 She awoke with a start, the moon shining down on the clearing she'd used as a sleeping space. At her feet was the dead body of her own, dearest, sister. Her face contorted in sadness and rage. Alternating between the two over and over again. Pale eyes glanced over to her beloved familiar, a Furby she'd taken to calling Fuzzbottom, and her nerves steeled. She must solve and avenge the death of her closest friend and family member. Choosing the closest opening as the best place to start; Smiles and Fuzzbottom moved out with conviction. Not even two steps into their chosen course and they'd already reached a snag. Very ugly looking vines blocked the way- but Smiles wasn't deterred. She dug and ripped at them with her hooves, and though her efforts seemed to do nothing to the snare she was surprised to find a bloody tuft of her sister's hide. Still, Smiles continued to rip at the roots with her hooves. Again she continued to be thwarted. This was getting frustrating. As she tore into the blood red roots with no end in sight she was delighted to find another indication that she was on the right path- A pair of footprints leading down the path would show her where to go ... Taking a new approach, the brown doe tore into the vines with her teeth. A wave of relief rushed through her as a small chunk of the snare came back in her mouth. The dangerous looking thorns on the vine bit into her gums and lips, but as blood dripped down her chin and pain welled up in her face she still felt triumph. Caught on the very bit of vines she'd ripped free was the a bit of hair and hide from an unknown kin. It could only be the killer! Riding the high of her seeming success, Smiles kept biting and tearing at the vines with her mouth. More blood gushed forth, and more pain was caused, but she kept going. Amongst the group of vines biting into her face was yet another piece of a passerby. This time a bit of ... scale? She clearly had a lot to think about. If she could get past these. It was starting to feel like this was never going to end. As she pulled at the vines, they gave way and filled her with more pain. It seemed to do nothing to make a large enough hole for her to fit through. Not to mention these infuriating clues. There was no way to test her theory, avenge her sister, or sate her curiosity as to why she was spared if she couldn't get past these stupid vines. A trail of blood she'd not noticed the first four times she'd torn at the vines with her mouth presented itself. It was as though they were only showing up to taunt her. As if by magic. Her mouth should have been numb to the pain, she was surprised she had the ability to recognize it still, but tears were starting to cloud her vision and stream down her face. SUCCESS! Smiles finally managed to rip and tear enough of the vines and roots away to follow her collection of directions to find the killer. Or, as she'd learned in her struggle with this blasted plant, killers. Blinking tears away, and ignoring the blood on her chin and chest, she strode down the path with new confidence. The path sloped downwards into a river, and as she made her way across the muddy waters sharp teeth grazed her ankle. She kicked in fear and irritation at the large fish that swam about her, but as she did so it got another bite in. Her biggest fears were that she wouldn't be able to get out of the water, face her sister's murderers, nor keep her precious Fuzzbottom safe. This was infuriating. Her mouth was swollen from the vines and now she was sure the waters were going to cause the bites on her leg sickly. In a fit of pure rage that the usually gentle doe didn't know she was capable of, Smiles threw her whole head in the water. With one savage snap of her destroyed maw she bit the head of the pike clean off. Pulling her dead prize and head out of the water in triumph, she snorted with pride. One more obstacle down. Not really looking forward to the fight to get up a steep incline with a damaged leg and blood still dribbling just a bit from the wounds in her mouth, Smiles held on tight to the confidence from the pike kill and started her trek up. To her surprise all seemed fine so far as she made her way up without incident or pain. She just hoped her new good luck would hold steady. The climb was steady, and to Smiles' pleasant surprise a new revelation into her sister's death presented itself. Folded amongst some innocent looking roots on the slope were the remains of another kimeti. The shreds of fur matched the sample she'd found amongst the blood red vines earlier. Her luck ran out. As she followed what looked like the safest course, a large water rat leaped out at her from it's nest. Clearly angry she stepped away to avoid getting bitten, and in the process stepped wrong and twisted yet another one of her ankles. Continuing upwards, it seemed, was too much of a task on two damaged ankles. Taking another step up instead turned into a slip and slide backwards. Frowning, she craned her neck to check on her familiar. The silver lining was at least that he seemed fine. It was slow going, but as she made her way upwards Reticent Smiles was glad to realize that she could see over the edge of the slope now and onto the other side of the path.
