It was rare that Mimsy opted to go to the training fields, but she found herself at a point in her social study where it appeared as if it might be a requirement. Upon discussing this with Lucky, and discovering that he was in a similar position, they made the drastic decision to replicate their observations on battling.

So here they were.

And it was about to get interesting.

It was best not to think about how the last time they'd seen each other, Mimsy had been standing blood-soaked over her cousin's corpse. And the time before that, if one could call it a time, was possibly even weirder.

This seemed to be the norm here.

"Tactics," he observed dryly, his eyes following as his finger traced down a page of handwritten notes detailing observations from a few days of watching the training field. Theory and practice were two very different beasts.

Analysis was easy.

He had agreed to the study rather quickly. There was none of the hesitation usually attributed to him, the cowardice that made him ill-suited to battle. All that remained as a reminder of what he had given up was a lock entwined around his weapon, sealing away its own purpose. For better or worse. "I believe there is no point to this 'sparring' vithout a variable. Random action is chance. You do not improve from chance... you just test your luck."

"Vell." He closed the notebook and cast it aside, drawing his saw from nothingness with an outstretched hand. He gave Mimsy a small smile, pleasant but distant, as he raised the weapon in a fighting stance he copied off the most successful fighter he'd observed. "After you."

It was least comfortable when she had to strike first - of course, that was what she found herself faced with.

She swung towards him with an attack that barely clipped his shield. Svensyl's smaller size was easier to use now, but the range was very different. Now she had to be close.

She gave him a tentative look and took a step forward.

He attempted a parry as she passed, trying to convert the memory into action. His muscles obliged, barely.

As Mimsy very quickly discovered, blocking attacks with a smaller sword was no longer comfortable either. She made a face of discontent when she realized that this also rendered many of her observations obsolete. There would have to be a great deal of recalculating before the next spar, if this was any indication.

"Regarding variables, I was not prepared for such a drastic shift," she said, making a small gesture towards Svensyl before she swung again.

He traced the diagram of movements in his mind, step step dart leap swipe - Song was almost more eager to strike than Lucky was, tearing her teeth into Mimsy's shield past Svensyl's line of defense.

"Eh..." he paused in his pseudo-assault to regard the weapon, inadvertently leaving himself wide open. He placed a couple fingers on his chin in a gesture of thought, surprising himself one again with the degradation of his appearance. The last time he'd looked in a mirror it had been 5 o'clock shadow at best. It felt like he was a decent part of the way to a full beard now. Finding the time and effort to shave had gradually been dropping down the hierarchy of priority. "I did not observe anyone vith a dagger. That - he is dagger now?"

"A dagger?" Pausing, Mimsy stood up straight and turned the weapon over in her hands. What was he now, exactly? "Um, well. I must regretfully admit that I am uncertain how to categorize him. He was previously a greatsword, so I simply stripped the 'great' from the title in my mind."

She tried a more dagger-like jab, which felt a little more controlled, and made a thoughtful 'hmmm'.

"What is your impression? Sword or dagger?"

There was something very uncomfortably (and apparently paralyzingly) familiar about being gutted by Svensyl.

"Sword-" He was quick to change his answer. "Definitely, sword."

"Oh," said Mimsy, who also found herself a bit taken aback by the apparent change of opinion. She stared at Svensyl again, who was too busy insisting that he was a Vorpal sword, he swore, to actually have any input.

He could have waited, he knew, on some level.

But Song's insistence to keep attacking sent his saw swinging again before Mimsy had any warning.

The sudden attack caught Mimsy off her guard, and she threw her arm in front of her in an attempt to block it, both thankful for her FEAR shield and ashamed that she hadn't thought to do something sensible, like use her weapon to block. Svensyl was jabbed at Lucky again in a confused panic. She felt much more recoil than usual when the edge of his blade connected with Lucky's form, and stared at him with wide eyes. How had he done that?

Clearly she would need to work on improving her mimicry during impulse reactions.

"What was that?" she asked, uneasy. There had been no planning for unaccounted variables, and she didn't like the direction this was going in. She had her fill of trying to correct the mistakes the universe threw at her lately, and was not interested in continuing that trend.

Atop her head was a faint and fading crown, as grey as the fog that was once present on the island. She didn't seem to notice.

The unseen shockwave as their weapons clashed together seemed to surprise Lucky as well. Or maybe it was something else, just above her, that had him so distracted he couldn't even keep his focus. Song's charge dissipated outward in a gust of harmless cold wind.

No matter how much he tried to maintain focus on his opponent, his eyes kept darting upward to the crown. He looked uncertain; he knew exactly where he'd seen that crown before. Nothing good had come of that painting, or that boat.

"What are you looking at?" Mimsy asked, voice panicked. There was no added weight on her head, nothing that felt strange, but Lucky kept glancing at her as if there were something there.

She hastily retaliated, throwing her carefully constructed plans aside to try to get him to stop looking at her like that. None of this was making sense, and the whole point of this exercise was understanding.

A flash of energy dispersed from Svensyl's blade when she attacked, and her grip loosened, eyes wide. That had never happened before.

An excited cackle filled her mind.

<Again, again!>
