Various people had informed her over the first few days of her arrival that the Island was not normally this sunny, that their technology was better, that Abbi had just simply arrived at a bad time. And while the teen was all too eager to smile and bob her head and do her best to look friendly, she quietly dug her nails into her palms because they had promised her better. When they had asked her to join them, the recruiter said it was a place of advancement more than she'd dreamed possible. And to a girl who spent her days watching science videos on YouTube about the most recent and exciting technological advancements (even if she kind of went cross eyed trying to imagine exactly how they worked), the prospect of such a marvelous and forward thinking place was vastly exciting.
But besides receiving her weapon, there had been nothing that had really impressed Abbi.

Not that she would necessarily tell anyone such a thing.
There was too much importance on making friends at this point in time for the girl to bother herself with being honest. At least not 100% honest. A bit of snark every once in a while still went a long way...
Regardless of all that, she had at least been proactive enough to ask for something to do and had been rewarded with a small packet of seeds. Specifically radish seeds for, as the random superior she'd asked for something to do had told her, they would be fully grown in a month. Which, given how they weren't entirely sure how long this bright sun would last, seemed a pretty good plan. Plant it now, hope it grows in a month.
Too bad the sun made Abbi freckle something terrible.

"Stupid sun... Stupid Island with its stupid ultraviolet rays making my melatonin count go up." The teen mumbled as she crouched on a yet unturned piece of ground, a small shovel in her hand that she was attempting to use to dig up a little row to plant her seeds.
"Plant radishes they said! It'll be fun they said!"
{ No one said i'would be fun. }
"No one asked you."
Oh. Burn.

Planting carrots was Cass' given task. She actually liked carrots, though. They were good steamed (barely), baked, cut raw, with ranch - they were fantastic! Potatoes would have been a better bet for versatility, but....... well, they simply took too long, unfortunately. In the middle of her own digging, however, she could hear someone talking not too far off while they worked as well.

" 'ts better than starving, though." Cass had overheard the new hunter - she could tell the girl was new because she had never seen her before. Therefore, she was new. Even if just in her periphery. Plus she didn't have a detailed coat like some people did. Y'know. Like her and her husband. "And enjoy the sun while you can, when it goes away it'll stay away for a long time. I think this is the first time I've seen the sun on this island in over a year." she added.

With that, she shrugged.

Are you being helpful or was that meant to make her work harder?

She shrugged to Nicodemus who seemed to just chuckle in her head - which made Cass laugh a bit out loud. She didn't mean to look like she might be mental, really!

A surprised noise left Abbi when she heard a different voice nearby and she jumped hard enough that she ended up standing, shovel clutched to her chest. Oh! A lady! Wow, how had she missed her when she picked this spot?!
Still, the teen screwed up her mouth in a pout as she let the shovel drop down to her side.
"Yeah, I had one of those MRE's and it was really nasty..." Even if maybe it had partially been because of the boy she had shared the meal with had soured it for her with his bad attitude. Real shame, that was, given how cool he had seemed. But the sun is given a baleful glance that turns to mild dissatisfaction when it turns back to the girl.

"I am totally ok without having to see the sun for over a year. It makes me freckle really badly and I have a hard enough time with people making fun of me for being a ginger without all the added spots." Starting out with a woeful story was totally the way to make friends!

With a small hop forward the girl waved at the woman she'd been talking to.
"Hi! By the way! I'm Abbi! Super duper new here... Your coat is really pretty and intricate..." What had originally been meant as a question instead turned into a compliment that was not quite finished all the way.
At least until the other girl laughed out loud at nothing.
"So does everyone have crazy voices in their head too!?"

Cass looked at her coat. "Oh? Oh. Yeah. This is a hunter-level coat. You'll get one yourself after you put your nose to the grindstone long enough." she smiled. "I'm Cass, Mist-Hunter." she introduced, "And I guess that's one way to look at it." she scratched the scar on her neck as she spoke. "Guess I kind of stopped worrying about those things a while ago."

Scratching the other scar above her right eye, she nodded. "Yeah, that sounds about right. I've got Nicodemus in my head. After a while they can be more helpful than obnoxious, though, if that's what you were wondering." She laughed a bit. "Sometimes not, though. My husband's headvoice is pretty damaging."

"How long is long enough?" Time frames were really good. Especially for a girl who absolutely adored planning, the little black notebook tucked away in her coat pocket positively itching to be written in with this new information. "Not that I mind a long time, or anything. I just mean like... You look really young and if you're top tier but still young that is so awesome." And Abbi wanted to be just like you.
Introductions, however, made her skip a little bit as she shoved a hand out toward the woman.
"I'm Abbi! Moon Hunter! Er, Trainee? Hunter to Be? Hunter In Waiting?" It was important to get these title things right, wasn't it? Couldn't just go bumbling around insulting higher ranking officers accidentally!

The little motions the other girl made caught Abbi's eyes, and she unabashedly followed their little trail. A scar on her neck, a scar on one eye, a few more little nicks here there and probably more hidden by the coat.
{ No one e'er said i'would be easy, lassie. 'Told you that before. }
I know. She just looks so young...
Despite the melancholy way she heard herself speak in her own mind, Abbi turned a tilted smile down to Cass.

"Hi Nicodemus, nice to kind of meet you! And damaging? Damaging how? Like... Mental slaps?" Awww, poor Cass's--
Waitaminuteheywaitwhat.
"You're married!? You can get married here? So it isn't like being a priest woooooow!" That was awesome news.

Cass took a moment to ponder it. "Marcus - my husband, he'll be taking care of you a bit as a moon hunter - made it to Hunter before he turned 20, and I made it to full hunter by about 17 and a half....so...about a year, year and a half?" Even just a moment of thought made her realize just how long she herself had been a hunter. Almost 19. That was how old Marcus had been when they met. Oh, to be young again - hey wait.

"I'm going on 19 now and I became a hunter a little bit after my 16th birthday, so young, considering. Not the youngest though. If you need a shining example, look for Gale in the Death Division. He rose up like the sun and he's younger than I am." She really was impressed with him, even if she barely knew him.

....... In her head, Cass could hear Nicodemus sigh deeply, but say nothing. "Nicodemus says hi. Don't call him Nicky, though, he hates that nickname." she couldn't help but giggle at the unintentional pun. "And Desidero is.....possessive...of Marcus. Which sucks for him because he's married to me." Cass couldn't help but touch the ring on her fingers. Happiest day of her life, really.

"And yeah, we actually got married off island, but there are quite a few couples - and even a trio - floating around here. Might as well when you're all gonna die for each other at some point."

All this new information, even if it was not something that was constant or could easily be reproduced, was still quietly filed away in the teen's mind. It would certainly be useful, at least at some point in time, so there was need of it. This was important to remember, even if only for the purpose of helping to push her along when the going got rough.
While she listened, Abbi nodded occasionally, obviously soaking up while simultaneously basking in how epic cool this girl was. Married before 20? A full Hunter by 17? Super cute and pretty with an awesome coat? New role model, found.
"Wooooooow. And 16? I mean I just turned 17 but I would have had to leave school to make it by 16 and even though I was bumped ahead a grade like wow that's... Wow." How were people that interesting enough to be found that young? What had all these other people done in their lives to be that worthy? And more importantly, what did Abbi have to do?

"Oh ah hi Nick- Nicodemus! Its nice to uh, sorta meet you! Viveca is up here--" A finger jabbed at her temple. "But she says you can call her Vivi if you want! She isn't a fuddy duddy like Nico-- Woah Viveca that wasn't nice. Why did you make me say that?" A high peal of laughter echoed through the girl's head but she only huffed a sighed and frowned down at the ground. Hopefully that would not reflect poorly on her, even if she felt it could have been something funny had she played it off right. Her cheeks flushed as she stood there, the shovel awkwardly rotated in her hand as she tried to think of something to say to salvage the conversation.

Distraction came in the form of mentioning marriage and Abbi perked back up.
"Off island? Are marriages on island prohibited or something? And a trio? Uhhhh ok but uh yeah! Marriage! That's..." Really an abysmal way to look at it.
{ But if it be truth... } The weapon whispered, the laughter mostly gone but still reverberating gently. The words held an odd layer to them that Abbi wasn't ready to peel back just yet.
"Was it a big ceremony? Did you wear a wedding dress? Did you invite people?"

Cass bit her lower lip. "I...wasn't in school at the time. To be honest......." She scratched the side of her head. "If the power was working, I'd show you the tapes in Life Labs. They have every episode recorded, after all. Eleven years of the life of a child psychic on tape and all.....It wasn't hard for them to notice when everybody else was seeing it too." It was kind of strange to mention, but at the same time it was sort of important to get a little bit of context here and there where she could. Almost three years off the air. That was just astounding to her. Even if Mom and Dad had - no. She'd not be able to check in on them in some time.

Please don't ruin that baby sister, though. Not while she couldn't take care of them.

However, Vivi's antics perked her right up, making her laugh as Nicodemus just frowned massively. "It's one of those Desidero things, yeah. But it's nice to meet you, Vivi!" Cass put her hands on her hips. "I'd offer a handshake, but that wouldn't work out too well. And yeah. Off island. Much prettier scenery. I mean, remember this place is foggy and gloomy most of the time. Not a place for a wedding."

Cass appeared to be starry eyed for a moment. "But ohhh man. We went to France and I had the prettiest dress and we kind of mass invited all of the hunters because why not and I know I cried, but that was before portal issues - we have a lot of them for a place so advanced, but Insanity Phoenix happened last year and ruined a lot of our buildings - postponed it for almost a year." She sighed happily again as she flipped through her phone for a moment to find her wedding photo to show it to Abbi.

Not in school at the time?!
Whatever carefully placed mask of casual curiosity had been constructed on Abbi's face totally dissolved with that remark. Certainly they had to have accepted people younger than how old Abbi had been, or else Miss Cass never would have made it to full Hunter by 17. What about that other kid she'd mentioned, the uh... Wind dude? He'd had to have been even younger! What had these kids been up to in their lives!?
Already vastly curious about that, she lost her train of thinking when Cass began to speak again. As though the woman could read minds she answered quite a few questions with her explanation, though they did bring up a great many more questions that were not at all filtered before spoken.
"You're a psychic? I thought that was like... Just really good guessing! Most 'psychic' people have really good intuition or know things about their uh readers I guess its called before they go on air but wow you were a real psychic? Are you still one?!"
Miss Cass was officially the coolest lady ever, even if she wasn't a real psychic.

The offer of a handshake makes Abbi echo a laugh even as Viveca gave an odd little rumble of amusement. With a blink and a tiny jump the teen looked up at the skies, a hand coming up to shield her eyes from the sun.
"Oh yeah I keep forgetting... See I didn't wake up until after the power went down... But I keep hearing things." Like how the cafeteria once held decent food, how getting a sunburn from doing work outside wasn't a worry, how the lights in the dorm building used to be on all the time. Naturally the teen would believe it when she saw it, but she was totally and wholly distracted by wedding talk.
Having never had a boyfriend, let alone much affection from boys ever, the idea of being married seemed like a magical fairy tale. So even if she was intensely jealous that she couldn't even dare to hope to experience such happiness, there was an odd, unexpected enjoyment in seeing Cass so happy.

Abbi smiled and sidled closer, her eyes slightly unfocused as she tried to imagine a wedding in France.
"That's so awesome. Did you get married in one of the big cathedrals? It must have been so much fun!" Even if it had happened ages ago, the teen still found herself wiggling in her excitement for her new friend. When the phone and pictures were produced she happily 'ooohh'ed and 'aaah'ed, even going so far as to gush about how lovely the dress had been.
Naturally, the next thing to gush about wasssss-- "WOW YOUR HUSBAND IS REALLY HOT."
There was no such thing as a filter right now.

Cass laughed. "Kind of a psychic. Almost. Little bit. The kind that can speak to ghosts supposedly. I'll admit I bullshitted most of it mostly because some ghosts are actually really big assholes." She hmm'd about this for a moment. "It..kind of started with me seeing my grandmother's spirit in her room after she dies and from there..well...being a 5 year old seeing ghosts was apparently something that my parents were able to live off of. Hence, no school. I've never been to one." It wasn't really the most interesting thing to her, but she wouldn't say no to seeming a little bit interesting. Nothing seemed interesting after a few years on island, however.

"We really only had a ceremony in one, since legally we're all dead so it was just the act of it I wanted. It was the most fantastic day, though." She seemed to sigh dreamily for a moment - until Abbi was unable to hold in the comment about Marcus. While she should have been jealous or upset or something of that variety, Cass just smiled, touching the face of her husband fondly.

"We met the first day we both woke up on the island and he became the best support structure I could have ever asked for. I like to think I'm the same for him." Another sigh. "And yes, he is hot. Which is why I married him. That and the fact he's really sweet and thoughtful. I know a lot of people think he's just an a** but...."

She might have looked about ready to just go on and on about him now.

"OK. WOW. OK." Never ever in her entire life had Abbi ever met anyone who had seen the things she had seen. When the Recruiters came to her, even then she had felt a very removed connection to them. They knew what it was like, but they were not approachable. Cass was. Cass was just like her, just prettier and smarter and with really good taste in... Everything and Abbi was feeling just a little bit kouhai right now.
"I didn't think... I didn't know... Wow... That's... That's really crazy. I mean not like you're insane crazy but... Intense, I guess?" The teen huffed a sigh and waved the shovel around in the air to try and clear her thoughts. This encounter was something the girl had expected, but not so soon. And definitely not from someone as cool and bad a** and sweet as Miss Cass.
"I mean, I'm sorry to hear about your Grandmother... I uh... Experienced something... Similar but uh... Dad didn't quite have the same reaction your parents did." Exploitation would have been a blessing.
"But no school? Luucckkkkyyyy." Said the girl who didn't know what it was like, having never experienced the opposite. Grass being greener and what not.

Legally dead?! Oh! So that was what happened when Abbi ran away. Good to know her family wouldn't really be looking for her, absolutely fantastic news! The teen smiled in genuine appreciation of a fellow romantic, all warm and fuzzy for her new friend.
"That is so! Awesomeeeee!" She chirped with a wiggle and bounce, not really sure what else to say. Oh! Ohhhh! "Did you have bridesmaids? And what were your uh... Your colors!" Girl talk was a foreign concept, something strange much like the idea of getting married. But Abbi sure was going to give it her best try!

A sincere "awwwwwww" followed Cass' confession and sigh, the sappiness turning Abbi all sorts of sentimental. She had met a really nice and cute guy on her first day to the Island! She'd met two guys! Maybe one of them would become her One True Love like Marcus had been for Cass! Wooooow.
"But he's really a big softie?" Abbi prompted with a hopeful smile. Yes Miss Cass, please dish on your handsome hubby and your awesome life and let Abbi bask in your coolness and be your friend.

"It really was one of the happiest days I've ever had." She sighed happily. "Oh! Our colors were gold and blue and yes I had bridesmaids! I actually was going to have a bridesman but my husband got to our mutual friend before I could." She laughed a bit, not seeming to be bothered at all by this.

"I wouldn't say he's a softie, just that he doesn't go soft on everybody because he wants you all to survive. I'm pretty sure you'll get a chance to meet him since he's trying to get all of the trainees learning the ropes." Another happy sigh. "But I think he's pretty damn perfect for me. Tall, dark, handsome." She laughed a bit.

"What about you? Have a type or a boy you left?"

Like any good teenage girl, Abbi sighed alongside Cass, one hand pressed against her cheek in a dreamy manner. A wedding in France, how terribly romantic...
"Blue and gold seem like good colors for you. Was your dress white? Or were you fashionable and decided to go with something ivory?" Despite not knowing much about weddings, the girl at least knew how important the right colored dress was. For what she didn't know regarding weddings, she had allowed herself that one small indulgence.
"Ha ha, a bridesman! I don't think I've ever heard of that one before!" How odd, but also somewhat charming.

Not at all minding that she was wrong if it meant that Miss Cass was going to continue speaking so happily, the girl was glad when the woman gave a better understanding of what she meant. Such a pretty lady shouldn't have that weighed down expression she had worn earlier, so Abbi was happy to ask the right questions if it made her happy. Even if the questions were kind of not all the way right...
"I hope I get to meet him soon! He sounds like a really wonderful person! And he's obviously made you really happy so I bet he's awesome!" Abbi grinned and dropped the hand from her cheek to wave excitedly in the air.
Only to nearly drop her shovel a moment later.

"Oh! N-no, not me... Not that I don't like boys I do I just... Uh... Didn't really get the chance to leave any boys... And never dated any to know my type?" How laaaame. With a small sigh the teen looked back to her little row of unplanted holes and shuffled a bit closer to it.
"Tall, dark and handsome is nice... But as long as he's smart, I think that'd be good."

demon_pachabel
PostPosted: Wed Sep 18, 2013 8:20 pm

Cass smiled. "Well, you don't have to date someone to know what your type is." she mused, smiling as she pat Abbi on the shoulder. "I mean, I know that Marcus wasn't exactly what I had in mind when we met but oh, he certainly kind of..."

She paused, tapping her chin.

"Now that I think about it, I think he kind of just was what I wanted as time went on and my needs changed from 'girl who doesn't really have a fear of death' to 'girl with no fear of death but a big exposure to it.'" she clarified, grinning. "Smart is a good start, though. Smart and sweet to you even if only to you and genuine and has likes outside of you because having 100% devoted attention is tiring and it gives you an excuse to spoil them and - " clearly Cass was very happy in her situation.

"I'd recommend your weapon like them to, but that's not mandatory. Nicodemus actually tried to talk me out of dating Marcus the entire courtship."

"You sure?" The teen asked in a mildly doubtful voice, casting big eyes up at the girl. Then Miss Cass patted her on the shoulder and the big eyes turned even wider and sparklier. Sempai Cass had given her affection! Ah! That was like a small marker of their budding friendship and it was so sweet and eeeeeeeeeeeee
"Did you guys have a Pride and Prejudice thing where you didn't get along at first until he did something really nice and then you fell hopelessly in love?" Sssh, it was one of Abbi's favorite movies she couldn't help it.

A small cloud covered the excitement of Abbi's face to hear about the exposure to death. She visibly swallowed, trying to appear brave.
"D-death is... Common around h-here?"

Glad for the distraction, Abbi nodded and tried to remember all those helpful hints that would provide a happier settlement in love. Things had been overwhelming, but not bad at Deus and there seemed no reason why she couldn't find someone to love. Especially if Miss Cass thought it possible! And why else would she give the teen tips if she didn't think it was a possibility!
"Smart and sweet I think is good. But hmmm... Viveca? Like anybody so far?" The teen's eyes rolled up to try and look at her eyebrows, waiting for a reply.
{ Yer really askin' me if I like any of the squelchy human blokes ye met so far? } Abbi gave a mental nod.
Viveca made a grumbling noise of disdain and was quiet.
With a shrug the teen looked at Cass.
"I haven't really met that many people yet... Just the two girls who were there when I woke up, two guys in the dorms aaaaand you! So far everyone is really nice!"
