The only thing that had kept her from throttling Finres on the boat to Eowyn had been the company they kept. Although she was teetering on the edge of being named Expert and having permission to do whatever she liked, she doubted that included nearly murdering family members in public. Word would surely get out, and she refused to be the subject of more gossip than she already was. Instead, she held her tongue, relying on Thren's overabundance of cheerfulness to keep her under control.
It was a completely different story once they had reached their destination.
"If you don't shut your weepy, useless mouth, I am going to take control of your blood and walk you into this volcano." Eanah briefly wondered if she might one day have the power to actually do that, but the thought fled as her drakein let out a croaking laugh.
"She will kill you, little sister. Kiiiiiiilllllll yooooooooouuuuuuuuuu..."
Eanah knew she should stop him. She also knew Thren was just fooling around. Even if he hadn't been, the expression on her sister's face was too delightful to make reassuring her in a timely manner an option. The mage turned and stepped up onto a higher level of rock. She hadn't been sure what to make of Kaiatasel when they had arrived, but beyond being unbearably warm, it had proven to be quite an interesting trek. She barely even minded that they hadn't come across any dragons yet.
"Make him stop!" Finres wailed as Thren continued his low cackling.
"He's not doing anythi—"
Her exasperated scolding was cut short as a deafening screech commanded everyone's attention. A large, angry Firani winged out of the wavering heat, bellowing another warning. Finres's blubbering increased tenfold, but she did nothing to protect herself, falling to the ground and staring up at the beast instead. She presented an enticingly easy target, which was why the dragon began winging its way toward her.
"Idiot," Eanah muttered. "Thren!"
She began gathering power before her drakein reached her side, finding that for some reason, she didn't really need him at all. The amount of power she was drawing on her own was immense, enough to lift her hair an inch or so away from her scalp and make the tips of her fingers numb. It frightened her in an abstract sort of way, but instead of tying off her spell or cowering like Finres, Eanah embraced the wild wave of dark energy and sent it hurtling toward the Firani. The creature screamed again as a bolt of fire knocked it out of the sky. A moment later, the world around them was eerily silent.
Eanah knew she had to get back to the Sanctuary as soon as possible to find out what was going on, but she wasn't leaving without her orb.
"Come on," she told her sister as she moved toward the downed dragon. She didn't wait for a response.
