Well, he was in a shack. It could be worse. There were four creatures tied together, and Harland untied the camel from its post; he didn't know a lot about mounts, but he did know that they were fairly resilient creatures. Well, he thought he knew it, at any rate. Harland ran a hand through his hair, thinking he would really, really love a shower just about now.
Instead, time to climb on a camel.
Harland hoped he could be a Camel Whisperer, and tried to treat it well, occasionally saying cheerful and encouraging things to it. It didn't seem to care.
They rode off together into the plains, and they seemed... so peaceful.

The terrain was even, easy going for the camel. Harland smiled just because it was such nice weather.
His camel was really, really slow. He was pretty sure he could walk faster than that.

"I'll name ye Bruce," he told the Camel, patting its neck as if to say: It's okay you're slow as balls.
At first, the Camel was moving incredibly slowly, as per, apparently, usual. However he seemed to speed up nicely when Harland gave him a name. Bruce, yes, a good name.

Harland's got a pocket, got a pocket full of Starburst and Harland's got a camel and it is named Bruce.
That totally rhymes.
As if sensing Harland's inner monologue about his Camel, and disapproving, the Camel both tipped him off and then kicked him so hard he was left on the ground, doubled over in pain, for what felt like several years.
Needless to say, Harland was not impressed. He was enjoying the weather a lot less by the time he got back up.
"If I was the kind to act up, you'd be in some serious trouble," he told the Camel.

Harland was now calling Bruce all kinds of terrible things in the darker parts of his mind. "Would you kindly not do that to me again," he asked, which was the best he could say, and he didn't much want to ride in silence the whole way.
Bruce was one angry Camel.
He bucked Harland off, again, and kicked him.
Again. Harland's eyes were brimming over with tears, and he was fairly certain the Camel had cracked something.

"I hope ye have camel nightmares when ye sleep tonight, Bruce-- Maybe I should call ye Brucette... temperamental... no good..." Harland's voice grew darker, quieter, and more mutter-y as he stopped to bind his wounds before getting back on the stupid camel.
It was slow, it was angry, and it smelled.
Harland hates camels, it turns out.

In moody, dark silence, Harland bandaged himself back up more. His hands, steady in his rage, had begun to shake a bit; he wasn't as efficient in repairing the damage the stupid Camel had done.

As Harland traversed the even ground with his Camel, he was beginning to hope with his heart of hearts that it was not quite as mad now that he was calling it Brucette.
If it was a Lady Camel, this all made so much more sense.

He started to whistle a tune, something that had been stuck in his head, repeating over and over again.
It was probably the ambient music from the Shrine: something long since slipped out of his conscious mind, a simple strain.
It was kind of creeping him out, so he stopped.
