Chester found his home away from home was always lacking in the food department these days, and he needed to take more proactive steps in ensuring there was food to eat there for the many guests, planned or unplanned, he had been having at the Carnival grounds as of late. Usually he just bought food as he needed it, walking to the local market and picking up small things here and there.
He never really had to worry about taking care of himself, much less other people.
But he was going to make the effort now, especially with Zia coming over so much. He felt compelled to make sure she was okay, or at least comfortable and happy at his place, just because she seemed to be so upset. Life had been hitting her with the s**t stick a lot, and he was not going to let that keep happening. At least when she was with him, she could relax.
That was the plan, anyway. He was out in this nice grocer to buy better food, feeling a little compelled to make sure she had something nice to snack on. He wasn't really used to legit shopping though, so he was spending a lot of time staring at labels.

The grocery was a common destination for Eleanor. If she wasn’t here to pick up supplies for classes, she was there deciding what to make for dinner. Tonight she wanted to make something extra special and had stopped on her way home from work to peruse the aisles. She already had a good idea of what she wanted to make and her basket was full of prawns, daikon, Chinese cabbage and three different types of soy. Now she needed the panko crumbs. Ah, there they were and so many brands! She smiled at the dark-haired man already there inspecting groceries as she stood on tiptoes to reach the item she wanted. Eleanor tugged the package free… unintentionally bringing all the rest on the shelf down her and the other shoppers head. "Oh no," Eleanor cried as the packaged panko crumb rain ended, "I am so, so sorry."

Chester looked at the woman who came up near him, but he did not react fast enough to help her as she strained to reach what she was looking for. He was a tall and generally polite man, if not slow and very stoic about it. It took some patience to actually realize how nice he could be, as he came off as a very rude and distant kind of person.
He frowned at her as food items came raining down on his head, and he looked at his shopping basket, which was now full of crumb related products that he was fairly certain he did not need.
"You might have asked for help," he said, tilting his head at her with his face set in a straight line. He was the kind of man that was impossible to read, if only because most of his emotions never reached his face. It was always dry and bland, set in a sort of frown that deepened easier than it did turn into a smile.
Not that he had any reason to smile at the moment, since he had just been attacked by food.
"Are you okay." It was a question, though it did not sound like it. And it was legitimate as well, in that he was concerned. A little.

“I’m really very sorry.” She was blushing, her cheeks twinged red as she knelt down, trying to pick up as many of the errant packets as she could. They kept slipping through her hands so she started shoving them into her basket instead. Eleanor looked back up with an apologetic nod. “I should have. I’m sorry. I didn't want to bother you.” She gave a vigorous shake of her head. “Oh I’m quite fine, thank you.” It was typical of her to cause a mess and it was just a shame she’d managed to bring half the aisle down on someone else as well.

Chester stared at her blankly for a very long moment, and it was tense in that his thoughts were completely masked. Was he angry? Was he amused? There was no indication either way, until finally he heaved a profound, put upon sigh.
"It's alright," he said, at the end of his long breath out.
He moved to help her gather the bags, putting them back on the shelf as best he could, though he was not sure how they had been stocked before. He did his best, but someone would have to clean that up, regardless. Taking the bags out of his shopping basket, he made sure not to accidentally take something he didn't want back to the check out with him.
Though, would Zia like something made with this stuff? Maybe he would get one bag, just in case.
"I don't think there is any harm done... hopefully you needed twenty of these." He might have been making a joke. The words were right, though the delivery was terribly flat, and his expression did not read as though he expected her to laugh.

If there was a long wait for his reaction (and there was), Eleanor didn't seem aware of it. As far as she was concerned, he was taking her annoying panko crumbed intrusion remarkably well. Samuel would have been yelling at her by now. Her hands fluttered a bit when he moved to help, as if about to try stop him but she soon went back to the task of cleaning the floor of her mess. Then it was done and she stood up, the basket hanging off her arm nearly overflowing. It didn't look like a joke and it didn't sound like a joke, but it felt like a joke and Eleanor giggled, smothering the sound with her fingers. "Two would have sufficed, but I’m sure I can do something with twenty as well. Perhaps I’ll make a few extra treats for my students tomorrow."

Chester watched her, arching his eyebrow in wonder at something she said. He took a moment of thought, quiet as always, before he nodded his head and stared blankly at her where an interested smile should have been.
"Your students? Are you a teacher at one of the local schools?"
He was interested in that. He was not a teacher, and he did not go to school any more. He'd done his time, and that was more than enough to prepare him for the real world. He'd always had his goals, and making a carnival was it. Traveling, stationary: it did not really make a difference. But he did like teaching others about his arts, and he wondered, sometimes, about pursuing that when he was done in the business himself.
He wondered if she was a home type teacher, the ones that got hired to teach specific lessons. Maybe she brought food for them, or maybe she was just a really cool high school teacher, or something like that, who brought food. But that would be strange in schools, wouldn't it? Unless she taught cooking. His brain turned it over thoughtfully, while he politely waited for a response.
She looked like she would be a nice teacher, at least, regardless of type, as she was polite.

"Oh yes, I am teacher!" It was her greatest accomplishment to date so far. Spending her days teaching children was always a joy and Eleanor couldn't have been happier. Well, she could have been… but that wasn't a thought worth following. Samuel was still adamant not having kids of their own. "At Meadowview High," she looked very proud as she spoke, eyes bright. "I teach Home Economics."

"That's a good occupation. It's nice to see teachers," he said blandly, his tone not sounding particularly sincere, but only because it did not sound insincere either. It was perfectly level and revealed absolutely nothing about his real feelings, one way or the other, which people often interpreted as the negative side of things.
He did deeply respect teachers, though, of any kind. It meant someone had passion enough about their craft or their knowledge to want to share it with others. And that was something he really did care deeply for.
He was all about passion and belief in a career or art, something to drive someone forward through their life and give them purpose.
"Teachers are important. I sometimes wonder if I could teach students anything... but I don't think I have the... personality for it." He stared at her blandly.

By the time he had finished speaking, Eleanor couldn't have possibly looked happier or more pleased at his recognition. Teaching wasn't for everyone and she knew some people would rather clean toilets than have anything to do with a rowdy bunch of pre-teens. "I'm sure you'd make a wonderful teacher," she assured brightly. This was no false praise and you could tell from her smile that she believed every word she was saying. "As long as you care about what you're teaching and want to give your students the very best that you can give, why, nothing else matters. You certainly seem very nice to me."

Chester knew one thing for absolutely sure: he was not cut out for being a teacher. He would be terribly hard to approach, and he was not much for the one on one talking that would be required with his students. His lessons would be short and they would be one sided. He would not really want to have discussions, and he would make sure the tests were sufficiently difficult to cover the information he was trying to share.
But he still had those thoughts. He still wondered about teaching, and what he could offer others. He thought it would be a very fulfilling sort of a job, and he certainly did like the idea of passing on what he knew to others.
If only they did not also have to be part of the interaction... if it could just be one sided he would be just fine. Interacting with people, though... was just not his strong suit. As evident by the lengthening silence between him and Eleanor as he pondered all this. Focusing his gaze on her again, he might have looked embarrassed if he were capable of making facial expressions.
"I appreciate the confidence. Is there anything else I can help you with? Will you need help with your groceries?" That seemed like a silly thing to offer, but he felt like he owed her, since she had been nice to him.
