Roland's boots crunched along the ground as he moved through the abandoned town. Sylvia was resting easily over his shoulder as he explored the area designated as his first match. Window pane glass crunched gently under toe as he moved through a building watching the windows, he saw her then. Standing in a road.

The next thing she would hear is the sound of glass crackling as Roland took a running leap from the window Silvya held above his head arching down in a quick slash.

"Hey! You must be Reine!"

The towns were barely recognisable now- never mind that the last time Reine had been here had been... more than a whole year ago, and she couldn't see past the fog anyway. Was it... Dakota she had wandered in here with? Who'd called it a date?

Ah, Dakota. Hopefully he was doing better in the dating department now..

Pausing in the middle of the street, Reine looked out ahead of her, reminiscing; there was that other time, when the three of them--

Heavy footsteps- someone running at her- cut her off, and she barely had time to react, clumsily summoning her weapon and holding it above her, before the guy attacked. Stunned by the force of the blow, it was all she could do to keep standing, Alynthe the only thing between her and something very sharp and distinctly unpleasant.

With a small growl, Reine made a quick slash at him- that missed- as she hopped backwards, keeping some distance between them and buying herself a little more time to recover.

"Correct." Eyes narrowed, she took the small moment of reprieve to size up her opponent. So this was 'Roland Taft'.

The hit was good, maybe not accurate, or clean the girl had after all summoned her weapon before he could finish getting the jump on her. Still it worked pretty good.

She had cleared the distance between them, her sword thin and nimble. Quick and pointy was it's game. Still Sylvia had her own unique tricks if need be. < Shall we dance? >

Sylvia only responded with a song.

It was a slow haunting song, heavy notes that signified each heavy swing as Roland moved forward scythe not spinning end over end but swinging in wide, hard slashes across, down, up, across. Back the other way. He could win with one solid strike, breaking the guard of the nimble weapon.

A small hiss of annoyance as she raised the swordbreaker again to deflect the hit; this guy was going all out on her, and she really should kick it up a notch, too. Roland's attacks were coming at her from all directions, and if she blocked one hit, the next caught her- it was simply impossible to keep up a defense.

Roland had to give it up to her, she had a tendency to block some of his blows, the latest set however had been taxing on both of them. Wild swing after wild swing slowed Roland down, it was less moving one motion to the next and more a series of harsh heavy swings with a sudden change of direction.

Mixing it up again he stepped back making space, pinwheeling Sylvia end over end in a whirlwind of smaller light cuts. All the while they moved through the abandoned streets.

Sometimes it wasn't that you were weak; it was that they were simply stronger.

Excuses, the apophis hissed. If they are stronger; you have to be even better.

Roland's attacks seemed almost effortless; swinging the scythe at her over and over again, she barely noticed any change in.... no, wait- he was slowing down. It was a brief window, and she hated that she had to take a chance on a hit; ducking low, Reine darted inwards as he swung the scythe wide, and slashed. She could feel the hit connect- that was all that mattered. Slowly, hit by hit.. if she could just keep going.

He saw it just before it happened, Sylvia glided across moving form his right hand to his left, a shift from one side to the other that left him wide open below the waist and the other hunter had seen it too. Even as Sylvia came across and into his hand he started to step back feeling the narrow blade bite at his side.

He didn't have time for another swing, he lashed out with a boot kicking at Reine to drive distance between them once more.

"Well... there goes the advantage of my first attack..."

She never quite understood chatting during battles; it seemed all the more an affront to her, that they weren't taking this seriously, and yet still coming out on top. Even with that one blow she'd landed, she'd taken a fair bit of damage; despite the shield from her weapon, her arms were smarting from the blows.

All or nothing, Alynthe trilled.

Another slash, as she moved in for an attack; one that cut through thin air.

This battle was not going in her favour.

Roland kept his eyes on the other hunter. Even though he was speaking he was taking the fight very seriously. It was starting to waver, what had started entirely for him was slowly slipping. Sylvia continued to sing and Roland took to pacing in a small circle around the other hunter as she lashed out with another strike.

It was quick and from an awkward spot, he couldn't get Sylvia's blade around in time, nor would breaking her apart help. Instead he lashed out with her back end, not pointed, but still solid enough to thump the other hunter.

Circling; like a vulture. Roland was watching her every move, but she wasn't roadkill quite yet; there was no way she was just going to let him control the fight, keep her fenced in with his movements.

The second he moved in to attack, Reine tried to dodge- the scythe grazed her, still, but he'd left an opening for her; and she took it, landing another solid hit, slashing at him as hard as she could before darting away again.

The blade lashed out and across again biting at his arm as he moved to shield the bulk of his body. The streets where empty and the houses too far on either side to give him any hope of putting distance and resetting the tempo.

He didn't have a choice he took Sylvia in two hands twisting and tugging the scythe in half, the chain spilling out it's inside glowing with runes along the links. He only had a moment to spin up the bladed half before sending it flying wild at Reine before jumping back tugging the blade back to his hand.

Well hiding Sylvia's alternate way of fighting was now out of the bag and he hadn't even hit hard with it.

The ******** was that. Reine watched, with some amount of morbid fascination, still crouched on the ground with the swordbreaker held out in front of her, as the other trainee bust out.. some kind of chain?

Why can't you do that, eh?

Her weapon merely sniffed, and Reine shrugged; there was little time to be thinking about how fancy your opponent's weapon was. Besides, fancy on its own didn't do much, and even though the chains had slapped her in the face, leaving a stinging mark, they hadn't hit all that hard. Momentary distraction aside, she tried to refocus, aiming straight for the head this time as she moved in to attack again.

She was fast.

Before Sylvia was back in his hand she was dashing forward blade aimed at his face. He twisted to the side knocking her arm a bit, the blow caught his shoulder instead but he did nothing that could be called retaliation for the blow. Jumping backwards again he tried to get some high ground on a pile of rubble.

She followed relentlessly, moving onto the pile of rubble and darting past him to strike from the back instead. Weak though the attack was, she felt a small thrill when the hit connected; little by little, she reminded herself. It was better than nothing.

Except a little's never enough, Alynthe pointed out. I need more. The apophis was starting to get agitated, she could feel; twisting and turning in her mind, hungry.
