Hijil was always wary about the hunting part of hunting and gathering. It took time, thought, and effort and there was no guarantee of success or that you wouldn't have to fight another predator for your prey. Being alone and without backup and weapons (aside from her formidable fists), she avoided it whenever possible. But sometimes you just needed to find yourself some meat and fur, and so she was stalking prey in the jungles of Jahuar. She was hopeful about this large meaty bug. It was an edible bug and could provide her food for some time. She decided to wait a bit longer, though. It did, after all, have defences and, being alone, she didn't want to risk getting too injured. Not if she wanted to live anyway. She stalked closer, somehow managing to compress her large frame into something stealthy. She did not expect to have any human company today.

Rayolun, in one of his increasing less visits to the jungle, was out hunting. There were very few reasons to leave his lovely coast and the ocean, Gerrarden and Lasarra being the very few reasons to leave. His uncle and non fishy food were the other reasons. As much as he loved the sea and fish, it got rather tiring eating fish after awhile, so he would venture back into the jungles for meat and fruit.
On this day, as he was stalking a Maglardilla and came across a much larger female shifter attempting to hunt it as well. Smiling o himself, Rayolun crouched upon a branch above her, watching to see how this rather ungainly hunter did.

Hijil stalking was like an elephant on tiptoe. It looked bizzare, but somehow, it was working. She moved slowly and low, stalking closer and closer before stopping to gather herself. It hadn't noticed her yet, and she wanted to keep it that way up until she needed to kill it. There was no reason to give the poor creature any more fear and suffering than what was necessary. She wasn't trying to cause it pain, just eat it. She tensed. She would have to grab it, hold it down, and kill it quickly. She wasn't sure if she could do so, but she would have to try. Like an arrow loosed from a bow, the unlikely predator pounced from cover at the maglardilla, hands outstretched to slam the insect into the ground and, hopefully, end its suffering with her own weight. She was unlucky, her outstretched palms slamming into empty ground and taking her weight with a solid thud. The maglardilla stared at her with startled eyes and flittered off into the brush, faster than she could react. She watched it go, then, with a burst of effort, stood up and brushed herself off. Well, thats how it goes.

Rayolun shook his head. He wasn't sure how she did it, but somehow she managed to be quiet.. not graceful, but still silent. He shook his head s she missed. So close! The Maglardilla fluttered right by him as it fled from her so with a smile he grabbed it with lightning reflexes and slit it's throat quickly. A simple kill. Standing up he hopped down to her level and offered it to her.
"Nice try. I was certain you'd alert it to your presence but surprisingly you didn't." He said softly.

Hijil braced herself, but it was only a fellow shifter, not something she should worry about. Particularly since he did not appear to be hunting her.
She watched as the maglardilla's life bled away- a more efficient and- probably- painless method, and gave Rayolun an appreciative and respectful bow of her head. "Good Catch." she said, smiling mildly, "Your kill." she said, holding her hand out in polite refusal. It was his kill- she wasn't going to take it from him. She could find another prey if she had to- he needed it too, she was sure. She inclined her head to receive the compliment, her smile strengthening. She was pleased at the compliment, but didn't feel like outwardly expressing the warmth it gave her. She did work hard on the sneaking thing, after all. "Probably more in the area...?" she said, not quite hopefully.

Smiling at her he dropped down to the ground next to her. "You almost caught it so we'll split it. No need for one of us to go hungry. Hunters share when they help each other." He meant what he said. There had been plenty of times another hunter had benefited from him missing a kill, but they had always shared or offered part of the kill to him. So he would do the same. "And there are always more of these guys around. They're everywhere, though can be difficult to catch sometimes. I haven't run into you before. Do you live near here in one of the villages or are you just moving from place to place?" He asked curiously. Lately he'd become more interested in people. Before, all he really liked was hunting and solitude. But he could get that out at sea. Now that he was inland, he wanted to talk a bit more, maybe get to know people.

Well, if he was so adamant about it, Hijil was willing to let him share the kill with her. She was stubborn, but not foolish- help was offered, and she might as well accept. "Let us continue hunting, then" she said. Because if they split it, then it would truly be a mere morsel for both of them. Two of the creatures would be better. She started to move onwards, keeping her voice low. It had been a long span of solitude. Too long. And though she still feared discovery by her own kind as the horrible monster she was, like the generous portion he offered, she would not turn down interaction when offered, either. "Not in a village, no." she answered, her voice low so as not to spook prey, "I do move often. Not too far." She knew the area around here well enough to not want to leave. It had what she needed- lots of food, good shelter, and isolation. "And you?"

Rayolun followed the girl, keeping above her on higher branches to keep an eye out for prey higher in trees. "Mmm, don't live anywhere really. Just move around hunting and occasionally run into people I know." he whispered back before pausing and motioning her to stillness. Had that been movement he'd spotted further ahead and up? "Saw something." He muttered before silently dashing along the limb and leaping to another tree, which he proceeded to scale up quickly. Maybe it was some more food!

Hijil crouched, trying to see what he had seen. She glanced up at his swift movement, and frowned. Something up, and ahead? WEll, she couldn't see it, but that didn't mean it wasn't there yet.
His life sounded a lot like her own, minus the terrible burden on her shoulders and her fear that others would know of it. Clearly, he did not.
Hijil jumped to a branch a ways ahead and took her time climbing up a few levels, trading speed for silence. If there was something up ahead, she could try to cut it off. Or, if it was a predator, at least serve as a surprising backup for the other shifter. She hid among the leaves- he was too adept at camouflage for her to see, but he was likely around- and tried again to look for whatever prey he might have seen.

He crawled up carefully until he'd gotten above the place he'd seen movement. He smiled when he saw the nice sized Sumudu, that'll be enough to feed us both with the Maglardilla's meat. Rayolun lurked in the branches above and watched Hijil move silently about. He shook his head in amazement; she didn't look like she should bee able to move quietly but she did. He waited until she was opposite and beneath the Sumudu, Rayolun dropped down from his branch towards critter, calling out," Scaring a Sumudu your way!" He probably could have tried to capture it himself, but he'd gotten the last one, so he felt it was only fair is he scared this one and let her catch it.

Hijil had no idea herself how she could move so quietly. Practice? Careful weight distribution? Breaking the laws of physics?
Either way, the sumudu - partially because of its distraction of the enemy above - did not notice her until, in its flight, it ran right into her. She grabbed it and, struggling, managed to subdue it.
Which left one step remaining.
Killing it.
She dispatched it awkwardly - by accident really. She had only meant to stun it until the other shifter could help her out. It looked so difficult to kill, all plated and cryptic and hard-looking. But yet, it had taken a well placed punch to destroy it.
Life, she realized, was very fragile. Disturbingly so. It was very obvious - to her - that she had not often tried to get meat for herself.
"Got it." she called towards Rayolun.

DraconicFeline I am assuming she killed the beastie with her fists yes? Rayolun landed with a soft thud and watched her dispatch it with her fists. He smiled and shook her head. That wouldn't do at all! He climbed down the tree towards her and walked over, pulling out a small stone knife from his belt. "Next time, use this. I have extras. A sharp blade will cut through the shells and you don't have to hurt your fists beating it up." He offered the knife to her hilt first. Her blows had been slightly awkward so maybe she was not used to killing? He nodded to the sumudu, "Do you know how to skin them? If not, I can show you how."This one is recently from a village, gotta be, despite saying she wasn't in a village. Why else would she have such an awkward way of killing an animal and not have a knife or any weapon on her? If she was claiming to not be in one.. maybe she had left in a not so good situation? "You... you do not act as a lone hunter does, you act far more like the villagers do. You sure you should be out here? Not all the villagers who try and strike out on their own make it." Usually a lone hunter like himself ran across them and did their est to take them back to the villages if they looked to be unable to survive out in the wilderness. His uncle had done that a few times when he'd still been small and traveling with him. This one had some good practices already, knew how to move quietly and could kill. But she needed help. If she was to live by herself, then Rayolun thought that he should give her some help before he moved on.

Hijil accepted the shell knife gravely, fiddling with it until it was secured to her belt. She shook her head. "Please. show me." she said. She was embarrassed at her failure to understand these seemingly basic things. Of course you don't eat animals with their skin on. Or did you? Or did you cook the skin separately? She had no idea. She supposed there was no shame in knowing nothing about a food item that you hardly ever ate before.
She was grateful that she had help, though: He was answering the questions that she had not thought to ask, and had not known were there. What other questions, she wondered, should she have asked long ago? What other things should she have learned that she didn't?
She shook her head again. "I can't be there." she said simply, biting her tongue quietly. It wasn't the thought of asking for help that made her nervous. It was just that she couldn't find the words. Words were not easy things for her to use - she didn't like to use too many to say what a few words could easily carry.
"I can't live there. But I don't know how to hunt." she paused "I can," she suggested, "gather plants and roots, and I can make shelter."
She didn't want him to think she was completely ignorant, after all.
"What is a lone hunter supposed to act like?" she asked finally.

He thought on the girls response.Couldn't be there? Something must have gone really wrong! He shrugged; not his business whatever it was. He showed her how to skin the small critter, mentioning that she should always cut away from herself since if she slipped and was cutting towards her own body, she was likely to damage herself. "You aren't as confident. You don't have any weapons. And the way you hunt is rather ungainly." He gave her a small smile to soften the critisim. "It's too dangerous out here for younger people like ourselves to wander aobut unarmed. Not unless you're trained in unarmed combat." After he finished skinning it, he handed the meat to her. " I can show you how to make some traps if you wish. It is a slightly less dangerous way of hunting."

Not cutting herself was definitely something she wanted to accomplish, and she knew that what he taught her would be useful, so she tried to learn all that she could from watching him. She knew, though, that she would have to practice.
She took the meat, not entirely sure what to do with it other than carry it back to her shelter and cook it so that it wouldn't spoil.
"Ungainly?" The rest of his criticisms were completely correct and didn't require comment - she had no weapons and certainly little confidence - but ungainly...? Not that she didn't often feel oversized and strange, especially when sneaking, but was she really as bad as that? "The punching, you mean?" she asked, because that had certainly been awkward to do.
"... yes." she said, smiling gratefully, "Please teach me how to make traps." That sounded more... gainly... than everything else she had tried to do before. Even civilized.
