It was different here; light, bright and it felt rather warm. It might have had to do with the glow that had taken over his form only to separate into a small thin wisp that danced around and then beckoned him to follow. With not much else to do, Milo simply did.

He found himself soon being guided trough a small forest of thin threes, music drifting through the air all around and a thin veil of fog - different than what he was used to. It was nice, though the boy kind of wondered what was going to happen. These places weren't ever so simply with just a forest and some music.

Milo soon found his answer when the little wisps, having grown in numbers as he traveled, brought him to a larger of the trees. Barren and sickly, kind of like the rest of them, but still beautiful in its own way.

"At last," a voice echoes and after a beat, Milo realized it was the tree itself. "At last, someone has arrived to hear my tale. It has been so long, I have been silenced too long, taken and hidden, my power feared but not respected, cultivated until I am barren and empty. This is all that remains of my Legacy, but I am not finished, not yet. As long as my powers remain, my children will prosper after me. They will take up my mantle, to protect, to serve, to remember, and to grieve. Men like the Great King will rise again, and fall just as easily, but I only wish to serve. Come now. Help me fulfill my last desire."

Milo wasn't exactly sure what the tree meant, how he was supposed to exactly help. And walking the remainder of the forest didn't bring him any closer to figuring it out. But he wanted to, it seemed a decent enough thing to do (did it mean fighting something though?)

There was a pretty lake at least, glowing and flickering as so many orbs danced along the surface. They, and the trees surrounding it, made it seem almost white and ethereal. Milo felt drawn to the lake, and he pressed forward towards the banks where he soon heard a gurgling voice from beneath the surface. There was a simple enough solution to hear it better but he hesitated for a moment, unsure of how wise it really was. The lake could eat his face for all he knew, but this voice from the lake could very well bring him answer so he plunged his head in.

"Heal my children," A voice within the lake whispered, a sad tone within its words. "And when you do I will give you a gift of immeasurable value. That is my only wish and my only desire. Take these waters and carry them to my children."

Oh, so that's how. Seemed simple enough, he thought to himself as a collection of glowing orbs helped him out of the lake. They continued to linger, as if helping as he cupped his hands and placed his palms in the water and they continued to dance as he made his way back to the tree. It was as if they were guiding him, telling him where to go and making sure he was careful with his precious cargo. He made it back with a relatively good amount of water, which he offered to the tree. It shuddered once and simply dropped an acorn at his feet until it withered away with its thanks.

Milo picked up the seed he had been gifted and made his way back to the lake.

Milo Hale didn't know if his deputy was always in a surly mood or if she just didn't like him. Well, whenever he saw her talking to the townsfolk in their small fair town of Deus, she seemed to have a pleasant enough manner. Cordial even, helpful but then when her bright green eyes caught him in her gaze it all turned to disdain.

Maybe it was because he was new in town and had somehow ended up with the job of Sheriff, a job she had had her eyes on as she trained under the last one. It was really his fault for getting it, not when he saved the last one from a gang of rough riders (ones he had a small affiliation with, but that wasn't his fault either... he thought he was being helpful). He was a (dashing, mind you) rogue, a man without a plan and now he was thrust into a job he didn't expect to ever have but kind of thought was pretty neat. It was just Alaska completely hated him. Some of the folk in town were a little weary of him at that, but what could be said about a once drifter.

"Trouble seems to be happenin' down at the Nelson...." he paused, trying to remember if that was in fact the name, "Nelson ranch." Milo stated as he sauntered into the station, like he'd seen a few lawmen in his day do. He felt mighty cool. Alaska simply gave him that look before she went back to flicking cards into a bowl.

"So?"

"It's our job?" Wasn't it? To help? That's why he said he'd be right over when Ms. Nelson came up to him while at the General Store. Milo had simply come into the office to gather a few things he knew weren't already in Koume's saddle bag.

Alaska snorted, not looking up where she sat, feet on the desk and all that in a relaxed uncaring position. "No, that's just yer job..."

"Well, what are you going to do?"

"Maintain the peace here," she sneered but then she looked up at him with a wry kind of smile, "especially if something happens to ya out there." She looked... hauntingly hopeful.

"That's... very kindly of you, 'laska..." His gear was ready to go, but now he wasn't sure if his nerves were. But well he had been doing alright so far, what could go wrong?

"Mmhmm.." was her only response, she still held a wicked sort of smile on her face as he made his way out. He gave her a small wave, she didn't back. That sort of partnership...

This wasn't someone the populace could really get ready for, not something of this grand scale. So, when it happened it was obviously devastating. Hunted, killed, for food and nourishment in the beginning but after so long he began to think it became for sport and pleasure. To see the human race reduced to nothing but cattle and fodder.

Milo and his sister had been the only ones left of their family, thinking the rest of their family would outlast them on their little island in the middle of the ocean. But they had been wrong, and they didn't know how Hawaii had been hit nor did they want to. Because there would have been doubts and regrets, last words unspoken and Hana and he needed to survive. It was why he couldn't leave her, he never had told her he had been recruited for some sort of mission and organization. That he would have been going away and they would probably never see one another. This had halted such plans, but he felt better off.

That was until they took his sister from him too. The creature had been powerful, almost primal with war paints and simple leathers and a wild look in her eyes. She - he could only assume - had grand wings, almost mesmerizing to behold. Maybe that's what stunned him at first, getting a good look at one of them as she came down hard upon them, tackling her lithe sister to the ground, ready to swoop away with those powerful wings.

"MILO!" Hana cried out, struggling in the stronger grasp.

He couldn't say anything at first, simple stared at the pair tossing in the debris of their city. Hana was trying to put up a fight, but she was so weak from this ordeal. She was going to lose. She was going to be taken. "No..." he wheezed under his breathe. Something took over him, something almost feral. It wasn't a call to arms, a last stand or the start of anything. Just a need to survive and to keep his sister with him. "HANA!" He yelled, grabbing onto the first thing his hand came in contact with. It was a pipe, loose thankfully and easy to hold. The boy charged...

Milo came to at the sound of soft whimpers and found himself on the card hard ground. He blinked for a moment, unsure of where he was nor how he had gotten here. He had been on his way to school, hopping along as most of the dustbunnies did, ready for adventure and learning so they could all get big and strong like their sires...

He remembered hands around his middle and a sort of laugh, hearty and deep. His culprit couldn't have been larger than he was but he was so much stronger. There had been a boat, a call sign of the black market. He had been sold... sold?

The Dustbunny urusu blinked, lulled his head to the side to see who was beside him - he didn't whimper after all. There were four others near him, all huddled together as best they could. He didn't know them, they don't know each other but kept together. Even as different as they were. There were five of them in a pitch dark place with cauldrons and an ominous feeling. A beautiful sparkling orb was placed on a pedestal near them....

......

.......

....

aaw, jack. He was at the Alter of Sacrifice...

Online gaming wasn't usually Milo's thing, he was more of an outdoors person; on the track team and taught swimming at the Y on weekends and during the summer. Laying outside and just enjoying the day. His friends had pressured him into buying it - especially when they learned his computer was more than compatible with it. This is Halloween, the game was called, one of the hottest MMO out there available at the moment.

And Milo was utterly hopeless with it. His hands felt like all thumbs as they tried to remember the proper sequences for attacks and moves, his reflexes off and not used to looking at screens in such a manner. His friends had all but given up on him really, especially after his first pass at the game. They had yelled at him for using his real name (how was he supposed to know?!) And when he returned with a new character named Liom - 'cause he thought he was being clever - he couldn't find them anywhere (he had gotten on the wrong server). The boy decided to venture on his own, which wasn't the best possible tactic. Within minutes he had been killed by some low level bunnies (bunnies, whhhy) and almost gotten his gear swindled from him by another player - who then later ganked him.

It wasn't going well, but he wanted to stick with it (besides, he probably couldn't get the game refunded) and wandered his character into town - a valiant looking Hunter with a spear, if he didn't say so himself. Already the main chat log came to life with conversations flying on the screen. He didn't pay much attention to most of it, intend to going to check prices on better gear when an acronym caught his eye.

[ main chat ] Koume Shizuka : LFG

He had seen it a few times, but never knew what it was - again, his friends had all but ditched him. So, now was a time to find out perhaps. He responded, intent to find out all of this business.

[ main chat ] Hael Liom : LFG?

More chatter, mostly of lewd remarks and things he didn't really care about.

[ whisper ] Koume Shizuka : Oh finally, I've been waiting forever for someone. Meet me by the tablets.

... wait, what?

It was really the start of a beautiful partnership.

The rain was pelting down on him, harsh and cruel. Milo adjusted his fedora a little, so the sheets didn't obscure his view too much as he stood in the field while coppers circled all around him, trying to keep track of evidence as well as to make sure nothing floated away on them. It was that kind of night, and it was that kind of case.

He dug his hands into his pockets, keeping them warm from the cold as he got himself closer to the body. His notebook had been left alone, no point in trying to take notes in this kind of weather. The ink would simply bleed. Hopefully his memory would serve him well. But, if his didn't. He knew her's would.

Koume was the one to bring his attention to this one after all. The dame had sauntered her way into his office earlier, a little swagger in her tight little walk and a gleam in her eye. She had sat herself on his desk like she always did, hitching her a-line skirt just a little to show her stems, to get what she wanted. There was a case, something up their alley.

"Yours or ours?" He questioned her, still tapping the keys at his type write.

"Ours," she replied coolly. There was something with her voice, like she was excited. It was hard to read on her face, it was like she always wore a mask. "I thought we'd be perfect for it."

She always had a knack of finding the odd ones, the ones most of the other detectives passed off like yesterday's lunch. The hocus pocus, as they called it and they were starting to get a rep for taking them all. Laughed at most of the time, but they were at least an interesting challenge.

"Anything, aibou?" He was still yet ten feet from the mangled corpse that used to be a young girl. From here he could tell it wasn't ordinary. Up their alley she had said, one of those kinds of cases. He frowned looking at it, they had seen something similar a few months back. Still hadn't explained it.

Koume didn't look up, "I told you to stop calling me that." She was practically knee deep in it, even with her small little outfit. Not even daunted by the cold and the rain, hard at work and mind only on the task. A pro. She was the dirty work in this operation they had going while he was the brains... kind of. Or maybe she was really doing most of the.... nevermind.

"Same cuts as last time," he commented, not furthering the other topic. He knelt down, still keeping some distance. Bodies never sat right with him after all. "Think the bare hands like the last one?" It was hard to tell in this rain, the water was seeming to wash away the crime scene but even from this angle he could see it wasn't just a knife. Like last time. But this one seemed amateurish, the precision was gone, like it was an accident or a last minute decision to mutilate what the killer had found. The girl looked to have been spooked, rightfully so but with more surprise than fear. Just something.. different. Koume seemed to notice it as well.

"A different perp," she said, standing up. There was something in her hands, evidence she didn't want noticed by the police. Something to check back on at the office, with the other pieces they had taken from other crime scenes. See if there was a pattern that no one else looked for. "I think we're done here..."

"Right."

Each memory seemed to pass from his finger tips as he presented it to the planted acorn, letting it grow stronger and stronger. Some of them amused Milo, fun tales of what might have been and each had a unique quality; he wondered if any of them could possibly be true in a way. But he didn't get to latch on really and find out, they were taken like so many memories before.

Well, at least the small tree he had managed to grow was thrilled with them, thriving as it was even after such a short while. The power of memories.

The power of memories indeed, the tree had grown drastically in such a short time and Milo felt pretty proud of himself - of only he could remember those that he had lost. But perhaps he was done, but a simple voice called him back. He wasn't and he turned towards the lake and journeyed forth, waiting for instructions.

His view was different this time, and the boy marveled at the sight of the castle some distance away, spilling water into various pools through its ruined remains.

"Take some of this water, and my blessing. This is my last request. Show my children your world so they will grow each unique and different." He was told, and so he did, looking at the offered choices. Milo found himself drawn to the cold one, despite any sort of negative notions steaming off of it. He dipped his hands in, suddenly rushed with the feeling it held over him. The water was cold as were his memories. Also of cold water, rushing at him with all its might. He swallowed so much of it and it held him in its grasp not letting go. The current was strong, his leg ached with pins and needles. It was the time he had broken it after a horrible fall from his board, it had found the reef and then the current found him. He didn't know how long he had been stranded, alone and unsure of his own survival. He couldn't find his way back to shore, he was so young at that. Broken.

Until his brother pulled him out.

This was what he offered to the tree he had grown.

"Are you satisfied with what I have become?"

His lips pursed together, unsure as he looked at what his tree had grown into, housing a large beast who stared at him with deadly eyes. "You became what you became," he told it, "look rather cool, ya?" What was done was done, and he shrugged a little before walking away.
