With her net in hand, Hypnos walked down the street with a low heart. She had thought she'd gotten over what had happened during her last visit to her asteroid but even now as she searched the city for youma she found herself unsettled by it. What did that vision all mean? It had been so painful to experience and not simply because of the bloody actions she bore witness to. It certainly wasn't the first time she'd seen such things but it was different this time. It was as if she had been doing them, seeing it all through her own eyes. In the same theme, all the emotions welled up inside of her the same. More so than the actions, she could remember the pain she felt. How trapped, how alone and how betrayed she felt.

Distracted by her thoughts, Hypnos barely registered the chaotic signature in the distance.

Souls were a terrible thing to waste, thought Bazzite.

The blue locust of a man was stretched out over the roof of a small sedan, wings splayed out in a languid posture. He'd recently devoured the occupants just an hour before - one man, one woman and a teenage boy, all delicious but none very satisfying. None of them were awakened beings with a sparkling soul to match, just mundane and boring old sacks of meat born just for his predatory purposes.

Bazzite frowned when he realized these souls were hardly satisfying. It was then that a familiar little girl - Hypnos, was it? - had waltzed into his field of vision. Perhaps he could entice her over with candied words since his appearance was more monster than man? Stretching out like a cat, one leg was rest on the car's trunk and the youma appeared all but melted as he called out to her. "Isn't it late for a young one such as yourself to be out and about? And what is the net for, little one?"

Perhaps if he appeared sleepy, she wouldn't use the damned dust on him again.

A voice drew Hypnos back to the street, her body swinging to meet a familiar looking youma. It wasn't very often that she met the same youma twice so it took her a moment to realize it. He looked familiar but she seen so many youma that it really could be difficult. However, he was talking to her and that brought her immediately back to the memory of the night they met. She didn't meet youma that spoke very often and it was something she couldn't simply pass up.

"It's you," she replied, a little unfocused.

"As the keeper of sleep, no hour is too late!" She said as her eyes fell to her net. The net was for catching and detaining youma but she probably shouldn't tell that to a youma, right? Not that it would be useful knowledge given he'd probably try and avoid a net falling on him in the first place but some things were the best kept secrets. Instead of lying, she simply ignored the question in lieu of her own.

"Why do you talk? None of the other youma talk to me. Are you different?"

"Keeper of Sleep? That would explain a few things." Bazzite tapped his claws against his chin, propping himself up on one arm. "That dust of yours makes things sleepy. Now the whole getup makes sense."

A languid stretch of his wings accompanied the statement, buzzing in quick succession like the locust he was. Bazzite then locked eyes with the chibi and gave her a smile though it wasn't sinister. "Am I different? Why yes, yes I am." Bazzite chuckled, almost reliving the story of his life and his predicament in that very moment. Without going into detail, the youma frowned for a moment. He couldn't just give up his whole life's story, the culmination of all his efforts, just because a chibi senshi asked him to. No, he needed something to make that story worthwhile.

Bazzite then gave Hypnos a quick once-over. "There are other youma who talk but we are very few and far between. Now, in exchange for my story, would you be so kind as to bring me some food? Energy would be fine but you can't gather it. You're cute though. Maybe lure some ***** over here to me and I'll take care of the rest, hmm?"

Hypnos was proud to hear of her dust's effectiveness coming from someone she'd previously used it on but it hardly picked her up from her heavy heart. How could she simply move on from it? She tried hard to rid herself of those images and those feelings but they carried on with her from one life and right into a new one now. She thought she had freed herself from the feelings of sorrow that came with being trapped and alone but now they followed her back with more luggage than before.

"How?" She asked him this only to have his request, or rather ultimatum, throw at her.

"I..." she began to say that she couldn't possibly do that when the images of her past came back to her. Could she really just allow someone to die like that? "I... Will you... kill them?"

Bazzite blinked. So the child was smarter than she appeared.

Good for her.

"Kill them? Hmm... just for you," A smile peeled across his face though it wasn't long enough to start showing too many teeth. Not yet. "Just for you, I won't kill them. They'll just sleep, like you tossed some of that dust on them. How does that sound? Think of it like they wore themselves out by working too hard all day. I can pinkie swear if you want to come over here." Lifting up a huge claw, the youma knew Hypnos wouldn't come any closer than she had to but the idea was simply too much to let slip by.

But now she had the ball in her court. "What do you say, Hypnos? It my story worth a little snack for a hungry caterpillar?"

Her heart literally thumped in her heart when he paused the way he did, her hands balling into a fist close to her chest. Her expression looked extinguished and distraught, carrying a heavy decision on her shoulders. It would be okay if he only took energy, right? If they weren't going to die then she could do it, right? She looked at the youma in front of her, obvious sympathy carried over. Everyone deserved to live and if she helped him maybe she could save one person from being attacked later.

"Do you have a name?" She asked curiously, finding it interesting that he remembered her name and other details about her. She should know the name of someone she was going to help, right? Especially if she was going to go so far to help him.

The youma chuckled, stretching but never once moving from his spot on the car. "Bazzite. My name is Bazzite. But you can call me Bazzi if you want to, Hypnos."

Would he keep his promise not to kill the prey she brought to him? There wasn't a pinkie swear, so only time would tell.

Trust was a difficult thing in this war. Hypnos liked to think that everyone was capable of both good and evil, and that no one was above it. She tried to look above the power signatures and the obvious line between factions. Just because someone was a Negaverse member it didn't mean they were evil and just because someone was a senshi it didn't mean they were good. Hypnos knew that choices made people who they were, and just because civilians needed to be protected it didn't mean they were good people.

It was complicated but Hypnos wanted to do what was right for everyone. If she could save someone and ensure a youma didn't starve, then she was willing to try. However, who would she find to volunteer to give Bazzite energy? She looked left, and then right, and sighed.

"I... I will go find someone Bazzite. Wait here, okay?"

She ran off, disappearing from the youma's view. She seen couples walking by and immediately felt a ball in her throat. Her hands clenched and she moved on, watching as a young woman walked alone. She couldn't use them either. It was the sound of an animal's crying that brought her attention to some teenagers, not that much older than herself. They were 13 to 15, probably, and they were getting some jollies by hurting an animal.

Her clenched hands formed some sleep dust and she threw it at the small group. Two of the three fell to the ground with lethargy while the last wobbled on his feet. He didn't notice Hypnos so when she approached him asking for his 'help' he was startled. She was cute enough though, and a silly smile fell across his face that she couldn't read. Of course he could help her! It would probably be a lot more fun than this was.

Solemnly, Hypnos turned as she walked to watch the cat run away. She was glad to see the cat was all right, a small smile fell on her face. If she hadn't gone to look for someone to help Bazzite then the cat might not have been so lucky. At least she had that thought to keep her warm at night as the guilt churned in her stomach. Was she doing the right thing?

"I'm back..." she replied, a confused teenager standing between Bazzite and Hypnos.

The sudden appearance of a confused teenager made Bazzite smile. While the teen's back was turned, Bazzite slithered off the car and crawled across the street to stand up right behind the unsuspecting boy. "Thank you, Hypnos."

The youma unhinged his jaw and leaned in towards the boy's head, white smoke lifting from his form to pool in Bazzite's mouth. This was the energy extraction process Hypnos was unable to perform. The boy started to slump, unable to keep standing while his energy was being drained and a clawed hand shot out to catch him. Once the boy was hovering in the space between life and death, Bazzite gently let him down onto the street. He looked like a homeless teen, sleeping in the gutter.

Satisfied, Bazzite rubbed his belly. "Much better. Thank you very much, Hypnos. Now for my end of the bargain..."

The youma turned around to return to his lounging spot on the car. "I used to be like you, Hypnos. I was human. I was a boy, older than you, of course, but I had a family. I had school and friends; I had my whole life ahead of me. But I was a Negaverse agent, a Captain. I worked for Benitoite, my General."

Benitoite's name held a special place in the youma's heart and the name was uttered with a kind of love and admiration all but impossible in monsters. "But bad things happen. My father killed himself and everything went downhill from there. I asked my General to promote me after trying to avenge his mother's attempted murder, and I ended up here." The youma motioned to his near seven foot form draped across the car in a single fluid gesture. "So to say I'm different is an understatement - I'm the only youma I know of who was once fully human."

Hypnos was being thanked but it didn't really make her feel warm and fuzzy. However, the satisfaction that Bazzite seemed to express after having his fill did bring a strange, foreign smile to her face. It was a small one but it was hard to do much more when she felt so weighed down. Her eyes followed the teenager and she watched as the boy was placed quiet gingerly on the ground. It brought strange emotions forward, such a strange act in comparison to what she'd experienced and most senshi thought of youma.

She had to check. She fearfully made her way to the young boy, kneeing beside him to check if he was still alive. It was a huge relief for the child that he was, a sigh slipping past her lips as her eyes fell down and closed in thought. A little worse for wear, he should consider himself lucky he didn't end up like the cat or worse. He'd wake up after he regained his energy and probably assume he passed out. She wasn't sure what was going to happen at first but she felt a lot better about things now than when she had brought him over.

The story Bazzite had for her was amazing, she could hardly believe it. The Negaverse could do that to people? They did that to him? There was a large, sympathetic frown on her face. So much had happened to him and in the end he had to live a life like this? Did he want this? He didn't have much of a choice, did he? He was a human and now he was stuck living as a youma? A youma that had no choice but to feed off the energy and life of humans? It was just so sad.

"Do you wish things were different? Maybe you don't have to live like this? Maybe you don't have to live off the pain and misfortune of others..."

"Do I wish things were different?" repeated the youma, tilting his head to and fro to gaze at her in confusion. "Goodness no. I would just be a General who lived seeing his father hang himself on a doorknob at home. I would be a General who couldn't avenge the attack on Benitoite's mother. How could someone live with that? It would just be too much, I think. I was a boy of a fragile constitution and even more fragile psyche. I'd probably succumb the way my father had, sooner or later."

Another stretch and Bazzite's wings buzzed happily behind him. "It's hard to describe, but it's liberating, actually. I don't have to worry about bills or whether or not I'll marry and have children. I don't have a job or schoolwork to concern myself with. All I have to do is follow orders and keep my belly full. It's a much more... simplistic lifestyle. Sure, I have to live in the Rift where there is no sun, but you get used to it. And speaking of keeping my belly full..."

A claw reached out to point to the sleeping boy's body in the gutter. "Did he look to be in pain, Hypnos?" he asked quite seriously, leveling his gaze at the chibi who seemed so concerned for a complete stranger. "Draining energy is just like wearing yourself out exercising - it's not a painful process. And not everyone has a good soul, either. So to say I live off the pain and misfortune of others would be a... misconception on your part."

Hypnos felt more and more sympathetic with the youma as he spoke about things. How could he just give up like that? It was hard for her to understand because she had fought through so many hard times since she became a senshi and even before that. She might have lived a good life and had everything she'd ever need but there were many times the scale could have tipped her into a life of sorrow and darkness.

"Are you saying you will never rip a starseed out of someone's chest because that's certainly not painless." She said softly as she shift her weight from the left to the right. It would be a nice place if youma would only take a little energy from people here and there to exist but most simply removed the starseeds and were done with it. It was much more filling, especially those of senshi and other powered characters.

"Maybe not everyone dies painfully but everyone has a family or someone that will miss them when they're gone. The feelings you had about your father's death and being unable to save or avenge the death of someone are real feelings! Everyone you kill, everyone... they'll feel just like you did or at least similarly. That is pain, and to lose someone is misfortune."

She'd experienced the pain of losing someone too many times, and she believed that made her qualified to describe such things with reason.

"Everyone deserves to live Bazzite. You, and I, and even this boy here. Whether or not they were a 'good soul' is not a question here."

She stood up from the boy, walking toward Bazzite. If this had been any other senshi, any other youma, any other time, the youma and senshi would be locked into a fight but Hypnos didn't want that. She couldn't allow herself to believe that only one existence was allowed. If that was the case, no one would win. Eventually if youma overcame the humans then they would starve to death and if the humans overcame the youma then how were they any better? Youma, or at least some, were clearly capable of feelings!

"We can be friends if you want. If you don't eat starseeds, I'll even help you get energy." Senshi all over Destiny City were rolling in their graves. So many senshi had been killed by youma, and so many civilians but Hypnos couldn't simply hate something based off the actions of others. It was wrong. Many senshi in the past had tried to convince her otherwise but she wouldn't change her mind. Now, blue eyes looked up at the youma with hope.

Was it wrong of her to want to save the lost boy inside the youma shell? Hypnos didn't think so.

Are you saying you will never rip a starseed out of someone's chest because that's certainly not painless.

Bazzite had to chuckle at that one. "No, no, it's certainly not painless. But you don't ask the cat what the mouse thinks when he leaves it half-dead on your doorstep. And you don't think about the fish when you catch them, kill them and then eat them wrapped in rice and cucumber, do you?" The youma tilted his head oddly and stretched it unlike any human would be capable of doing. "Do you think about the cows who would become your steak that night? They have families and feelings too, you know."

He was about to go on another lecture about the food chain, how youma had no personal feelings for the people they devoured, nor the souls they consumed, just like the humans who raised chickens and cattle for themselves and others. He was going to try and explain that the glory of youma was that they didn't care about the people they ate and therefore were the perfect predators, simply another part of the food chain above that of humanity. No doubt the thought of being something's prey struck fear into the hearts of a species so used to being on the top of the totem pole.

However, Hypnos' offer of energy gathering was simply too good to pass up. "Really? You'd help me like that?" asked the locust, blinking once or twice at the chibi who took a few cautious steps towards him. She was a lamb and, well, he wasn't about to slaughter something that offered to pay him in droves with hapless people to drain. "My dear, I think we have a deal. I'm not picky in who you bring me so... whatever keeps you content will keep me full and happy."

He sat up then, crossing one long leg over the other. Extending a hand to Hypnos, Bazzite offered to shake. "Or would you prefer a pinkie swear?"

Oh Benitoite was going to love this.

Hypnos fidgeted uneasily when Bazzite began talking about the food chain. At this very moment, Ainsley was really happy that Cora never brought half-dead mice home to her as a gift. It really made Hypnos think though. She'd never really thought about the food she ate, and now that it was being thrown in her face, she couldn't help but cringe. There was no way she'd ever be able to eat meat now, not with the idea of animals being left behind to mourn their family. By this point, her arms had wrapped around her body.

"I'll help you, we're friends right?" She said softly as she took a bold step to close the gap between the two of them. She swallowed her breath, and tried to erase all those horrible memories of being attacked by youma out of her mind. She'd always come out on top, somehow, and this would be no different. Right? She believed it would and slowly her arms fell down to her side. From there a pale hand reached out toward the monstrous blue hand.

In comparison, the size difference between the two when her hand met his was insane. Her icy blue eyes widened at it, and she stood there frozen for a moment. It was hard to believe that this was once the hand of a teenager not that much older than herself.

"Will you really be happy Bazzite?" She asked. She'd always believed that youma felt things like people did but no one believed her.
