Li Shou had been at the school for only a couple of days, and he found his rations dwindling. How could he live without such important necessities such as Swedish fishies and hard candies and new comic books?
Okay so... Admittedly nobody had really taught him how best to live on his own, and now that he didn't have to listen to grown-ups, the cat boil thought it a genius idea to only buy and eat candy. Had he made the connection between feeling icky and only eating candy? No, not yet, but give it time.
Grabbing his stuffed companion and bag of seeds, the cat sith headed out of the demon dorms and paused.
Where did he go now? What did he do when he got there? Li had never been grocery shopping. His mama had always done that and when she asked if he wanted to go, the boil threw a tantrum. His ears drooped as the helpless feeling overtook him, but it wasn't time to give up yet.
... Surely he could find someone to 'help him out'. It was just a matter of locating the right sucker person.

Jil had dwindling supplies as well, if supplies were seeds. Her small allowance she'd arrived with was down to the last few and she'd not yet acquired any supplemental income. Word had been sent to the colony that she required more allowance, but she knew their gnome thralls employees sometimes got tangled in paperwork. It may be a while before she received anything at all.
The bulletin board at school had proved rather fruitless and offered nothing but campus positions in which there was no pay except for school credits. School credits wouldn't buy her creature comforts no matter how few of those she required.
The ghoul, through careful observation, had come to the conclusion that she would need to venture off campus into the surrounding city and perhaps even the maul in order to find a job. She'd overheard that jobs were good ways to 'learn responsibility'. Perhaps this would all be a benefit to her future as leader?
She didn't think twice about the cat boil as she stepped out of her dorm and moved to pass him in the hallway. To her, most of the limbed-ones with tails and ears looked the same. Of course she didn't tell them that. The beholder was sure they all had very adamant arguments about whether they were dogs or cats or foxes or whatever. To her they were all the same... except these ones in particular had MORE unnecessary appendages. If she'd cared to look closer she'd distinguish his coloring or his clutching of the doll... but as of right now she didn't care much to do that.
"Excuse me.." She said cooly as she attempted to slip past him.

That had been just the interaction he needed. "You, strange woman!" He pointed directly at her before she could successfully scoot past, his tail jingling as it straightened itself out. "You will take me shopping!" Li Shou had actually contemplated just giving her the money so he didn't have to leave himself, but even at 13 that seemed like a bad idea, like when he gave things to his older sisters to take care of and never saw them again.
Also, please didn't seem to be in his vocabulary.

Her initial polite 'excuse me' had suddenly shifted into an entirely different version, "EXCUSE ME?!" The tiny ghoul was pinned with a finger by the cat-looking boil and his jingling accessories. "Firstly you will address me by my name. It is Xaejil." She would not yet offer him a nickname alternative. "Secondly I do not even know you. And third.. I will not be financially supporting strange students who make demands." Her arms clamped firmly across her chest. "But.." Her pink eyes bored holes into him. "You may come with me to the maul or possibly in-town. I will be job hunting."

Her initial shock didn't seem to phase the cat boil as he listened to her drag on with the numbered sentences. "We'll then, xiaojie." He purposefully got the name mixed up with Chinese. "How do you think I feel, having to consult strangers!" Really, his parents hadn't put much thought into this endeavor. At least, from his perspective.
Momentarily he seemed confused by her financially supporting statement. "A! No, I have my own seeds. I need none of yours." It was almost a gloat, really, but it seemed he was getting what he wanted nonetheless. "Yes. You will accompany me then." He nodded at this. It seemed he had picked just the right lady. How fortunate.

"Xaejil. ZAY-JILL." She enunciated with a hiss through her pointed teeth. "And I will not be taking you anywhere until you also share your name. I do not take kindly to being assaulted verbally by small, fur-bearing boils who would barely pass as a meal in my home land." She hadn't budged and lifted her chin defiantly. After a pause she clarified once more. "And you are accompanying me." In case he was under some delusion about being in charge.

The defiance briefly reminded the cat sith of his sisters, but he neglected to mention such a thing to a new acquaintance. "I am the great Li Shou." His hand rested on his chest as he spoke his name, as if the words themselves were a point of pride for him. "And am probably too sweet to eat." As his mother would creepily say.
Normally the boil would argue on the fact of who was accompanying who, but really... He WAS following her. "Well then. Lead the way Xiaojie~" He gestured towards the path with a smirk.

Jil smirked a bit, "Well then Shoelace, come along." It wasn't the most clever nickname but was the first thing that sprung to mind when he introduced himself. The ghoul stepped past him and walked briskly down the hall. She didn't need to glance behind her to watch him, it was minimal effort to keep him completely observed. "What did you need anyway?" He was draped in what looked to be nice clothes and had the air of someone used to giving orders. But he also was asking for help with something as trivial as shopping. Perhaps he was new. "I have not seen you before. Are you a new student?"

S-shoelace?
Li Shou looked down at his shoes with a furrowed brow. Yes, he did indeed have shoelaces, but... Was that the best she could do? Hah. What a joke.
The boil trotted to catch up with her, arms folded across his chest as he held his head high like royalty being led by a body guard. "I need candy." No, he wanted candy. What he really needed was wholesome food. "Not that it's any of your business." Yeah, okay Li Shou. You're a tough cookie. We get it.
His eyebrow raised as Jil continued her questioning. Well. She must have thought he was quite interesting. Maybe he could indulge her without all the hubub. "Yes, I recently arrived here, though I don't expect to be staying long. Once my parents realize how much they miss me, I'll be on the next train to home.~" He seemed... Very confident of that. A little too confident. "And what of you, Xiaojie? How long have you been at this wretched place?" Not that he cared, of course...

"Ohh..kay.." She side glanced at Li Shou for effect, though he was being adequately watched on that side as it was. She could care less if he wanted candy. Did the maul even have a candy store? Jil suddenly became aware that she'd never had candy before. Not like she'd tell him that. "A few months." The two of them with their arms crossed and refusing to truly look at the other were getting a few looks as they stopped at the door out of the dorm. She was waiting for him, the gentlemonster, to open it for her. She glanced at Shoelace and then at the door and back. "Well?"

Okay? Just okay? did she not understand the vast importance candy should hold for younger children? Psch. What a crazy woman.
"A few months. Hah, your parents must not like you very much." Whether he was treading on thin ice or not, Li Shou couldn't tell for sure. While he liked being mean, he was rarely aware of how harsh his words could sound, and when she stopped, the boil's brows raised to look in front of her.
What?
Li Shou simply skipped out in front of her with a shrug, opened the door for himself, and made no attempt to hold it open. She must have been waiting for him to take the lead or something. That was a man's place, as his father had told him. One of the few things Li Shou purposefully remembered about his father.

She simply hissed as he skipped through the door and her arm shot out to stop it from swinging back on her. This little furred one was definitely an annoyance. "My culture does not have the concept of parentage. All members of a generation are siblings, and I happen to be going to school as I have been chosen to the be the next Mother Eye." She puffed proudly. "That is to say .. ahh.. Queen. All others will pay reverence to my glory." Jil grinned a shark-toothed smile. "Are you here because your parents don't like you?" She gave him a sidelong glance and a smirk. "I wouldn't be surprised." She commented cooly as they emerged onto the school commons.

Li Shou just laughed mockingly at Jil's explanation of how her society worked. "So you're all little orphans. Does that make you the orphan queen?" Apparently the cat boil was not above making fun of orphans. What a little douche.
His laughing, however, ceased when his own family was called into question. "M-my mama loves me!" He was quick to defend, arms folding up tightly. Wouldn't be surprised? What was that supposed to mean? "Psch. I came here because of a bet. If I can graduate, my father says I can do anything I want." Which he had been doing already. If he lost, well... That meant he would be under his father's shoe until he was old enough to leave. "But he'll call off the bet long before that. Mama will make sure of that."
He seemed pretty confident in that fact...

Jil seemed a bit more amused, visibly so, as Li Shou went through his assurances about his family. She honestly was hardly bothered by his comments on being an orphan. Such a thing was not applicable to her society and she could tell this boil had no idea about anything besides himself. "I wouldn't be surprised because you clearly do not have care to observe the world outside of your own little bubble." She snorted and tossed her long hair. The eye shaped beads clacked against each other at the base of her back. "Schooling is not a bet, Shoelace." Jil had a particularly (and deliberatly) pitying look for the boil. "Your parents shipped you off. Because you are trouble. CLEARLY." The maul wasn't far so she didn't pause her quick strides, but she did pat his head with one hand in a 'poor kitty' kind of way.

Schooling wasn't a bet? Why couldn't it be?
The look of pity Jil shot him caused a chill to crawl up his spine.
No... No, they hadn't shipped him off...
Had they?
Li Shou stopped in his tracks as a pity pat graced his head.

Was he? Yes. He was crying. "I'm not in trouble!" The boil wailed, sniffling as snot started leaking from his nose. "I wanna go hoooome!" Hooo boy.
