"I can't run."

"I suck at running."

"I hate running."


I hear it all the time. Truth is, running is like any other kind of exercise. If you're not used to doing it, you won't be able to do much of it at first. You wouldn't expect to be able to do 100 push ups a day if you've never done more than five in your life, would you?

I propose a plan. I have a goal of getting back to a point where I can run for half an hour without stopping. I used to do it when I was in the military, but then I got lazy. So now I'm on a program that combines running and walking for a set period of time four days a week. Each week increases how much you run and decreases how much you walk. Ten weeks.

As of writing this, I'm currently on week four. Week four is seven minutes of running followed by three minutes of walking. Repeat two more times. To be honest, it actually feels easier than last week.

FOR ANYONE WHO'S A BAD ENOUGH DUDE TO START RUNNING: Let's do this together. Week one is super simple. Just run for two minutes. You can run for two minutes, can't you? Do that, then walk for four minutes. Do that a total of five times, four days a week. Hell, if you want to do it for more than one week until you can run without breaking a sweat, be my guest. Let me know when you're ready for week two. LET'S GET THIS DONE!

So I vanquished week four. No big deal. Actually, I was impressed with how well I was able to control my breathing while I ran. The worst part is more that I get sweaty as all Hell. Also I should probably eat earlier in the day. BUT NO MATTER.

Week 5 = (8 minutes of running + 2 minutes of walking) x 3. That's some straight up legit math, yo.

Once again, I extend the offer/challenge to all you would be running types. Come frolic with me and we will be cardiovascular forever.

I still need to make my running track for this week. I'll have to do that tomorrow before work. FUN TIMES.

Not to challenge the "all bodys are the same when you train them" ideal

But really they are

Fast vs slow twitch dominant.

I have spent a long ammount of time (not recently though, but more than 3 months dedicated) trying to train up my cardio strength, finding that still anything much beyond 10 mins still kills me. As the same time when I train in the direction of fast twitch dominance I find I improve really fast.

In terms of running, I wouldnt mind training for sprints, but Im just not set up for distance.

Still unless someone has really tested they shouldnt use the fibre domanance as a excuse (but only as a way to provide better focus to the workout plan they are following)

I would train for sprints with you though.

For what it's worth, cardio promotes weight loss, but I'm sure you already know that.

Out of curiosity, how were you training yourself before?

Sprints are useful exercises for improving agility, but if I'm not careful they tend to make me light headed. Maybe I'm doing them wrong.

Ive done standard jogging. (Mixed in with some fartlek for fun). Some treadmill stuff/rowing machine/jogger/other machines) mainly.

Dizzyness comes from a lack of oxygen being processed, when working at your VO2 max bascally all the blood oxygen if being forced to the muscles where its needed, and wont reach the brain (Hense why over exertion can often cause fainting), if you feel nausious as well, part of this process is draining away blood from areas like the stomach to better support muscles as well.

If you train more for sprints and agility your VO2 max will increase and your body will make better use of O2 in burst situations.

My body is really good at using oxygen under quick pressure, before the lactic acid kicks in. But for me it kicks in fast, and even when I pass through the zone of the lactic system to the cardio system. My oxygen utilisation still cracks under the pressure. but this is all part of how the fast and slow twich muscles work. Like most things, the best training system will rely on your genetics, and to work the best you should train to your type.
