User ImageHis mother had told him to 'go bother someone else', and then left him to his own devices this morning. Corvus didn't really mind since there had been no raised voices or cuffing involved. Mom must be in a good mood today... The little hyena had opted for a walk, since he didn't feel like being sat on or chewed on by his sisters. They messed up his fur and didn't appear to appreciate his helpful advice on accessorizing.

He practiced walking, turning and twirling in ways that made his wing-scarf flap around in a flattering way. It was a challenge to manage all that without dropping the bone helmet. The fit was pretty good, but he had to refrain from tossing his head around too violently unless he wanted to send his headwear flying. He hummed happily as he pranced around, without a care in the world.

Feel free to throw in anyone that would like to meet him... or that would hate to meet him I guess smile

User ImageHer time in a proper pack, surrounded by strong females and generally submissive males had been pretty good for Zweite. She had basically stopped pulling fur from the base of her tail unless she was feeling especially nervous or if she got into a confrontation with someone, which she had learned to avoid relatively easily. For the first time in her life, she didn't look like a victim. It was a novel experience for the hyena, and she wasn't quite sure what to do now that she was like all the others, at least externally.

One thing she knew for certain she did not want to do was call attention to herself. She was basically a nobody in the pack, and that was fine with her, since people did not pick fights with nobodies. Going out of her way to attract attention, as far as she was concerned, was the worst thing she could possibly do, even if the hyenas in this pack were all so self-assured that it was considered normal to try to stand out. Like that cub over there, twirling around in a bone helmet and...wings? The level of ostentation that resulted in pups so bedecked was mind-boggling. Curiosity and a little bit of horror drew the shy she-hyena closer.

User ImageCorvus didn't notice the other hyena at first. He was too busy prancing, turning and just being extremely good looking. He walked, stopped, and then pivoted around his right shoulder to give his pretend-audience a better view of his smoking hot appearance. He walked back, and was about to repeat his performance, but he somehow managed to trip on his paws when he turned the other way. He growled at his stupid chubby puppy feet for not cooperating, and when he looked up he realized that he'd managed to fall on his face right in front of a brown female. Oh, embarrassing...

"Hello," he said and offered her a friendly grin. He wasn't sure if mom would count this as proper male behavior, but he kind of zoned out when she ranted about how males should act around females. He couldn't help it! He had more important things on his mind. Oh, sparkly rock!

"Hello," she replied. She offered a smile that was shy but friendly. Rowdy and rambunctious pups could overwhelm her, particularly in large numbers, but one pup in a strange get-up she could probably handle.

"Were you trying to take flight?" she asked, unable to come up with a better reason why a pup might have a pair of wings draped over his shoulders. "Probably you should leave the skull off for that. It can't be good for your peripheral vision, and probably weighs you down."

Too late it occurred to her to wonder if a pup would know what peripheral vision meant. Oh well. She smiled again, even more awkwardly than before. People were so stressful!

Oh my gosh I'm sorry. I forgot all about this one.

User ImageCorvus figured that as long as he didn't get cuffed or mauled he was doing splendidly with the ladies. His mother and sister had very obvious ways of showing when he stepped out of line. Calling them ladies might be a stretch, but not calling them ladies would certainly lead to unpleasantness sooo... He smiled back at the other hyena. He had either learned to be really smooth all of a sudden, or this lady was much less bite-y than his mother.

"Fly?" he asked and tilted his head, "No, no no... Hyenas are much too fat to fly."

It might have been interesting to learn where the tiny pup had picked that up.

"I'm wearing these because they make me look fabulous," he struck a pose and leered at her from under the rim of the skull. "And it works too! My sister even copies my style! Well... Maybe she kind of did it first... But I wear it better!"

Despite herself, Zweite grinned at the pup's sensible pronouncement regarding the likelihood of airbourne hyenas. Zweite had not known too many fat hyenas, but she supposed he merely meant that they were too heavy, which was true enough. He wasn't wrong, certainly.

His next statement kept her smile on her face. He was so delightfully cheery. She enjoyed that about pups. They were so much easier to be around than adults or adolescents. She tried to avoid the latter two age groups.

"You definitely look fabulous," she agreed. "Does everyone in your family adorn yourselves like you?"

Her left ear flicked as a bug of some sort landed. Mosquito? Fly? She couldn't see it, but she turned her head quickly and snapped at it. It was annoying and itchy. She had always hated insects.

I am going to try to be less of a flake this year. Sorry for the delay in tagging. Again.

Corvus was pleased at the compliment. He knew he looked fabulous, but he was a sucker for praise. Especially when he was praised for his looks and his style. His little chest puffed out with pride, and he beamed up at the adult.

"Oh yeah," he said, nodding vigorously, "Most of us have something nice on. Feather or bones or something..."

The skull rattled around on his head, but somehow still stayed on despite his energetic nodding. The skull was special. Only he and Tesak had skulls, and Tesak wasn't around anymore. His darker brother had gone with his father somewhere, and he'd been told they wouldn't come back.

Zweite ducked her head, noticing that her compliment had pleased the cub, and pleased about that, but still awkward. When she was young she had given her mother and sister lots of compliments, but they hadn't really been compliments so much as nice things she said in the hope that they wouldn't get mad at her or yell at her if she told them things they liked to hear. In a way, what she'd said to Corvus had been like that, except she wasn't really afraid that the pup would hurt her or anything like that.

"Your mother must be...very devoted...to you." It was really, really difficult for Zweite to talk about mothers, even casually. Even other people's mothers. Her own had been such a terror.

She smiled awkwardly and looked away, wondering if there was some way for her to extricate herself from this conversation. The pup was nice enough, but she didn't think they had all that much in common. Not really. Although it was easy enough to hear what her sister would have to say about her talking to a boy pup. She didn't want to think about that.

"I should probably...um."

Pathetic. She couldn't even end a conversation with a pup. A boy pup, at that.

"I... guess," Corvus said, not entirely sure what devoted meant, but not prepared to admit that. He felt the need to add something about his mother, so he said the first thing he could come up with. "She didn't even cuff me this morning! Great, huh?"

He beamed. That was a good thing, right? Right? Hmm... His wing-scarf was looking a bit ruffled. He shimmied his shoulders to make the feathers fall just right. Much better! What was the female saying again? She should... what? Oh, wait, he knew the answer for this one!

"You should get a hat," he filled in, looking her straight in the eyes as if he was sharing the mysteries of the universe. Hats were fab, and more people should wear them. "I could help you find one!"

And with that the cub bounced off around an elephant skull, in search of the perfect hat.

Oops... Forgot about this one too.

Zweite made herself smile as the pup boasted that his mother hadn't even cuffed him that morning, even though the thought made her heart hurt and she barely stopped herself from cringing at the memory of how her mornings had begun before her escape.

Her smile became genuine, at least momentarily, as he shimmied his wing accessories back into place. It was just such a silly thing, she couldn't help smiling, although she lost her smile to a look of startlement when the pup decided that she needed a hat.

She would have protested the necessity, maybe told him that she didn't have the wherewithal to pull it off, but he was already gone. She had no idea where he was going, but she breathed a somewhat guilty sigh of relief that he had left.

Was it too early for her to return to her den and call it a day?

Do you figure we can call this one finished?
