Jacinthus was out on a patrol around the village, ever vigilant since the threat of war had been brought to the world and his people. He meant to fight the soldiers of Oba when they showed themselves but until then he would stick to training, to preparing, and to keeping an eye on the village to the best of his ability. He wouldn't let some unknown and unwanted outsiders to come and take away what he had been working so hard to protect and maintain he thought to himself as he scanned the horizon, his mossy eyes narrowing slightly as he saw something glittering in the distance, "Hm?" What was going on over there he found himself wondering. It took a moment for him to really figure it out, a girl, Leaf Tribe if he had to guess, was running from some Witu...
"Ugh, those things really do grate on me." He muttered to himself, finding himself often wanting to go out and hunt Witu just to cull their numbers a bit. The village had enough to worry about without those beasts adding to the number of problems he thought to himself as he started forward, picking up speed as he went. He shrugged his bow off his shoulder and into his hand, reaching into his quiver a couple arrows. He put one into his mouth, notching the other, and set to work aiming as he ran... and then fired off the arrow. The first one hit home, burying itself deep in the neck of the closest Witu, and then he took the second arrow from his teeth notching it as well... but it would seem it wasn't needed. Seeing one the chance for an easy meal slipping away at the appearance of the hunter the Witu stopped their pursuit, allowing the girl to run on ahead.
The hunter sighed, slowing down somewhat, and sighed as he slung the bow over his shoulder once more. Phew, that had gone better then he could have hoped... though he doubted very high that they were done. They were likely planning their next move while circling around them he thought to himself, his eyes flickering from side to side for a moment before they landed ont he girl, giving her a displeased sort of look.

Meri was lucky to be alive. The prentice realized this the moment the wittu stopped chasing her. It took longer for her to stop running, and she nearly bumped into her savior. "You saved me!" the clumsy girl exclaimed, once she recovered the ability to speak. She flashed him a smile. It was then that she seemed to notice his expression. Her smile faded. She swallowed. "I--er--..." What excuse was she going to come up with this time?
"It was an accident," she decided. "How can I make it up to you?"

Jacinthus starred down at the girl who seemed to be all excited over the rescue, something he didn't really respond to. If anything the man just continue to stare until she seemed to realize that he was unamused. When she claimed that it was an 'accident' he gave a bit of a snort, "Such things are not accidents, they are proof that you aren't paying attention well enough to the world around you. If I hadn't shown up what was your plan? It's difficult, if not impossible to out run Witu and I have the scars to prove it." He told her in a displeased manner.
Shaking his head when she asked the question he said, "There is no making it up to me, this isn't about me, it's about you girl. You shouldn't wander so far from home without a least a walking stick to aid you if such a situation as this one arrives." He scolded her. Sure, he'd wandered all over when he was her age but he carried makeshift weapons with him to make sure that he could protect himself! Giving a snort he motioned to the fallen Witu, "Come on then, we are going to make use of that creature. There is no point in killing something for no reason other then killing it." Walking toward it he drew his knife. They would clean it, skin it, and make use of what parts of a Witu were useful and tasty he thought to himself.
"Move it girl! You aren't going to just stand around while I do all the work." He called after her, snapping his fingers at her as he knelt down next to the creature, making sure it was dead before retrieving his arrow from it.

Meri hung her head. "You're right," she said. "I wasn't paying attention. I wasn't thinkinking. I never thought I would meet up with them so close to camp." She blinked, once. Twice. She hadn't thought of a plan of escape. Her instinct had told her to run: and so she had."I wasn't thinking," she repeated.
"But you savd me," she proteted. She wanted to make it up to him, at least show her gratitude. "I'll get on that," she promised. She wouldn't leave home without something to protect her. This experience had at least taught her that. She followed Jacin reluctantly. "Are you sure its dead?" She asked.
She knelt down next to Jacin. "What do I do?"

"Our world is a dangerous one, girl, you can't assume that just because you are near to a village that it will be completely safe. There are many beasts, as well as those from other tribes, that will present danger to you. As such I would suggest that you never assume that you are safe." He told him before he looked the Witu over closely, inspecting it, before he turned to look over at Meri, "I am sure it's dead. Where I hit it would have caused it to bleed out rapidly." He had spent more then enough time scolding the girl to assure that the Witu had bled out.
Looking over at her once more as she came to kneel down alongside him he studied her closely, seemed to think about it, then said, "If you want to help me out then dig a whole. I am going to gut this beast and it would be best to bury what we can't use or else the scent will draw in other predators or scavengers, neither of which belong near the village. Can I trust you to handle the task?" He looked his knife over a moment and added, "I also require that if you are going to be sick do that in the hole you are digging as well." He said before he set to work cleaning the Witu.

"You're right. It was a mistake, it will never happen again." Meri was still shaken from her close encounter with death--or at least, injury. Constant danger: she didn't like to think about that. How was one supposed to protect the tribe if there was constant, ever present, unsleeping danger? She was relieved to hear the wittu was dead though.
"Of course," she said. She started to dig a hole, hopefully deep enough to hide the scent of the dead wittu from other predators. She hoped she was fast enough. She wasn't looking forward to meeting up with something else that wanted to make a meal out of her. "Thank you, for saving me."

Jacinthus starred at her for a long moment, his mossy eyes not blinking for a moment, before he finally looked away, back to what it was that he was working on, "See to it that it doesn't, there might not be someone of my skill to save you next time and then where will you be?" No where good, that much he knew for sure. If the girl was chased by more Witu and had nobody there to save her she could very well get eaten next time, not something he wanted to think about for even a moment. There were far better things to think about after all, the most important being what he was currently doing, that being cleaning the Witu.
"Once you are done with that we will bury what we can't use and then we will carry this back home. It's far too dangerous to butcher it out here, too many dangers." He said, one of his long ears twitching for a moment, before he lifted his head, looking around, then returned to what it was that he was doing, "No reason to thank me now, we aren't out of the woods yet, so to speak, they are watching us." He warned her, his knife starting to move that much faster now, knowing that they couldn't waste their time. They had to get moving, fast, which meant saving most of the work for later.

"Dead?" Meri guessed with a shrug. "But there won't be a next time, and you were there to save me." Her eyes shone, briefly, with admiration. She quickly turned away and continued digging the hole requested. "Right. I'm almost done," she assured him. "This should be deep enough, right?" She gestured to the hole. While it was deeper than it was wide, it probably wasn't deep enough to hide the scent of the dead witu from other predators.
"Watching us?" She echoed, glancing around. She was alarmed. "How do you know? I don't see them."

Jacinthus turned to look at the Leaf Tribeswoman, trying to guess fora moment if she was being sarcastic or not when she guessed dead. Hard to tell so he would let it slide he decided as he went back to what he was doing, "Yes, I was." He said simply, seeing no point in modesty when what she said was true. He was there, he'd saved her, and he'd kept her from being eaten. He merely hoped that from here on out she was more careful and didn't screw around any longer outside the village without at least some means of defending herself.
"I suggest from now on you at least carry a stick with some weight behind it, not the ideal weapon but something that a prentice like yourself is allowed to have." While she couldn't have a real weapon, not until she proved herself to the tribe, she could at least carry something with her to defend herself with. Glancing toward the hole she'd dug he gave a nod, "Toss the worthless bits in there then bury them." He said, finding that the hold she had made would suffice for what they needed it for.
Once he was happy with where he was with the Witu his attention was once more on the girl, "When you have hunted as long as me you start to sense it when others are hunting you. Best that we get moving once your done burying stuff. We will move closer to the village to butcher out this Witu since the rest will be less likely to follow us there." It wasn't worth following them to the village after all, that would just get the lot of them killed by those who were protecting Yera after all.

Meri beamed Jacin was attractive, and brave--and he'd saved her! "I will!" She promised. She planned to take his words to heart. Maybe she could save him, someday. When she was older and more experienced. What an achievement that would be! "I will," she added, more calmly. She'd find a good stick to carry. She did as he said, throwing out the pieces that they couldn't use in the tribe. She made a face as she did so, glancing towards Jacin more than once.
"Really?" She asked, blinking at him. "So we're both hunter and prey. And you know it?" She paused in her burying the worthless bits of the wittu to study him. "I'm almost done," she assured him. She finished, standing. "I hope they decide you're too dangerous to follow," she said. "I really didn't mean to attract them so close to the village."

Jacinthus gave a nod of his head, "That tends to be how things work, there is always something bigger out there waiting to eat whatever will fit in its mouth." He told her, then nodded, "Already, it's all ready." He said, then once Meri okayed it he set to kicking the bits that they didn't need into the hole before he he set to kicking the dirt back into the hole, burying the remains. Once it was buried he stomped the ground down as flat as it would go before looking over at the girl that was standing next to him, "Even if it's not deep enough to hide the smell completely it might at least distract them from us." He told her.
With that he motioned to the Witu, "Grab the back legs." He said before he took hold of the front legs, waiting for her to take the other feet, "We will head back, once we get you back to the village will be safe from the witu and you can be on your way."
He needed to get to work on butchering out the witu, to make use of what parts of it were worthwhile, and then he would head for home. Until they go back though he would keep an eye on Meri since it seemed as though she were in over her head at the moment. Perhaps she would be better off once she got a stick to defend herself with he thought to himself, "You might not have meant to but you still did, at the same time though you learned a good lesson. From here on out you know to be more careful, to take care of yourself, and if you keep such information in mind you will be well off."

Meri took the back legs as instructed, holding onto them awkwardly. "Right," she agreed. The sooner she got home, the better. The sooner that happened, the sooner they would both be safe. She didn't like the idea of being out here again, alone and unarmed, with with nearby. Yes, she would have to find a weapon!
"I know to carry a stick," she grinned, nodding. She'd certainly learned a lesson! She would be careful from now on. At least, more careful than she had been! "Let's go," she said. "Before they come back."

Jacin gave Meri one last glance before he started forward, back toward Yera, "So long as you don't mind helping out once we get there I might see about sharing some of the meat with you." Jacin didn't really mind sharing the meat with others so long as those that he was sharing with did a some of the work. He saw no reason to waste good meat otherwise. The walk back was pretty uneventful, but as they went he could hear the witu behind them. There were the sounds of snarling, digging, and other sounds. They were distracted, good, "I would suggest that you consider finding some friend or a partner for when you travel, it would be safest for you that way as well as safest for whoever you find to travel with."
When she said that she would carry a stick he gave a smile, "Good, the stick will at least give you a chance. Not to mention there are some creatures that you can hunt with a stick. My sister and I used to hunt small creatures and insects with sticks and rocks then cooked them up." He told him, then looked back at Meri for a moment. He debated a moment then said, "We were an interesting pair when we younger, my sister and I."

"Really?" Meri was surprised at Jacin's words. He would share? All she had to do was agree to help? "Of course I'll help!" She assured him. She listened attentively to his words, attempting to drown out the sounds of the witu behind them. Meri didn't think she could put enough distance between her and them. A friend to travel with? She hadn't thought of that before; it would be nice to have a companion her age.
"You hunted bugs?" She stared at him for a moment. After seeing Jacin in action, imagining him hunting for bugs with a stick was a difficult task. She couldn't picture it. "I'll try it," she said. "Do you know anyone who needs a traveling partner?" She asked, hopefully.

Jacinthus gave a nod before he waked along, leading the way to where the two of them would be doing the majority of the work. It was near to the village so that they wouldn't have to worry about any Witu getting underfoot. The creatures were annoying, of course, but at least they were easy to predict. They would likely spend their time digging up what had been buried, then, if they followed, they would only do so until they could see the village. They knew not to get too close during the day because they would be spotted from a distance and shot by any archer worth his salt that was guarding the place.
"Hm? Oh, yeah. One can't be picky about what they are hunting while still a prentice. We have access to only the most basic weapons unless we have an older sibling of parent to help, something Little Kei and I didn't have. As such we are mostly self taught." He said, lowering the carcass down once they had reached the village, getting out his knife once more, and set to work butchering out the creature, "They aren't too bad, bugs I mean, you just have to cook them and spice them right. Well... that and have a strong stomach, can't really let yourself get too caught up on the fact that they are bugs." He said then motioned to Meri.
"Alright, you can have a back leg. How are your cooking skills?" He asked as he worked, seeming to be quite efficient at his job of butchering out the creature.
