled. "What is a 'Brenny'?"

"I'm a Brenny!" Brenny beamed, gesturing to himself. "A celebi. I take care of the forest here, because I'm this forest's celebi. That means I'm the guardian!" He studied Fei, before smiling brightly. "And you're a Fei. The only one there is in the world, I bet. You must be very special. I've never seen anything or anyone like you before!"

Fei's eyes widened before he let out a small laugh. "That makes two of us then. I've never met anyone else like me either." He studied Brenny a little longer before tilting his head. "You don't look like a celebi. Or any pokemon I've ever seen. Why is that?" The young meowstic didn't mean to come across as rude, he was purely curious. He moved closer still, sniffing at Brenny. "Do you live near here?"

"So you must be a very special Pokemon." Brenny beamed. All of his friends were special. "Well. I changed," he began, "I used to live here with my--" he had been about to say sister. But Cecily wasn't his sister anymore. She had made that perfectly clear at the each. "With another celebi. But she left me. And it was winter like it is now. I was really cold and hungry. But a tauros came and found me! He warmed me up and fed me. And I found a star. That's what chanced me so I look like this. Daddy says I'm still me, though. I just look different." The celebi boy beamed.
"Maybe you'll find a star, too!"

Fei's ear twitched a bit, hearing a deep sadness in Brenny's tone when he spoke of the other celebi. With a frown he peered up at the boy, knowing how it felt to be abandoned and alone. However the meowstic wrinkled his nose at the mention of finding a star that could change you. He wasn't so sure he wanted to change again and be even more different. Being different was what had gotten him into this mess to begin with. "Do you like it? Being different. Doesn't everyone shun you and chase you away. Isn't it lonely?"

"I didn't at first. Changing scared me. But Daddy said I'm still me, and those who love me recognize me. My sister--the other celebi I mean... she didn't. She hadn't looked for me like I did for her. She didn't know who I was. She was afraid of me." The celebi boy found that his eyes were wet, and stubbornly blinked away the tears. "It hurt a lot. I knew she didn't love me then. We're twins. She should've known me. But she didn't even want to come live with me. I suppose it was selfish to expect her to. But I loved her." Loved, he knew, was a lie. He knew it should have been present tense.
"But no one else shuns me. Everyone else loves me. I haven't met anyone else who makes me cry. So you don't have to worry about being different. The people who really care will never stop loving you."

"But what if nobody cares? Then I'd be alone and even more different and weird all over again." He pouted and shifted his weight awkwardly. Fei wasn't sure how to comfort Brenny when he spoke about his sister. He'd never felt the sadness of having someone close and then loosing them. Of course he'd never had anyone close to him either.

"If nobody cares, then they probably never did. But I care! We're friends now, and just because we're different doesn't mean we can't be friends!" He smiled at Fei. "See? No matter what you look like or how different we are, we'll always be friends now."

Fei paused and thought hard on that. Slowly a smile formed on his face and he nodded. "Friends? I've never had a friend before. And you promise you won't forget about me right?" Fei truly didn't know what he was supposed to do with a friend, or even how to treat them, but he knew he wanted to try. Especially if it were with Brenny. He seemed nice, and Fei really wanted to help him with some of the hurt he felt surrounding the other celebi.

Never had a friend before? Though it was a vague memory, Brenny thought he knew what that was like. To be alone with no one to talk to or love. He knew what that was like. That situation had been forced upon him--but surely being born into it was worse? "I promise!" He said. "We're friends now, and friends never forget about each other."

Fei smiled and nodded approvingly to himself. Friend. He turned the thought over in his head repeatedly, studying it before letting it go. "And I promise to be the best friend I can be. Even if I don't know what that entails exactly." He offered his hand out to Brenny, an offer to shake on their shared promise.

Brenny took Fei's hand, uncertain as to what to do with it. He gave it a squeeze. "I can teach you about being a friend. Its really easy to do. Anyone can be a friend! All you need is someone else to play with or talk to. Or even just being there! Just being there for someone can make them feel lots better. Want to play, Fei?"

Fei nodded happily, looking around as he considered what to play with the celebi. He frowned as he noticed the position of the sun. "I can't play today. I should head home before the sun sets further. Can you come back again? I promise we'll play then! Like friends should." The meowstic nearly purred with excitement as he stared up at Brenny with huge eyes full of hope.
