Let's see what's been going on with our protagonists so far:
User Image
"After waking up in some strange, dark building, they've worked to search about a main room. During this, it's become common knowledge that Celestia has visions when she looks at pae, although the reason why remained unknown.

In an attempt to escape, they crawled into a spider's nest, and, upon escaping from it, were chased by these spiders. They ran into a large room, which, after much stress, they managed to create a fiery defense and find a key to escape the room.

At this time they were given a vision of the previous use of the room they had taken refuge in: one of harems and orgies. The scene brought primal feelings to both of the pae, and, after nearly becoming quite intimate as a result, the vision ended, leaving them to battle with their thoughts over what nearly happened.

Now, they are resting in a hall just past that room, deciding that after so many things, it's justified. They are just about to start talking to pass the time.
"

Whatever shall happen, only the spirits know!

Celestia looked ahead as her sat beside her, her eyes glancing up from dirt on the ground to the stone walls to the end of the hallway and back. Her eyes only returned to look at the bag as he took food out of it, her hands moving to rest on her stomach and her cheeks flushing as it growled in response. Only now that they had time to consider eating did she realize just how hungry she actually was. Noticing it's placement, she accepted the invitation and, too, began to slowly pick out nuts and dried fruit to eat.

Compared to the emptiness in her stomach, it was relatively unsatisfying, but she did not complain. After all, it was far better than nothing.

Following suit and looking to the food in her hands, she shrugged lightly. Her mouth opened slightly before closing again. That was right, she had instigated this, but... what did she want to talk about...? Was it too much to just jump in with her vision; should she give some sort of context to the reason for it, or was that too demeaning? Perhaps something simple, casual, at first. Family? Yes, that would do.

"Nothing in particular, I suppose..." That was a lie, but she didn't want to admit just wanting to tell him a lot of things that very few knew about. Perhaps he'd instigate it himself, or, at least, this way she could learn more of him. "...Ranuin is quite the well-mannered child. You and his mother must be quite proud."

In response to the reminder, Faroth felt a flare of panic, the kind that any parent feels when unsure whether or not their child is safe. Calm yourself...nothing else can be done but to get yourself out of here first, THEN you can go look for him, he reminded himself silently. Of course, he was concerned where Ranuin was right now...but panicking when there was nothing more he could do at the moment wouldn't help.

He responded instead, "...he is?" sounding surprised, then in a rush, "I mean...of course he is." After half a chuckle, he shook his head. "No, I'm kidding. He's energetic and enthusiastic...but he's a good kid," he nodded in agreement, picking up a few more pieces of trail mix. "I'm sure he's fine," he said again, more for himself than Celestia. "I wasn't sure in the beginning how this would all turn out, but...I've tried to teach him a few things. I think I succeeded, despite the odds. I'm sure he's taking care of himself...wherever he is." This whole...'father' thing was hard, and he'd had no illusions that it wouldn't be. He hadn't exactly been trying to have kids, but when they came along, well...he didn't think he'd make a great father...but hopefully he hadn't been a terrible one either.

Elaborating with a sad smile, he added, "I try to take him out sometimes to the surrounding forests, teach him a bit about foraging and surviving, just the basics mind you. 'Course, I can't teach him much about hunting, but aside from that," he shrugged. "He's more of a homebody than I am, but he does seem to like our trips together. Even if he's eager to get back to the Tree after some time." Those trips were some of the closest times they spent together.

Pausing, he glanced towards Celestia, then back down. "He has a sister too. Not sure if you've seen her around the Tree, but...she looks much like he does, only with more of my coloring," he said with a sad smile again, leaning on his knee. "Ayala. She's more her mother's daughter though, so we don't have the time together that Ranuin and I do," he finished, the implication clear that he didn't seem to see her as much as his son. The truth was, Faroth wasn't much for staying in one place all the time. He'd rather keep exploring, which is why he divided his time between Laisidhiel and the rest of Telrunya. He hadn't even spent that much time back at the Great Tree for a while, until the kids had arrived. Then, he'd ended up staying to help out for the most part. Now that they were nearly grown though, he was hoping to get to spend more time out on the main isle again, catch up with some old friends. Honestly, he'd love it if they showed the same enthusiasm and would travel with him...but, he wasn't sure it was likely.

If Ranuin ever wanted to go anywhere ever again after this trip, that was.

Oh, oops, she hadn't meant to worry him with the topic, it was just the first thing that had come to mind. At least he didn't seem to hold it against the princess, if anything, maybe talking about it out loud was calming? Maybe? "I would certainly agree that is true, just as certain as I am that he is doing fine. Probably even better than us, I might think." It was hard to top being buried underground and being chased by poisonous spiders into a harem room. Then again, she didn't want to think about how it might have gone worse.

Glancing down to her hands, she was saddened to notice them empty, but rather than reach for more nuts, she lightly clasped them together. "The Tree really is a wondrous place; even if it is not my Equestria, being away from it here is difficult. Or..." she chuckled lightly, "...perhaps it is simply the circumstance making it feel so."

Her head tilted in his direction, curiosity piqued. Oh, so he had two children? That was a surprise, though not as much of one as she might have thought. It was not strange to have multiple children in a family. "Ah... No, I cannot recall having seen another wolf-child. Or a she-wolf. Though, if she is your child, she must be just as kind as you and your son, even if you do not spend as much time with her." A small pause before the princess continued, "Why not bring your mate along with you to spend time with your daughter then? I have always enjoyed time with the whole of my family, though..." she pouted and her tone took a sadder tone, "...as of late, I have not seen much of any of them... My fault, really..." Celestia had, after all, become more than a bit of a recluse after the spirit's vision.

When she returned, boy were Luna and the triplets going to be receiving one hell of a hug, and those children of Amor and Shining's would be spoiled rotten to make up for lost time!

Faroth could only hope that Ranuin was doing better than they were. Before that thought could stray to anywhere strange, he added to himself, that if Raina couldn't get to him to help, she'd go to his son next. The pair of them would be fine.

The...circumstance? He supposed she must have meant the circumstances that lead to them having to leave their home and travel to a new one. He could understand that much, even if he'd never experienced anything similar. "I like to travel, myself," he offered with an understanding nod. "However, the Tree has always been there for me to go back to. If suddenly it wasn't..." He shook his head. "I honestly don't know how I'd deal with something like that. I think that you and your people have accomplished something amazing, adjusting to a new place so quickly. I know it's not home as you knew it, but...nice to think that maybe, it'll feel like home some day, if it doesn't already."

Returning to their discussion about family, Celestia inadvertently started down a path that caused Faroth to shift uncomfortably, keeping his eyes downcast. He flushed a bit, reaching up to push his hair back from his face. "Err...honestly, I'm flattered you'd think so without even meeting her. Heh...thanks..." He shook his head now. "But err...their mother...isn't exactly my mate. I mean...not really." He wasn't sure why he seemed so defensive about the fact; it was more...personal shame than anything that had come from outside. He pushed past it to add a different explanation, "Besides, that's part of the issue. I like to travel, but...I'm not sure they like leaving Laisidhiel as much. I can get Ranuin to come with me to the isle once in a while, but he always wants to hurry back home the longer we stay away. And after coming from so far away, finding a long-lost home they hadn't even known of, well...I can see why Chika wouldn't want to leave now that she's settled in. A bit like the story of your people, I suppose, now that I think about it...in some ways. And Ayala, like I said, spends more time with her mom, so, I suppose that makes sense." He was rambling now and he knew it. He needed to turn the attention off of himself and focused on what Celestia had just said. "Well, there will be plenty of time to spend with family when we get back," he said with a smile, trying to add some encouragement to the conversation.

She nodded, a little wary about the mentions of her homeland, even though she'd been the one to bring it up. "Yes, I suppose we have..." the princess commented softly, almost as if it were a question. Had they really adjusted so quickly, it was all quite novel to her?

Blinking, she flicked a look in his direction, feeling a bit bad about accidentally making him uncomfortable. How was she to known it was a touchy subject, though, perhaps she should have noticed when he spoke of his daughter. Though... she had to bite her lip from smiling as he spoke of the mother. Not his mate? They weren't mates? Yes, this did make her a bit confused, but, not just about the circumstance. No, she was also confused about why that make her want to smile so badly. Why did it make her... happy...? It was not as if it affected her in any way whether or not he had children, or a mate, or whatnot...

Better to take a different approach in the conversation before he noticed anything. "I was unaware that others had come before us in a similar manner," as she talked, her mood seemed to have improved, despite her trying to hide it, "Perhaps I shall try to speak with one of them when we return; I might like that very much."

Arms reaching to wrap around her knees, she nodded as she repeated softly, "Yes... When we return..."

Faroth nodded, the ghost of a smile touching his face. "Yes, quite a few, though I suppose less than from Equestria. There was a call sent out to all Faun; surprisingly, a few lost brethren heard and answered," he chuckled softly. He glanced at Celestia sideways, a touch of amusement in his expression. "I think that could probably be arranged. Maybe talk to your sister...Advisor Mo is one of them. As is our Captain of the Rangers...and Chieftain Rais' wife, Belvah." He chuckled, grinning. "I'd say they integrated themselves quite well."

He could have left it at that, but for some reason, he continued, "Chika was one of those too." He glanced down. "There was a massive storm after they first arrived, then afterwards, there was a lot of work to be done. Everyone pitched in, and I tried to help her settle in; we worked together in the clean-up effort." The awkwardness returned, but for some reason, he felt compelled to try to explain. Personal reasons maybe...he didn't want the princess getting the wrong idea...maybe thinking badly of him, or getting the wrong idea. Maybe such things were generally acceptable, but...it wasn't the type of man he was, not normally.

Besides, it wasn't as if most of the Faun who knew any of them didn't already know this story. It wasn't a secret.

"We were friends," he explained with a shrug, "but, that was all. I thought. Then, we went to this party, a harvest festival thing, and we may have had a few drinks and some things happened..." He trailed off, dropping his head in shame with a sigh. His mind started wandering involuntarily back towards the other room and the activities they'd seen, and he hurried to continue. "There was some panic when the kids came along. Didn't know what to do, what she expected, what we'd become. I started staying at the Tree again to help out. As time passed though, some of the panic faded. No one seemed all that concerned with our situation, and while the kids were...rather unique...they were accepted by the community like any other in time." He smiled a bit finally, his head still down. "That was a relief. So, all that was left was to figure out where we stood. But, she didn't push me for anything. We've got the kids, and she's a sweet Faun and a good mother, but..." he shrugged slightly, resting his chin on his arm. "We're just friends really."

"I just..." he hesitated, then shook his head. "That's not the type of guy I am, really. Something happened and I made a mistake. Of course, the kids mean everything, and I love them both very much. And in a way, I care very much for their mother too. Just...not like that, not the way I think one should for a 'mate'," he explained, scratching his head. "Honestly, I think things could have turned out much worse, and I'm thankful that they didn't. I think it worked out quite well in the end...even if...well, it's still a bit embarrassing to try to explain sometimes..."

"Oh, are they...?" the princess asked with regards to Mo and Belvah, not having known that. It almost made her a bit sad that one of her closer friends would not have explained how similar they had been, situationally, but she was sure there were reasons for it. Even if it was just that it no longer was of importance.

It would have taken all the effort in the world to stifle the princess's laugh, so she only tried very lightly to tone it down, moving after a few moments to wipe some tears from her eyes. "So, even long ago these parties have been known to cause such things? Surely we should have been warned before Valentine's of this, if only as a precaution..." Yes... That night seemed to come back to her mind, freshly. Even now, despite everything, the memory was as clear and as innocent as it had been during the time. "My sister dearest had a situation similar to yours, though, in present time, quite more humorous." Again she laughed lightly. "The little ones still refer to them mother as a motherly-figure. It is quite endearing, really. I would never think that having a child as a misfortune."

"My own situation was really quite different..." her tone trailed off. Only her sister, the seer, and the chieftain and his wife knew about what had happened to the princess that day. What it implied. What came as a result.

What came as a result...

That day, one might say, was the true cause of the visions. Without it, there would have been no bond, no need to explain the distrust of the blood pae. Would it make a difference to tell him? If he was willing to admit this much... Why did she want to tell him anyways?

Maybe if he asked... Maybe she could bring herself to let it out...

Even if it was at his expense, the princess' laughter was still a pleasant sound and Faroth even chuckled a bit himself. He supposed that his situation wasn't so unique really. He did feel a bit better though when she clarified the source of her amusement. "Oh yeah...I did hear about that. I wondered why we saw so little of the Advisor for a while," Faroth laughed, shaking his head. "I mean, it's not like this sort of thing happens all the time. Not all events are bad or result in such unexpected things happening, which is why they're still unexpected, I suppose..." he trailed off, trying to think of an event he'd attended where something strange hadn't happened. And finding none, decided perhaps he'd leave that statement alone afterall.

"No, the children certainly are not. They're a joy, even if they weren't planned for," he agreed, tension relaxing somewhat now that his explanation was out in the open and she seemed accepting of it all. He hadn't been sure, coming from a strange land, what their customs may have been there, but he supposed, he should have remembered that though different, something similar had happened to her sister as well. Surely she'd understand.

Then, he focused on the last thing she's just said, noting the sudden shift in tone. Her 'own situation'? They'd just been talking about surprise children resulting from strange island parties and events...and now she was referring to her own situation? Faroth raised an eyebrow, looking up in curiosity. "Your...own situation?" he said aloud. Maybe he shouldn't ask, but...she'd...sort of brought it up now. "I don't understand. What situation?" He hesitated; far as he knew, she didn't have any kids...right? Wouldn't someone have noticed? He knew he was oblivious sometimes, but he thought he would have heard at least...

"Not all are affected in the same manner or by the same things, when they are affected at all," the princess noted, bringing her legs closer to her body and glancing away. Her mouth opened, then closed, as she seemed to be fighting with herself over if she should continue or not. It wasn't as thought she hadn't decided to, didn't want to, just... that actually doing it, saying it, made it no easier.

Especially since this would be the first time telling someone whom hadn't been particularly close to, nor affected by, it. Not directly, at least.

Closing her eyes, she began with her story, hoping that maybe by doing this, he might not see the various emotions it brought. "It was not long after our arrival, and, mind you, at this time I felt hardly a connection more to the tree than I did to the whole of this land. It was all rather strange and unknown to me... As it was for each of us, surely..." Biting her lip, she continued, "When it came to be time for the ball, a great many of my subjects were excited to be finding others to attend with, and many wished I do the same. Rather than have a date, I was invited to be escorted by a new acquaintance of mine at the time."

"He was not of the tree, though, but of the greater land. An angel. Aquos," even now, she spoke his name warmly. "Perhaps you have seen him..? At the cave, that time with Earthmother... He was present... The one with whom I spoke... Large, blue wings and a silver halo..."

Her tone trailed off and she shook her head, "Sorry, I appear to have sidetracked. I was escorted to the ball by this acquaintance of mine, when, as I am sure you are aware, we were sent into the most horrific of mazes. It was quite frightening, really, even now..." A pause. "...in our attempt for freedom, we made our way, leaving my sister, my niece... each to themselves... Like Luna and Mo, we were subjugated to the arrows of one of the gods..."

"The results were far less noticeable, but... In my feeling, far worse..."

Her hand moved to rest on her chest, palm against her heart where the golden thread had formed long ago. "One who has never experienced the feeling of having one's soul bound to another cannot hope to understand how it is to have it done unwillingly" Her voice cracked some and she leaned forward, resting her forehead against her knees, shaking her head. "I am sorry... You do not need to be hearing all of this... Of all the fey, you are the first outside of the circle and Luna to know..."

Faroth listened patiently, arms looped loosely around his knees. He hadn't expected her to open up to him like this about herself, but...then again, he hadn't expected to be giving her his own history as well, so the day was just full of surprises, wasn't it?

He had no idea apparently of the scope of those surprises. Eyes widening, he waited until she paused to speak, so as not to interrupt. "I...think I remember him, yes, but...are you saying...that you're married?" It had taken him a moment to put the words together. He'd heard something of these strange arrows and their mystic powers, including the abilities to apparently change a Pae's gender as well as leading to children. But...binding souls? They could do that?

"I...didn't even know such a thing was possible. I thought, it had to be something agreed between the couple. Something planned on and-" he broke off, realizing that his rambling probably wasn't helping things when he saw Celestia's sorrowful posture. Unsure how to backstep, he reached out...hesitated...then lightly placed his hand on her shoulder as a gesture of comfort. "I'm...so sorry. I didn't think. There are so few who have taken that step that I know of, that I just never thought about it before, and I spoke without thinking. Please, though...it's alright. I mean, if you want to talk about it only, of course. If you don't want to, it's...not really my place to ask or anything."

Her head shook, a sigh escaping her lips. "No... no longer... The spirits ensured that such a thing would not remain..." there was a blatant bitterness about the spirits, as there often seemed to be. "It is no surprise you were unaware; even Rais himself was startled by the notion that two could be bound without choice; a faun and an angel at that. Apparently, this was the first time anything of that scope had happened..."

"Do not apologize, I am the one who spoke, the one who told you and offered you explanation... That continues it..."

Biting her lip, she continued. Even Luna was unaware of this. "Surely you are aware of the eggs that were taken by many after the ball. Aquos came to have one..." she smiled warmly, thinking back on the memory, "...he named the little chick Skyla. We raised her together, if only in sporadic bursts so as to not raise suspicion from those in the tree. Even then... It felt shameful... but..." a few tears formed at the edge of her eyes. "Even without that sort of love, we were still a family..."

"My best friend worried of how the soul-binding might affect me if any in the tree were to learn of it and searched for a way to break the contract. She... No... The spirits gave me a vision of the past... Of the blood pae..." she shook her head. "It robbed my innocence, my family. It ensured I could never again speak with them in the same manner. I sought out one of the gods to break the bond... alone... Since that day, I have not had contact with either of them; surely they hate me... But..." her voice cracked as the tears started running down her cheeks. "Even if it was not love... Why was I filled with such emptiness as it ended...?"

Her hand clenched against her chest, shoulders shaking, "Why will the loneliness not disappear...?" She looked up, away, asking to the darkness, "What have I done to deserve such a thing...?"

This was a lot to absorb. A husband...a child...if not in the traditional sense. Breaking of bonds thought unbreakable. Perhaps, since it was not the same as a true binding of souls, it was possible to undo, yet...it seemed it still carried a price for those involved. And what was this of visions of the past and Blood Pae?

"I...I don't know what to say," he finally answered, withdrawing his hand from her shoulder. However, he only did so long enough to move the trail mix back to their pack, then move both it and the lantern out of the way before shifting position. Maybe it wasn't appropriate. Maybe it wasn't even going to have the desired effect. But, Faroth couldn't just sit and listen while a woman cried. Just because she wouldn't let him see, didn't mean he couldn't hear it in her voice.

Their belongings out of the way, he moved closer and wrapped an arm around her shoulders. Even if she ended up rejecting the gesture, she sounded like she could really use a hug about now. "I don't know what to say, because I don't know that anyone 'deserves' such a thing. But, I can try to offer what I think," he said quietly. "I think that there are different kinds of love, as well as different kinds of family. There's the family that we're born to, the family that joins us along the way, and the 'family' that we select on our own, in the form of our best friends and confidants."

"The Faun of Laisidhiel are my family, in spirit if not blood. Doesn't mean I care for them any less because of that. And my kids, mine by blood. I love them completely and always will. I care as well for their mother...if not in the way one does a mate, still deeply for blessing me with and helping me raise such wonderful children," he said warmly. "But there are still others. Maybe not family in the traditional sense, I've made connections on the isle as well, those that I care for and would protect if the opportunity arose. I'd like to consider them 'family', though there is nothing more between us than the connections we've built as friends." He dared a glanced towards Celestia, even if she remained turned away. "All kinds of family; all kinds of love. None of which are the equivalent of the one I feel is required for a step such as marriage, yet, that does not make them any less valid. Does not mean I'd be any less affected if these bonds were...were severed," he finished, some difficulty if only when considering the weight of what he was saying. The possibility was a frightening one.

With a sigh, he shifted gears, "I'm not saying that what you did was wrong. Certainly not. There's nothing that says you couldn't care for these Pae as your family. However, it was also not a fair situation that you were put into either. To be bound to another, essentially a stranger....it sounds...terrifying," he admitted honestly. 'Even if you grew to know each other better afterwards, to have your soul bound to someone you didn't love and didn't even know at the time..." He squeezed her shoulder lightly in the semblance of a hug, dropping his voice so low, he could have been speaking to himself. "...you poor thing."

Feeling his hand leave her shoulder, she turned to look at him, biting her lip and averting her eyes as cuts on his neck and cheek poured blood onto his collarbone. Damn this godforsaken curse, if it would just end already...

Before she could swear more, internally of course, the princess felt the presence of his hand return, if on the other shoulder this time. Her body seemed to act on its own, moving to rest her head in the nook of his shoulder, her eyes closing so that she did not have to worry about looking elsewhere. Unlike earlier as she had fallen asleep on him, this time she was very acutely aware of his presence: the soft breathing as he spoke, the smell of his skin, the feeling of his pulse with each of his heart's beats. For whatever reason, he was doing wonders to calm her. Whether or not the words were true or just spoken out of empathy, they stopped the tears and the sadness. "I believe the worst part is that no pae was the wiser about it. You are the first to know about Skyla; it seemed unnecessary, degrading information to tell anyone else, considering I shall likely never see her again."

"Though... I believe that I did truly love her as I might my own child at the time. Luna cannot possibly imagine the envy I felt towards her when the triplets were borne..."

A small laugh escaped her lips as she shook her head, her skin rubbing against Faroth's. "Perhaps I simply was using Aquos as Skyla as a means to try and compete with my sister, to pretend I had something as dear to me as she had to her. Out of jealously rather than love. That may be the reason Vanya insisted I look to the past to decide if I could truly continue such a life..."

"Have you heard of the Faun's Final Stand, as it is called...?"

Faroth was mildly surprised when instead of rejecting his gesture of comfort, or at best, silently tolerating it, Celestia turned towards him instead. There was nothing inappropriate about the gesture at all; simply one friend comforting another. He let himself smile after a bit, realizing she'd stopped crying at the least. That was something he could feel he'd helped with.

He still couldn't understand the way she seemed to view her relationship with these Pae'il as something to hide. Alright, being married to someone against your will is rather...strange, unnerving, upsetting, take your pick. But still, not your fault. Why be ashamed of letting others know of your connection to them? "I can imagine they might be a bit upset with you, if only for vanishing without saying anything for so long...but if they're really family, they'll forgive that. You can always still visit, right?" He still didn't understand her reluctance. It couldn't be just pride, could it?

But it seemed, she'd something more to share. Ears perking at the Seer's name, he slipped back into attentive-listener mode. "The Final Stand?" He frowned, shaking his head slightly. "No, at least, not anything by that name specifically." He wasn't completely clueless regarding Faun history. At least, not since growing up. He'd learned the mistake in not paying attention as a youngster, so when older, he'd picked up a few things just by keeping his ears open and in the right places.

The fireside induction ceremony for the new Council members had been an eye-opening experience. It'd raised more questions than answers for the simple Faun, leaving him conflicted at first when he'd left that meeting. Stories of an ancient war, of Blood Pae turning on the Ancients, seeking to wipe them out. They had survived, but at a high price, only now able to rejoin the greater Isle.

Faroth had been torn at first between the loyalty to his people and the new friends he'd made on the Isle. Surely these weren't the same Pae talked about in old stories about war and treachery. Many that he'd talked to hadn't even heard of a war long ago with the ancients. And many had no idea what he even was at first, so they certainly didn't recognize him as some sort of 'ancient enemy' or whatever. Surely, the barbaric nature of the war was ancient history, destined to stay that way?
