He might have been okay (maybe) if he hadn't awoken to too many people staring down at him. Ren still wasn't entirely certain he knew what he was doing, but at the very least, he knew his name now - Ren and the names of a few other people.
Like Jove and LW. He really hoped they were safe, wherever they were.
And, well, if anything, at least he had friends.
(So to speak. "Allies" was a better term for it.)
"So, er," said Sparrow, riding a short distance away on his own beast...thing, with one hand shading over his eyes, surveying their surroundings. Beside him was the one called Ian, though he was entirely unfamiliar to both Ren and Sparrow, and Ian had found the pair of them quite odd. Still, they had all seemed to arrive at the same time, and now they all stood around awkwardly trying to figure out what the hell to do next.
Augustus decided it was time to slap Ren on the shoulder.
"You still look half asleep, my friend," he said jovially. "Wake up! I've got some advice for y - "
Except whatever advice Augustus had been going to give him was, thankfully, saved - or maybe not so thankfully, since Ren felt something whistle past his ear and the next second all hell had broken loose.
The person beside him dropped to the ground, twitching. Ren, with a horrified look on his face, slid immediately off of his beast and ran for it, grabbing Sparrow's arm and yanking him down to the ground with him. Ian ducked beside them, looking startled.
There was someone else a short distance away.
"Hey," Ren hissed. "Hey. Hey you, over here - "

He awoke, and he was no less confused than he had been before he had chosen the pillars. Well, wait no, that was a bit of a lie. He did at least know his own name now, which was nice...though he had thought that he had known it once before, and that had turned out to be wrong. Would this be a lie as well? He hoped not. He was tired of not knowing what was real and what wa---
Wait, was he riding on some kind of animal???
Mathias didn't slide out of his saddle so much as he fell out of it, and just a moment before an arrow went whistling on by, lodging itself in some..man...of some sort. He probably would have just stayed there, gaping in the direction of the one who had been hit, had it not been for somebody hissing at him, whispering for him to join them.
No need to tell him twice!
Hopping right to it (almost literally as he scampered halfway to his feet and bolted towards the others, practically bouncing across the distance like a giant rabbit), he scrambled his way towards them, kicking up dirt and dust as he went.
He could apparently move quite quickly when frightened.
Jumping in next to the others, he hunkered down near the ground, tall ears seeming to flatten back along his head as though to hide those as well.
"Sheisse..." He hissed out, looking towards the other three. "Vut vas that?"

With a thud and a clank, the shadow Knight readies its blade. It says nothing, but it doesn't need to. Not when it is fighting with murderous intent!

Well...look at that thing. That was a big intimidating looking thing, and Mathias was not big in the slightest and was in fact quite small in comparison to that big thing.
But wait..hadn't one of his memories been about how he was quite good at fighting? Or...well, maybe he hadn't been good at it, but he certainly liked to do it. So maybe that meant he would do okay!
Following the others example (but not before taking a deep and steadying breath), Mathias jumped out from where he was hidden with the others and swung his very newly acquired weapon. "Games is good, ja? I--I think I like games."

Ren gave the boy a reassuring nod and clapped a hand on his shoulder. "Yes," he said very seriously. "Games are good."
Sparrow, on the other hand, wasn't quite used to the daggers he was holding in each hand, and he gave both Ren and the young boy a slight smile, his lips quirking upwards.
"We'll see how well this goes," he said, and lunged.

"It is very good to meet you all!" He replied, though maybe under the circumstances introductions could have waited a little while longer.
Concentrating on the matter had hand once more, he made a few quick hops around the giant, menacing foe before striking out with his sword again with another successful swipe.
This really wasn't so bad! Though he sort of wished he knew where his little friend from the world before this one had gone.....

He jabbed at the knight, which disappeared in a puff of smoke.

He wasn't so sure it was the best way to meet somebody new...but it did provide a closer sense of camaraderie and common...something or other. He really wasn't very good at thinking these things through.
When the giant knight disappeared, Mathias let out a small sigh of relief and hopped forward, inspecting the area where he had once been. Much like the strange creatures he had fought in the other world, this one left behind shiny little trinkets, and he snatched one up from the ground.
"Huzzah, yes." He agreed, though the expression was sort of lost on him, he assumed it meant something to the effect of maybe...yippee?
"Um...now what?" He looked to the winged boy for answers, his ears drooping a little, deciding that in this oddball party, Ren was the one Mathias would prefer to look up to as leader.
"Now..." said Ren, looking around like he actually had a clue what he was doing - which was a big fat lie, since he had no idea whatsoever. "Maybe we should - hey look, water."
Up ahead there was a fountain, tucked into the front hallway of a nearby building. Ren led the way towards it and peered inside, Sparrow and Augustus crowding around beside him. Sparrow ducked ahead and dipped his fingers into the pool. "It's safe," he called, and gestured for the others to follow.
Except once they had refreshed themselves, the word "safe" turned out to be a highly relative term.
"Well," said Leonardo, who was leaning over Augustus' shoulder and squinting down the hallway. "It looks like we'll have to just, er...well, run forward...well let's just do the best we can, shall we?"
Ian rolled a shoulder. "I'll go first," he said cheerfully, and dived.
Several moments later they would hear Ian yelping in pain. And then -
"OKAY OW THAT REALLY HURT."
