"...again with this..."

Rei groaned. The feeling of instant travel---must he call it teleportation?---made his senses go awry.

He shook his head, clearing the strange feeling of his ethereal body gas turned into mush-

And saw a spark of light. A warm, white glow, encompasses him and then, wisp-like begins to separate from his body, floating away. It is encouraging him, as if telling to walk forward.

"Where's...this?"

Everything seems to take an almost surreal, enchanted air. Thin mist covers the ground, but gentle mist, unlike the unforgiving fog of Destruction. He can hear music, humming, singing, somewhere in the background. More and more wisps begin to appear around him, simply floating white orbs that guide his way forward, leading in a path. "These aren't plasma...right?"

Eventually trees begin to appear in all directions around him. Long, silver trees, bare and empty. They are all thin, the same size and form.

"Hmm. A forest-no, this would not be a forest. A woods then?" He continued walking until he reached a particularly large silver tree.

Its branches, however, are also barren. It is quiet, but he feels something, almost like a warm heartbeat from within, sleeping.

"..."
It seems sickly.

"At last," it echoes, a feminine voice.

"Eh? Did someone called me?" He looked around...no one there.

Could it be...the tree?

"At last, someone has arrived to hear my tale. It has been so long, I have been silence too long, taken and hidden, my power feared but not respected, cultivated until I am barren and empty." The voice-no, the tree said.

"This is all that remains of my Legacy, but I am not finished, not yet. As long as my powers remain, my children will prosper after me. They will take up my mantle, to protect, to serve, to remember, and to grieve. Men like the Great King will rise again, and fall just as easily, but I only wish to serve. Come now. Help me fulfill my last desire."

"Of course I will. Tell me, how could I help you?"
Rei's resolve is to protect everyone. Not limited to humans.

"Follow the wisps. They will show you the way to the Mother Lake." Said the tree again. "The lake it is." Rei answered quickly, eyeing a cluster of orb-like lights that has gathered in one particular direction. "I'll be back quickly, so please hold on!" He said as he darted away.

At the end of his long run, the forest clears and he reached a lake.

Light and a thousand glowing orbs dance over the surface, giving it the illusion of being made of pure white. In the distance, trees, all silver, peer out from the thin mist. He is somehow drawn by the lake, to the lake. All else seems insignificant to him.

He heard a strange noise, a soft singing...a lamentful song coming from the lake itself.

"Hmm." After judging carefully, Rei decided to place his headphones' jack into the water.

He can hear it. A voice calling inside the lake. It sounds remorseful.

"Heal my children," it chimes, "And when you do I will give you a gift of immeasurable value. That is my only wish and my only desire."

"I would not need the gift, really. To help your children---the Great Silver Tree is already my task."

"Then take these waters and carry them to my children." the voice from inside the lake said.

The orbs around him begin to dance again, and slowly, directed him to the shallow part of the lake. "So...what should I carry this with?" He looked around. No items resembling a container whatsoever.

He sighed.
"I'll bet this is why the Great King made even me a tangible body..."
Without much option he used his hands to carry the water. It is hard-very hard. He must pushes his fingers tightly so the irreparable leak at least reduced in diameter.

Slowly, he is guided forward by the spirits, the orbs, until reaches the sickly tree back.

"I have returned!" Rei exclaimed to no one in particular, since his partner was a...well, tree, duh. "So what should I-waugh!"

He tripped on a root. The water splashed on the tree---

"-I'm sorry! Let me bring more for you-"

"-no. This is enough."

"-eh?"

"Thanks to you, I can summon my last sliver of power. I can create a new scion; one that will resume my role. Unfortunately for you, that means your task is not complete yet."

It shivers a little bit and then from a brand, spawns a single acorn. The acorn falls right in front of him and then the entire tree shudders and withers---

"That acorn is my child. My only, beloved child. Please, I beg you. Raise it with care, raise it with love. For how you bring it up will ultimately decide what it will grow into."

"Wait! Can't you tell me more about this-"

"Farewell...and thank you."

The Great Silver Tree was no more. It has become but splinters and sawdust.

Eir picked up the small acorn. It was not bigger than his toe.

"So...I must raise this into a tree?"

How many YEARS would this simple request take!?

Acorn Size!
16mm

The floating orbs guided him back to the lake again.

Once again, the lake is humming.
"Oh great. What now?" Rei asked, again lowering his headphones' plug into the water.

"My children need time to grow, to move on from my Grief. Help them create their own Legacy and feed them each unique memories."

In the water, shadowy forms begin to form, and then create large, dark blue bubbles.

He somewhat know. Each bubble is a memory.

'His' memory.

But not just any memory. He can see his face...him inside those bubbles. In some of them he is doing something, strange, unusual and foreign to his own memory. In some bubble, 'he' even doesn't seem anything like the present 'him'

Does this mean...there's also fabricated memories in here? He muttered to himself, reaching to the nearest one-

POP.

It popped. And with it, deep purple smoke engulfed him.

"...ei. R..i.."
Mmm? He can hear something-

"REI! Don't slack off! Finish your lap instead of daydreaming in the pool!" Shouted someone from the lifeguard seat.

"H-hai coach!" He jerked suddenly, and resumed his swim. He's currently in his...something like 15th lap of a FREEstyle swim.

...

"Ha~ah. This is tiring. And to think that we're going to face THAT Atlantica High for the starter match," groaned a male sitting beside him. "-no duh. They have been winning the district cup for the last six years consecutively- some of the higher-ups on the school board has already announced THAT plan, you know?"

Our school was not a prestigious nor a well-known one. It's just that one of our alumnus...well, my dad actually, is an Olympic gold-medalist.

I know. That's hard to believe, yes? But sadly, it was the truth. That single fact has made the board of directors (and the shareholders) somehow, single-handedly decided to 'sell' out the name of this school. Adding the international-sized pool with problematic land contract issues doesn't help.

Needless to say, never again in 14-odd years another alumnus ever won a championship, even regional ones. The board of education, once closing one eye on the matters has now revoked the issue, stating that this school must close should we fail to get the first place in at least regional championship.

My dad was pulled as a temporary coach.
And me...well, they expected too much from me.
Even if I DID like to swim...to be nominated as 'the childhood prodigy of swimming' is too much.

...

"REI! FOCUS!" My dad yelled to me.
HUH!? WHY-

I can see Nathan swimming beneath me. He's slightly behind the others-crap! The ace of the Atlantica High has already starting his lap! Come on, come on, come on... I silently cheered for my friend down there: only I knew how much he has improved over this two months, from a kanazuchi to a same under dad's strict training-

tap.

A light touch.
It was enough.
That was the signal.

"GO REI!!!"

I dived into the water. I entered the world of fluids, not gases.
I entered the world where human body would float if there's air in their lungs, and drown if not. Simply put-not the place where a human should be.

My body feels heavy from water resistance. My muscles needed to contract more than on the ground. My hands are moving in a way they are not made for-paddling as fins.

But I moved.

I swam.

There's only two things inside the water now, aside for my own body.
Air bubbles.
And the color blue.

Nothing as much as a muffled cheers, nothing as much as spotlights.

THIS is my world.

...

*GASP!*

With a loud inhaling sound, Rei finds himself back on the lake's edge. He remembered he was swimming before, and...

A medal was in his hand. On that golden-colored piece of metal was etched:
"1st Place. Regional Swimming Meet."
Unknown for what reason, his lips' ends started curling into a smile.

...

"So...like this?"

He had buried the medal besides the acorn.
Nothing happened.

"..."
No. something happened.
The earth parted, the dirt moved...

And a small bud appeared!

"...this is working." He said, smiling gently. The wisps has already swarming him, probably telling him that he should go back to the Lake for getting another item.

Blink.
Return.
Blink. Blink.
"Order of return. Come on, #2359, The Queen will be passing her order shortly! Or did you want to be...experimented on again?"

Me?
No.

I raised my tentacle-styled appendage. It was 'given' to me because I often took too long to finish a job.

I flexed my reverse-jointed leg. It was a kangaroo's...so I can 'hop' on the task more quickly.

I fixated my multiple crystalline eyes on objects beside me. Trash. Trash. trashtrashtrashtrashtrash.

An endless mountain of trash.

Something shimmered in the distance. A glass? No. A gem? no. A mirror?
Yes.

The Queen will be pleased if I bring this home. Maybe she'll restore one of my body part back to the original...

...how did I looked like again?
I looked into the small, partly cracked hand mirror...

---

"-AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGH!!!"

Again, Rei found himself standing on the edge of the lake. In his hand was a dirty, grimy, partly-broken hand mirror.

He knows that 'memory' from before was just a false one-a fabricated one. An imagination at best...

But somewhere deep inside himself, he shivered in fear. In this world there is limitless possibilities and choices: his world before, and possibly this world are made as result of those choices.

But that also means...the world from that hallucination COULD exist somewhere, sometime else as a parallel from this one.

He again shuddered.

...

He buried the small hand mirror beside the sapling. It grows slightly, and the item was gone.

It was good that he can get rid of that nightmare remains, but...will the tree be alright?

He decided to get back to the Lake. He needed a better memory to give the Sapling...

Wooooshhh...
A tumbleweed passed by. The dust doesn't irritate my eyes anymore. Heck, I've been in this place since my birth: why would some more sand made me eyes itchy?

My hands are now in the air, right beside my trusty revolver. Got it from my dad, which obtained it from his father-

This gun has shed more blood than what circulating in my body right now. Most of them are for 'peace'-but some of them in self-defense.

And then there are suicide and murder.

This gun has traveled in many, many hands before it reaches mine. There's no maker signature nor model number anywhere. There's a blood-red stone set on its stock, but other than that none.

The guy in front of me moved slightly. A bluff.
The coin has not been tossed yet. The clockhand haven't struck 12 yet.

I'm just a simple cowboy. In this land where the climate is arid, sand is everywhere and gold lurks beneath, that one job is probably one of the hardest.

There's wild dogs, WOLF at times, locals with red skin, cattle thief, bandits---

And there's people like this.
Boasting their kills, putting big airs, challenging everyone with that attitude...
Even I can guess; he haven't killed anybody. He's just a braggart.

One more minute to midday.

My feet started to itch. Wearing leather all day causes your feet to produce all kinds of horrid smell...even mightier than carcass or rotten bile.

Thirty more seconds.

I'll just aim for his gun. Or maybe his hat? Either way, I'll will not kill him.

Five.
Four.
Three.
Two.
One-

PING!

---

"...whew."

He can't remember what's the continuation of the memory, but in his hand was the black gun with a red gem embedded on its stock, and a star-shaped medal on which the word 'Sheriff' was etched.

He removed his hand, and the gun crumbled into pieces.
He can see something...letters-no, words, etched behind the wooden grip. A name?

"Heartbreaker."

Well that's some scary name for a gun.

...

He buried the remains of once well-known gun beside the sapling. The mound instantly vanished, and once again the sapling grew. It was now as tall as his knee.

"So...west?" I asked Luo Yang. [Indeed. There's an imbalance of Chí in the land far west. My friend and priest; it was your duty as Shénzhōu Lóng to provide relief to the Earth.]

The dragon...Earth Dragon before me spoke.

We're currently in the middle of a canyon, looking for places in where the Chí needed to be stabilized.

In this world, people can summon their own Xīnlíngshòu- Spirit Animal- to aid them in their life. Some can only call forth a lesser being from their zodiac---a Lion may call out a cat, for example. Some can invite the normal ones---and some, like me...

[Do you require anything, my priest?]

-can bring Greater Zodiac Spirit like him unto this Earth.

Sigh. While I did rejoiced when my first summon called forth a complete dragon, not a snake-sized one which can only float in the air without having any power at all, entrusted with the task of mending the Chí flow is something that I didn't expect.

"Luo...give me a favor and lend your back for me this once. Pleeaaasee? It's not like you'll lose something if I sat on there for a little while, right? And maybe you can give me a little ride while we're on it---"

[What nonsense, my priest! Did you forget the proverb 'in every step you take, an experience earned'? While giving you a ride would make this journey faster, you will not able to mature in body and spirit by neglecting the simple act of walking!] protested the dragon. He's even more annoying than my mother...

Crack.

There's a slight disturbance in air. "-Yang-" [I am already doing it, my priest.] Answered the dragon, his figure floating above me.

The earth below me shook. At first it was a mere soft vibrations-but with time it escalated into a localized quake! From behind the tall rocks, several figures jumped out-

"They looks horrible." I commented, twisting my hips, raising my right fist so it was positioned beside my body, lowering my left hand so it was positioned horizontally on front of my body-

Ba Shan Fan.

The target for this fighting art was...
Beasts all around me.

I felt a little pity for them. You almost can't see WHAT animal they're converted from.

Chí. The flow of life power. The place where they flowed is considered as Earth's very vein. Disruption to these places could result in anomalies and disasters, such as the ones I'm now facing.

[Can you do this, my priest?] "Yes I do. Now, your Orb please?"

The dragon sighed, reluctantly opening his claws and dropped the large gem he has been grabbing all times (except for times like this.)

A dragon's gem is their life. It stores all of their power, and will bestow immortality to whoever swallowed it, tale of olden era said.

But can you really force this watermelon-sized object inside someone's mouth? I don't think you can.

Yet, I'm currently using this for a different purpose.
A person can summon their own Xīnlíngshòu after reaching adulthood.
But not many people know that they can borrow their Xīnlíngshòu's power.

The orb dissolved with Yang's sigh: Although it will instantly rematerialized once I'm finished, he feels...incomplete without his Orb.

And this is a secret, but...he can be killed when he didn't have it, so...just by lending this to me, he's practically giving his 'life' for me to be handled.

Enough backstory.
A pair of bracers adored with brown glistening scales materialized from my wrist down to elbow, and in my legs similar anklets also appeared.

The Dragon's Scales.
"Now let me send you back to Earth's embrace!!!"

---

"...hoh."

Rei again founds himself nodding off at the Lake's edge. In his hand was a strange, earth-colored disc-shaped object. "A...plate? No, a scale?"
It was very dense and heavy, as it were cut from a piece of bedrock.

But it was beautiful.
Somehow, he feels that he can do some fancy moves... sweatdrop
...

Rei again buried the object beside the sapling, and it again grows. Now it has reached the height of his chest.

"Just one more, and you will become a proud tree."

He again walked to the Lake. This didn't take as long as he imagined it will be...

Choice
Already did 2 and 4 + have done more than 3 so a free choice!

Ten minutes left from his shift.
Quickquickquickquickquickquick...

Five minutes left.
Comeoncomeoncomeoncomeoncomeon
One Minute.
Three.
Two.
On-

"I'M OFF!!!" I packed my things in a flash, exited my cubicle and dashed to the door.

"What the F**k happened with him?" Asked Dan, whose placed in the cubicle next to he weirdo who jumped off before. "Oh, you don't know it? He's recently played some MMORPG called...what was that again...oh, This is Halloween." Answered Cecil, appearing from nowhere.

"This is Halloween? Man, even its name suck-" "-you may say that, but once you played it once, I can guarantee you will be addicted. The depth of character customization is just InSaNe, not to mention the theme of its meta changed monthly."

"-it what!?" "Basically, one month you may play a Steampunk-based adventure, but next month it will become a D&D themed quest. Another month and it may be something like the 4th Galactic war or something. The GMs keep inventing more and more scenarios for you to play, isn't that something?"

"-now I kinda want to play---wait a minute, how did you know all of this???"
"-I happened to be a Player, too."

...

*ID: Rei*
*Password: ********* *
*Login Successful*

An avatar appeared on the screen. It was my character; a low-leveled one, really. -but it's just because I have only started this game!
My Race is Ghost, sub-division Tsukumonogami---a kind of possessive ghosts that once attached to an object, can utilize the 'nature' of said object to learn new abilities and attacks...

Most of the players here chooses 'sword' or another similar weapon for the 'possessed item'. I choose 'headphones' because I didn't know you can't change once you have decided. Oh well, at least he looks cool with that out-of-place item on his head.

Oh?

Another newbie. Her avatar's cute...but the way she put all those hearts in chat kinda annoyed me. Hmm...needing a party for a Insanity Grimoire quest? Haven't done that one yet...

'Join Party?'

A sub-window opened. It was a confirmation screen whatever I wanted to join her group or not.

CLICK.

'You joined the 'Scavenger' party!'

I kinda want to meet the leader of this group. What did he have in mind to OHH MY GOD WHAT KIND OF AVATAR WAS THAT!?

...

BUFFBUFFBUFF!!!

I smacked the keys on my keyboard using my left hand's little finger since the other four is locked in either skill shortcuts or healing potion. My right hand is clicking the mouse on the turbo.

We meet a secret boss. Our Healers was cut from three to only one due to careless 'all forward' strategy. We didn't know that this boss can sap 'Fear' (MP thingy) if a PC was close enough to it.

What he ALSO didn't know is that boss can do a AoE skill with over 5000 damage. It instantly killed our Tanks. Maybe a Horseman or Deus EX character can do better-

CLICK.
I accidentally left-clicked on the boss' sprite. A small window opened.

Huh? I don't remember having this skill before? 'Jack In'?
'Find the enemy's weakness. Casting time: 0.3s. Cooldown time: 1 minutes'
No damage output whatsoever.

Oh well. It's not like we can win this battle-

Click.

"Huh? This is---"

My fingers raced on the keyboard "ANYONE HAVE AN EARTH ENCHANTMENT???", it wrote. "What?" there's many question marks on the chat log.

"PICK THAT ITEM AND RIGHT-CLICK ON THE BOSS! IT SHOULD SEAL ITS ATTACK FOR A WHILE", I typed again, full-caps.
An animation plays. The group leader (the person with a strange avatar) seems to have one, so he used it on the monster---
It turned into a stone.

"CHARGE!" was the last text that appeared in the chat log for a few minutes later.

...

On the monitor a custom 'congratulations, you have beaten a boss' text appeared, with the damage tally and MVP award. As expected, I only did measly damage so I didn't get the Rare Loot.

The skill was almost like cheating. Basically, as long as you can do the things mentioned in the window you can do various debuff to the boss.

I have never heard of this-and there's no information for this in the Build Guide thread. Is it a secret skill or-

---

"-?"

The memory ended there. In his hand was a rather cool-looking USB.
"Heh. I kinda want to play that game, too. Would the Halloween Town have a copy of it somewhere?" Asked Rei, grinning while walking back to the sapling.
...
He buried the USB near the root of the 'sapling'...oh, he can't call it that anymore, for the 'sapling' has now grown higher than his height.

It was now a genuine tree. But it's still lacking something...
Oh?

Something was stuck on its branch. "What is this?"

"For you."

A feminine voice can be heard. It was just like the Great Silver Tree, albeit younger.

Is it..."Thanks."

At last, with your hard work, the tree has almost fully grown. It sways a bit, delicate, but with a life of its own.

"Not quite," whispers a voice, and you are obliged to return back to the lake, back to where you started. However, instead of a lake, you are faced with a strange sight.

"Err...did we took a wrong turn somewhere?" He asked to the wisps.

There is a beautiful castle in the distance, but it seems far, far in the distance. The colours are strange and still, and waters pour from multifaceted rocks in tiers and layers.

"Take some of this water, and my blessing. This is my last request. Show my children your world so they will grow each unique and different."

"My world?" Rei asked back. The voice was the Lake's...

He glanced to the small pools. From which one should he take the water from?

A dark pool with black water. A sun-dappled pool, its water glistening. An empty pool---no, it's just the water was so transparent that it appears to be empty. A cold pool that's raises his curiosity why the water haven't froze yet...

And the last was a small pool with a warm, clear water.

He decided this would be the best for that tree.

Carefully taking the water with his hand, the warmth somehow remained until he poured it on the tree's roots.

It grew.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

On its branches was not trees; instead, orbs of light---wisps, like those that has guided him throughout this task appeared, and continued to be produced endlessly from those branches.

The tree asked him: "Are you satisfied with what I have become?"
And he answered with another question. "Are you happy with what you have become?"

The tree remained silent for a minute, but finally answered: "The memories...they are interesting. And I feel...all warm and happy!."

Have I lifted this tree's--no, child's grief? Have I raised it well?

[Rei's awakened User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. for protecting and raising the Silver Tree! Along with it, a Memory returned...]

"I...remember. I have done this before."
PostPosted: Thu Aug 22, 2013 3:22 am

He remembered.
An egg protected.
A hatchling raised.
A blue bird released.

...

It was when he's just a elementary schooler. A bully was poking a bird's box off the tree, crushing the eggs. Some was thrown to people's head or the window, Some was juggled with no skill at all, some was plain stomped to pieces...

But not the last one.
He snitched it right from before the bully's nose, just as he raised his feet for a stomp. He yelled and threatened-but Rei ignored it as he ran.

Across the streets. Across the roads. Across the town. ALMOST out to the junkyard-

But he was caught. The bully punched and kicked him, yelling at him to give him the last egg so he can crush the whole family.

...

At the end of the day, the bully left without getting what he wanted. Someone called the teachers from his school, and he was apprehended for his doing.

Rei kept the egg safe and warm all those times, by curling himself into a ball. He got few bruises and some of them was so bad that he must be checked by a doctor---

In their way home, they bought a single-egg incubator, usually for classes.

A week later, a hatchling came out from that egg. It was soo ugly that he could only laugh bitterly when his mother said "Look! It must've been taking your face when you protected it as a model~" Not funny, mom.

At the first week of its life, the hatchling can only eat when someone spoon-fed it.
After its eye opened, it STILL needs to be spoon-fed for another week. His mother commented again "I'm raising a baby again!" when the plumage started to grow.

On its third week of life, it was fully-feathered nestling, ready to learn how to fly. The male Eastern Bluebird (identified after contacting local pet store) was brought by him to a nearby woods, in which it tried to hop, hop, hop...to no avail.

Rei remembered that chicks learned how to fly by imitating their mothers. And how the heck can he fly!?

On the fourth week of his life, the bluebird, still can't fly. Rei has committed should it never learn how to fly, he will keep it as long as he can.

On the fifth week...

The bluebird was gone.

He left the window open for some breeze while taking out the bird feed, and he was gone. No, his neighborhood was free of stray cats and dogs since the pound was over-enthusiastic in catching those. No, it was not on the cold, hard, asphalt below.

It was perching on a nearby power line.
As if it was bidding goodbye, it chirped loudly before taking off.

Rei did not cry, for the bird was not his pet.
He only took care of it until Mother Nature calls.

Every once and then after, at the birdfeeder placed on that very window, filled with moistened raisins...

A blue feather could be found.

Rei sniffed. It was a memory when he was still human. Still healthy.
The bird was long gone now, since its life was a short while compared to his.

But every once and then, at the very window...
A blue feather was left there.
