User ImageMoonlight fell on the conifer woodlands, wet with autumn rain. Their was a smell of life in the air--the scent of fruiting mushrooms; the smell of fern spores, and of owls and bats on the wing; the smell of the trees, of the damp and musty mast beneath the glistening trees. Above them was the night sky--not so much black so much as a deep, rich purple studded with ten hundred million gems flickering into eternity. The Milky Way was a fecund bridge across the vault of the heavens; the moon was the half-lidded eye of a lover, soft and passionate in the darkness. The song of the night was of a light breeze in the treetops; the occasional squeak and flutter of a bat; the distant hoot of an owl.

In a clearing in the woods, Mistsorrow stood alone. He imagined he was an eerie sight--stringy mane in his face, glowing sullenly purple. Unnatural. Unfit to be there. But looking up at the stars--all those millions of lives in Dream Space or wherever stars were before they Fell--he felt, for once, a peace. He felt, for once, the roiling, boiling mass of his emotions still for just a little while. Distracted. His mind turned outward. The stars brushed across the throat of night, and the moon coyly winked her way towards the horizon.

It struck the stallion suddenly that he was not alone. He felt a presence somewhere nearby. Not a threatening one, not a disturbing one, but a presence nonetheless.

Where was she now? The princess flew above the forest, moonbeams and starlight touching her wings. This world's day and night moved without the help of powerful unicorns. The night differed from her own, beautiful in it's own right but didn't have her same touch. She spoke softly to the sky her horn glowed blue a crescent form appearing at it's tip briefly Luna hoping the stars would hear her as she called for them all to shine their brightest. Tonight was a fine night, sadly most creatures still slept through even here. As Princess of the Night it was her royal duty to protect those slumbering creatures. Her powers diminished having no control over this sky, the mare spent her time hunting her nightmare. Like all nightmares it had to be faced.

She'd fallen, from her evening sky her sky, fighting the shadows that always seemed to haunt her where was it now? Down there perhaps? She could sense something faint, unfamiliar but faint almost sinister, it was not from her world. That feeling pulled her from her thoughts.

Luna descended from the sky slowly her wings opened wide gently landing among the trees both graceful and regal holding her head high. Only the soft flutter of her final wing beats could be heard as she tucked her wings back neatly against her side. Glowing softly her horn lit the way. Luna strode in the shadows of the forest and light of the moon that was able tp peirce the forest. Her nebulous mane and tail shifting glittering like the stars themselves had been embedded there. She strode toward the strange presence she felt, the stronger it became the more uneasy she felt, yet pressing forward until she could make out the form of a stallion.

"Hold! Who goes there!" Strength evident in her overly loud voice as she emerged from the forest. The stallion that stood before her an eerie feeling emitted from him leeching some odd purple liquid. Surely it was such that the liquid made her uneasy. He was surely up to no good to no good! Tilting her head up her critical eye remained fast on the stallion. He was no creature of nightmare she had ever seen even donning even stranger armor. Softer though still with strength just not as much yelling "Who doth stand before us?"

The presence drew closer, and announced itself with a piercing shout. The Terrorcon's ears snapped backwards in a combination of pain and startlement, then he whirled around to face the stranger. A mare with an ethereal mane that rippled like water and shimmered like a galaxy was walking towards him, every line of her body and twitch of her muscles evidence of command and experience. Dignified, strong in spite of her slight frame...she reminded him a bit of his uncle and cousin. Well, more than a bit, and that was strange. She wore no more armor than a chestplate and hoof coverings, but could she nonetheless be one of his father's people?

If so, he was in trouble. Her eyes were the brilliant blue of the Autobots, and he had never been fond of fighting. He lowered his head in respect and took several steps back away from her. "I am Mistsorrow," he murmured, "and though you will not believe me when I say it, I mean no one harm. This I swear."

Brilliant blue eyes judged his reaction, this pony seemed so much meeker than his appearance first suggested. He seemed to fear her. Did he know of her past? How could he if he wasn't a citizen of Equestria? Accustomed she was to such reaction from many ponies but a this one? Looking as though he could have many quaking in fear of his presence like she had done once. Could it be a trick?

Trust did not come easily to her, perhaps this child was similar to her? subject to a curse that he chased or chased him? Shunned and misunderstood recalling how she felt for so many years. With the help of many that had begun to change doing her best to put the past behind her and face the future and her curse. She'd never let it hurt anyone else it caused so much pain among the ponies of Equestria.

But now what to do with this stallion? Lower the volume her sister's student Twilight Sparkle had said. A smile graced her features lowering the tilt of her head she spoke in an almost normal level voice "We are Luna, Princess of the night." she gaze shifting to the sky then back to Mist "I believe thou mean no harm." Though the substance still made her feel uneasy.

"What manner of substance leeches from thy body like blood yet doth feel like shadow and nightmare?"

The mare seemed to have believed his words, and she'd lowered her voice to introduce herself. Mistsorrow was unfamiliar with the term she used--"princess," what did "princess" mean? It was plainly a title, but was it military? Civilian? Religious?--but it would seem she was not an Autobot. Which wasn't a reason to trust her, of course, and nor was it a reason to underestimate her. It didn't mean she wouldn't attack him, but did make it less than guaranteed. Nonetheless, Mistsorrow did not like frightening or worrying people. He didn't like attacking people, or being attacked, and he hated--hated--how frightening he looked. So he continued to keep his head down, letting his flat, glowing eyes peak out between strands of forelock.

"This substance I exude is...not of this world," he said. The full explanation--gods, battles, chaos, death--would only make the situation worse, he felt. It would make him seem...evil. And yet, to lie would be irresponsible, given the nature of his blood. "It is a deadly poison, antithesis of all life," he added. "It is at odds with all things."

The child seemed not to raise his head, was he still frightened of her? Luna worried, had her approach been wrong? He didn't raise his head instead glowing eyes peeked between long straight locks. A strange stallion indeed."Have I frightened thou? Raise thy head We mean thee no harm."

The Princess listened to his explanation calmly, so this is another world indeed, she certainly was far away from her home, She glanced up to the night sky and briefly wondering what Tia would think once she woke and the moon was still in it's place and Luna was nowhere to be found. Luna's gaze focused back on the stallion remaining on the slashes before shifting to his face as he explained about his strange blood like substance.

But that would explain how she felt it to be strange to her, if like herself this substance that came from his body was indeed from another world. How many others entered into this one? were the stars in the sky above this place all different worlds? It would too explain the strange armor she'd never seen before. "We too are from land distant."

The substance sounded dangerous to anyone, "How does thou live if such substance is at odds with life? Thou is alive just as We." he moved and spoke he wasn't a corpse. Certainly he was alive he couldn't be otherwise.

"I am not afraid," Mistsorrow murmured back to her, "but I have met many in my wanderings who feared me. I do not wish to cause you or anyone distress. But if you would see my face, then so be it." He lifted his head, stringy forelock sliding off of his face to frame his frightful eyes. Dark energon, too, dribbled from his eyes to pool underneath or on top of the armor on his cheek. He could feel his hair get stuck in the substance, as if the blood of Unicron was indeed the same consistency as blood.

The mare talked...strangely. Not the cadence of her words necessarily--they were that dignified, steady, verbose language that his father and uncle used. It wasn't strange to him--in fact, it was downright comforting. It made him feel safe. No, it was the way she referred to herself as "we." Did she have a split personality? Was there someone he couldn't see? So that was an odd thing indeed. "I was born on this world," he added. "But this substance did not come from it. It comes from...my father's people, who are indeed strangers to this terrain. As for how I walk with this substance? I am neither living nor dead. I am driven, like my father is now, by this substance." It was the truth, or at least, the truth as he understood it. He'd gotten the explanation piecemeal as he'd gotten older, and he was grateful for it now. It was still almost impossible to explain, but at least he understood it, unlike when he'd been very small and living with his mother.

“For thou is that not better?” she asked as he raised his head. Though she was honestly surprised, and couldn't quite hide it. Whatever relatives he had they were from another world like she was, though her world had evil none like this.

The substance continued to drip like blood yet this fluid was evil? Yet the stallion it circulated inside was not, or did not seem to be the way he spoke it seemed he was afraid of people fearing him. Mistsorrow certainly was fearsome, though he seemed to try and keep his face hidden yet with his mane as the glowing purple liquid clung to the hair. His eyes were quite piercing like something mechanical she had never seen anything like it what was it that caused them to glow, though whatever presence followed him seemed to want to suck any sort of good feeling from the air she was perplexed. Yet understood some of what he felt especially when it came to fear.

Now that she could see his face he seemed to be confused as to her way of talking. Oh she'd been using the royal 'we' again, people no longer talked like that of course she must seem strange again to an even stranger stallion. She understood enough and gave him a soft nod of her head with a light smile.

"We," she began but paused to correct herself softening her voice again, "I have seen many things both good and evil," she had been both, allowing a cloud of nightmare consume her. She’d seen people yet fear her even after the nightmare had gone. "Child of mist and sorrow, worry not of what others think only try and be thyself they will come to understand thee then.”

"To look another star in the eye, and to feel a connection, is a pleasing prospect. But I would not rob another of their security if it would only serve to make myself feel better. I could never do such a thing. I have known too much fear to knowingly instill it in another soul." Even as he said it, he realized how...twee it sounded. How nice he must sound. How suspicious any star should be of one who claimed to intend no harm. From the stories he'd heard, any person who claimed to want to be helpful was trying to manipulate someone.

He was being sincere, however, and he hoped Luna would understand. She seemed very kind, and he didn't want to get on the bad side of someone so kindly seeming. And comforting--from the way she spoke to the soft glimmer of starlight in her mane, Princess Luna radiated a calm he did not normally associate with the night. The night was terror, it was entropy and hatred. But she, she was serene and regal. And it seemed, very experienced. She reminded him once more of his parents like that--ancient and knowledgeable, aloof yet approachable. And the flicker in her eyes made him think that maybe she knew how he felt--a brief glimmer of pain when he described how he hated being feared. Had she been feared once, too? Did she understand how he felt?

"Thank you for your kind words," he said. "And for your advice. From where do you hail, Princess Luna? From whence comes your wisdom, if the telling is not too painful?"
PostPosted: Thu Dec 19, 2013 1:59 am

Princess Luna listened quietly, as the stallion spoke, he was a kind stallion and she could certainly respect that. So she pushed no further. Luna felt as though he had suffered but she was unsure as to the degree. In her own world there was a much clearer divide between good and evil in comparison to this world. The Princess had not experienced such treachery like Mistsorrow knew of. The citizen's's of Equestria were mostly good ponies that relied on the four princesses to protect them and it was her duty as one of those princesses to do so during the night while her sister protected them during the day.

Princess Luna gave the stallion another hint of a smile "You are welcome," Her sister was often sought for advice among other things, she was not sought on advice to the same extent as her Elder sister Celestia. Luna had her own way of giving advice, in dreams. She could be everywhere all at once without leaving the castle and could remain where she was needed. She helped and guided many a pony through their fears.

Luna cast a long glance skyward toward the brilliant moon opening her wings to bathe in it's light for a moment. She missed home, she had been banished for so long only to loose what she'd regained so quickly. It was almost cruel. There was something she still had to ask, she was always curious of those who feared the night, her night. She always couldn't help wonder why, and it was relevant too to what she was about to speak of.

"Let us ask thee this before thou tells, doth thou fear the night?"

The half cybertronian once again her strong gazes focus as her wings settled at her sides again. The telling was not to painful, not anymore that is. It had been a long time since someone had wished to hear her story all the ponies of equestria knew it again upon her return from legend on the thousandth day of the thousandth year of her banishment.

Princess Luna had not answered his question, and though he remained curious as to her home, he did not press the matter. Wherever she came from, he had no doubt that it was any less magnificent a place as those his uncle and father had described to them of their own home, long since gone to the ravages of time and conflict: swooping, soaring, as though the wind and starlight themselves had become solid to provide a home for the graceful fliers of Cybertron. Was she of Cybertronian blood? If she was, she didn't seem to know it, or be willing to acknowledge it. Any Cybertronian would have recognized his Seeker wingplates.

She wanted to leave her past behind, probably. He would accept that. There was many a star freshly Fallen that wanted to move on. As for her question, though? Well, it wasn't too painful to answer--he wasn't ashamed of his fear. "Mine night is wracked with nightmares," he admitted. "It has ever been thus for me since childhood. Night itself is not frightening--it has a calm and a peaceful serenity; looking to the heavens, we see where we came from. We see home." He blinked. "But, alas, sleep itself fills me with terror."

(( COMIC SPOILERS - Read at your own Risk))

Mistsorrow did not fear the night this pleased the princess and she gave him a little smile only to change to a frown and look of puzzlement. Raising her brow she looked down on Mistsorrow, no one guarded their dreams? If they did he or she wasn't doing a good job. She should relive them! This young stallion plagued with nightmare and there was none to guard the dreamscape. Why was this world lacking such a guardian? if such terrible nightmares plagued this one then she could only imagine how the rest of the peasantry lived fearing sleep.

"Thys dreams have never once been sweet?" Such a crime could not stand! The princess gave a snort stamping her hoof "This Displeases Us!" she said her voice suddenly loud and commanding. Rearing she Thrust her hoof in the air flared out her wings, looking rather menacing. A royal decree requiring a royal voice she announced to all in earshot " As Princess of the Night We Decree We shall take over the night duties of thy world!!" She smiled standing tall looking Quite pleased with herself. The Princess's wings returned folded to her side.

"As Princess of the night it is our Duty as guardian to come into our subjects dreams." she explained to Mistsorrow.

Perhaps there would be manticores to spar with here too, that would be most delightful. she enjoyed the quiet patrols with the night shift royal guards. "Where art thou Tiberius?" coming to a realization, had she not come with her faithful pet and companion? Yet the Opossum was no where to be seen. Normally Tibbles kins would be hanging around her or sitting on her back. She paused and pondered he had been sleeping upside down above her bed during the night perhaps he remained yet in Canterlot with her sister. "We are worried yet" she spoke softly casting a glance behind her she ould have to look for him while she hunted her shadow...

Right she'd gotten carried away again and forgotten to answer Mistsorrow's earlier question...

Mistsorrow frowned. Well, that wasn't entirely accurate--true, he had nightmares every other night at least, and often more commonly, but he had some pleasant dreams. They were just rather less common. And there were times when he didn't dream at all. In his opinion, those were the very best times--no worries, no strife, a good night's sleep, and no sitting around dazed the next morning trying to remember what those dreams were about. His nightmares always had a terrifying logic to them, whether he was walking the manor of sleep or watching the destruction of the Chaos Bringer, they were simple narratives, usually boiling down to "something evil is chasing you." Neutral or even good dreams (although how one quantified a "good" dream was beyond him--dreams were weird, not pleasant, in his experience) were always random, illogical, and entirely nonsensical. He would rather spend a night without dreams than have to sit through a weird one in which nothing made sense. Then, the next morning, he wouldn't have to try to figure out what the dream had been about or what the internal logic of the thing was.

He was just opening his mouth to explain it all--or at least to correct her, that he had, in fact, had a few not-unpleasant dreams, when she started shouting to all the world. His ears flattened back at the volume and he took a step backwards, leaning away from her. He wasn't sure why she was talking in plurals--we? Was that some form of address? Or did she have a split personality? His first reaction was one of fear and confusion. What was she talking about? Why was she shouting?

His second reaction came only after he got over his initial startlement. "You...go into dreams?" he asked her as she began to look around. He didn't know who Tiberius was, and he was starting to get slightly worried about Luna. He also didn't know if he counted as one of her "subjects" (princess must be a type of ruler, then). He called no one his ruler, so was she helping him or not? And what did Luna mean by going into dreams? He wasn't entirely unfamiliar with the idea of going into other people's dreams, but in his experience it was mostly a bad thing. No one should ever have to go into the Manor, and in his opinion, no one should have to watch the Chaos Bringer, either. It was simply a bad idea either way.

"Tiberius is our most loyal companion and pet opossum we thought he journeyed with us or remained with our royal sister."

Luna regarded the stallion for a moment realizing he was terribly confused. "It is tradition to use the royal canterlot voice making decrees and use the Royal 'we' when addressing oneself." she explained to a rather confused Mistsorrow. It was habit and one not easily broken, though she had been doing better. "We will take thee as our first subject in this world." she declared though not as loudly this time remembering to keep her voice a tolerable level "Since thee has such troubled sleep."

He didn't seem to understand, was entering into dreams here so uncommon? that might explain why nightmares roamed "We do, we enter into the dreams of our subjects protecting them from nightmare it is our Royal duty." she finished. Only Mistsorrow seemed concerned, of what she was uncertain, but perhaps she should explain herself more?

"The question thou asked us about our wisdom, is thou still interested our tale?"

Aaaaaah, now all was making sense. Mistsorrow once again had the feeling that he had stumbled upon something alien here, something very different from anything else he'd ever known. It wasn't just the feeling that she came from a different world and a different culture--that he got from practically every star he'd ever met--but rather, it was the feeling that her world was every bit as ancient and complex as the two worlds he'd been born into. Nothing he had ever encountered before had given him that feeling of texture and richness. The chaos beast inside Mistsorrow once again cried out in hunger, but now his hunger was for more. More information, more learning, more story. He had found something strange this night, something magnificent. Something...was beginning.

He stood straight and adopted his most formal tone. "If thou wouldst take me as thy subject and ward in dreams, then I would serve thee for all my days, however long they may be. In what capacity might I serve the Princess of Dreams, my lady? Please," he added, "tell me more of thy tale. I feel that this meeting by fate hath been decreed for a tale most great to be told."
