Lenka was ready. She was more than ready. Goretti hadn’t had a sparring match with her yet, in fact, she hadn’t really spent much time with the boy since she first found out he was powered. She had called him and now was just waiting, crouched on top of the playground set, right by the slide, staring out at the dark, brisk night, waiting for him, waiting to jump out and surprise him. To pounce and attack.

Boy was she excited!

She stifled a giggle and continued waiting, running through the game plan in her head. She was going to jump over the slide cover and run down the slide, trapping him in a watermelon and kicking him over, then telling him this was a war and he had to fight back…and they would spar, and finally, she would invite him for trick or treating when it was all over! It was perfect.

And in the end, he would totally thank her for being such a great friend. Lenka stiffened slightly when she felt him approaching, then when he got just close enough, she acted, springing up, leaping so gracefully over the slide cover and running down the slide, summoning her rind and crying, “Lenka Full Body Rind!”, before throwing it right at Goretti, grinning.

Time to fight!

Goretti felt the eternal chibi, though he never saw her. She had time to call out her attack and he turned—just in time to get plastered by it. The rind wrapped around his arms and the boy looked up at her, confused. "Lenka, I don't—wait, what?" he blurted, looking a bit afraid when the rind grew to cover him.

It took only a few seconds before he was gone, entirely trapped beneath the strange watermelon shell. A part of him was afraid; he didn't like very closed spaces when he had no idea what they were. But it did smell nice…and he did trust Lenka.

He just had no idea what was going on. Failing from within the rind, he squirmed and shouted. "Lenka, what is this! Are you trying to eat me or something? Lemme out! I thought you wanted to hang out! Don't leave me in here! I want out!"

He wasn't super distressed…but he didn't know how long he could stay in there before he started smelling like watermelon…

And he wasn't sure how he was going to explain that to his father.

She gave a slightly guilty look as she saw that he looked scared, but shook her head, going along with her plan. “I’m not Lenka, I’m an evil bad guy! And I have you trapped!” She shoved hard against the rind, hoping to knock the boy over. “Defend yourself, puny senshi!”

This was for the best, drills, practice fighting. IT was all there to help him survive. And she wanted her best friend in the world to survive this war. Wanted it very much.

“Now hurry! My attack doesn’t last too long!”

Lenka sprinted away, laughing and climbing back up the slide, crouching once more, waiting, watching.

And still feeling pretty bad.

Goretti was quiet for a moment as it sank in and then he let out a knowing, "Ohhh, okay!" A training exercise was okay; he probably should have tried to take it more serious than he did in that moment, but knowing that she hadn't been corrupted by some evil monster was a huge relief to him. She was just his friend, and was just worrying about him.

"Well then, prepare to meet your maker, evil bad guy!"

He struggled and wiggled, though didn't break out of the attack until it's duration ran out. He drew in a lungful of air not necessarily because he had been suffocating but because it felt good to breathe something other than watermelon. He quickly looked around. "You're not gonna get away!" he shouted, jumping to his feet and looking around as he tried to locate the girl. Even if this was training, he still couldn't wipe the smile from his face.

She gave a relieved grin as he caught on. Good. At least now she wouldn’t be afraid that her friend was angry with her. Lenka remained hidden for a good long moment, just waiting. Finally she jumped up, leaping once more over the slide cover. “You’ll never catch me! Not in a hundred million years! Lenka kiccccck!” She flew at him, foot outstretched.

This was something new she was trying, and she was quite sure she was going to fall over, completely fall over.

Or maybe it would work out as well as it did in the action movies and she would make a wonderful landing.

Or maybe she was going to fall over, without even managing to land the kick, which is exactly what happened. One moment she was flying through the air, the next she was on the ground, hands wrapped around a bloody knee.

“Ouch. And the Lenka kick is a failure. Good to know.”

Goretti blinked; he took a second to mentally argue with himself: on one hand, evil bad guy got hurt. On the other hand, Lenka got hurt.

…Okay, so there really wasn't that much to debate.

"Lenka, you're crazy!" he finally decided, rushing over to her side. "If you were a bad guy, I'd glue you up and kick you for that, so you're lucky you're my friend and I like you so much. You know, I think the goal in fighting is to hurt your opponent, not yourself. Are you okay?" he asked, looking at her knee. Something in him told him it would be a good idea to poke it, but he didn't think Lenka would like that as much as he would.

Instead, his hand hovered over his sash and he tugged at it until it came loose. "Move your hand away, I'll wrap it up. Is the rest of you okay, though?"

She moved her hand and shook her head. “It should have worked. I just…misjudged the distance, I think. And I really lost my balance, that’s all.” Lenka let the other chibi wrap up her knee and gave a little smile. “Thanks, Goretti…that already feels a lot better.”

The girl paused then leaned over, kissing the boy swiftly on the cheek then looking away. “You looked kind of scared when I put you in the watermelon. Was it scary? I know it must have surprised you pretty bad. I guess I should have told you I was going to be ambushing you…but I don’t think it would have been quite as effective…”

Lenka flopped down on the ground and stared up at the trees. “You have to learn to react faster! When someone attacks you…you have to start being ready to attack back, or running, or even falling over to stop yourself from getting hurt, you know?”

Goretti's face flushed just slightly at the kiss, but it was hard to remain focused when you had to think about a girl's lips on your cheek. Goretti hadn't exactly been kissed by anyone outside of his family—or those little old ladies who just couldn’t help themselves.

He blinked at her, though thankfully she asked a question that was more than enough to rouse him from his confusion. "I mean, it was a little scary," he replied, though didn't want to come across as cowardly. "I guess I just wasn't expecting it, so I guess you did a good job ambushing me. I learned a lot, so I'll practice reacting quicker. You know, I do it okay in soccer, but people just aren't throwing watermelon rinds at me. I've been running into bad people more often, though…so I guess things are getting pretty serious. Guess it's time to stop playing around and actually…you know, do what you were saying."

He sighed and flopped down next to her, looking up to the trees. "It was a good lesson," he added a few seconds later, sheepishly rubbing his cheek when he thought she wasn't looking.

She giggled, nodding. “I understand. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you. I just want you to be ready for anything. You’re one of my best friends…and I don’t want anyone hurting you, you know? Have you been patrolling with someone all the time? That’s really the best way to stay safe, you know. “

Lenka closed her eyes and grinned. “Oh! I forgot! Do you want to go trick or treating with me this year? Mom said you can come over and she’ll make dinner and we can go out and get lots of candy!”

She glanced over to him and grinned, seeming still perfectly fine with having kissed his cheek, though perhaps she was blushing a little. To be truthful, she hadn’t thought she could be so bold about something.

Goretti was still thinking about the kiss; it was just a little thing between friends, right? Friends did that all the time. Well, not boys, but girls did. They were always hugging or holding hands or kissing each other on the cheek. Right?

…Maybe.

He wasn't totally sure, but the concept of trick or treating once more gave him something to think about instead. "I'll ask dad! He was so worried, so I think that'll be a huge relief. Everyone was calling off for Halloween or had something that was going to come up, so he was worried he was going to have to go in. So if he does, he can be comfortable knowing I'm in good hands! And if he doesn't have to go in, I mean, can he come too? I don't want to leave him home alone. Maybe some nega will be going trick or treating and try to jump him for energy or something, you know?"

He had to worry about those things now. Sighing heavily, he shifted positions so he could make a pillow out of his arms. "But he'd be safe with you and me. Well, when I get stronger, at least. I'm gonna work on it. Maybe I'll go fight some more youma until I have enough experience points to level up."

He'd go after the Negaverse Agents if Lenka hadn't just proven that maybe he needed to stay away from them until he got a little better at fighting.

“Of course your dad can come! He can hang out with my mom and give out candy or something silly like that!” Lenka grinned, then sat up. “Come on, Goretti! Let’s go home! I need to figure out what my costume is going to be!” She jumped to her feet then held out a hand to the other chibi. “And yeah, I think fighting some youma would be a good idea! You can kick them around a little bit and make them turn to dust. It’s kind of fun to do that, at least I think it’s fun.”

She paused, thinking about the time she had to fight the pig youma and finally she shook her head. “Well…most of the time it’s fun. Unless they look like animals you like…one time I had to fight one that looked like a pig, and it made me so, so sad…I love pigs so much and I had to kill it and…ugh.”

Lenka sighed. “Anyway! You did pretty good tonight, and I’m sure that if I had told you what was going to happen, you would have done even better, so I’m really proud of you!”

Goretti took her hand, pulling himself up. "You're not going as a Jedi this year? I kinda just assumed you went as one every year." Once standing, he brushed himself off. "But I mean, I think that sounds great! I'm really excited to go this year. I don't wanna get too old that I can't trick or treat anymore so I'm gonna make the best of it. Or, if I stay small maybe I'll just keep going every year." He laughed, amused at the idea of a little old man going trick or treating. "Oh, but I don't want that. I need to get bigger so I can get as strong as the other senshi. But—Lenka, don't worry about the youma. They might be cute, but at the end of the day, they're just monsters, right? So you shouldn't be sad if it looked like a pig because it wasn't. It was just some nasty monster impersonating a pig. And if that youma had gotten out and attacked people, maybe it would have made them hate pigs, and that's not fair! So you did the right thing. I'd fight a cow-y youma if I had to. I think."

He paused, scratched the back of his neck and shrugged. "Well, hopefully I'll never have to find out! But I'm gonna go ask dad if I can go trick or treating with you and see if he wants to come. I'll text you when I get an answer!"

Lenka nodded. “I know it wasn’t a real pig, but that’s when I was still kind of new. It was a long, long time ago…but I got over it pretty quickly, I think.” She grinned when he mentioned asking his dad and she nodded happily. “Sounds good to me! I’ll see you later then! Have a good night, ‘Retti!”

The chibi paused for a moment, then leaned in close, kissing his cheek again, before laughing and darting off, running as fast as her legs could take her.

Well, well. She was the brave one, wasn’t she? She couldn’t get the stupid grin to leave her face until she fell asleep later that night. And even then, the expression might have still been a stupid grin, she wasn’t quite sure.

Two kisses? Did girls give each other two kisses? What was that French thing?

The boy looked embarrassed and turned away as the girl ran off. It wasn't an unpleasant sensation, just one he had no experience with.

Girls were so weird.

Why did he even bother to try and understand them?

She was long gone before he could make any sort of reply, but he wasn't going to stick around and wait for her to come back—or for trouble to find him.

Without scrubbing his cheek this time, he took off towards his own home.
